How many Watford pupils reached grade 4 and grade 7 in GCSE maths in summer 2026?

Watford is a town in Hertfordshire, not a local authority of its own, so DfE publishes no Watford total. The department's school-level table for GCSE (9-1) full-course Mathematics lists 101 Hertfordshire schools, and the Get Information About Schools register places five of them in the administrative district of Watford. Four are compared below. A county figure never stands in for a Watford school on this page: every number is one school's own count, with that school's cohort beside it.

Two lines matter to a family. Grade 4 is the line DfE's 16 to 19 funding rules use for maths, and grade 7 is the high-grade line a Higher tier pupil is working towards. The table counts entries at or above each line. Its share columns divide by all of the school's maths entries, with grades U and X included in the base.

The four schools together made 866 maths entries from a combined cohort of 873 pupils. Of those entries, 689 (80%) were at grade 4 or above and 353 (41%) at grade 7 or above. That pooled line is Watford's own cut of the table and not the Hertfordshire figure.

Read school by school, the picture is varied. Watford Grammar School for Boys has 210 of 224 entries (94%) at grade 4 or above and 148 (66%) at grade 7 or above. Watford Grammar School for Girls has 186 of 208 (89%) and 118 (57%), from a cohort of 211. Westfield Academy has 171 of 240 (71%) at grade 4 or above and 46 (19%) at grade 7 or above, from a cohort of 243. Future Academies Watford has 122 of 194 (63%) and 41 (21%), from a cohort of 195.

These are counts of entries, and they describe a year group of one particular summer. They do not say how any single pupil will do, and they are not a ranking: a school with a larger share at grade 7 is not thereby a better place to learn. What the table does give a family is a plain statement of where the cohort around their child finished, which is the context a one-to-one tutor works against.

Westfield Academy has 8 entries at X, the DfE grade for pupils who were absent or whose results are pending, and Watford Grammar School for Boys has 1. The shares above count those entries in the base. Leaving X out of Westfield's base gives 171 of 232 entries, 74% at grade 4 or above, against 71% on all 240 entries. The difference is the whole effect of the X entries on that school's figure.

Where do the entries sit between grade 4 and grade 7, and which tier reaches each line?

A share at grade 4 and a share at grade 7 leave out the pupils between them. The grade-by-grade counts show where each school's entries sit.

Westfield Academy1416284761172020638
Future Academies Watford11183130331821137120

At Westfield Academy the two largest single grades are 5, with 61 entries, and 4, with 47. Together grades 4 and 5 hold 108 of 240 entries, 45% of the school's maths entries, and grade 6 drops to 17. Only 63 of the school's entries are on grade 6 or above. At Future Academies Watford the middle is flatter: 31 entries on grade 3, 30 on grade 4 and 33 on grade 5, 94 entries in the three grades together out of 194.

The two Watford Grammar schools show the opposite shape. At the Boys' school, grades 8 and 9 have 53 entries each, 106 of 224 entries, 47% of the total. At the Girls' school, grade 8 has 52 entries and grade 9 has 42, 94 of 208, 45% of the total. The pupils who finish between grades 4 and 6 number 62 at the Boys' school and 68 at the Girls' school, against 125 at Westfield Academy and 81 at Future Academies Watford.

Those band counts matter because the two lines are reached by different routes. AQA's GCSE Mathematics 8300 specification sets a Foundation tier of grades 1 to 5 and a Higher tier of grades 4 to 9, and a pupil must take all three papers at the same tier. A pupil entered for Foundation cannot score above grade 5, so the grade 7 line exists only for pupils entered at Higher. Grade 4 and grade 5 can be reached from either tier. DfE's table has no tier column, so no Watford count here can be split into Foundation and Higher entries, and nothing on this page assumes a school's tier split.

The weighting of the papers differs between tiers as well. AQA's specification gives Assessment Objective 1, the recall and procedure strand, 50% of the Foundation marks and 40% of the Higher marks, and gives Assessment Objectives 2 and 3, reasoning and problem solving, 25% each on Foundation and 30% each on Higher. Added together, reasoning and problem solving carry 50% of the Foundation marks and 60% of the Higher marks. For a pupil whose results sit between grades 4 and 6, a tutor reading a mock paper looks first at which of those strands is losing the marks.

Whichever side of grade 4 your child is on, our expert GCSE maths tutors build a one-to-one online plan from their own paper, opening the grade 7 route only where the Higher tier is the right entry.

How many Watford pupils finished on grade 3 or below, and what must a 16-year-old then do?

For a family whose child is below grade 4, the decision that follows is set by DfE's 16 to 19 funding guidance. It applies to young people in post-16 study programmes who do not hold GCSE maths at grade 4 or above, and its update note, dated 24 July 2026, clarifies the rule at grade 3: students with a GCSE grade 3 must study towards a GCSE, while students with a grade 2 or below may study towards either a GCSE or Functional Skills level 2.

The counts are DfE's, shown beside each cohort. Westfield Academy has 28 entries at grade 3 and 30 at grades 1 and 2, from a cohort of 243. Future Academies Watford has 31 at grade 3 and 29 at grades 1 and 2, from a cohort of 195, with 12 entries at U. Watford Grammar School for Girls has 16 at grade 3 and 5 at grades 1 and 2, from a cohort of 211, and Watford Grammar School for Boys has 7 and 4, from a cohort of 224. Across the four schools that is 82 entries at grade 3 and 68 at grades 1 and 2, with 18 at U and 9 at X.

A grade 3 at 16 means continuing maths study in post-16 education, so a Year 11 pupil forecast at 3 has a reason to find the marks in Year 11 itself. A tutor in that position works through past papers for the marks that sit just below the grade 4 boundary, separating those lost to method errors from those lost to gaps in knowledge. Our guide to the GCSE maths resit in Year 12 and our comparison of Functional Skills Level 2 against the GCSE resit cover the route if the grade does not arrive in Year 11.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Which Watford schools does DfE list, and how should the provisional figures be read?

DfE's GCSE (9-1) full-course table for Mathematics lists 101 Hertfordshire schools. Five have the administrative district Watford in the Get Information About Schools register: Watford Grammar School for Boys, Watford Grammar School for Girls, Westfield Academy, Future Academies Watford and Stanborough Secondary School. Four are compared on this page. DfE lists Stanborough Secondary School with 16 entries, and this page makes no comparison with it. The other 96 schools in the Hertfordshire table are in other districts of the county.

Several things about the table affect how a Watford family should read it.

The figures are provisional. DfE published the 2025/26 release on 15 October 2026 and its release page says the data in the release is provisional. The school and college checking exercises ran in June 2026 and Autumn 2026, and approved result amendments that schools may have requested have not been applied. A count can change in the final release, so no figure here should be read to the last pupil.

U and X are DfE's own grades. DfE's footnote reads: "Grade U refers to pupils' results which are ungraded or unclassified." The next footnote reads: "Grade X refers to pupils who were absent or whose results are pending." Both are entries in the table and both are in the base of every share above.

Small totals are withheld. DfE's footnote says individual grade breakdowns are suppressed where the total number of entries is 5 or fewer. Each of the four schools compared has more than 5 entries, so none has a withheld breakdown.

Cohort and entries are different counts. DfE's indicator "Number of pupils at the end of KS4" is the cohort. "Number of entries at grade" is the count of exam entries. Westfield Academy has a cohort of 243 and 240 maths entries, Watford Grammar School for Girls 211 and 208, and the two counts need not be equal for any school.

A school missing from this table may enter its pupils for a different qualification, and nothing on this page characterises such a school.

Two schools with a Watford postal town are in Three Rivers: how do their counts compare?

Parmiter's School (WD25 0UU) and Saint Michael's Catholic High School (WD25 0SS) both have Watford as their postal town in the register, but the register places both in the district of Three Rivers. They are therefore outside the Watford cut above, and they are shown separately here because both carry the Watford postal town.

School (Three Rivers district, Watford postal town)Cohort (pupils at end of KS4)Maths entriesGrade 4 or aboveGrade 7 or aboveEntries at grade 3Entries at grades 1 and 2
Parmiter's School206203180 (89%)114 (56%)1111
Saint Michael's Catholic High School180178123 (69%)28 (16%)2516

Parmiter's School has 203 entries from a cohort of 206, with 180 at grade 4 or above and 114 at grade 7 or above. Saint Michael's Catholic High School has 178 entries from a cohort of 180, with 123 at grade 4 or above and 28 at grade 7 or above. Together the two schools made 381 maths entries. They are not added to the four-school Watford figures, and nothing in the Watford totals above includes them.

What does one-to-one online GCSE maths tuition involve for a Watford pupil?

Every programme starts from the pupil's own paper. GCSE maths is three written papers: Paper 1 is non-calculator, Papers 2 and 3 allow a calculator, and AQA's specification gives each paper 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks, a third of the assessment each, for 240 marks in total. A pupil sitting all three at the same tier spends 4 hours 30 minutes in the exam room, and the way the marks are lost differs by paper: Paper 1 tests arithmetic that Papers 2 and 3 let a calculator carry.

Our expert GCSE maths tutors teach one-to-one online with a shared whiteboard. A programme begins with a short diagnostic against the pupil's own school and exam board, then works through that pupil's past papers and marks them against the real mark scheme. Progress is reviewed against the pupil's own target grade at agreed intervals, and session notes go to parents after each lesson.

The Watford counts above do two jobs in that programme. They set the reference for the target: a pupil at Westfield Academy sits in a year group where 125 entries finished on grades 4 to 6, and a pupil at Watford Grammar School for Girls sits in one where 118 entries reached grade 7 or above, and a target of grade 7 means something different in each. They also guide the tier conversation, because the grade 7 line only exists on Higher tier and the Foundation ceiling of grade 5 is a decision a tutor raises with the family and the school early, using the pupil's mock paper and not an average.

Our tutors work with the pupil's exam board, whichever it is, and our subject pages set out the specifications: AQA GCSE Maths, Higher tier AQA GCSE Maths and Foundation tier AQA GCSE Maths. For the wider range of what we teach in the town, the Watford tuition hub lists it, and the GCSE tuition overview covers every subject.

91% of our students achieve their desired grades. The figure is first-party and describes all of our students, not only those in Watford, and no tutor result for any Watford school is claimed here. For the official specification and the paper structure, see AQA's GCSE Mathematics 8300 specification at a glance. The DfE figures come from DfE's Key stage 4 performance release for 2025/26.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Watford Grammar School for Boys pupils reached grade 7 in GCSE maths in summer 2026?

DfE's provisional table records 148 of the school's 224 GCSE maths entries at grade 7 or above, which is 66%, from a cohort of 224 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4. Grades 8 and 9 account for 106 of those 148, with 53 entries at each. One entry is at X, which DfE defines as absent or results pending, so the 66% uses all 224 entries as its base.

Which Watford schools are in DfE's GCSE maths table?

DfE's GCSE (9-1) full-course table for Mathematics lists 101 Hertfordshire schools. The Get Information About Schools register places five of them in the Watford district: Watford Grammar School for Boys, Watford Grammar School for Girls, Westfield Academy, Future Academies Watford and Stanborough Secondary School. This page compares the first four. DfE lists Stanborough Secondary School with 16 entries, and the page does not compare it.

Are the Watford GCSE maths figures final?

No. DfE published the figures on 15 October 2026 and labels the release provisional: approved result amendments that schools requested have not been applied. The school and college checking exercises ran in June 2026 and Autumn 2026. A count at grade 4 or grade 7 can therefore still change, and every Watford figure on this page is a provisional summer 2026 count from dataset version 2.0.

What do U and X mean in the Watford table?

DfE's footnotes say grade U refers to pupils' results which are ungraded or unclassified, and grade X refers to pupils who were absent or whose results are pending. Across the four Watford schools compared, U accounts for 18 entries and X for 9 out of 866 entries. Westfield Academy has 8 of the 9 X entries, so its grade 4 share is 71% of all 240 entries and 74% of the 232 entries that are not X.

Can a Foundation tier pupil reach grade 7 in GCSE maths?

No. AQA's GCSE Mathematics 8300 specification sets a Foundation tier of grades 1 to 5 and a Higher tier of grades 4 to 9, and a pupil takes all three papers at the same tier. Grade 7 is therefore reachable only through the Higher tier. DfE's table has no tier column, so the Watford counts above cannot be split into Foundation and Higher entries.

What must a Watford pupil do after a grade 3 in GCSE maths?

DfE's 16 to 19 funding guidance, last updated on 24 July 2026, says students with a GCSE grade 3 must study towards a GCSE, while students with grade 2 or below may study towards either a GCSE or Functional Skills level 2. In summer 2026 DfE counts 82 entries at grade 3 and 68 at grades 1 and 2 across the four Watford schools compared, from a combined cohort of 873.

Are Parmiter's School and Saint Michael's Catholic High School in Watford?

Both have a Watford postal town, WD25 0UU and WD25 0SS, but the Get Information About Schools register places them in the Three Rivers district, so this page keeps them in a separate table. Parmiter's School has 203 GCSE maths entries, with 114 at grade 7 or above. Saint Michael's Catholic High School has 178 entries, with 28 at grade 7 or above.

How does a Watford pupil start one-to-one online GCSE maths tuition?

A family books a free consultation through the button on this page or by WhatsApp. The first step is a short diagnostic against the pupil's own school and exam board. Sessions then run one-to-one online with a shared whiteboard, working through the pupil's own past papers and marking against the real mark scheme, with session notes shared with parents after each lesson.
