Who sits A-level Physics at the eight sixth forms inside SW19 and SW20, what DfE's 2024/25 figures can and cannot show, and what each school says a Physics student must also take.
Book a Free ConsultationA-level Physics in Wimbledon is taken at eight sixth forms inside SW19 and SW20, which recorded 167 exam entries in 2024/25 with RR6 counted once. Of those entries, 51 came from girls, and 32 of the 51 came from cohorts that were entirely female, so the area's share of girls describes no single co-educational sixth form. DfE's value-added score clears zero at three of the seven sixth forms with a published row.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppDfE publishes, for each school and college, how many A level students it had in 2024/25 and what percentage of them were entered for each maths and science subject, split by sex (A level maths and science data set). For the eight Wimbledon sixth forms the Physics rows give 167 entries, 51 from girls and 116 from boys, so girls are 30.5% of the total. Each entry count is the percentage multiplied by the student count, and it matches the exam-entry count on Compare school and college performance at every provider.
That 30.5% blends three kinds of cohort. Wimbledon High School GDST, Ricards Lodge High School and Ursuline High School Wimbledon have no boys among their A level students, and between them they account for 32 of the 51 girls. Wimbledon College and Rutlish School have no girls, and account for 48 of the 116 boys. Only the four providers that teach both sexes, King's College School, Raynes Park High School, Harris Academy Wimbledon and Hall School Wimbledon, can show anything about how girls and boys choose Physics inside one sixth form, and among their 87 entries girls account for 19, or 21.8%.
A share assembled from cohorts like these reads 100% at an all-girls school and 0% at an all-boys school by construction, which is why it describes the area and not any one sixth form. The comparison that does not depend on who a school admits is the proportion of each sex's A level students who enter Physics, set out below.
| Sixth form | A level students (girls / boys) | Girls entered for Physics (entries) | Boys entered for Physics (entries) | Physics entries |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| King's College School | 55 / 128 | 29.1% (16) | 43.8% (56) | 72 |
| Wimbledon College | 0 / 124 | no girls | 20.2% (25) | 25 |
| Rutlish School | 0 / 139 | no girls | 16.5% (23) | 23 |
| Wimbledon High School GDST | 89 / 0 | 16.9% (15) | no boys | 15 |
| Ricards Lodge High School | 116 / 0 | 9.5% (11) | no boys | 11 |
| Raynes Park High School | 29 / 30 | 10.3% (3) | 16.7% (5) | 8 |
| Harris Academy Wimbledon | 17 / 47 | 0% (0) | 12.8% (6) | 6 |
| Ursuline High School Wimbledon | 113 / 0 | 5.3% (6) | no boys | 6 |
Source: Department for Education, Schools and colleges - A level maths and science, 2024/25 (percentage of A level students entered, and total number of A level students, by sex); entries are the percentage multiplied by the student count, rounded, and equal Compare school and college performance's A-level Physics exam entries at each provider. Hall School Wimbledon (five A level students, one Physics entry) is counted in the totals and not listed.
For scale, summing every institution row in the same dataset gives 5.9% of 163,852 female students and 22.2% of 137,847 male students entered for Physics in 2024/25. That is our own sum of 8,376 per-institution rows, using each percentage as published to one decimal place, and it comes to 40,239 Physics entrants against the 39,727 A level Physics entries in DfE's England comparator, a 1.3% difference we could not trace to a cause. Treat the national rates as approximate. Set against them, the girls at King's College School (29.1%) enter Physics at about 5.0 times the national rate for girls, those at Wimbledon High School GDST (16.9%) at about 2.9 times and those at Ursuline High School Wimbledon (5.3%) at about 0.9 times. Boys at King's College School (43.8%) enter at about 2.0 times the national rate for boys, and the boys of the other four providers at between 0.6 and 0.9 times.
Harris Academy Wimbledon's row records 17 girls among its 64 A level students and none of them entered for Physics; its six entries are from boys. That is what the dataset records for one year's cohort. The groups are small throughout: at Raynes Park High School one more girl entering Physics would move its girls' rate by 3.4 points, and at Ursuline High School Wimbledon by 0.9. DfE notes that not every institution records sex for every student, so a total may differ from the sum of its female and male counts; at every provider in this file the totals do equal that sum.
RR6 is not listed in the table because its row repeats Ricards Lodge High School and Rutlish School: 116 girls and 139 boys, with 11 and 23 entries. The next section gives the working.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppDfE's value-added file for Merton holds twelve A-level Physics rows for 2024/25. Ten are published and two, Hall School Wimbledon and St Mark's Church of England Academy, are suppressed. The ten published rows sum to 209 matched entries, but that total counts some students twice: RR6's row of 33 matched entries equals Rutlish School's 23 plus Ricards Lodge High School's 10. Counting RR6 once gives 176 for the borough. Harris Academy Merton's 13 entries are at a Mitcham address and fall outside this page's boundary, which leaves 163 matched entries across seven sixth forms: King's College School 70, RR6 33, Wimbledon College 25, Wimbledon High School GDST 15, Raynes Park High School 8, Ursuline High School Wimbledon 6 and Harris Academy Wimbledon 6.
Matched entries are the ones DfE can link to a student's GCSE results, so they run slightly below the exam entries that Compare school and college performance counts. Compare gives 167 A-level Physics entries for the same eight sixth forms. The extra four are 2 at King's College School, 1 at RR6 and 1 at Hall School Wimbledon, whose value-added row is suppressed. The two figures measure different things, and this page labels each.
What the Get Information about Schools register shows about RR6 is short. It records RR6 (URN 136509) as a sixth form centre for ages 16 to 19, open since 1 September 2010, with two links: Rutlish School and Ricards Lodge High School, each typed "Sixth Form Centre School" and dated 22 March 2011. On the two schools' own register entries, RR6 appears as a "Sixth Form Centre Link" with the same date. None of the other nine establishments in the Merton file links to RR6.
The published figures then close to the unit on four separate measures.
| Measure | RR6 | Rutlish School | Ricards Lodge High School | Rutlish plus Ricards Lodge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matched entries (value-added file) | 33 | 23 | 10 | 33 |
| Exam entries (Compare) | 34 | 23 | 11 | 34 |
| Entries graded A* to E (subject entries and grades file) | 31 | 21 | 10 | 31 |
| A level students (maths and science file) | 255 | 139 | 116 | 255 |
Source: Department for Education, qualification and subject value added; subject entries and grades; A level maths and science (all 2024/25); Compare school and college performance, subjects entered at 16 to 18. A-level Physics throughout.
Because each measure closes exactly, no member of RR6's row is a suppressed row that has dropped out of the arithmetic: a suppressed member would leave a shortfall. The relationship is arithmetic between published rows.
The value-added scores follow the same arithmetic. DfE's technical guidance defines a school or college's subject score as the average of its students' individual scores, so weighting Rutlish's -0.43 and Ricards Lodge's -0.96 by their 23 and 10 matched entries gives -0.5906, which rounds to the -0.59 DfE publishes for RR6. That is a check on a published score. It does not turn other combinations of rows into scores DfE has not published.
A value-added score is only a finding where its 95% confidence interval lies wholly on one side of zero. On that test three of the seven sixth forms with a published Physics row qualify: Harris Academy Wimbledon above zero on six matched entries, and RR6 and Raynes Park High School below it. Ricards Lodge High School's own below-zero row describes 10 of the 33 matched entries already inside RR6's, so it does not make a fourth. All of these are DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality.
| Sixth form | Matched entries | Value added | 95% interval | Clears zero? | Graded A* to B (exam entries) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| King's College School | 70 | 0.05 | -0.23 to 0.32 | No | 68 of 72 (94.4%) |
| RR6 | 33 | -0.59 | -0.99 to -0.18 | Yes, below | 14 of 34 (41.2%) |
| Wimbledon College | 25 | 0.39 | -0.07 to 0.86 | No | 19 of 25 (76.0%) |
| Rutlish School (counted within RR6's 33) | 23 | -0.43 | -0.91 to 0.06 | No | 11 of 23 (47.8%) |
| Wimbledon High School GDST | 15 | 0.13 | -0.47 to 0.73 | No | 12 of 15 (80.0%) |
| Ricards Lodge High School (counted within RR6's 33) | 10 | -0.96 | -1.69 to -0.23 | Yes, below | 3 of 11 (27.3%) |
| Raynes Park High School | 8 | -1.33 | -2.15 to -0.51 | Yes, below | 1 of 8 (12.5%) |
| Ursuline High School Wimbledon | 6 | -0.25 | -1.2 to 0.69 | No | 3 of 6 (50.0%) |
| Harris Academy Wimbledon | 6 | 1.37 | 0.42 to 2.31 | Yes, above | 5 of 6 (83.3%) |

Source: Department for Education, qualification and subject value added, A level cohort, Physics, 2024/25 (c means suppressed); grades from Schools and colleges - subject entries and grades, 2024/25. The England comparator for the same grades is 21,491 of 39,727 A-level Physics entries (54.1%).
Raw grades and value added answer different questions. King's College School's 72 exam entries produced 68 grades of A* to B (94.4%), against 54.1% for DfE's England comparator (21,491 of 39,727 entries), yet its value-added score is 0.05 with an interval of -0.23 to 0.32, which spans zero. Value added compares each student with others nationally who had the same GCSE results, so a high raw share and a score near zero can sit together. Harris Academy Wimbledon's five grades of A* to B from six entries and Raynes Park High School's one from eight rest on very small groups, and their intervals are 1.89 and 1.64 wide against King's 0.55.
Hall School Wimbledon shows c, DfE's symbol for a suppressed figure, in all four value-added columns, and Compare lists one A-level Physics entry for it. A single entry cannot support a score.

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.
I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.
Two Wimbledon sixth forms put A-level Maths beside Physics in the Physics entry of their own documents. Harris Academy Wimbledon's subject prospectus for 2026 entry says: "in order to study Physics students must also study A Level Maths". Raynes Park High School's booklet for September 2026 says that students who take A Level Physics "should also take A level Mathematics", because "there is a lot of overlap between the two subjects". In the RR6, Ursuline High School Wimbledon, Wimbledon College and Wimbledon High School GDST documents we read, we found no sentence requiring or advising it, though RR6 lists Mathematics among the subjects that combine well with Physics.

Source: each school's own published document, named in the last column. We found no Physics board or entry rule for King's College School, and read no Physics document for Hall School Wimbledon.
The documents are for 2026 and 2027 entry, so they describe what a student joining now is asked, not what the 2024/25 students in the tables above were asked, and each school issues a new one every year. Harris Academy Wimbledon's prospectus is not uniform on the point: its Mathematics page says students "may also find Mathematics A Level helpful while studying Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Economics and Biology A Levels", while its Physics page says must. A student choosing Physics there should ask which applies.
Ursuline High School Wimbledon and Wimbledon College publish one course guide, for September 2026, that lists A-level Physics twice: "Taught at Ursuline Sixth Form" with the board OCR, and "Taught at Wimbledon College" with the board Pearson Edexcel. Wimbledon College's 2027-28 entry requirements say that for a course at Ursuline "you must meet the higher of the two entry criteria between the schools". For Physics the Maths element is Grade 6 at Ursuline and Grade 5 at Wimbledon College, so the higher is 6. DfE attributes all of a student's results to a single school, so which of the two rows a student taught at Wimbledon College appears in is not something the value-added file shows. Our A-level Biology tutors in Wimbledon page describes the same arrangement for Biology.
No. DfE's value-added file holds a single Physics row for King's College School, for its A-level entries: 70 matched entries from 72 exam entries. Compare also lists 16 IB Higher Level and 8 IB Standard Level Physics components for the school, which no A-level row describes. King's says that the 400 or so pupils in its co-educational sixth form can choose either the International Baccalaureate Diploma or A levels, and its subject list places Physics on both routes. DfE's count of King's A level students is 183, 55 girls and 128 boys, so the percentages in the first table are percentages of that A-level group only.
Wimbledon is a town inside the London Borough of Merton (local authority 315), and DfE publishes results by local authority, so the Merton file has to be cut down. The rule used here is the postcode on the Get Information about Schools register: SW19 or SW20. Ten of the twelve Merton Physics rows qualify. King's College School is SW19 4TT, RR6 and Ricards Lodge High School SW19 7HB, Wimbledon College SW19 4NS, Wimbledon High School GDST SW19 4AB, Harris Academy Wimbledon SW19 2JY, Rutlish School SW20 9AD, Raynes Park High School SW20 0JL, Ursuline High School Wimbledon SW20 8HA and Hall School Wimbledon SW20 8HF. SW20 takes in Raynes Park and Merton Park, so the rule includes schools whose own addresses use those names.
Harris Academy Merton (Wide Way, CR4 1BP) and St Mark's Church of England Academy (Acacia Road, CR4 1SF) are in Mitcham and are left out on address alone. On the register the ten in-scope providers carry the Wimbledon parliamentary constituency and the two Mitcham schools Mitcham and Morden, so on this file the postcode and the constituency field agree. We also checked the 95 Physics rows for providers in six neighbouring local authorities (Wandsworth, Kingston upon Thames, Richmond upon Thames, Sutton, Croydon and Lambeth) against the register, and none has an SW19 or SW20 address.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppOur expert A-level Physics tutors help students across Wimbledon start from three things this page has pinned down: the sixth form the student is actually in, the board that school names for Physics, and the maths the course asks of them. The three boards in the documents we read set different papers. OCR, named by Harris Academy Wimbledon, Wimbledon High School GDST and Ursuline Sixth Form, uses Modelling Physics and Exploring Physics at 37% each (2 hours 15 minutes) and Unified Physics at 26% (1 hour 30 minutes). AQA, named by RR6 and Raynes Park High School, uses three papers of 2 hours, which Raynes Park weights at 34%, 34% and 32%. Pearson Edexcel, named at Wimbledon College, sets two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes at 30% each and a 2 hour 30 minute paper on general and practical principles at 40%.
Where the documents state the timing, the written papers all come at the end of Year 13. RR6 says its three examinations are sat at the end of year 13, Raynes Park High School describes linear examinations at the end of Year 13, and Ursuline's OCR course says its three written assessments are taken at the end of Y13. For those papers a Year 12 student has school tests and mocks to measure progress against, not an external paper, until the summer of Year 13, so each programme builds mock-paper checkpoints and treats the calculation work the course leans on as a first-year priority rather than a second-year repair.
The practical endorsement is reported separately from the grade. OCR's course, as Harris Academy Wimbledon describes it, treats the endorsement as non-exam assessment reported separately, and RR6 describes 12 investigations and a lab book with a pass or fail result. Our A-level Physics tuition page covers how we teach towards it. Students combining Physics with Maths or Chemistry can see how the same sixth forms compare on our A-level Maths tutors in Wimbledon and A-level Chemistry tutors in Wimbledon pages, and the Wimbledon tuition hub lists the rest of what we offer locally.
Compare school and college performance lists 167 A-level Physics exam entries for 2024/25 across eight sixth forms in SW19 and SW20, counting RR6 once: King's College School 72, RR6 34, Wimbledon College 25, Wimbledon High School GDST 15, Raynes Park High School 8, Ursuline High School Wimbledon 6, Harris Academy Wimbledon 6 and Hall School Wimbledon 1. DfE's value-added file matches 163 of those entries to students' GCSE results. Rutlish School's 23 and Ricards Lodge High School's 11 entries are already inside RR6's 34.
Yes. DfE's maths and science file implies 51 girls among the 167 entries, or 30.5%. That share blends cohorts: Wimbledon High School GDST, Ricards Lodge High School and Ursuline High School Wimbledon record only girls and hold 32 of the 51, while Wimbledon College and Rutlish School record only boys. At the four providers that record both sexes, girls make up 19 of 87 entries (21.8%). The share of girls entering Physics runs from 29.1% at King's College School to 5.3% at Ursuline High School Wimbledon, and none of Harris Academy Wimbledon's 17 girls is recorded as entered.
Two say so in their own documents. Harris Academy Wimbledon's 2026 prospectus says students must also study A Level Maths to study Physics, and asks for a 7 in GCSE Maths. Raynes Park High School's September 2026 booklet says students who take A Level Physics should also take A level Mathematics, and asks for Level 6 or equivalent in Maths and English. We found no such sentence in the RR6, Ursuline High School Wimbledon, Wimbledon College or Wimbledon High School GDST documents we read, which publish GCSE Maths grades of 6, 6 and 5 for the first three and grades 8 or 9 in each subject for Wimbledon High. Check the current year's document.
RR6 and Raynes Park High School name AQA, and Raynes Park gives the specification as 7408. Harris Academy Wimbledon names OCR with the specification H556, and Wimbledon High School GDST names OCR. Wimbledon College names Pearson Edexcel. Ursuline High School Wimbledon's course guide lists OCR where Physics is taught at Ursuline Sixth Form and Pearson Edexcel where it is taught at Wimbledon College. We found no board for King's College School on the pages we read and read no Physics document for Hall School Wimbledon, so ask those departments directly.
No. RR6's 33 matched Physics entries are Rutlish School's 23 plus Ricards Lodge High School's 10, so adding all three rows gives 66 and counts the same 33 twice. The same holds for Compare's exam entries (34 = 23 + 11), the graded entries (31 = 21 + 10) and the A level student counts (255 = 139 + 116). The Get Information about Schools register links RR6 only to those two schools. Counting RR6 once, Merton's published Physics rows total 176 matched entries and the SW19 and SW20 sixth forms 163.
No. DfE's value-added row for King's College School covers A-level entries only: 70 matched entries from 72 exam entries, with a score of 0.05 and an interval of -0.23 to 0.32. Compare separately lists 16 IB Higher Level and 8 IB Standard Level Physics components for the school, and King's says its co-educational sixth form of about 400 pupils chooses between the International Baccalaureate Diploma and A levels. The file holds no value-added row for those IB entries.
