Brunel Medical School is the medical school of Brunel University of London that admits Home and international fee-status students to one five-year Medicine MBBS (A100) through separate tracks. For September 2027 entry, school leavers on both tracks need AAA at A level; Home applicants applied through UCAS by 15 October 2026 and are shortlisted on UCAT or GAMSAT, while international applicants can apply by 30 June 2027 (the direct route may close earlier) without a UCAT or GAMSAT score.

Home or international: which Brunel track are you on?

Almost every later step at Brunel depends on fee status. Home applicants apply through UCAS and are invited to interview on their UCAT or GAMSAT score "owing to the limited number of UK-funded places". An international fee-paying student "can also apply directly to Brunel", and the 2026-27 admissions policy states that "International applicants are ranked separately from home students".

Fee status is a formal assessment, not a box the applicant ticks. Brunel's policy says "Assessments are made based on immigration and residency criteria as set by the UK Government" and warns that "it is possible for applicants who do not require a visa to study in the UK to be classed as ‘overseas’ for the purposes of fees". Brunel assesses fee status only "once an application has been submitted", and the policy points applicants to UKCISA for more information, so anyone unsure should check UKCISA's fee-status guidance before applying.

Brunel Medical School "welcomed its first intake in September 2022 of self-funded international students", and in October 2023 the university announced that it would be "offering 50 places to UK ‘home’ students from September 2024". The 53 Home and 107 international places in the table come from the 2026-27 policy; the split for September 2027 entry may differ. Entry routes at other schools are set out in our guide to UK medical schools.

What grades does Brunel Medical School ask for 2027 entry?

Brunel's 2027/8 requirements sit on the Medicine MBBS course page. Its admissions team first checks "(a) your references, and (b) whether you meet, or are predicted to meet, the general and minimum academic requirements to progress to the next stage". Meeting those requirements is a threshold rather than a shortlist: "meeting the general and academic criteria does not guarantee an interview invitation, due to the competitive nature of the course".

Three rules catch applicants out. Degrees, or A levels where no degree has been taken, must have been "awarded within the 5 years prior to application"; an older qualification "may be acceptable if the applicant has been working in a relevant field since". Brunel's 2026-27 policy lists "Previous enrolment on a medicine course in UK or abroad, whether completed or not" among the factors that normally exclude an applicant, together with transfer from another undergraduate science or medicine programme that has not been completed. The same 2026-27 policy says "Applications for deferred entry are not normally considered", so an applicant planning a gap year would normally apply during it. On work experience, Brunel "takes reference from the Medical School Council’s guidance on work experience".

How does Brunel shortlist Home applicants on UCAT or GAMSAT?

For a Home applicant the interview invitation turns on the test. Brunel's 2026-27 policy says "Applicants are ranked according to their total UCAT or GAMSAT score" and "The highest ranked applicants are invited to register for a vMMI". The course page adds: "While there's no set UCAT cut-off score, selection for interview is competitive and based on overall performance in the test relative to other applicants in the same year of entry."

One section works as a hard filter: "Please note, we do not accept applicants with SJT Band 4." A high total cannot carry a Band 4 Situational Judgement result, so the SJT deserves the same preparation as the scored subtests.

The score must also be current. Brunel says "You must sit UCAT in the year that you apply", and the UCAT Consortium states that "You are required to sit the UCAT 2026 if you are applying for entry in 2027"; its university list shows Brunel University of London as institution B84, course A100. Brunel describes the UCAT as "a two-hour test taken at a Pearson Vue test centre", made up of "four separate sub-tests, each varying in length".

Brunel accepts GAMSAT only from degree holders, and "GAMSAT scores are valid for two years prior to entry", whereas a UCAT score must come from the year of application. Our GAMSAT guide covers the test in detail.

Competition is heavy: the 2026-27 policy notes that "like other UK medical schools, BMS receives more than 2000 applications each year for its MBBS programme", set against the 53 Home and 107 international places it lists for that cycle. Home applicants can read how our UCAT tutors structure preparation.

Contextual offers and the 2026-27 policy's 5% UCAT uplift

The MBBS sits outside Brunel's general contextual scheme: it "has a standalone Contextual Admissions policy". In the 2026-27 version, that policy "applies to applicants eligible for home fees" and includes "lower graded A-level offers to contextual applicants and applying a 5% UCAT uplift to those that meet one of the criteria below". The criteria are:

One criterion is enough, and because Home applicants are ranked on total UCAT score, the uplift moves an eligible applicant up the same list that decides interviews. The policy asks applicants to "disclose this information in their UCAS application", and says "UCAS referees should also include this information in their reference". After interview, applicants who meet the Widening Access Criteria "and who are successful post vMMI, may be given a lower contextualised offer".

Because the 2026-27 policy applies its contextual approach to Home-fee applicants, international applicants are not covered by the uplift. Our guide to contextual admissions explains how these flags work.

What happens in Brunel's recorded vMMI?

Brunel holds all interviews online as "asynchronous virtual Multiple Mini Interviews (vMMIs), which are usually scheduled between December and July" (the first international week for 2027 entry is 17–22 November 2026), with "different rounds for Home and International students". Once invited, "you'll have five days to complete your interview online".

Each of the six stations shows a question on screen and reads it aloud: "You'll then have 30 seconds to think about your response and up to five minutes to answer." The interview takes "around 40 minutes" in all, stations can be completed at different times, and the deadline is midnight on the final day. Responses are reviewed later by assessors "including academic staff and NHS clinicians". The invitation email includes a link to a practice area, and "Nothing that you record in the practice area is reviewed or assessed".

Each station is "designed to assess a different attribute aligned with Good Medical Practice". The blueprint in the 2026-27 admissions policy names a data interpretation station, a resilience and adaptability station, a teamwork station, a perspective-taking station, an ethical reasoning station and a commitment to healthcare station; treat it as a guide to the kinds of station, not a confirmed 2027 rota.

Scoring is a straight total: "Candidates are ranked according to the total score obtained at vMMI (with no pre-determined requirement to pass a minimum number of vMMI stations)", and a cut-off is agreed "based on the current cohort performance". Applicants who reach it "may be offered a place or, with your permission, added to the waiting list, according to the number of available places". Our MMI interview coaching helps applicants practise answering aloud within a fixed time.

Applying to Brunel on international fee status

International applicants work to a longer calendar: "Please apply either through UCAS or directly to Brunel by 30 June 2027. Please note, the direct application deadline may close earlier, subject to course vacancies, so we recommend you apply early." No admissions test is required: "For International Applicants: Your application does not require UCAT / GAMSAT admissions test score." Our page on medical schools without the UCAT sets this route beside other test-free options.

The 2026-27 policy says English is "assessed once an offer has been made"; the course page sets IELTS at "7.0 overall (min 7.0 in all areas)" and lists other accepted qualifications. The 2026-27 policy states that "For international fee-paying students, a deposit of £10,000 is required". Applicants residing overseas also need a Criminal Clearance Certificate alongside the enhanced DBS record. Looking further ahead, Brunel notes that "Entry onto the Foundation Programme requires an applicant to have the right to work in the UK and places on the programme are not guaranteed for every UK graduate." Applicants abroad can see our medicine interview support for international students.

Tuition fees and funding on each track

For September 2027 entry the course page lists tuition fees of £10,050 a year for Home students and £49,395 a year for international students, under its "2027/28 entry" heading. It notes: "The Government has confirmed that this will be £9,790 for 2026/27 and £10,050 for 2027/28 (subject to Parliamentary approval)." On international fees it says "International fees will increase annually, by no more than 5% or RPI (Retail Price Index), whichever is greater."

Home applicants who already hold a degree are funded differently. Under "Graduate funding for the MBBS (home students only)", Brunel says they cannot take a tuition fee loan from Student Finance England "for the first four years of the programme, but you can apply for a Maintenance Loan". It continues: "From year five onwards, tuition fees will be paid by the NHS Student Bursary Scheme", with "a non-means-tested grant of £1,000 as part of their NHS Bursary award". Our overview of graduate-entry medicine compares degree-holder routes.

What does studying at a newer medical school involve?

Brunel Medical School describes its regulatory position on its own website: "As a new Medical School, Brunel Medical School is subject to scrutiny through stages of the GMC’s rigorous quality assurance process. We have completed key stages of this process to date, and we will continue to be closely reviewed by the GMC until the programme has been successfully delivered and the final-stage approval for the award of the MBBS degrees is granted."

Teaching is built around team-based learning: "Brunel Medical School uses TBL as the main method of classroom teaching", with students "Working in teams of six". Communication and clinical skills are taught in "a suite of 18 video-equipped consultation rooms" with trained simulated patients. Patient contact starts through "regular placements in general practice (family medicine) clinics" from Year 1. Years 3 and 4 bring hospital and primary care placements "across Greater London and South-East England", with teaching back on campus "every 6 weeks", and Brunel's clinical partners include The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals. Each student joins one of Brunel Medical School's 5 Houses "for the duration of the course", with a House Tutor, and the curriculum is designed to prepare students for the UK Medical Licensing Assessment.

How our tutors prepare applicants for Brunel

Our tutors plan around the stage that decides each applicant's outcome. For Home applicants that is the UCAT score, with the SJT kept clear of Band 4 from the first week of preparation. For every applicant it is the recorded vMMI, so our interview tutors rehearse timed answers to scenario stations in the applicant's own words. For the reference, the 2026-27 policy says a referee "must not be a family member or close family friend" and should have known the applicant "for a period of at least 6 months"; our medicine admissions support covers the personal statement that sits beside it.

Brunel Medical School entry requirements: questions applicants ask

Does Brunel Medical School accept UK students?

Yes. Brunel Medical School took its first intake in September 2022 with self-funded international students, and in October 2023 announced 50 places for UK Home students from September 2024. For September 2027 entry, Home applicants had to apply through UCAS by 15 October 2026 (that deadline has passed) with a UCAT score, or a GAMSAT score if they held a degree. Brunel's 2026-27 admissions policy lists 53 Home places and 107 international places.

What UCAT score do I need for Brunel?

Brunel's course page says "there's no set UCAT cut-off score" and that selection for interview is "based on overall performance in the test relative to other applicants in the same year of entry". Home applicants are invited to interview based on their UCAT or GAMSAT score. Brunel also states: "we do not accept applicants with SJT Band 4". Contextual applicants in the 2026-27 policy receive a 5% UCAT uplift.

Do international applicants need the UCAT for Brunel?

No. Brunel's course page says: "For International Applicants: Your application does not require UCAT / GAMSAT admissions test score." International applicants for September 2027 entry can apply through UCAS or directly to Brunel by 30 June 2027, although the direct route may close earlier if places fill, and need English at IELTS 7.0 overall with 7.0 in every area, or an accepted equivalent. Under the 2026-27 policy they are ranked separately from Home applicants and pay a £10,000 deposit.

When are Brunel's interviews for 2027 entry?

Brunel lists provisional vMMI weeks by fee status. Home fee-paying applicants are expected to interview in 16–21 February 2027 or 9–14 March 2027. International fee-paying applicants have six possible weeks, from 17–22 November 2026 to 6–11 July 2027. Once invited, an applicant has five days to record all six stations, which take around 40 minutes in total, and Brunel says the dates may change.

Does Brunel accept BTECs or deferred entry?

Brunel's 2027/8 key information lists BTEC as not accepted, and the A-level requirement is AAA including Chemistry or Biology and a second science. Brunel's 2026-27 admissions policy says applications for deferred entry are not normally considered, and requests to defer an offer are not normally considered either. Degrees, or A levels where there is no degree, must have been awarded within the 5 years before application; an older qualification may be acceptable if the applicant has worked in a relevant field since.

Is Brunel Medical School GMC approved?

Brunel states its position on its Medical School page: "As a new Medical School, Brunel Medical School is subject to scrutiny through stages of the GMC’s rigorous quality assurance process." It adds that it will "continue to be closely reviewed by the GMC until the programme has been successfully delivered and the final-stage approval for the award of the MBBS degrees is granted". The first intake joined in September 2022.
