A100 and A110 entry for September 2027, from Edge Hill's 2027 course pages, its October 2023 admissions-policy supplement and its 2026-cycle interview briefing.
Book a Free ConsultationEdge Hill University Medical School is the medical school of Edge Hill University in Ormskirk, and it recruits to two courses for September 2027: Medicine MBChB (A100, five years) at AAA including Biology and Chemistry, and Medicine with Foundation Year (A110, six years) at BBB for North West applicants who meet widening-participation criteria. Both require the UCAT, and Edge Hill's 2027 course pages say any candidate in Situational Judgement Test band 4 “will be automatically rejected”.
Applied to Edge Hill Medicine for 2027 entry?
The 2027-entry UCAS deadline was 15 October 2026, so the stage left to prepare for is the interview. Our expert medicine interview tutors help Edge Hill applicants practise timed Multiple Mini Interview stations of the kind described in Edge Hill's October 2023 supplement and 2026-cycle briefing, and our UCAT tutors help applicants sitting the UCAT in 2027 for 2028 entry.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppEdge Hill checks eligibility before it compares UCAT scores. Its 2027 A100 course page describes Stage 1 as screening against the standard academic criteria, and applications which do not meet “the minimum eligibility and academic criteria will not be progressed to the next stage”. The rules below screen applicants out before any score is looked at.
Applications go through UCAS. The UCAT Consortium's table of member universities lists Edge Hill University as E42, with course codes A100 and A110. The October 2023 supplement names a 15 October UCAS deadline and adds that applications made after it “will not normally be considered”. For 2027 entry the deadline fell on 15 October 2026, the date in the UCAT Consortium's 2026 key dates. This page is part of our directory of UK medical school entry requirements. Edge Hill's live course pages now show both courses as closed to applications for September 2027 entry.
Medicine MBChB (UCAS code A100) is a five-year course starting in September 2027. Its standard offer is AAA, and the 2027 page states that the grades “must include Biology and Chemistry and one other subject”. Both sciences are needed at grade A or above, but “where Grade A* is achieved in either Biology or Chemistry (or both Biology and Chemistry), the third A Level subject will be accepted at Grade B or above”. That is why Edge Hill gives A*A*B and A*AB as example offers. General Studies, Critical Reasoning, Citizenship and Key Skills are not accepted.
At GCSE the page asks for “at least five GCSEs at Grade B or Grade 6 or above (or equivalent) at the time of application, including Biology, Chemistry, English Language and Mathematics”. Double Science at 6-6 or B-B is accepted in place of separate Biology and Chemistry. Because the wording is “at the time of application”, the GCSE grades have to be in hand when the UCAS application goes in.
The equivalents below are the ones the 2027 A100 page lists.
| Qualification | Edge Hill A100 requirement, September 2027 entry |
|---|---|
| A levels | AAA including Biology and Chemistry and one other subject; or A*A*B or A*AB with Biology and Chemistry at grade A or above and the third subject at grade B or above |
| GCSEs | At least five at grade 6/B at the time of application, including Biology, Chemistry, English Language and Mathematics; Double Science at 6-6 or B-B accepted |
| International Baccalaureate | Diploma with 36 points or more: three Higher Level subjects with at least 6 in Biology, 6 in Chemistry and one other subject, plus three Standard Level subjects at 5 or more each |
| Irish Leaving Certificate | Three Higher Level subjects at H1, including Biology, Chemistry and one other, and three at H2, including English Language and Mathematics |
| Scottish Highers | AAAAB or above, including Biology, Chemistry and three other subjects |
| Advanced Highers | AAA in Biology, Chemistry and one other subject |
| Cambridge Pre-U | D3D3D3 in Biology, Chemistry and one other subject |
| Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) | Accepted on specific terms, set out in the section on degree holders and Access students below |
| BTEC Extended Diploma | Not accepted for this course |
For English language, the 2027 pages say that applicants who have studied overseas and who do not have GCSE English Language at B/6 or above “or recognised equivalent” must gain IELTS at the required level, given as “IELTS of 7.5 overall (with no elements below 7.0)”. The IELTS result need not be in hand at application, but it must be listed as pending and “achieved prior to interview”. Edge Hill adds that IELTS “cannot replace GCSE English Language at Grade B or Grade 6 or above for applicants who have studied GCSEs”.
Preparing for Edge Hill Medicine?
Our expert medicine admissions tutors help 2027-entry Edge Hill applicants prepare for the interview stage, and help applicants sitting the UCAT in 2027 for 2028 entry prepare for the test, with each programme built around Edge Hill's own selection stages.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppMedicine with Foundation Year (UCAS code A110) is a six-year programme: a Foundation Year, then the five-year MBChB. Edge Hill's 2027 A110 page describes it as “aimed at students from the North West of England who have the potential and aspiration to become doctors” but “whose background may mean it is less likely that they will be able to meet the academic requirements for direct entry”. The Foundation Year “does not normally lead to an award or qualification in its own right”; passing it at the required pass mark opens progression onto the MBChB.
Eligibility is a three-part test; all three parts must be met. Quoted text is from Edge Hill's 2027 A110 page.
| Part | What the 2027 A110 page requires |
|---|---|
| 1. Residence | “Have lived in the North West of England (Lancashire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Cumbria) for at least one year immediately prior to the point of application.” |
| 2. School or area (one of two) | “Have attended a non-selective state secondary school for GCSEs where the Attainment 8 score is below the English average”, judged on the latest relevant Department for Education performance tables; or “Have attended a non-selective state secondary school for GCSEs and either live in an area with a postcode in quintile 1 or 2 in the POLAR4 young participation index or in a neighbourhood with a high level of multiple deprivation with an Index of Multiple Deprivation decile of 4 or below.” |
| 3. One further criterion | “Live in a low-income household with a combined income below £35,000”; parents who did not go to university or who do not have a higher education qualification; being, or having been, in local authority care; being a carer aged 25 and under (“Be aged 25 and under and care for a friend or family member who, due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction, cannot cope without your support”); refugee status; membership of the travelling community; Care Experienced and Estranged Students (CEES); a POLAR4 quintile 1 or 2 postcode; or an Index of Multiple Deprivation decile of 4 or below. Applicants who used the area option in part 2 “may not tick these same criteria as their additional item”. |
Applicants give details of how they meet each criterion “and will be expected to provide evidence of this at a future date, prior to the offer of a place being made”. GCSEs taken at an institution with no Attainment 8 data are “considered on an individual basis”. See also our guide to contextual admissions and lower offers.
A110 asks for BBB including Biology and Chemistry, both at grade B or above; where Biology or Chemistry is at grade A or A*, the third subject is accepted at grade C, which gives the ABC offer. Edge Hill also accepts BB in Biology and Chemistry with a D in a single BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma or National Award, and the IB at 32 points with Chemistry and Biology at Higher Level and every subject passed at 5 or more. GCSEs are as for A100: five at grade 6/B.
The A110 page says Edge Hill will not accept Foundation Year applications from degree holders, while “Applications from mature students are welcomed”. Foundation Year students can “typically expect to attend sessions for 2.5 to 3 full days a week”.
Applicants to A100 and A110 must sit the UCAT before applying, and the 2027 A100 page says UCAT scores “can only be used to support an application if they were achieved in the relevant admissions cycle prior to your intended year of entry”. For 2027 entry that was the UCAT 2026, run from 13 July to 24 September 2026 according to the UCAT Consortium's test dates.
After the academic screen, the 2027 course pages describe a ranking: “Applicants who meet the minimum academic criteria will be ranked according to their UCAT scores. A UCAT threshold will be set depending on the number of interviews to be held.” In Edge Hill's words the threshold “may differ from year to year as it is dependent on the scores achieved by those who apply to us in each admissions cycle”. The October 2023 policy supplement adds that it also depends on “the number of places available on each Programme”, and that “The threshold is based on the total UCAT score.”
The Situational Judgement Test works as a separate floor. The 2027 course pages state: “Any candidate scoring within band 4 in the Situational Judgement Test will be automatically rejected.” The UCAT Consortium's 2026 test statistics, based on 42,359 tests taken up to 24 September 2026, placed 11% of all candidates in band 4. That is a national figure for all candidates, not an Edge Hill statistic.
The 2027 course pages add: “The UCAT threshold will be extended for candidates who meet specific widening participation criteria or have successfully completed the Widening Access to Medicine Programme at Edge Hill University.” Applicants who may qualify should ask Edge Hill which criteria count.
The October 2023 supplement says: “Personal statements and academic references are not routinely used in selection for interview.”
The table below gives national figures for the UCAT 2026, the test 2027-entry applicants sat; they are not Edge Hill thresholds.
| UCAT 2026, all candidates (UCAT Consortium national figures, not Edge Hill data) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Tests taken, data valid to 24 September 2026 | 42,359 |
| Total score scale: three cognitive subtests scored 300 to 900 each | 900 to 2,700 |
| Mean total cognitive score | 1918 |
| 5th decile total score (50th percentile) | 1920 |
| 9th decile total score (90th percentile) | 2250 |
| Situational Judgement bands 1, 2, 3 and 4 | 15%, 40%, 34% and 11% |
The UCAT Consortium's universities page says the UCAT 2026 is the test for entry in 2027; on the same pattern, applicants for September 2028 entry sit the UCAT 2027. Its booking page says: “Instructions on how to register and book for the UCAT 2027 will be published in March 2027.” Edge Hill's supplement adds that re-applicants “will need to sit the UCAT test again, unless this is in the same admissions cycle”.
Sitting the UCAT in 2027 for 2028 entry?
Our expert UCAT tutors help applicants sitting the UCAT in 2027 prepare all four subtests, giving Situational Judgement its own time alongside the cognitive sections, because Edge Hill's 2027 course pages reject SJT band 4 automatically and rank academically eligible applicants on their UCAT scores.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppThe 2027 course pages list Stage 3, the interview, and Stage 4, scoring, as “Details TBC”. For the 2026 entry cycle Edge Hill published an interview briefing covering both A100 and A110 candidates, with a reasonable-adjustments deadline of Saturday 13 December 2025. The table describes that 2026 cycle. It is not a confirmed format for 2027 entry.
| Element | Edge Hill interview briefing, 2026 entry cycle |
|---|---|
| Setting | In person, based at the Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre on the Edge Hill campus, near Ormskirk |
| Time to allow | Approximately 2.5 hours |
| Stations | “a total of 5-8 interview stations (including 1 rest station), with each station typically being 7 minutes in duration” |
| Reading time | 2 minutes before each station to read and consider the scenario |
| Changeover | A 1-minute gap, so each station took 10 minutes in total; the starting station was selected at random |
| Scoring | Standardised criteria at each station; interviewers “will not be aware of scores from the other stations”; candidates ranked on performance across all stations |
| Before the day | Read the briefing, familiarise yourself with the NHS core values, and complete the online Non-Disclosure Agreement |
| On the day | Original A level and GCSE certificates with photocopies, and original photographic ID |
| Decisions | Interviews ran “until the end of January”, with no decision until all interviews were “reviewed and ranked” |
The 2026-cycle briefing listed what interviewers would assess, saying the process “will include many of these”: motivation for wanting to study medicine with specific reference to Edge Hill University; communication skills; integrity and probity; teamwork and leadership; empathy and compassion; awareness of current health challenges; ethical awareness; awareness of self and others; prioritisation and decision making; and interpretation of data. The October 2023 policy supplement gives a near-identical list of skills and attributes, which it says are “mapped onto The NHS Constitution Values and the Vision and Values of Edge Hill University”.
Two rules in the 2026-cycle briefing were strict. Candidates could not proceed with the interview without the completed Non-Disclosure Agreement, and “anyone found to have revealed interview questions to others, including through social media, will have any offer of a place withdrawn, or lead to your exclusion after the Programme has commenced”. Our guide to preparing for a medical school MMI covers station technique in general.
How scores become offers comes from the October 2023 supplement: “A score will be given for performance at each MMI station, and individual scores combined. Applicants will be ranked according to their overall MMI score and offers made to the top-ranking students.” The supplement states that “No offers will be made without an interview”, that Edge Hill does “not offer specific feedback relating to individual candidate performance at interview”, and that scores from individual MMI stations “will not be released”.
My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.
We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.
I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.
Degree holders can apply to A100 but not to A110. The 2027 A100 page considers applicants with “a 2:1 or above who have studied a science related programme, including Psychology, which has been awarded in the two years prior to application”, and says those who finished a degree earlier but have undertaken postgraduate study in the past two years are “also encouraged to apply”. The October 2023 policy supplement words the rule differently: a degree “awarded within two and a half years of application”, or postgraduate study “within two years of application”. The two documents give different recency limits, so an applicant near either limit should ask Edge Hill's medicine admissions team which one it applies.
Degree-holding applicants also need A levels: ABB including Biology and Chemistry, at least one of them at grade A and the other at grade B or above, plus one other subject, and the standard GCSE requirement. The 2027 page states that “There is no graduate entry point onto the MBChB”, so a degree holder takes the full programme; the supplement calls it “the full five-year Programme”. Students in the early stages of a non-medical degree who wish to withdraw will be considered if they meet the standard MBChB criteria, but “No recognition of prior learning (RPL) will be considered on this basis”.
The Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) is accepted for A100 on precise terms: 60 credits overall, with distinction in 45 Level 3 credits, at least 15 Level 3 credits in Chemistry and at least 15 in Biology, the remainder in one other subject, on a course that complies with the QAA's subject descriptor for Medicine. Edge Hill adds conditions on timing. The Access course must not have been started “less than 3 years since completing A-level or degree study”, the diploma must have been obtained within the two years prior to application, and “Access courses taken in place of resitting A-levels are not recommended”. The standard GCSE requirement still applies.
Invited to an Edge Hill interview for 2027 entry?
Our expert medicine interview tutors help Edge Hill candidates rehearse timed MMI circuits on the station lengths and attributes in Edge Hill's 2026-cycle briefing, from motivation for Edge Hill specifically to interpreting data, with feedback on every answer.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppAn Edge Hill offer is conditional on more than grades. The 2027 course pages say an applicant who accepts a formal offer must submit a Declaration of Health, may be contacted by, or asked to attend, the University's nominated Occupational Health Service provider, and must apply for an Enhanced DBS Disclosure showing ‘Clearance to Work with Children and/or Vulnerable Adults’. Edge Hill may also verify health and character against the Medical Schools Council Excluded Students Database. The 2026-cycle interview briefing put the conditions as academic qualifications where not yet met, health screening, fitness to practise clearance and an enhanced DBS check.
The October 2023 supplement is direct about deferral: “Deferred entry will not be offered to applicants.” Anyone who wishes to defer “will be advised to undertake a full re-application for the subsequent year”, and a re-application includes being interviewed again if the applicant reaches stage 3 of selection.
The same supplement says unsuccessful applicants are welcome to re-apply the following year if they meet all the criteria at that point, and that they must sit the UCAT again. Resits are accepted: “We accept applications from those who have re-sat GCSEs or A levels (or equivalent) either with or without mitigation.” Mitigating circumstances are not accepted “in lieu of appropriate entry requirements”, so resit grades still have to meet the offer.
Appeals are narrow. Edge Hill's Undergraduate Medical School Admissions Appeals Procedure, dated 24 October 2023, says appeals “must normally be submitted within 20-working days of the communication of the outcome to the applicant”. The October 2023 supplement limits the grounds to evidence that procedure was not followed, new evidence with valid reasons why it was not available earlier, or evidence of bias or prejudice. The same supplement says reserve lists may be used and that the programmes “may open in UCAS Extra or Clearing to recruit additional students if places become available”.
The 2027 A100 page lists a UK full-time tuition fee of £9,790 for 2026/27 and £10,050 for 2027/28. Edge Hill says each figure is “subject to Parliamentary approval” and “likely to be increased in line with inflation (RPIX)”. UK students can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan to cover the full tuition fee, subject to eligibility. Placements are in the North West of England, and the page says students are responsible for travel and parking costs while on placement.
Edge Hill's own news stories chart the growth in places. On 20 May 2024 Edge Hill reported 30 UK undergraduate medical places, rising to 50 for the 2024/5 academic year and to 63 for 2025/6, after 13 extra places it called “the highest number awarded in the North West”. A story dated 1 August 2025 repeated the expansion “from 30 undergraduate places to 63 in the upcoming academic year”.
The Medical School's first cohort finished in 2025. “July 2025 saw the graduation of our first cohort of Medicine students”, according to the A100 page, and on 23 April 2025 Edge Hill announced that the General Medical Council had formally approved its Medical School and that Edge Hill was “now officially inducted to the register of institutions with powers to award UK primary medical qualifications”. On 1 August 2025 Edge Hill reported that 80 per cent of that first cohort came from backgrounds often under-represented in medicine, and that all of them secured jobs as doctors, with half choosing to work in the North West.
Teaching in the first two years uses “a hybrid model of case-based learning and team-based learning” within a spiral curriculum, and the course is aligned with sixteen themes rather than modules. Year 5 is described as “an apprentice year” that prepares students for the national Medical Licensing Assessment and for practice.
The October 2023 supplement says personal statements are not routinely used in selection for interview, so our Edge Hill preparation goes into the two scored stages: the UCAT ranking and the interview, which that supplement describes as Multiple Mini Interviews.
UCAT scores for 2027 entry were fixed when the UCAT 2026 closed on 24 September 2026, so our work with 2027 applicants is interview preparation. Our expert medicine interview tutors run timed mock circuits using the 2-minute reading time and 7-minute stations described in Edge Hill's 2026-cycle briefing, and they build practice around the ten attributes it listed. Two of those reward specific preparation: motivation “with specific reference to Edge Hill University”, which calls for knowing the course's case-based teaching and North West placements, and interpretation of data, which is a skill rather than a topic. Because Edge Hill's 2026-cycle briefing withdrew offers from anyone who revealed its interview questions, preparation rests on the attributes and on practice scenarios, never on recalled questions. See our MMI interview coaching and our medical school interview preparation, or book a free consultation to plan an Edge Hill interview programme.
For applicants sitting the UCAT in 2027 for 2028 entry, the selection described on Edge Hill's 2027 course pages would make the UCAT ranking the step that decides which academically eligible applicants are invited to interview. The UCAT Consortium's format page, read on 17 October 2026, gives four subtests: Verbal Reasoning (44 questions in 22 minutes), Decision Making (35 in 37 minutes), Quantitative Reasoning (36 in 26 minutes) and Situational Judgement (69 in 26 minutes). Because the October 2023 supplement bases the threshold on the total score, no cognitive subtest can be neglected, and because the 2027 course pages reject SJT band 4 automatically, the SJT gets its own preparation. Our UCAT tutors work through all four, and the medicine preparation hub covers the rest of a medicine application.
91% of our students achieve their desired grades, and Leading Tuition is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026.
Yes. Edge Hill's 2027 A100 page asks for AAA at A level, and the grades must include Biology and Chemistry and one other subject. Both sciences are needed at grade A or above; where an A* is achieved in Biology or Chemistry, the third subject is accepted at grade B, giving example offers of A*A*B or A*AB. The A110 Foundation Year route also requires Biology and Chemistry, at BBB or ABC. General Studies, Critical Reasoning, Citizenship and Key Skills are not accepted as A levels on either course.
Edge Hill's admissions-policy supplement, from October 2023 and linked from the 2027 course pages, says: 'Deferred entry will not be offered to applicants.' An applicant who wants a gap year is advised to make a full re-application for the following year, and that re-application includes being interviewed again if the applicant reaches stage 3 of selection. The supplement also says re-applicants will need to sit the UCAT test again, unless this is in the same admissions cycle.
For the 2026 entry cycle, Edge Hill's interview briefing invited candidates to an in-person interview at the Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre on its campus near Ormskirk, with 5-8 Multiple Mini Interview stations including one rest station, each typically 7 minutes. That briefing asked candidates to allow approximately 2.5 hours and to complete an online Non-Disclosure Agreement first. The 2027 course pages list the interview stage as 'Details TBC', so the 2026-cycle arrangements are not a confirmed format for 2027 entry.
Edge Hill describes a threshold set each cycle. Its 2027 course pages say applicants who meet the academic criteria are ranked according to their UCAT scores, that 'A UCAT threshold will be set depending on the number of interviews to be held', and that it may differ from year to year. The October 2023 policy supplement says the threshold is based on the total UCAT score. Any candidate in SJT band 4 is automatically rejected. For national context only, the UCAT Consortium reports a 2026 mean total score of 1918 across 42,359 tests.
Edge Hill's October 2023 admissions-policy supplement states: 'Applicants who are considered international students for fees purposes are currently not eligible to apply.' It adds that applicants assessed as international for fee purposes are told Edge Hill is 'not currently able to take international applicants' on either medicine programme. The 2027 A110 page says international students are not eligible, while EU/EEA and Swiss students with settled or pre-settled status, and Irish nationals, are eligible to apply. The 2027 A100 page says those groups may be eligible for the UK tuition fee rate.
Yes, to the five-year A100 course but not to the A110 Foundation Year. Edge Hill's 2027 A100 page asks for a 2:1 or above in a science-related programme, including Psychology, awarded in the two years prior to application, plus ABB at A level including Biology and Chemistry, one of them at grade A. Its October 2023 policy supplement words the recency rule as within two and a half years of application. The 2027 page states that there is no graduate entry point onto the MBChB, so degree holders take the full programme.
Edge Hill's October 2023 admissions-policy supplement says: 'Personal statements and academic references are not routinely used in selection for interview.' On the 2027 course pages, interview invitations follow the academic screen and the UCAT ranking. After the Multiple Mini Interviews, the same supplement says the personal statement and reference may be used to distinguish between applicants whose scores tie at the threshold, and that offers are made subject to satisfactory references. The 2027 course pages list Stage 4, scoring, as 'Details TBC'.
For the 2026 entry cycle, Edge Hill's interview briefing said interviews ran until the end of January and that candidates would not receive a decision until all interviews were completed, reviewed and ranked. The October 2023 policy supplement says top-ranking students are made offers soon after the interviews, that reserve lists may be used, and that the programmes may open in UCAS Extra or Clearing if places become available. For 2027 entry, the UCAT Consortium's 2026 key dates give early November for UCAT results reaching universities.
