To sit its 120-minute ESAT you need not answer a single chemistry question: Chemistry is 1 of 4 optional modules, and a candidate who chose Physics and Mathematics 2 has had no chemistry examined by Cambridge at all.
That gap is what the December interview inherits, and it is the reason this page exists.

The course page sets the entry requirement: “To apply to any of our Colleges for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, you will need A levels/IB Higher Levels (or the equivalent) in: Mathematics, Chemistry, a third science/mathematics subject (Biology, Physics or Further Mathematics).” Chemistry is not negotiable there.
The admissions test page sets the test: applicants for this course “will complete Mathematics 1 and two additional multiple-choice modules” drawn from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2, “making the test 120 minutes in total”. Chemistry appears in that list as one option among four.
Both statements are Cambridge’s, and neither is a mistake. The ESAT is a shared instrument across four courses, and prescribing chemistry for one of them would break that. But the consequence for an individual applicant is concrete. Depending on which two modules you took, the University’s formal assessment of your chemistry before December is either one 40-minute multiple-choice module, or nothing at all — with your predicted grade and your personal statement carrying the rest.
This is not an argument that the test is soft. It is an argument about what is left to do. Whatever the interview turns out to ask, it is the first occasion on which anyone at Cambridge watches you reason about chemistry rather than reading a grade for it.
The module rules differ across the four ESAT courses in a way that is easy to miss.

Engineering is the outlier: its candidates sat an identical paper set and are therefore directly comparable on it, which is the subject of our page on preparing for the Cambridge Engineering interview after the ESAT. Your course is not like that. Two Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology applicants with the same overall score may have been tested on entirely different science, and Cambridge publishes no preferred pairing and no guidance on which two to take.
What it does publish is what its entrants had studied at school. All had taken Chemistry and Mathematics; 86% had also taken Physics and 78% Further Mathematics. Those are cohort descriptions, not requirements, but they indicate the ground an interviewer is likely to assume is common.
Cambridge is precise about the instrument: “The ESAT is a computer-based assessment. It is made up of individual multiple-choice modules lasting 40 minutes each.” It is equally precise about the marking: “Your final scores are based on the number of correct answers you give. You do not lose marks for wrong answers, so it’s worth attempting all questions.” And it states that there is “no pass or fail for ESAT”.
A score under those rules is a count of correct selections. It cannot separate a candidate who reasoned to an answer from one who eliminated three options, and it records nothing about a problem set up correctly and then dropped. For most subjects that is a tolerable simplification. For chemical engineering it removes rather a lot.
The discipline is largely about what happens when several things change together: a rate that depends on temperature and concentration at once, a yield traded against a separation cost, an equilibrium shifted by pressure in a vessel that also has to be built and paid for. A multiple-choice item can ask which way an equilibrium moves. It struggles to ask what you would do about it, what you would measure first, or which of two imperfect process routes you would defend and why. Those are interview questions, and after a 120-minute multiple-choice paper they are the questions still outstanding.
It is also worth saying plainly what a weak module does not mean. Cambridge publishes no threshold score for any course, and states that everyone who receives an offer will have been interviewed: “Not everyone interviewed will be offered a place, but everyone who is made an offer will have been interviewed.” Nothing is settled in October.
Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry packs — £180 each
There is no Chemical Engineering pack among the thirty, and we will not pretend otherwise. What exists either side of your subject are the Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry packs, which cover the reasoning a chemistry interviewer tests, and the three Engineering packs, which cover estimation and applied physical reasoning. Each holds ten interview questions with the full worked reasoning attached. Both chemistry packs are covered by the free chemistry sample; the cart discounts a two-pack basket by 10% and three or more by 20%, applied automatically at checkout.
Inorganic Chemistry pack — £180 Organic Chemistry pack — £180Cambridge sends most interview invitations in November, with some in early December, and adds that “The timing of your interview does not reflect your perceived strength as a candidate”. The main interview period for 2027 entry is 7 to 18 December 2026. Counting from the last day of the ESAT sitting, that is 52 days; from the first day of the sitting, 56.
The invitation, not the University’s general guidance, is what should shape the last three weeks of your preparation. Cambridge says it will tell you when and where the interview is, what you will need on the day, whether you will be given any pre-interview reading or tasks to work through, and how to attend. Each of those changes what practice is useful. Pre-interview material means practising reading something unfamiliar under time pressure and then discussing it; a whiteboard means practising with a stylus before December rather than during it.
Format is set per College rather than per course. Cambridge publishes a College-by-College table for 2027 entry in which some Colleges run everything online, some everything in person, and several allow UK-based applicants to choose. A handful name individual courses as in-person exceptions, and Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology is not among the courses named by any of them — so your College’s default applies. The course is taught at every College except Corpus Christi.
One rule is absolute. Cambridge asks candidates to keep the whole interview period free, says it cannot reschedule except in exceptional circumstances such as illness or religious observance, and states that a candidate who does not attend “will not be considered for a place”. If something in that fortnight cannot move, the College should hear about it now.
Cambridge’s interview page contains one sentence that should reorganise your preparation: “You may be asked to share your workings if the interviewers ask you a problem-solving question. This usually happens if you’ve applied to a science or mathematics course.” In October the working was invisible and only the selected option scored. In December the working is the thing being marked.
The University lists what it is assessing in an interview: your understanding of the subject area, your readiness to study at a high academic level, whether you will thrive in the Cambridge learning environment, your ability to think critically and independently, your curiosity and openness to new ideas, and your enthusiasm for the subject. It also says you are likely to be asked to “apply your knowledge to new situations, materials, problems or scenarios”.
Its own advice to maths and science applicants is to “practise problem solving” and to “think about how you might show or explain the way you worked out a problem”. In practice, that means changing what a practice session looks like. Take a reaction you understand and talk through the whole approach before calculating anything: what is being asked, what you know, what you are assuming about temperature, purity or ideality, and which route you are choosing over which alternative. Then have someone add a constraint — the feedstock is impure, the vessel cannot hold that pressure, the catalyst costs more than the product — and keep talking while you rework it.

In the 2025 cycle, counting all applications regardless of domicile, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology drew 541 applications, produced 92 offers and recorded 77 acceptances — a success rate of 14.2%. The University’s own course page describes the same cycle as 7 applications per place with 77 accepted.
The 15-place difference between 92 offers and 77 acceptances is not a second round of selection. Cambridge offers are conditional, and the gap reflects candidates who missed their conditions or took another place.
The entry standard for 2027 entry is A*A*A at A level, or 41 to 42 IB points with 776 at Higher Level. Colleges vary above that: Cambridge lists a group that usually sets offers at the minimum level, and another group — Churchill, Emmanuel, Girton, Homerton, Lucy Cavendish, Magdalene, Pembroke, Peterhouse, Queens’, Selwyn, St John’s and Trinity Hall — that specifies which subjects an A* must fall in. Of that second group Cambridge says: “Generally, this is one or two from Chemistry, Mathematics, or Further Mathematics.” Among recent A level entrants, 80% had achieved at least A*A*A*.
One figure is missing and worth naming as missing: Cambridge does not publish how many applicants to any course are interviewed. Its 2025-cycle statistics report applications, offers and acceptances only, and its interviews page says merely that “We invite many applicants to interview”. Any precise interview rate quoted for this course did not come from Cambridge.
