After the ESAT: Preparing for Your Cambridge Natural Sciences (Physical) Interview

Cambridge says this interview will be on subjects you have already studied. That is a statement about the ground, not about the difficulty.

Cambridge’s Natural Sciences page says one thing about this stream that it says about no other: it is best to apply for Physical Sciences if you have studied Physics and Maths A levels, because your interview will be on subjects that you have already studied. With the ESAT sat between 12 and 16 October 2026 and interviews running from 7 December to 18 December 2026, that sentence is the most useful thing a Physical candidate has to work with.

It rules out a whole category of worry and replaces it with a harder one. Among Physical entrants who had studied A levels and started at Cambridge in 2018, 2019 and 2023, every one took Mathematics, 97% took Physics and 92% took Further Mathematics — so if the interview is on ground you have already covered, it is ground almost everyone else has covered too.

Written practice across two sciences, not one

There is no Natural Sciences pack, and the Physical stream sits across chemistry and physics. The closest sets are Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Dynamics and Fields, each ten questions written by specialist subject tutors with a worked answer for every one, £180 each. Samples go by subject: the two chemistry sets are covered by the free chemistry sample, Dynamics and Fields by the free physics sample.

What “subjects you have already studied” rules out, and what it leaves

Read literally, Cambridge’s sentence removes the fear most candidates arrive with: that the interview will reach for something they have never met and judge them on the blank. For the Physical stream it says the opposite is expected — the material is yours already.

What it does not say is that the questions will be easy, and the design of the rest of the process makes clear why. The ESAT is built, in its publisher’s words, to separate highly capable applicants including those who have achieved top grades in school exams, and it warns candidates not to expect to score as highly on it as they have in their school exams. Scores run from 1.0 to 9.0 with the median of the October distribution fixed at 4.5. An admissions process calibrated like that does not then set an interview to check whether you can recall A level content.

So the interview is expected to take familiar material and keep going: further into the reasoning, past the first correct answer, into the assumptions underneath it. Cambridge sets out what it is assessing — your readiness to study at a high academic level, your ability to think critically and independently, your curiosity and openness to new ideas. None of those is a coverage test, and all of them are easier to observe on ground you already know, which is arguably the point of choosing that ground.

One consequence for the Physical stream is that the ESAT and the interview overlap more than they do for Biological candidates. Natural Sciences requires Mathematics 1 plus any two modules freely chosen from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2, so a candidate with Physics and Maths A levels had Physics and Mathematics 2 available as the obvious pick. UAT-UK publishes no breakdown of what candidates actually chose, so that is an expectation rather than a measurement — but where the Biological route can leave the interview probing a subject the test never touched, the Physical route more often revisits the same ground at greater depth. When almost everyone has the same three A levels

The reason familiarity cannot be the differentiator is in Cambridge’s published entrant profile. Among Natural Sciences (Physical) students who had studied A levels and started at Cambridge in 2018, 2019 and 2023, all of them took Mathematics, and the other common subjects fell like this:

Every figure in that table describes entrants in those three cohorts — students who took up a place — rather than applicants or offer-holders, and the cohort qualifier is Cambridge’s own. The two columns are not two versions of the same course: on Physics and on Biology they are close to inversions of each other.

The grade profile is tighter on this side too. Among those Physical entrants, 97% achieved at least A*A*A*; the same figure for Biological entrants in the same cohorts is 76%. The published minimum offer is the same for both streams, A*A*A at A level or 41-42 IB points with 776 at Higher Level, so the gap between the two columns is a description of the field rather than of the requirement.

Where the Physical stream’s real variation sits

Physics is near-universal and Mathematics is universal, so neither tells an interviewer much. The variable that actually moves within this stream is the third subject. Of the Physical entrants in those cohorts, 8% took all three of Biology, Chemistry and Physics; 81% took two of the sciences, and of that 81%, 98% took Physics and Chemistry; and 10% took only one of the three sciences, with Cambridge noting that almost all of those students took Further Mathematics.

That last group is the one worth naming, because it has no equivalent on the Biological side. It describes a recognisable route — Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics, without Chemistry — and it is roughly one Physical entrant in ten. A candidate on that route and a candidate with Physics and Chemistry are both squarely inside the stream, but the subjects they have “already studied” differ, and Cambridge’s sentence names both the stream and the courses you are currently studying as things that will affect the questions asked.

The first year makes the same distinction in its own structure. Natural Sciences draws on 14 departments, and Part IA asks you to choose three science subjects from a menu that runs from Biodiversity, Evolution and Ecology at one end to Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Materials Science and Physics at the other, plus a mathematics-based subject — and Cambridge names Mathematics for Physical Sciences and Mathematics for Biological Sciences as its two examples of that. A Physical candidate is choosing from the second half of that menu and taking the physical-sciences mathematics alongside it, which is a fair description of what the December conversation is trying to establish you are ready for.

Practically: if you are on the Further Maths route, the mathematical end of a physical problem is the ground Cambridge has told you to expect, and chemistry is the part you have least claim on. If you have Physics and Chemistry, the reverse. Neither is a deficiency — Cambridge requires Mathematics plus two other science or mathematics subjects and both combinations satisfy it — but they are different conversations, and working out which one you are walking into is a better use of late November than revising broadly.

You may be the Natural Sciences candidate who travels

Interview format at Cambridge is set College by College rather than centrally: interviews may be online or in person depending on which College is assessing your application and the course you have applied for, and you cannot usually request a particular format. Cambridge publishes a College-by-College table of formats for 2027 entry.

That table contains one course-level detail that matters specifically here. Natural Sciences (Physical) is the only Natural Sciences entry named anywhere in it. Jesus interviews UK-based applicants online except for ten named courses — Environment, Law, and Economics; History and Modern Languages; Linguistics and Modern Languages; Mathematics; Medicine; Modern and Medieval Languages; Music; Natural Sciences (Physical); Philosophy; and Veterinary Medicine — and for those, interviews are in person. Applicants based outside the UK are interviewed online.

Every other College’s row sets a default across its courses rather than singling out Natural Sciences, so the table says nothing either way about Biological. Two things follow. If Jesus is assessing you as a UK-based Physical applicant, you should expect to travel in December while a Biological applicant to the same College does not. And if another College is assessing you, its row and your invitation decide it — a College whose default is in person will interview you in person regardless of stream. Cambridge is clear that most applicants have one or two interviews lasting a total of 35 minutes to an hour, with some having three or four depending on subject and College, and that a winter-pool placement may bring an additional interview at a different College in January 2027.

Practice that matches the two sciences this stream actually uses

Before any of this: Cambridge states that companies offering interview preparation for a fee are not endorsed by the University, that they do not have access to any exclusive information, and that all official guidance is available free on the University’s website and official channels. That applies to us. Nobody selling you anything has inside knowledge of your interview.

What written practice does is narrower and still worth something: unfamiliar problems, worked to the end, so you find out where your reasoning stops before an interviewer does. For the Physical stream that means chemistry and physics rather than a single subject, and it means three separate packs, because no Natural Sciences pack exists:

Each is ten questions with a worked answer for every one, at £180. The hub carries 30 packs across 17 subjects, and nine subjects have a free sample — attached to subjects, not to individual packs. Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry sit under the free chemistry sample; Dynamics and Fields sits under the free physics sample. There is no Natural Sciences sample, because there is no Natural Sciences pack.

For a Physical candidate that is the wrong end of the course, and the three sets above are the closer match.

Does the IB Mathematics option matter more for Physical than Biological?

Yes, and Cambridge words the two differently on purpose. For Natural Sciences (Physical), if you are taking Higher Level Mathematics, applicants are expected to take Analysis and Approaches. For Natural Sciences (Biological) Cambridge only recommends it for the most competitive application and says Applications and Interpretations will also be considered. If Analysis and Approaches is not available at your school, Cambridge asks you to contact your shortlisted Colleges for further advice and guidance.

Could I be interviewed in person rather than online?
