Get the Physiology pack — £180Biomedical Sciences at Oxford is a single-honours BC98 degree in human biology, neuroscience and physiology for which the ESAT is compulsory and the interview is the last stage. Oxford ranks applicants for shortlisting on ESAT results and GCSE performance, publishes no ESAT cut-off, and in the 2025 round shortlisted 140 of 530 applicants — roughly three interviewees per place. Each one was interviewed by two colleges, and this cycle those interviews fall on Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 December 2026.
Two Oxford interviews, on 9 and 10 December 2026, assessed without your ESAT score in the room. What they do assess is whether you can reason out loud through a mechanism you have not been asked about before — kidney reabsorption, a saturable transporter, a hormone axis under feedback.

Oxford's Medical Sciences Division describes the mechanism plainly: “As part of the process to decide which applicants are called to interview, we establish a ranking on the basis of ESAT results and GCSE performance (both quantitative and objective measures).” Two inputs, one output — a shortlist. Nothing in that sentence says the score follows you any further.
It is worth being precise about what kind of ranking this is, because candidates routinely mistake it for a threshold. There is no threshold. Asked directly what the ESAT cut-off is, Oxford answers: “We do not have a cut-off in terms of ESAT scores; you compete with other applicants, so it is difficult to predict how well you would need to perform to reach the shortlist.” A relative ranking against whoever else applied in the same year cannot produce a number you could have aimed at in advance, and any figure circulating as “the ESAT score you need for Biomedical Sciences” has been invented somewhere other than Oxford.
The second thing the published process makes clear is that the ranking is not the end of shortlisting. Oxford: “All applicants who do not make the initial short-list are then reviewed in detail, taking into account any individual circumstances that might indicate that their academic performance is likely to underestimate their potential. As a result of this process, additional applicants are added to the short-list.” The word carrying the weight there is initial. A first pass on ESAT and GCSE produces a provisional list; a human review of everyone below it then adds more. If your ESAT felt poor on the day, the conclusion “I will not be shortlisted” is not one Oxford's own description supports.
What the ESAT does not do is measure any of the things a tutorial-style interview is built to test. It is a timed multiple-choice paper: no working is seen, no hint is offered, no follow-up question arrives when you take a wrong turn. Oxford calls the interview “more like a short tutorial with someone who knows it well” and says tutors use it to see “how you think, respond to new ideas and engage with material beyond your school or college syllabus”. Those are close to disjoint skills. Practising more multiple-choice questions in the weeks before December trains the thing that has already been measured. Oxford publishes a course-by-course interview timetable, and the Biomedical Sciences row is unusually exact: “Each shortlisted candidate will be interviewed by two colleges, with the interviews with the first college on Wednesday 9 December and interviews with the second college on Thursday 10 December.” Both days are named, both colleges are accounted for, and the timetable records no additional-interview round for this course — the column for further interviews reads not applicable.
That is a materially different shape from the courses interviewing the following week. Oxford Computer Science and the mathematics joint schools run from Monday 14 to Thursday 17 December 2026, with some colleges starting in the week commencing Monday 7 December, and candidates are told by 2pm on Wednesday 16 December whether further interviews follow. Biomedical Sciences candidates have neither the longer window nor the wait: two days, two colleges, done. One detail in that table is easy to misread and worth stating carefully. UAT-UK, which runs the ESAT, sends results to universities and to candidates on different schedules: “Test results will be sent to your UCAS choices shortly after testing. Results will be released to candidates in November”, and separately, “Scores are released around 4 weeks after your test date.” Oxford therefore holds your ESAT result while it builds the shortlist, at a point when you do not yet have it. The silence between the test and the invitation is not an absence of news; it is the part of the process that happens without you.
Every Oxford interview this cycle is online. The university states that “Shortlisted applicants will be invited to online interviews in December 2026”, so there is no travel to plan and no college to find. What there is to plan is a quiet room on two consecutive weekday mornings in term time, and a device you have already tested rather than one you meet on the day.
This is the question that should reshape how the remaining weeks are spent, and Oxford answers it in a single line of its published Biomedical Sciences statistics: “Colleges interviewed blind of college choice (or allocation) and BMSAT score.” In the round those figures describe, the tutors sitting opposite each candidate did not know how that candidate had performed on the admissions test, and did not know which college the candidate had put down.
Read that carefully, because it cuts both ways and both directions are useful. A strong test score buys you the room and then stops working; it will not carry a hesitant interview. A test that went badly, if you were shortlisted anyway, is not a shadow you are arguing against — nobody in the interview knows it happened. Candidates spend a great deal of December energy on a number that, at the point it would matter most, is not in the room.
The published figures support the same reading from a different direction. Across the 2025 round, the mean admissions-test score rose sharply between the whole applicant pool and the shortlist, and then barely moved between the shortlist and the offer-holders. In other words the test did nearly all of its discriminating work at the shortlisting stage and almost none after it. We have deliberately not reproduced those score values here: they were recorded on the BMSAT, the test Oxford used for 2026 entry, and Biomedical Sciences applicants for 2027 entry sit the ESAT, which reports on a different scale entirely. Presenting one as a target for the other would be arithmetic dressed as advice. No published ESAT benchmark exists for this course.
What tutors do bring into the interview is the rest of your application. Oxford notes that the discussion “may draw on aspects of your application such as your UCAS personal statement or submitted written work”. If you wrote about a paper, a placement or a book in September, it is live material in December, and reading your own personal statement again is the cheapest preparation available.
It is neither, and the distinction is not pedantry — the three courses sit in different places in the admissions-test landscape, so advice written for one is actively misleading for another.
Biomedical Sciences is BC98. UAT-UK's 2027-entry course list records it under the University of Oxford as “Biomedical Sciences BC98 ESAT Mathematics 1 + any two modules chosen from: Biology Chemistry Physics Mathematics 2”, and Oxford's own course page repeats the requirement: “All applicants must take the Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) as part of their application.”
Oxford’s Biology course, UCAS code C100, does not appear on that list at all, and states on its own page: “You do not need to take a written test as part of an application for this course.” Our own Oxford Biological Sciences interview page is headed accordingly, and everything it says about preparing without a test is correct for that course and wrong for this one. Medicine is different again: it uses the UCAT, and the interview format, the ethical component and the published offer rates are all its own — which is why we keep them on a separate Oxbridge Medicine interview page rather than folding them in here.
The overlap that does exist is in subject matter rather than process. Biomedical Sciences at Oxford leads to a degree in either Neuroscience or Cell and Systems Biology, and the interview reflects that: physiology, cellular mechanism and quantitative biology, not clinical practice and not whole-organism ecology. A candidate who prepares from a general Oxbridge biology reading list will have covered a good deal that this interview does not reach for.

It is set by Robert Wilkins of St Edmund Hall and reads: “Why is sugar in your urine a good indicator that you might have diabetes?” Oxford's own gloss on it is the instructive part: “This question builds on general knowledge and material studied at school in biology and chemistry to assess how students approach a clinically-relevant problem.”
Notice what the question is not. It is not obscure, it does not require anything beyond A-level biology and chemistry, and it has a well-known answer. The examinable part is the route: from the fact that the kidney filters glucose out of the blood, to the fact that it normally reabsorbs essentially all of it, to the idea of a transport mechanism that can be saturated, to the consequence that above some plasma concentration the surplus is not recovered and appears in urine. A candidate who says “because blood sugar is high” has given a true answer and shown nothing. A candidate who reasons to saturable reabsorption has shown the whole thing.
Two habits follow directly, and both are trainable in the weeks available. The first is to narrate the mechanism rather than name the phenomenon: say what is being filtered, by what, into what, and what limits it. The second is to keep going when a follow-up arrives. Oxford tells candidates that “There may well be more than one right way to answer a question in which case tutors will be more interested in exploring your thought process”, and that many questions are designed to test how you handle the unfamiliar. A follow-up is not a correction.
Working problems of this shape out loud, against a full written solution you can compare your reasoning to afterwards, is the part most candidates skip. It is also the part the interview measures.
Oxford publishes Biomedical Sciences admissions statistics in more detail than most courses, and the shape they describe is worth internalising before December. In the 2025 round: “In 2025 we received 530 UCAS applications”, of which “140 applicants were shortlisted for interview”, and “Approximately three applicants were invited for interview for each available place.” The course page gives the three-year picture for 2023 to 2025 as 24% interviewed, 8% successful, intake 45.
Set against the university as a whole — Oxford “typically receives over 23,000 applications for around 3,300 places every year and shortlists approximately 10,000 candidates” — Biomedical Sciences is a course where the shortlist is the narrow gate and the interview is a genuine contest rather than a formality. Oxford reports the outcome for those who reach it as “38% of shortlisted male applicants and 36% of shortlisted female applicants” receiving an offer.
Two structural points come with those figures. Each shortlisted applicant “was interviewed at two colleges: the college of preference, or allocation if an open application was made, and one other assigned by computer”, and 33% of offers were made by a college other than the one the candidate had chosen. Your second interview is not a consolation round and the college that eventually offers you a place is very often not the one you named.
The international picture is tighter and is worth stating with its own denominator rather than blurred into the whole: 219 applicants classified as EU or international registered for the admissions test, 44 were shortlisted, and 7 received an offer.
None of this changes what you can do between now and the interview, which is the point of quoting it. The shortlist is decided on evidence already submitted. The two December days are decided on how you reason out loud about problems you have not seen, in front of tutors who do not know your test score.

Oxford says invitations go out “usually between the middle of November and early December”, and its published timetable for this cycle puts Biomedical Sciences interviews on Wednesday 9 December 2026 with the first college and Thursday 10 December 2026 with the second. Unlike several other Oxford courses, Biomedical Sciences has no additional-interview round scheduled after those two days: the timetable records that column as not applicable. Every interview is held online.
In the 2025 round they did not. Oxford's published Biomedical Sciences statistics state that “Colleges interviewed blind of college choice (or allocation) and BMSAT score.” The test decides who is invited; it is then set aside for the conversation itself. That is the single most useful thing to know in the weeks before December, because it means the interview is not a negotiation about a number you cannot change. It is assessed on what you say in the room.
No. They are separate degrees with separate UCAS codes and opposite admissions-test positions. Biomedical Sciences is BC98 and appears on UAT-UK's 2027-entry course list as an ESAT course. Biological Sciences is not on that list at all, and Oxford’s own page for it says: “You do not need to take a written test as part of an application for this course.” If you are reading advice written for Oxford Biological Sciences, none of its test guidance applies to you, and vice versa. Biomedical Sciences is also not Medicine, which uses the UCAT.
Oxford's own course page states that “All Oxford applicants must take three modules, comprising Mathematics 1 and any two further modules from the following four options:BiologyChemistryMathematics 2Physics”. Mathematics 1 is therefore fixed and the remaining two are yours to choose from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics 2 and Physics. UAT-UK's course list records the same combination against BC98. Module selection cannot be changed after booking without cancelling and re-booking the test.
Oxford publishes this split by sex rather than as a single figure: in the 2025 round offers went to “38% of shortlisted male applicants and 36% of shortlisted female applicants”. Across all applicants the three-year average for 2023 to 2025 is 24% interviewed and 8% successful, against an intake of 45. Being shortlisted is the steep filter; after it, rather more than a third of those in the room are made an offer.
