A Level History is one of the most demanding and rewarding humanities subjects available at sixth form. It develops critical thinking, analytical writing, and the ability to evaluate evidence -- skills that are highly valued in university applications for History, Law, PPE, Politics, International Relations, and many other disciplines. It is also a subject where the gap between GCSE and A Level demands is particularly steep, and where targeted tutoring makes a significant difference.

What A Level History Covers

A Level History topics vary by exam board and by the specific units selected by each school or college. Common topic areas include:

British History

Tudor England (Henry VIII, the Reformation, Elizabeth I), Stuart Britain (Charles I, the Civil War, the Restoration), the Industrial Revolution and 19th-century political reform, and 20th-century topics including World War I, the interwar period, World War II, and post-war British politics.

European History

Weimar Germany and the rise of National Socialism, Nazi Germany and the Second World War, Stalinist Russia and the Soviet Union, the Cold War, the French Revolution and Napoleon, and 20th-century European politics.

American History

The Civil War and Reconstruction, the Civil Rights Movement, US foreign policy in the 20th century, the New Deal, and the Vietnam era.

The Transition from GCSE to A Level History

One of the most common observations made by A Level History students is that what worked at GCSE does not transfer automatically to A Level. At GCSE, descriptive narrative accounts -- telling the story of what happened and why -- can earn strong marks. At A Level, the examiners require constant analytical engagement with the question, evidence of historiographical awareness, and the ability to construct and sustain a complex historical argument across a full-length essay response. Students who continue to write descriptively at A Level consistently underperform relative to their ability.
