Pearson Edexcel A-level Chemistry is assessed under a single live specification, 9CH0, now on Issue 3 (February 2024), with three written papers sat in one May/June series and a separately certificated Science Practical Endorsement. Its Ofqual qualification number is 601/5646/6. Unlike several other exam boards, Edexcel runs no second, separately accredited Chemistry route.

That gap goes deeper than assessment alone. Ofqual's register lists this A-level's assessment methods as “Coursework, Written Examination”; the AS qualification's own entry lists “Written Examination” only. Pearson's specification never once uses the word “coursework” for the Practical Endorsement — that classification is the regulator's own bucketing, not the board's language.

Does Pearson award A-level Chemistry through more than one route?

No, and this needs stating plainly because it is not true of every board this year. Pearson's current subject page for Chemistry — qualifications.pearson.com/en/qualifications/edexcel-a-levels/chemistry-2015.html — was read directly this session rather than assumed from how other boards run their chemistry offer. It carries exactly one “A level” specification tab, one A-level specification PDF download and one companion AS-level PDF; there is no second, separately accredited “Chemistry A”/“Chemistry B” split of the kind another board runs for the same subject. Every Edexcel A-level Chemistry student, whichever school they attend, sits the same 9CH0 specification.

The specification itself confirms its own edition in the running footer of every content page: “Specification – Issue 3 – February 2024”. The companion AS-level document, 8CH0, was checked independently and its own title page also reads Issue 3, so there is no mismatch between the AS and A-level documents' issue numbers. The qualification is fully linear: “Students must complete all assessment in May/June in any single year”, so all three written papers and the practical evidence behind the Endorsement are finalised in one series, with no modular resit built into the two-year course structure.

What does Ofqual's own register show that Pearson's specification does not say in so many words?

Ofqual's register entry for A-level Chemistry, reached this session by requesting qualification number 601/5646/6 directly at find-a-qualification.services.ofqual.gov.uk, states its assessment methods as “Coursework, Written Examination”. It also records 360 guided learning hours, a grading scale of A*/A/B/C/D/E, status “Available to learners” and national availability “England, International” — the register does not name Wales. Regulation of the qualification began on 12 February 2015 and it went operational on 1 September 2015.

The “Coursework” label is the interesting part, because Pearson's own 110-page specification never uses that word anywhere to describe the Science Practical Endorsement. The specification calls it a teacher-assessed component, graded against Common Practical Assessment Criteria, entirely separate from the three externally examined written papers. Ofqual's own bucketing of that teacher-assessed work as “coursework” is the regulator's classification, not Pearson's chosen wording, and neither document states the gap between the two directly.

The companion AS Chemistry entry, qualification number 601/5647/8 and checked at its own register page, lists “Written Examination” only, with 180 guided learning hours — exactly half the A-level's 360. That is the regulator's side independently confirming what Pearson's specification says in its own terms: AS Chemistry carries no Practical Endorsement, so there is nothing for the register to classify as coursework.

How are Edexcel's three A-level papers weighted by assessment objective, and does one carry more analysis and evaluation than the others?

Edexcel's specification prints assessment-objective weightings as a share of the whole qualification, paper by paper, rather than as a percentage of each paper's own marks. For A-level Chemistry the published table reads: Paper 1 carries 11–13% AO1, 12–14% AO2 and 5–7% AO3, totalling 30% of the qualification; Paper 2 carries the same spread for another 30%; and Paper 3 carries 8–10% AO1, 16–18% AO2 and 13–15% AO3, totalling 40%.

The right-hand column is not a number Edexcel publishes anywhere — it is worked out by dividing each paper's AO3 share of the whole qualification by that paper's own share of the qualification. For Paper 3: (13 to 15) ÷ 40 = roughly 32.5% to 37.5%. For Papers 1 and 2: (5 to 7) ÷ 30 = roughly 16.7% to 23.3% each. Edexcel prints only the whole-qualification figures in the left three columns; the per-paper share in the fourth column is this page's own calculation, stated as such rather than presented as the board's own published figure. Once normalised this way, Paper 3 carries proportionally far more analysis-and-evaluation weight than Papers 1 or 2 — a genuinely uneven split that a reader would not see from the raw specification table alone.

What are Edexcel's 16 core practicals, and how do they feed the Science Practical Endorsement?

Edexcel's specification names sixteen numbered core practicals, compiled this session by extracting the full 110-page PDF and locating every “CORE PRACTICAL” heading in order. Practical 13 is split into 13a and 13b, so the sixteen numbers cover sixteen distinct activities:

  2. Prepare a standard solution from a solid acid and use it to find the concentration of a solution of sodium hydroxide
  3. Find the concentration of a solution of hydrochloric acid

The Science Practical Endorsement does not require all sixteen. The specification states that “evidence must be provided for the 12 practical techniques listed in Appendix 5c through a minimum of 12 core practical activities” — four more prescribed experiments than the endorsement strictly needs, which gives an Edexcel centre some room to choose which sixteen-minus-four to prioritise if timetabling is tight. Students' work is assessed by teachers using Common Practical Assessment Criteria (CPAC), and “the correct application of CPAC to students' work will be monitored through a system of visits to centres”, coordinated across the exam boards by JCQ. The Endorsement is reported separately from the A*–E grade, as Pass or Not Classified, and contributes no marks to it.

Three absences are worth publishing plainly, because each was searched for and genuinely not found rather than assumed absent. First: the current Issue 3 specification has no “private candidates” section and no “re-sits” or “shelf life” section at all — a full-text search for “private candidate”, “re-sit”, “resit” and “shelf life” across all 110 pages returns zero matches for every term. Where the specification addresses entry, its “Student entry” section reads only: “Details of how to enter students for the examinations for this qualification can be found in our UK Information Manual” — a cross-subject administrative document, not Chemistry-specific guidance, and outside the scope of a specification comparison page.

Second: filtering the qualification's own live news page at its Qualification news category returns only two items, both from 2015 and 2016 and both about the original rollout of the Practical Endorsement. The other 75 items in the full feed, the most recent dated 3 September 2026, are routine monthly “Teaching Science update” bulletins covering training and results-day administration, none naming a specification point or a mark-scheme change. That is a genuine contrast worth stating plainly rather than manufacturing an equivalence that is not there: this specification simply has not had anything comparable to a dated, topic-specific mark-scheme notice in the period searched.

A quirk in how Edexcel publishes its own discount code

Edexcel's Appendix 3 does not print a DfE discount code at all. It states only: “Discount codes are published by DfE. Please see the GOV.UK website”, deferring entirely to the Department for Education's own published list rather than stating a number in the specification itself — confirmed by a full-text search for “1110” across all 110 pages, which returns zero matches.

The code itself, 1110, was found this session by downloading DfE's own spreadsheet from gov.uk and reading it directly with openpyxl. On the current performance-tables tab, qualification numbers 60156466 (A-level) and 601/5647/8 (AS) both carry discount code 1110 — identical for both qualifications. Reading the source document directly, rather than taking either board's own page on trust, is what confirms it independently.
