Edexcel A-Level Further Maths (9FM0): Grade Boundaries by Option
Pearson publishes a separate Assessment Objectives table and a separate grade boundary for each of the ten legal option pairs — not one boundary for the whole qualification.
Edexcel A-Level Further Mathematics (9FM0) is Pearson’s Level 3 Advanced GCE in Further Mathematics, sat as two compulsory Core Pure papers plus two optional papers chosen from ten legal pairs, all marked out of 300. In the June 2026 series, Pearson’s own grade boundaries put the A* threshold at 262 marks for one legal pair and 275 for another — a thirteen-mark spread caused purely by option choice.

Which edition of the Edexcel Further Maths specification is this page describing?
Which two optional papers a student can legally combine — and why there are exactly ten pairs — is set out in full on our A-Level Further Maths board comparison, including Edexcel’s own matching-pair rule. This page assumes that choice has already been made and goes further: into what changes, on Edexcel’s own documents, once it has.
Before any of that, the specification itself needs pinning down, because a spec code alone never proves which edition is live. The document actually in force for A-level Further Mathematics is 9FM0, Specification Issue 4, June 2023, downloaded directly from Pearson’s own document store rather than assumed from the code: the PDF’s own title page states “A Level Further Mathematics Specification Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Further Mathematics (9FM0) First teaching from September 2017 First certification from 2019 Issue 4,” and every page footer confirms the same Issue 4, June 2023 edition. The qualification’s Ofqual Qualification Number is 603/1499/0, and Ofqual’s own register — searched directly by that QN at find-a-qualification.services.ofqual.gov.uk, since the old register.ofqual.gov.uk domain now redirects to a static stub — lists its status as “Available to learners” with “National availability: England, Northern Ireland, International.” Wales is not listed. That is the register’s own wording; it does not itself explain the absence, which may be a Qualifications Wales regulatory matter rather than a Pearson choice, so this page states the listing rather than asserting a firm conclusion about Wales.
Does choosing different optional papers change how your marks are actually weighted?
Pearson’s specification states plainly that “there are ten different routes through the Advanced GCE in Further Mathematics qualification” — Routes A to K, skipping I — and it does not treat them as ten interchangeable relabellings of the same exam. Each route carries its own Assessment Objectives table, splitting every paper’s marks across AO1 (using standard techniques), AO2 (reasoning and communicating mathematically) and AO3 (solving problems). The two compulsory Core Pure papers carry an identical AO split on every route. The optional papers do not.

A student sitting Further Pure Mathematics 2 as their second optional paper is examined on nearly three times as much AO2 as one sitting Further Mechanics 1, and roughly a third as much AO3 — a real difference in what “the same A-level” actually tests, driven entirely by which optional paper a school has entered its cohort for. Despite that spread, every one of the ten routes converges on an identical qualification-level total: AO1 48–52%, AO2 at least 15% and AO3 at least 15%, unchanged across every route. Unlike the equivalent table for plain A-Level Maths, which states an explicit ceiling for AO2 and AO3 (23–27% each), Further Maths states only a floor for both, with no published ceiling — a looser design choice specific to this qualification.
Does Pearson publish one grade boundary for Further Maths, or one per option pair?
One per option pair, and the practical effect is a genuine 300-mark qualification where the same overall grade takes a different number of marks depending on the two optional papers taken. Pearson’s June 2026 grade-boundaries document lists ten separate 9FM0 “Subject” rows, each headed by a distinct “Paper(s)” combination, all sharing the same 300-mark maximum — confirming every optional paper carries an equal share of those marks whichever pair is chosen. What differs is where the grade lines actually fall.
At the top grade, the spread is real. The A* boundary for Paper(s) 01 02 3D 4D — Decision Mathematics 1 and 2 — sits at 262 marks out of 300. The A* boundary for Paper(s) 01 02 3A 4A — Further Pure Mathematics 1 and 2 — sits at 263. The A* boundary for Paper(s) 01 02 3A 3B — Further Pure Mathematics 1 and Further Statistics 1 — sits at 275 out of 300, the highest of the ten. That is a thirteen-mark spread between the lowest and highest A* boundary, in the same series, on the same qualification code, caused entirely by which two optional papers a school entered its students for.

Further Statistics 1’s 8 topics is the longest list of any optional paper, and Further Mechanics 1 and Further Mechanics 2 are the shortest at 5 each — a genuine difference in breadth a student weighing options should know before their school fixes the choice for the whole cohort. Formulae specific to Further Maths are also additional to, not folded into, the shared exam booklet: the specification states that the formulae listed in its own Appendix 1 “will not appear in the booklet ‘Mathematical Formulae and Statistical Tables’ which will be provided for use with the paper,” so they must be memorised rather than looked up on the day.

What does Edexcel’s own calculator appendix require for Further Maths that it does not require for plain Maths?
Every A-Level Maths student needs a calculator that clears a Department for Education floor, and on plain A-Level Maths Edexcel’s Appendix 3 restates that floor without adding to it. Further Maths is different. Edexcel’s own Appendix 3 for 9FM0 states: “Calculators used must include the following features: an iterative function the ability to perform calculations with matrices up to at least order 3 x 3 the ability to compute summary statistics and access probabilities from standard statistical distributions.” The matrix requirement is the one feature this appendix adds beyond the shared floor, and it has no equivalent in Edexcel’s plain A-Level Maths Appendix 3 — a genuine subject-level difference, not merely a board-level one, because it follows directly from Further Maths’ own compulsory Core Pure content on matrices.

Pearson’s own Assessment Objectives tables show Further Pure Mathematics 2 carrying an AO2 share of 8.33–9.67% against Further Mechanics 1’s 3.00–4.33% — nearly three times as much reasoning-and-communication weighting on one optional paper as the other, with AO3 running the other way. Despite that, every one of the ten routes converges on an identical qualification-level total of AO1 48–52%, AO2 at least 15% and AO3 at least 15%, so the difference sits inside the optional papers, not in the qualification’s headline balance.
What does Edexcel’s calculator appendix require for Further Maths that it doesn’t for plain A-Level Maths?
Appendix 3 of the Further Maths specification requires a calculator with an iterative function, the ability to compute summary statistics and access probabilities from standard statistical distributions — and, uniquely to Further Maths, ‘the ability to perform calculations with matrices up to at least order 3 x 3’. Edexcel’s plain A-Level Maths Appendix 3 stops at the first three features; the matrix requirement has no equivalent there, which makes it a genuine subject-level difference rather than a board-level one.

Ofqual’s register lists 9FM0’s national availability as England, Northern Ireland and International; Wales does not appear in that list. The register does not itself state a reason for the absence, and it may reflect a Qualifications Wales regulatory matter rather than a Pearson decision, so this is the register’s own wording rather than a firm claim that the qualification is barred in Wales.
