Edexcel GCSE Biology is Pearson's separate-sciences specification for Biology, examined at Foundation or Higher tier across two written papers of 100 marks each, under code 1BI0. What does the code 1BI0 identify, and is it the only current edition?

Pearson publishes Edexcel GCSE Biology under specification code 1BI0, currently Issue 4, dated March 2024. Our GCSE Biology overview explains what a code on a statement of entry means in general, using AQA's own accreditation number as its example; 1BI0 is Edexcel's equivalent, and it carries a separate trap of its own. Pearson's HTML specification pages render entirely through JavaScript and return no usable text to a plain page fetch, so the only reliable route to the specification's actual content is the PDF itself, fetched and decompressed directly rather than read from the page a search engine indexes.

Ofqual's register lists six Pearson or Edexcel qualifications that match a search for Edexcel GCSE Biology: an older Biology A, an older Biology B, an earlier plain GCSE in Biology, a Level 1/2 GCSE In Biology, this qualification, and an International GCSE. Five of those six carry the status No longer awarded. Only 1BI0 is marked Available to learners, which makes the Ofqual qualification number, 601/8610/0, the more reliable identifier where an entry slip has gone missing or a school records the subject only by its long title on a certificate. Four paper sub-codes sit beneath the main code: 1BI0/1F and 1BI0/1H for Paper 1 at Foundation and Higher tier, and 1BI0/2F and 1BI0/2H for Paper 2.

One structural choice is worth flagging before the paper-by-paper detail, because it recurs later on this page. Pearson's own Sciences (2016) qualification page switches between separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics tabs and a fourth tab labelled only CombinedScience — no separate brand name, where AQA splits its own double award into two named qualifications. The Biology specification itself is consistent with that: it refers throughout to "the GCSE in Combined Science" and never to a named alternative. The same naming choice shows up again below, in how Edexcel flags which core practicals belong to Biology alone.

How are the two papers built — and why does Topic 1 appear on both?

Every Edexcel Biology student sits two written papers, and unlike a specification that gives each paper a clean, non-overlapping half of the content, 1BI0 repeats one topic across both. Paper 1 covers Topics 1 to 5: Key concepts in biology, Cells and control, Genetics, Natural selection and genetic modification, and Health, disease and the development of medicines. Paper 2 covers Topic 1 again, this time alongside Topics 6 to 9: Plant structures and their functions, Animal coordination, control and homeostasis, Exchange and transport in animals, and Ecosystems and material cycles. Physics and Maths Tutor's own past-paper index for Edexcel Biology lists Key Concepts in Biology under both Paper 1 and Paper 2 independently, which corroborates the specification's content list rather than merely repeating it.

Both papers are identical in shape: 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks, 50% of the qualification, ten questions, with calculators permitted throughout. Of each paper's 100 marks, 27 are overlap questions set to appear on both the Foundation and Higher tier versions of that paper — a fixed per-paper mark count, stated the same way for Paper 1 and Paper 2. Because Topic 1 sits on both papers, a student who treats Paper 1 as the end of that topic is leaving marks on the table for Paper 2; a revision plan built purely around "which topic is on which paper" misses the one topic Edexcel deliberately examines twice.

The eight core practicals Edexcel requires — and the two flagged for Biology only

Edexcel's own term is core practical, not AQA's required practical, and the count is Edexcel's own: eight, not ten. The specification requires every student to carry out all eight, identified by their own spec-point codes rather than a separate numbering scheme.

Two of the eight, 1.13B and 5.18B, carry a B suffix. Edexcel's specification defines that marker directly: statement numbers with a B in them "refer to content which is only in the GCSE in Biology and is not found in the GCSE in Combined Science." That is a different mechanism from AQA's own approach to flagging biology-only content, which runs through a separate set of apparatus and technique codes rather than marking the spec-point number itself. An Edexcel Combined Science student therefore never carries out the food-test practical (1.13B) or the antimicrobial-substances practical (5.18B) under this specification. Centres must confirm all eight are complete on a Practical Science Statement, due to Pearson by 15 April in the year students sit their exams — an earlier deadline than most families expect, since it falls months before the written papers themselves.

How Edexcel weights AO1, AO2 and AO3 — an exact split, not a range

Edexcel weights the whole qualification 40% AO1 (knowledge and understanding), 40% AO2 (application of knowledge and understanding) and 20% AO3 (analysis of information and ideas). What differs from a scheme that states a range for each objective on each paper is how Edexcel expresses that split at paper level: not as a range, but as an exact number of percentage points.

Because each paper is worth exactly 50% of the qualification, 20/20/10 of the whole qualification on Paper 1 is the same as 40%/40%/20% of that paper's own 100 marks — and the same figures repeat, unchanged, on Paper 2. Edexcel's published tolerance of plus or minus 3 percentage points is attached only to the Total for GCSE row in its own table, not to Paper 1 or Paper 2 individually. The specification also names synoptic assessment as a distinct feature: questions that "naturally draw together different aspects of biology," which can appear on either paper rather than being confined to a single end-of-course section.

What did June 2026 grade boundaries show — and what does 84 marks reveal about tiering?

Pearson published confirmed June 2026 boundaries for 1BI0 in raw marks, out of 200 on each tier. Read down the Higher and Foundation columns together and one figure appears twice: 84 marks out of the same 200. On the Higher tier paper, 84 is the grade 4 boundary — the threshold that most often decides progression to A-level Biology study. On the Foundation tier paper, the same 84 marks is the grade 3 boundary, one grade lower. A Higher-tier student and a Foundation-tier student can therefore submit the identical raw mark and walk away with grades one apart, not because either paper was marked differently, but because tier sets a different ceiling and a different scale underneath it. Tier decisions are usually made months before the exam, on mock evidence, and remain reversible up to the entry deadline; a family weighing that decision for 1BI0 specifically now has the marks in front of them, not just the tier label.

What does the code 1BI0 mean, and is it the only current Edexcel GCSE Biology specification?

1BI0 is Pearson's specification code for GCSE Biology, currently at Issue 4, published in March 2024. Edexcel's own specification lists Key concepts in biology as Topic 1 on Paper 1 and repeats it, unlabelled as a repeat, at the head of Paper 2's content list alongside Topics 6 to 9. An independent revision site, Physics and Maths Tutor, lists the same topic under both papers in its own past-paper index, which corroborates the specification rather than merely repeating it. The specification does not explain why; the practical effect is that concepts from Topic 1 can be examined on either paper, so revision cannot treat Topic 1 as finished once Paper 1 is sat.

What are the eight core practicals in Edexcel GCSE Biology, and what does the B suffix mean?

On Higher tier, out of 200 marks, June 2026 boundaries were grade 9 at 170, grade 8 at 158, grade 7 at 147, grade 6 at 126, grade 5 at 105, grade 4 at 84 and grade 3 at 73. On Foundation tier, also out of 200, boundaries were grade 5 at 132, grade 4 at 115, grade 3 at 84, grade 2 at 53 and grade 1 at 22. The same 84 marks therefore sat in two different places: a grade 4 on Higher tier, and a grade 3 on Foundation tier.

Does Edexcel's combined science route have a brand name, like AQA's Trilogy?

No. Pearson's own Sciences (2016) qualification page switches between separate Biology, Chemistry, Physics and a fourth tab labelled only CombinedScience, with no separate brand name attached. The Biology specification itself refers throughout to the GCSE in Combined Science, never to a named alternative. That is a different approach from AQA, whose combined award is split into two named qualifications. It does not change what a Combined Science student studies, but it does mean a parent searching for a named Edexcel double-award qualification by brand will not find one.
