Eduqas enters A-level Chemistry under a single qualification code, A410QS — not one half of a shared route with Eduqas AS Chemistry, B410QS, as some course-choice pages imply. Eduqas's own reference-codes table lists them as separately numbered qualifications (601/5645/4 and 601/5501/2), and its AS specification states plainly: “Assessments at AS cannot contribute to an A level grade.” This page covers what is specific to the A-level — AO weighting, the Practical Endorsement, component codes, and the WJEC distinction — rather than the five-board comparison on our A-Level Chemistry guide.

Eduqas and WJEC are two brands of the same legal awarding body, WJEC CBAC Ltd, but they are not interchangeable specifications. Eduqas's own A-level Chemistry specification cover page states plainly that the qualification is “not available for candidates in maintained schools and colleges in Wales” — accredited by Ofqual, England's regulator. WJEC's own Chemistry specification for Wales carries the mirror-image statement: “This Welsh Government regulated qualification is not available to centres in England.” Neither is a version of the other for a different market — each is its own accredited qualification, with its own separate entry codes: WJEC's are 1410QS (A level) and 2410QS (AS), against Eduqas's A410QS and B410QS.
Ofqual's own register corroborates the split independently of either specification's own wording. The regulator's entry for Eduqas's A410QS names the awarding organisation as “WJEC-CBAC” and records the qualification number as 601/5645/4; WJEC's own Chemistry specification prints entirely different numbers for the Welsh qualification — GCE A level QN 601/5847/5, GCE AS QN 601/5866/9. A reader in England who lands on a search result for the Welsh specification, or vice versa, is not looking at an alternative route through the same course — they are looking at a different qualification, published by the same company under a different brand name for a different national regulator.
A410QS and B410QS are sometimes described as two routes through one A-level — an AS-then-A2 staging structure, or a foundation/higher-style split. Neither reading survives contact with Eduqas's own documents. A410QS and B410QS are two separately-accredited qualifications, assessed, dated and regulated as such.
Start with the codes themselves. Eduqas's qualification page lists them in a single reference table: “Qual Code A410QS A Level B410QS AS Level QN 601/5645/4 A Level 601/5501/2 AS Level.” The A-level specification itself repeats its own code in its “Making entries” section — “WJEC Eduqas A level Chemistry: A410QS” — and the AS specification does the same for its own code, “WJEC Eduqas AS Chemistry B410QS”. Each document is genuinely silent about the other: the A-level specification contains no reference anywhere to B410QS or 601/5501/2, and the AS specification contains none to A410QS or 601/5645/4.
The AS specification is also explicit about what the separation means for a student's result: “AS qualifications are free-standing and are awarded in their own right. Assessments at AS cannot contribute to an A level grade.” That is a stronger statement than “AS is worth less” — it says an AS grade cannot be combined with further study to produce an A-level grade at all. The two documents differ in scale as well as in wording: the AS specification runs to 34 pages against the A-level's 62, is assessed by two components totalling 160 marks rather than three totalling 300, was first awarded in 2016 (a year before the A-level's 2017), and carries no Practical Endorsement of its own.
Ofqual's register entry for the A level and its separate entry for the AS confirm the split from outside Eduqas's own documents: the A level's assessment methods are recorded as “Practical Demonstration/Assignment, Written Examination” — reflecting the Practical Endorsement — while the AS's are “Written Examination” only. Both show as “Available to learners.” Neither supersedes the other; they are two live, concurrent qualifications, not two stages of one.

What it does not carry — because it is a five-board comparison, not an Eduqas-specific page — is the breakdown by assessment objective. Eduqas's own A-level specification prints it component by component:

AO2 (application of knowledge) is the largest single objective at 42.7% of the whole qualification — heavier than AO1 (knowledge and understanding) at 30.7% and more than half again the weight of AO3 (analysis, interpretation and evaluation) at 26.7%. Components 1 and 2 carry an identical AO split; Component 3, the shortest paper, weights all three objectives equally at 6.7% each.

Our A-Level Chemistry guide answers “which practicals does each board actually require” for AQA, Edexcel and OCR in detail — but says nothing about Eduqas. Eduqas's own requirement is a minimum of 12 practical activities, assessed not by exam but by teachers marking against Common Practical Assessment Criteria (CPAC), reported as a separate Pass or Not Classified result that never enters the A*–E grade. Eduqas's specification states it directly: “A minimum of 12 practical activities to be carried out by each learner… Teachers will assess learners against Common Practical Assessment Criteria (CPAC)… There will be no separate assessment of practical skills for AS qualifications.”
That last sentence is the reason AS Chemistry (B410QS) carries no Practical Endorsement at all, and it is not an oversight: the endorsement is a feature of the two-year A-level qualification specifically, not of Eduqas Chemistry in general. A student who moves from the AS course onto the full A-level therefore starts the Practical Endorsement requirement from nothing — there is no partial credit to carry over from the AS year, because the AS specification never asked for any.
Eduqas's own June 2026 grade-points document sets A410QS's boundaries at A* 222, A 193, B 164, C 135, D 106 and E 78, out of 300 — the same figures already on our A-Level Chemistry guide, independently re-checked against Eduqas's own PDF for this page rather than assumed.
The five-year trend behind that single year is not on the parent page, and it comes with a caveat worth stating plainly. tutor2u's own analysis of the official Eduqas data puts the 2022 A* boundary at 212 of 300 (71% of the maximum) against 2026's 222 (74%) — a rise of three percentage points over four series. Only the 2026 row has been checked against Eduqas's own primary document for this page; the 2022 figure, and the years between, rest on tutor2u's aggregation rather than this session's own verification against each year's Eduqas PDF, and should be read as a third-party figure rather than an Eduqas one.
A past paper or a mark scheme carries a code the qualification-level entry codes do not: A410QS covers the whole A-level, but each individual paper is printed under its own component code. Eduqas's own grade-points document names all three: A410U10 for Component 1 (Physical and Inorganic Chemistry), A410U20 for Component 2 (Organic Chemistry and Analysis), and A410U30 for Component 3 (Chemistry in Practice). The AS qualification's two components carry the equivalent B410U10 and B410U20. A past-paper archive going back to June 2016 for the AS components and June 2017 for the A-level confirms the same six codes are printed on the papers themselves, not just in this one grade-points document.
Eduqas's A-level specification sets two rules for a candidate resitting Chemistry. The first is about the written papers: “Candidates must resit all examination components in the same series” — a student cannot bank Component 1 from one series and sit Components 2 and 3 in a later one. The second is about the Practical Endorsement: “The endorsement grade for NEA may be carried forward for the life of the specification, even if it was awarded by a different awarding body” — so a Pass earned on, say, an AQA or OCR practical endorsement can stand for an Eduqas A-level entry, unless the candidate chooses to resit it.
Both rules were themselves the subject of a specification amendment, per Eduqas's own summary of changes: the “Making entries” section “has been amended to clarify resit rules and carry forward of NEA endorsement grade” in Version 2 of the specification, dated January 2019. The document does not print a more precise date within that version, so this page does not claim one.
