OCR examines A-Level Further Mathematics through two separately-accredited specifications: Further Mathematics A (H245, QN 603/1325/0) and Further Mathematics B, known as MEI (H645, QN 603/1364/X) — both verified live on Ofqual's register on 9 September 2026. Neither is a variant of the other. Under H245, a student's overall assessment-objective balance depends on which two optional papers their school enters them for, a mechanic no competing guide states.

The AO2/AO3 balance that changes with which two H245 papers you sit

H245's own paper structure looks simple on paper: two mandatory Pure Core papers, Y540 and Y541, plus any two chosen from four optional papers — Statistics (Y542), Mechanics (Y543), Discrete Mathematics (Y544) and Additional Pure Mathematics (Y545). Every paper carries 75 marks, runs 90 minutes and is worth 25% of the A-level, so a student sits four papers in total. What the specification adds, and what no competitor page in today's search results states at all, is that the choice of which two options a school picks does not just change the topics — it changes the balance of skills the whole qualification actually tests.

OCR's H245 specification also states a rule that matters more than it first appears: where a school enters students for more than the required two optional papers, OCR uses whichever combination of four papers produces the best grade — and its own wording is explicit that this may not be the combination with the highest number of raw marks. A student who scores more raw marks across one pair of papers can still be awarded on a different, lower-scoring pair, if that pair converts to a better grade.

Mechanics is the single most AO3-weighted paper on the whole H245 specification — AO3 (problem-solving and modelling) outweighs AO2 (mathematical reasoning) by more than two to one. Additional Pure Mathematics runs the other way: it is the most AO2-weighted paper, with AO2 outnumbering AO3 by roughly the same margin. The other four papers — both Pure Core papers, Statistics and Discrete Mathematics — sit in the middle, with AO2 and AO3 essentially equal.

Because AO1 barely moves between papers, the overall A-level's assessment-objective profile is set almost entirely by which two optional papers a school teaches. OCR's own specification publishes the resulting split by option pair, and it is a wider spread than the per-paper table suggests:

Two students on the identical H245 specification, examined identically on both Pure Core papers, can sit meaningfully different assessment-objective balances purely because of which two optional papers their school chose for the cohort. A Statistics-and-Mechanics or Mechanics-and-Discrete cohort is marked on the most AO3-heavy version of the qualification OCR offers; a Statistics-and-Additional-Pure or Discrete-and-Additional-Pure cohort sits the most AO2-heavy version. Nothing in this table, or the choice it implies, is stated on any of the pages currently ranking for this search.

One further point is worth recording precisely, because it is a document quirk rather than a rule. H245's own specification footnotes the best-grade calculation with the instruction "for details of how their grade will be awarded, see Section 3g" — but Section 3g of the same document is titled Retaking the qualification, and covers only resit mechanics. The actual grade-calculation method quoted above sits at Section 3j, Calculating qualification results. This page states the rule that is actually at 3j; OCR's own internal cross-reference to 3g does not resolve to it.

What is actually inside each H245 optional paper?

Beyond the AO tables, the substance of each optional paper is rarely set out in full. OCR's own specification lists numbered content headings for each, and the fourth option in particular carries content most parents researching "Further Maths" have never been told is on the syllabus.

Statistics (Y542) covers nine topics: Probability; Discrete Random Variables; Continuous Random Variables; Linear Combinations of Random Variables; Hypothesis Tests and Confidence Intervals; Chi-squared Tests; Non-parametric Tests; Correlation; and Linear Regression.

Mechanics (Y543) covers six: Dimensional Analysis; Work, Energy and Power; Impulse and Momentum; Centre of Mass; Motion in a Circle; and Further Dynamics and Kinematics.

Discrete Mathematics (Y544) covers eight: Mathematical Preliminaries; Graphs and Networks; Algorithms; Network Algorithms; Decision Making in Project Management; Graphical Linear Programming; The Simplex Algorithm; and Game Theory.

Additional Pure Mathematics (Y545) covers six: Sequences and Series; Number Theory; Groups; Further Vectors; Surfaces and Partial Differentiation; and Further Calculus. Number Theory and Groups are university-adjacent pure mathematics content — congruences and finite and infinite groups sit well beyond anything a GCSE or plain A-level Maths syllabus touches, and none of the five pages ranking for this search names either topic.

H645 (MEI): Route A, B and C, and why raw marks are not the final marks

H645 does not offer free choice of optional papers at all. It requires a student to follow one of three named routes, each built from a mandatory Core Pure paper (Y420) plus a fixed combination of Major and Minor options:

The assessment structure carries a mechanic H245 does not have at all: raw marks are converted to scaled marks before they are added together. Core Pure is marked out of 144 raw marks and scaled up to 180, a 2 hour 40 minute paper worth 50% of the qualification. A Major option is marked out of 120 raw marks, scaled to the same 120, over 2 hours 15 minutes, worth 33⅓%. A Minor option is marked out of 60 raw marks, scaled to the same 60, over 1 hour 15 minutes (1 hour 45 minutes for the Y436 minor specifically) worth 16⅔%. Only Core Pure's raw and scaled totals actually differ — the Major and Minor options keep the same figure on both sides of the conversion.

H645's own specification adds a co-teaching footnote that H245 has no equivalent of: one third of Core Pure's content, and one half of the content of each Major option, can be co-taught alongside the separate AS Further Mathematics B (MEI) qualification. The overlapping content is labelled "(a)" throughout the specification's option sections.

The grade-calculation rule mirrors H245's in intent but works on scaled, not raw, marks: OCR adds together the scaled marks from Core Pure, the Major (if any) and the Minor or Minors, and — exactly as on H245 — where a student sits more papers than required, whichever combination produces the best grade is used, which OCR's specification again states explicitly may not be the combination with the highest number of raw marks.

H645's major and minor options, and how a Minor is built from its Major

Every H645 paper carries a fixed 50% AO1 weighting — a flatter pattern than H245, where AO1 varies slightly, 37–38 out of 75, by paper. The AO2/AO3 split is where H645's papers actually differ from each other, and it falls into two clear families:

The remaining three minors carry the same 30/20 or 20/30 AO2/AO3 split as their nearest relative even though OCR's specification does not publish a mark-range table for them individually: Modelling with Algorithms takes Statistics Minor's 20/30 split; Numerical Methods and Extra Pure both take the 30/20 split shared with Core Pure. Mechanics-flavoured papers are the AO3-heavy family on H645; everything else sits at 20/30 or 30/20.

OCR's specification states the minor-major relationship directly rather than leaving it implied: Mechanics Minor's content is, word for word, the shared "(a)" subset of Mechanics Major's content, and a learner may not enter for both in the same examination series. OCR's own support-site FAQ confirms the same structure applies to Statistics — Mechanics Minor has the same content as Mechanics a, Mechanics Major has the same content as Mechanics a and Mechanics b combined, and this is also true for Statistics. A Route C student sitting Mechanics Minor and a Route A student sitting Mechanics Major are not, in that sense, doing different subjects — the Minor is a strict subset of the Major.

H645 offers six minor options in total: Mechanics Minor, Statistics Minor, Modelling with Algorithms, Numerical Methods, Extra Pure and Further Pure with Technology. Extra Pure (Y435) has no equivalent anywhere on H245: it covers eigenvectors and eigenvalues, first and second order recurrence relations, finite and infinite groups, and functions of two variables. The "finite and infinite groups" content partially overlaps H245's own Additional Pure Mathematics "Groups" topic above, but the two are examined completely separately, under different specifications with different paper codes — a student cannot use one to prepare for the other.

Further Pure with Technology (Y436) is being withdrawn. Its final first-teach date is September 2026, its final assessment opportunity is Summer 2028, and OCR states there is no resit opportunity after that series — a fact still current in the live Version 2.1 (March 2026) edition of the H645 specification, so it is not a stale figure carried over from an earlier printing. Y436 is also the only H645 or H245 paper set at 1 hour 45 minutes rather than the standard Minor length.

Both routes at AS level

Both OCR Further Maths routes also exist as standalone AS qualifications, and the two behave differently from each other in one respect that matters for option choice:

The figures look identical, but the freedom behind them is not. H645's A-level Route A/B/C structure and its prohibited pairings apply only to the full A-level. At AS level, H635 places no combination restriction at all: any two of Mechanics a, Statistics a, Modelling with Algorithms and Numerical Methods may be freely paired, confirmed by OCR's own H635 assessment-overview section, which states no prohibited combination anywhere. H235's AS structure keeps the same any-two-of-four freedom as its own A-level.

A contradiction inside OCR's own live sources: is an AS H235 paper 70 minutes or 75?

OCR's own currently live H235 specification states the duration of the mandatory Pure Core paper (Y531) and its optional papers plainly: "Pure Core (Y531) 60 marks 75 minutes written paper 33⅓% of total AS Level" — and the same 75-minute figure repeats for every optional paper on that specification.

OCR's own currently live support-site FAQ, at a URL still indexed and still ranking for this exact search, states the opposite for the same three papers: "For AS Level all students sit three exams: 1 x pure core, 70 minutes. 2 x optional content, 70 minutes each." Both documents are on ocr.org.uk-family domains. Both are live today. Neither has been withdrawn or superseded by the other.

This is not a blanket error running through every figure on the FAQ page. The same article correctly states H245's A-level papers at "1.5 hours each" — 90 minutes, matching the spec exactly — and correctly states H635's AS papers at "75 minutes", also matching that spec. The 70-minute figure is confined specifically to the H235 AS row. The FAQ article's own byline reads "Cambridge OCR Customer Support, 6 years ago Updated", against a current specification edition dated Version 2, October 2025 — the FAQ has not kept pace with the spec it summarises.

This page states both figures and names the document each comes from, rather than silently picking one. A family relying on the FAQ for AS exam-day timing would be working from a figure OCR's own current specification does not support.

Control check: does ocr.org.uk actually serve the content it claims to?

Before citing any ocr.org.uk page, it is worth confirming the domain actually serves distinct content per URL rather than one generic template. A deliberately invented qualification path, built on the same /qualifications/as-and-a-level/ URL shape as the two real Further Maths hub pages, returned HTTP 200 — not a 404 — at 48,185 bytes, with a generic title and H1 both reading "Qualification details". The two real pages, fetched in the same session for direct comparison, returned 62,007 bytes (titled "AS and A Level - Further Mathematics A - H235, H245") and 62,833 bytes (titled "AS and A Level - Further Mathematics B (MEI) - H635, H645") — each carrying the correct qualification name in its own title and heading.

A separate research pass run against an entirely different invented OCR Biology URL, for an unrelated page in the same batch, recorded the identical 48,185-byte shell with the identical "Qualification details" title. Two unrelated invented paths on the same domain producing byte-for-byte the same response is strong evidence this is one static fallback served for any non-existent /qualifications/as-and-a-level/ path, rather than a per-path render — which means a 200 status code from ocr.org.uk alone is not proof a page exists; the content still has to be checked.

Editions, availability, language and the 2017 decoupling

Both QANs cited on this page were verified directly on Ofqual's own register — not taken from OCR's specification wording alone. H245's entry (603/1325/0) and H645's entry (603/1364/X) both show a status of "Available to learners" and national availability of "England, Northern Ireland, International", with availability in Northern Ireland confirmed separately as "Yes" for both. Wales is not listed for either OCR route.

The two specifications themselves are currently at different editions: H245 is Version 2 (October 2025); H645 is Version 2.1 (March 2026), the more recently revised of the two, and both are the exact files currently linked from each route's own qualification hub page. Both specifications carry identical section 3d wording on national availability — the qualification "is available in England," with Wales and Northern Ireland centres directed to check the Qualifications in Wales Portal or the Northern Ireland Department of Education's own list — and identical section 3e wording on language: the qualification and all assessment materials are available in English only, and all candidate work must be in English.

Both routes reformed together, not alongside the sciences. Further Mathematics sits in gov.uk's third AS/A-level reform wave, taught from September 2017, with first AS results in Summer 2018 and first reformed A-level results in Summer 2019 — two years after Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which reformed from September 2015. Ofqual's register corroborates this independently, with H245's operational start date recorded as 31 August 2017 (regulation start 6 April 2017) and H645's as 1 September 2017 (regulation start 24 April 2017).

Does OCR examine A-Level Further Maths through one specification or two?

Two, and they are entirely separate, separately-accredited qualifications rather than variants of one syllabus. Further Mathematics A carries Ofqual qualification number 603/1325/0 for the A-level (H245) and 603/1329/8 for the AS (H235). Further Mathematics B, known as MEI, carries 603/1364/X for the A-level (H645) and 603/1390/0 for the AS (H635). Both A-level QANs were verified live on Ofqual's own register on 9 September 2026, independently of OCR's own specification wording, and both show a status of Available to learners. A school teaches one route, not both, and a student who changes school during the sixth form may find they have changed route entirely.

What is the compulsory and optional paper structure of H245, Further Mathematics A?

H245 has two mandatory Pure Core papers, Y540 and Y541, plus any two chosen from four optional papers: Statistics (Y542), Mechanics (Y543), Discrete Mathematics (Y544) and Additional Pure Mathematics (Y545). H645 requires one of three named routes rather than free paper choice. Route A is the mandatory Core Pure paper plus Mechanics Major plus one further minor option that is not Mechanics Minor. Route B is Core Pure plus Statistics Major plus one minor that is not Statistics Minor. Route C is Core Pure plus three minor options, with no major paper at all. Learners may not enter for Mechanics Major and Mechanics Minor together, Statistics Major and Statistics Minor together, or Mechanics Major and Statistics Major together, in the same examination series -- OCR's specification names each restriction directly.

Why do OCR's own sources disagree on the length of the AS Further Maths A papers?

OCR's own currently live H235 specification states each AS paper -- Pure Core (Y531) and the two chosen optional papers -- is 75 minutes long. OCR's own currently live support-site FAQ states the same three papers are 70 minutes long. Both documents sit on ocr.org.uk-family domains and both are live today. It is not a blanket route-wide error: the same FAQ correctly states H245's A-level papers at 1.5 hours each, matching the spec's 90 minutes, and correctly states H635's AS papers at 75 minutes, also matching that spec. The 70-minute figure is confined to the H235 AS row of an FAQ article whose own byline shows it has not been substantively updated in roughly six years.

Is any OCR Further Maths option being withdrawn?

Yes. OCR is withdrawing the Further Pure with Technology minor option, Y436, from H645 (Further Mathematics B, MEI). The final first-teach date is September 2026, the final assessment opportunity is Summer 2028, and OCR states there is no resit opportunity after that series. This is confirmed as still current in the live Version 2.1 (March 2026) edition of the H645 specification, so it is not a stale figure carried over from an earlier edition. Y436 has no equivalent minor option, or withdrawal, on the H245 route -- it is exclusive to H645.

Is OCR A-Level Further Maths available outside England?

Both OCR routes state, in identical specification wording, that the qualification is available in England, and that centres in Wales or Northern Ireland should check the Qualifications in Wales Portal or the Northern Ireland Department of Education's own list rather than assume availability. Ofqual's own register goes further and states directly that both H245 and H645 show national availability of England, Northern Ireland and International, with availability in Northern Ireland confirmed as Yes for both. Both specifications also state, in identical wording, that all assessment materials are English only and all candidate work must be in English.

When did A-level Further Maths decouple from AS Further Maths, and is that the same date as the sciences?

Further Mathematics decoupled in the third reform wave, taught from September 2017, with the first AS results in Summer 2018 and the first reformed A-level results in Summer 2019, according to gov.uk's own AS and A-level reform timetable. That is not the sciences' date -- Biology, Chemistry and Physics decoupled two years earlier, from September 2015, in the same gov.uk table. Ofqual's own register corroborates the Further Maths date independently: both OCR routes show an operational start date in 2017, H245 on 31 August 2017 and H645 on 1 September 2017.
