How much of J560 tests technique versus reasoning? The AO weightings by tier
Every OCR GCSE Maths paper is marked against three assessment objectives, and J560 weights them differently depending on tier. OCR’s own specification sets Foundation tier at AO1 (use and apply standard techniques) 50%, AO2 (reason, interpret and communicate mathematically) 25% and AO3 (solve problems within mathematics and in other contexts) 25%. Higher tier shifts the balance toward reasoning and problem-solving: AO1 40%, AO2 30%, AO3 30%. These weightings are not OCR’s own choice, though: Ofqual sets them as a subject-level condition, and AQA’s own published scheme of assessment confirms they are “the same across all GCSE Mathematics specifications and all exam boards” — so this is one part of a GCSE Maths course that no exam board sets independently and no parent can shop between boards to change.
Because each tier sits three 100-mark papers, that percentage split translates directly into marks. The table below sets out the AO mark allocation per paper and across the full 300-mark qualification.

The practical consequence: a Foundation-tier student sits a paper where half the marks reward correctly applying a known method, while a Higher-tier student sits a paper where 60% of marks reward reasoning and problem-solving rather than technique alone. A revision plan that spends equal time on “learn the method” and “apply it to an unfamiliar problem” fits Higher tier; a Foundation-tier plan can weight more heavily toward securing technique, since that is literally half the marks on offer. What score did J560 need for each grade in June 2025?
OCR published its June 2025 grade boundaries for J560 as raw marks out of 300 for each tier’s overall grade. The table below reproduces the overall (three-paper) boundaries exactly as OCR published them.

Read side by side, the two columns show something the boundaries alone do not announce: a grade 4 means a very different proportion of the paper on each tier. On Higher tier, the June 2025 grade 4 boundary was 47 out of 300 — 47 ÷ 300 = 15.7% of the available marks. On Foundation tier, the same grade 4 boundary was 134 out of 300 — 134 ÷ 300 = 44.7% of the available marks. That is a 29.0 percentage-point gap (44.7% − 15.7% = 29.0), and it does not appear on OCR’s own boundaries document, which lists only the raw marks.
That gap is not evidence that Higher tier is “easier” to pass at grade 4 — it reflects the fact that Foundation and Higher are scaled against different candidate populations sitting different papers, not one shared mark scale. A Higher-tier student answering only 15.7% of available marks correctly is doing so on questions written for the stronger half of the cohort; a Foundation-tier student needs 44.7% because that paper is calibrated for a different range of ability. The figure is useful for one thing specifically: it shows why a tutor cannot give generic advice such as “aim for X% of the paper” across tiers — the target percentage for the same grade differs by nearly 30 points depending which tier a student sits.

The three layers behind J560’s content list — and the four formulae your child must actually memorise
OCR structures J560’s content list in three columns, not one. Each numbered content reference — such as 1.01a, “Four rules” — carries an Initial learning column that applies to every candidate, a Foundation tier learners should also be able to column, and a Higher tier learners should additionally be able to column. Foundation tier is assessed on Initial learning plus the Foundation addition; Higher tier is assessed on Initial learning plus the Higher addition. Neither tier is assessed on the whole document — a Higher-tier student is not tested on the Foundation-only addition, and vice versa.
The specification is also explicit about what a J560 candidate must recall from memory, and the list is short. Under specification section 6.02d, OCR states plainly that “the assessment for this specification will not include a formula sheet,” and that beyond four named formula groups, “all other formulae required will be given in the assessment.” The four a J560 candidate has to know without being given them are: the circumference and area of a circle, Pythagoras’ theorem, the three trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent), and the quadratic formula. Everything else — compound interest, kinematics formulae, the volume of a sphere or cone, and so on — is supplied within the assessment itself, so time spent memorising those is time better spent on technique.
This is a narrower memorisation list than many revision resources imply, and it is J560-specific: it comes from OCR’s own specification document rather than the general policy on formulae provision that applies more broadly across GCSE Maths, which our GCSE Maths tutoring page already covers.
OCR also states a specific teaching-time figure for J560: total qualification time of 140 hours, with guided learning time of 120 to 140 hours. That is the planning figure a school builds its own scheme of work around, and it is a useful anchor for a tutor too — not as a target to replicate outside school, but as a sense check for how much of the three-column content list (Initial learning, Foundation addition, Higher addition) a student has realistically covered by any given point in Year 10 or Year 11, and how much still needs to be built into a tutoring programme before the June papers.
OCR’s Check In tests: a staged diagnostic route built for J560, not generic maths
Alongside the specification itself, OCR publishes a set of diagnostic assessments for J560 called Check In tests, listed on the qualification’s own planning-and-teaching page. There are five named layers: Check In tests for initial learning, Check In tests for Foundation, Check In tests for Higher, and Section Check In tests for both Foundation and Higher. Each layer maps directly onto the three-column content structure described above — a Check In test for initial learning covers content every candidate is assessed on; a Foundation or Higher Check In test covers the tier-specific addition.
These are not past papers and not a public revision resource. OCR gates the full materials behind Teach Cambridge, its platform for registered teachers, so a parent or tutor cannot open a Check In test directly from OCR’s public website — only a school with a Teach Cambridge login can. What the public page confirms, honestly, is that the tests exist, how many layers there are, and what each is named; it does not hand over the content itself.
In practice this means a J560 tutor’s value is not “I have the Check In tests” — usually a school does, not a private tutor — but knowing that this staged initial-learning/Foundation/Higher diagnostic structure exists at all, and building lesson-by-lesson practice that mirrors it, topic reference by topic reference, rather than teaching Foundation and Higher as if they were unrelated syllabuses.

Why your child’s OCR maths papers might now say ‘Cambridge OCR’
As of September 2025, OCR’s name is Cambridge OCR — a rebrand stated on the cover of J560’s own current specification document, not a separate announcement families might have missed. Students who sat a J560 paper in the summer 2025 series received a Cambridge OCR-branded certificate, and OCR’s specification confirms this “will be the same for all future exam series.” The qualification itself is unchanged: same specification code J560, same qualification number 601/4606/0, same paper structure, same grade-boundary process — only the name on the certificate and the branding on OCR’s materials has changed.
For a family checking whether “Cambridge OCR” on a school letter or an exam certificate means their child has been entered for a different qualification, the answer is straightforwardly no. It is the same specification, the same board, under a new name. Where this page cites “OCR” throughout, it is describing exactly the organisation now branded Cambridge OCR — the two names refer to one and the same awarding body across the 2025 rebrand.
Independent schools and state schools that have already updated their own materials to “Cambridge OCR” are simply following the awarding body’s own naming change; schools that still say “OCR” have not fallen behind — the specification code, J560, and everything it assesses, is identical either way. These are the specific J560 boundaries for that series; OCR resets boundaries at every exam series, so a later series’ figures will differ and should be checked directly against OCR’s published grade boundaries document for that series.
Is a Higher-tier grade 4 easier to achieve than a Foundation-tier grade 4?
No — the lower percentage needed on Higher tier (47 of 300 marks, 15.7%, against 134 of 300, 44.7%, on Foundation) reflects the fact that Foundation and Higher are different papers calibrated for different candidate populations, not one shared scale.
