Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppAQA's own specification describes the two qualifications in strong terms: “Both AS and A-level courses provide strong stand-alone qualifications that are fully co-teachable so that you can choose the approach that best suits your, and your students', needs.” Each is separately accredited by Ofqual, with its own qualification accreditation number: 601/4846/9 for the AS, 601/4640/0 for the A-level. On paper, they are two distinct qualifications, not one course split in half.
In practice, what determines whether a strong AS result adds anything is not accreditation but discounting. AQA's own entry-code table lists the same national discount code, 5030, against both 7701 and 7702, and explains what that means: “Every specification is given a national discount (classification) code by the Department for Education (DfE), which indicates its subject area. If a student takes two specifications with the same discount code, Further and Higher Education providers are likely to take the view that they have only achieved one of the two qualifications.”
DfE's own discounting guidance spells out exactly what that means for a school's performance-table figures: “Where a student has entered qualifications of different sizes and passed the larger qualification, DfE counts the larger qualification. The smaller qualification is not counted (even if the larger qualification has less points). For example, where a student has gained an AS studying towards an A level in the same subject, only the A level result will count.” DfE does not treat this as an unusual edge case either: “There are a number of educational reasons why a student might undertake several qualifications which discount each other. A common one is to recognise their progression through a course of study. For example, taking an AS level before progressing to an A level in the same subject.”
None of this means AS and A-level English Language are unrelated courses built from scratch. AQA is explicit that “there is overlapping content in the AS and A-level English Language specifications. This helps you teach the AS and A-level together.” The point is narrower: whatever a student's AS grade turns out to be, DfE's own performance-measure rules mean it is the A-level result that counts once a student passes it, not an addition on top.
AS English Language 7701 is assessed across two written papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes long and worth 70 marks, together making up a total of 140 marks — a smaller, self-contained total, not a fraction of the A-level's own scheme. AQA's own specification scales both AS papers at x1, so the raw mark and the scaled mark are the same number; the A-level's own papers and coursework are scaled differently, which our A-level English Language page sets out in full.
The clearest structural difference is what AS does not include. AQA's own contents page lists “6 Non-exam assessment administration (A-level only)” — the Language in Action coursework component that features heavily in the full A-level appears nowhere in the AS specification. A student entered for AS alone sits two exam papers and nothing else; there is no NEA folder to complete, mark or moderate.

On Paper 1, AS covers Textual Variations and Representations; the full A-level adds a whole further section, Children's Language Development, that does not appear anywhere in AS's own Paper 1 content. A student who sits AS only will not have studied that section at all — it is picked up, for those continuing, once the course moves into A-level-only territory.
Paper 2 shows the same pattern. AS's own heading is simply “Language diversity,” covering language variation and writing skills; the A-level heading becomes “Language diversity and change,” adding the historical dimension of language change, and the A-level specification adds a further, separate strand — Language Discourses — that AS does not assess in any form.
None of this should be read as AS and A-level being unconnected. AQA's own specification is explicit that “there is overlapping content in the AS and A-level English Language specifications,” which is precisely why a school can teach a mixed Year 12 class working towards either qualification from the same starting point. The sections named above are the genuine, published exceptions to that overlap, not a general description of the whole course.
AS English Language has its own two-component Assessment Objective table, and it is not simply a scaled-down version of the A-level's own three-component weightings, which our board page sets out in full. The AS table splits weighting across Paper 1 and Paper 2 unevenly by objective, not evenly:

The detail that matters for revision planning: Paper 1 carries no AO2 or AO5 marks at all. Every mark for AO2 — at 29% the single largest weighting anywhere in the AS qualification — and every mark for AO5 sits entirely in Paper 2, alongside AO1's smaller share. A student who prepares only with Paper 1's own objectives in mind is missing the two AOs that carry nearly half of Paper 2's own marks.

Out of the 140-mark total, the June 2026 boundaries were A 102, B 89, C 77, D 65 and E 53. A year earlier, in June 2025, the same five boundaries stood at A 100, B 89, C 78, D 67 and E 56.

Read year-on-year, the movement is mixed rather than a uniform tightening or loosening. The A boundary rose two marks, from 100 to 102, and B held exactly still at 89 — both got marginally harder or stayed level. C, D and E each fell instead, by one, two and three marks respectively — each of those got marginally easier. A family comparing a Year 12 AS result against the A-level's own boundaries, published separately on our board page, is comparing two different mark scales entirely; the numbers are not interchangeable even where a letter grade happens to match.
AQA's own June 2026 AS exam-results statistics record 421 entries for standalone AS English Language (7701), against 9,305 entries for the full A-level (7702) in the same series. Both figures are AQA's own counts for AQA's own specifications specifically — not a national total across every awarding body, and not a figure covering any of AQA's other English qualifications, such as the combined Language and Literature specification.
What that scale means for any individual school's own decision is not something the entry count itself can answer — it says how many students AQA registered for standalone AS against how many sat the full course, nothing about whether any particular school should follow either path. Asking the school directly which route it has chosen remains the only reliable way to know.
