Is Year 12 Edexcel Physics the AS Qualification, or the First Year of the Full A-Level?

Edexcel does not treat Year 12 Physics as the first half of a two-year course examined only once at the end. AS Physics carries its own specification code, 8PH0, and its own formal title, the Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced Subsidiary GCE in Physics -- a different document from the full A-Level's own specification, which covers 9PH0, the Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Physics. A school can enter a student for AS Physics as a genuinely separate, externally certificated qualification, sat and graded independently of whether that student ever goes on to sit the full A-Level. Does AS Physics (8PH0) Carry the Science Practical Endorsement?

A full-text search of Pearson's own AS Physics specification, from its qualification overview through to its closing appendix, finds zero occurrences of the word "endorsement" anywhere in the document. Run the same search against the full A-Level's own specification for 9PH0 and the term appears repeatedly, because the A-Level carries its own separately graded Science Practical Endorsement, reported alongside -- but never counted into -- the written-paper grade. AS Physics has no equivalent component. Nothing about AS practical work is reported separately on a student's certificate, because nothing about AS practical work is assessed separately from the two written papers in the first place.

What the AS specification prescribes instead is narrower in scope, not absent. It includes 8 core practical activities, and Pearson states plainly that "questions in written examination papers will aim to assess the knowledge and understanding that students will gain while carrying out practical activities, in the context of the 8 core practical activities, as well as in novel practical scenarios." Practical competence is examined only indirectly, through written questions on the two AS papers -- there is no separate practical test, no pass/fail component, and nothing recorded on an AS certificate beyond the single graded written result. The full A-Level's specification, covering the same range of practical skills over two years of teaching rather than one, specifies double the number of core practicals, 16, precisely because its separately graded Endorsement requires direct assessed evidence of practical competence that the AS qualification's written-only design was never built to provide.

Why Do AS and A-Level Physics Share the Same DfE Discount Code?

Neither the specification comparison above nor a straight syllabus reading explains why a school might hesitate to enter a student for AS Physics at all -- the reason is administrative, and it sits in Pearson's own discount-code rules rather than in the physics content. The AS specification lists the qualification's code for the 16-18 performance table plainly: "For 16-18 performance table: 1210." That is the same code Pearson assigns to the full A-Level. Pearson's own administration section spells out what sharing a code actually means for a school: "Centres should be aware that students who enter for more than one GCE qualification with the same discount code will have only one of the grades they achieve counted for the purpose of the School and College Performance Tables -- normally the better grade."

That is not only Pearson's own internal rule -- it is confirmed independently. DfE's own current 16-to-19 qualifications discount codes and point scores data, the published dataset school performance-table calculations are built from, lists code 1210 against both the AS-titled and the full-titled Pearson Edexcel Physics entries for the 2027 performance tables. In practice, that means a school gains no additional performance-table credit for a separate AS Physics grade once the same student's full A-Level grade exists. The AS result still stands as the student's own externally graded qualification -- a real result for a UCAS form if a student stops at AS -- it simply is not counted a second time in the school's own published results.

Is AS Physics Graded the Same Way as the Full A-Level?

No, and the difference is a different grading architecture, not a smaller version of the same one. Pearson's AS Physics specification states, in its own Awarding and reporting section: "This qualification will be graded and certificated on a five-grade scale from A to E using the total subject mark. Individual papers are not graded." The full A-Level's own Awarding and reporting section states something structurally different: "This qualification will be graded and certificated on a six-grade scale from A* to E using the total subject mark." AS Physics simply has no A* available at all -- a genuine five-grade scale, not a six-grade scale with the top grade temporarily withheld until Year 13. A student aiming for the highest available AS result is aiming for an A, and that is the ceiling of the qualification, not a staging post on the way to something higher.

When Is Edexcel AS Physics 8PH0 Actually Sat in Summer 2027?

Pearson's own Summer 2027 GCE timetable, the document itself titled on its cover "Pearson Edexcel GCE Summer 2027 Examination Timetable FINAL" -- not a provisional draft -- dates AS Physics separately from the full A-Level. 8PH0/01, Core Physics I, sits Wednesday 12 May 2027; 8PH0/02, Core Physics II, sits Tuesday 18 May 2027. The full A-Level's three papers sit later in the series and across three separate dates rather than two -- Friday 21 May, Thursday 27 May and Tuesday 8 June 2027. A family planning revision around a Year 12 AS entry is therefore planning around a shorter, earlier exam window than a family building toward the full two-year award, and the two calendars do not overlap in the way a single combined qualification might suggest.
