For a Year 13 student, the practical endorsement is finalised through two centre-level steps that are specific to how Pearson administers it. First, the school's Head Teacher signs a declaration form confirming that the required practical activities meeting the endorsement's requirements have been completed. Second, the school enters a Pass (P) or Not Classified (NC) outcome for each student on Edexcel Online (EOL), Pearson's own centre portal, using its "coursework marks" option once qualification entries have been made. Pearson's own words: "A 'Pass' (P) or 'Not Classified' (NC) outcome for each student must also be submitted on Edexcel Online (EOL) by 15 May. This can be done via the 'coursework marks' option in Edexcel Online once entries for the qualification have been made."
Edexcel Online is the same portal a centre already uses to make the qualification entries themselves - Pearson's own wording ties the endorsement submission to entries "once made" - so this is not a separate system a school has to learn for one purpose only. It is a second use of infrastructure already in place for entering a Year 13 student for the written papers in the first place.
Both steps fall due on 15 May in the year of certification - the date that applies to this specification, sourced to Pearson, not a point Edexcel set itself apart from other awarding bodies on. Pearson is explicit that responsibility for meeting it sits with the centre: "Any failure by centres to provide the declaration will be treated as malpractice and/or maladministration." For a Year 13 student, the practical consequence is that the endorsement is completed and banked in Year 13 on an administrative timetable of its own, weeks before the written papers begin in June 2027. It is one of a small number of points across the two-year course where an administrative step, rather than the student's own exam performance, determines whether a result can be issued at all - which is consistent with why Pearson treats a missed declaration as seriously as it does. AS Biology A (Salters-Nuffield, 8BN0) and AS Biology B (8BI0) are separate, decoupled qualifications from the A-level codes 9BN0 and 9BI0, each with its own certification. Pearson designed the AS year-one content to overlap with the A-level's first year for teaching purposes only: "The topics for AS Biology are the same as those for the first year of A level, so that the two specifications are co-teachable."
Co-teachable is a statement about timetabling, not about assessment. Whatever AS result, if any, a school reported for a student in Year 12 sits on its own separate certificate and plays no part in the grade a Year 13 student is working towards now.
Since the 2015 decoupling, schools have followed one of two patterns with the standalone AS: some enter every Year 12 Biology student as a matter of course, others enter none and run the two years as a single linear course towards the A-level only. Both are common, and neither changes what a Year 13 student now needs to prepare for - the A-level papers set for Summer 2027 are the same either way.
