Home 11+ From overseas Boarding schools at 11
Boarding at 11 means joining Year 7 in September 2027 at a UK school that offers boarding places at that age. Of the 13 schools read on 4 October 2026, seven name a venue away from the school, among them Felsted and Haileybury. Wycombe Abbey requires all overseas candidates to attend assessment days in person, but encourages parents to contact its Admissions Department to discuss arrangements . A Child Student visa covers ages 4 to 17 at independent schools.

Which September 2027 dates had already passed by 4 October 2026?
By 4 October 2026 these dates serving September 2027 entry had gone: Reading School’s registration (17 May 2026) and test (15 and 16 July 2026) , Wycombe Abbey’s registration (1 June 2026) , Benenden’s Preview Day (19 September 2026) and Cheltenham Ladies’ College’s registration and exam form (21 September 2026) , plus the first of its three assessment dates (1 October 2026). The other two, 5 and 6 October 2026, were still ahead. Registration and assessment fall months apart, so they sit in separate tables: Wycombe Abbey’s registration for 2027 entry closed on 1 June 2026, yet its Assessment Day is 19 November 2026 and its pre-test deadline is 1 December 2026 . Each row names what the date is and the entry year it serves, with the school’s own words; unless a row says otherwise the entry is Year 7 (11+) in September 2027.

Dates a school gives as a month or a stage
These schools publish a month or a stage, not a day. The year is worked out from the school’s rule and the entry year, and the rule is printed beside each so it can be checked.
October 2026 · Downe House International candidates’ ISEB Common Pre-Test. Entry year: 11+ and 12+, September 2027.“For 11+ and 12+ candidates, assessment will take place one year prior to entry” “For international applications, we ask candidates to sit the test by the middle of October.” Our reading: the page names the month, not the year; October 2026 follows from “one year prior to entry” for September 2027 entry.
November 2026 · Woldingham Entrance assessments. Entry year: 11+, September 2027.“Detailed timeline for 2027 entry and 2029 deferred entry” “Entrance assessments take place in November the year before the student is due to join us.” Our reading: the timeline page is headed for 2027 entry, so the November before entry is November 2026.
November or December 2026, or January 2027 · St Mary’s School Ascot Entrance examination (the school’s two pages give different months). Entry year: 11+, September 2027.“All who are registered come to St Mary’s to sit their entrance examination in the November or December preceding the year of entry.” Admissions policy: “The timetable for these examinations is: November for 13+ candidates. November for 16+ candidates January for 11+ candidates” Our reading: the FAQ’s November or December before September 2027 entry is November or December 2026, and the policy’s January for 11+ is January 2027. Ask the school in writing which applies.
January 2027 · Oundle 11+ assessments. Entry year: 11+, September 2027.“Assessments usually take place in mid-January.” “Entry is by written examination in January before entry in September.” Our reading: mid-January before a September 2027 entry is January 2027.
January 2027 · The Oratory Assessment Day. Entry year: 11+, September 2027.“Pupils enter the school at 11+ through an Assessment Day held here in the January preceding entry.” Our reading: the January before September 2027 entry is January 2027.

Where does each school say a child abroad can sit the Year 7 assessment?
Each entry quotes the school’s own words, and each quotation links the page it comes from; a sentence from a school-wide or international-admissions page is not specific to Year 7 unless the entry says so. This is the list of schools whose pages were read on 4 October 2026, not every boarding school that takes pupils at 11. For London day schools see London independent schools from overseas ; the ISEB’s rules on where its Common Pre-Test can be sat abroad, and who approves the venue, are on the 11+ from overseas hub .
Schools that name a venue away from the school
Cheltenham Ladies’ College. “approximately 50 boarders and 25 day girls” join LC1 (Year 7). “Year 7 candidates are required to attend an Assessment Day” . On international testing: “Do you run international assessment centres? In addition to UK testing, we offer an assessment day at a test centre in Hong Kong on a fixed date in October - please contact us for more information about this.”
Felsted. The school says it welcomes “applications from overseas full boarders from Year 7” and that “Our tests can be taken remotely at the pupil’s current school, a lawyer’s office or British Council office. They can also be taken at an educational agent or consultant’s office if this is a service they provide.” Once the child is registered the family sends the name and email address of “your nominated invigilator” . “All pupils take entry testing in English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.”
Haileybury. “Around 65 pupils join Haileybury each year in Lower School 1 (Year 7).” “We offer several options for international applicants who are not able to travel to the UK to sit the entrance examinations in person at Haileybury.” “From the comfort of their own home, international pupils can be invigilated online by us via a Zoom meeting.” Or “within a seven-day window set by the School, international applicants may also be permitted to sit at the offices of the British Council or at a lawyer’s office.” The page adds: “Please note that we do not permit our entrance exams to be taken at the applicant’s current school.”
Oundle. “Boarders join The Berrystead” , in Years 7 and 8. “Candidates must sit examinations at a British Council Office if travel to the UK is not feasible. We interview all candidates as part of the assessment process, either in person or online.” The 11+ page adds: “All overseas applicants follow the same entrance procedure and sit the same entrance papers as UK candidates.”
Roedean. For Year 7 entry the school says “Applicants based in the UK will be asked to sit their tests at Roedean. Those living overseas will sit their tests in their country of residence.” Its application page: “For applicants based overseas, tests may be taken at: • the applicant’s school • the nearest British Council offices • an Educational Agency” . “Applicants living overseas are recommended to follow the registration timelines as boarding places are limited.”
The Oratory. The school says “We attract a number of international pupils at 11+, 13+, and 16+ as full boarders each year” . Its pages differ, so both are quoted in full. International applications page: “All applicants will take an English/EAL test and we also request that pupils complete an online assessment (CAT). These entrance tests can be sat at a pupil’s current school or with an agent. The school will also request a Teams interview.” 11+ entry page: “Pupils enter the school at 11+ through an Assessment Day held here in the January preceding entry. The 11+ assessments are in the form of a Cognitive Ability Test (CAT), an English paper, a Maths paper and an observed group activity.” A family abroad should ask the admissions office in writing which applies.
Woldingham. “Our Year 7-11 boarders live in Marden House and Main House.” “International students sit our standard entrance assessments. These may be taken, with prior approval from the admissions team, at either the British Council offices, an accredited education recruitment agency or the student's current school.”
Schools whose pre-test can be sat abroad and whose process also includes an assessment day
Benenden. “Candidates for 11+ entry should be registered with us and placed on our provisional list by the end of UK Year 5.” Of the Preview Day: “If a candidate is unable to attend the Preview Day, the Admissions Team will make alternative arrangements for the interview and the creative writing assessment.” The pre-test: “Candidates will need to make arrangements to sit this test at their current school, or a recognised testing centre in the UK or overseas (eg local British Council Office).”
Downe House. “Following the 11+ and 12+ Assessment days, girls are asked to sit the ISEB Common Pre-Test at their current school or, for overseas pupils, at a local testing centre.” A family that cannot travel for the Assessment Day should ask in writing what can be arranged.
Wycombe Abbey. Stage 1 of the 11+ process: “The first stage is the online ISEB Common Pre-Test. Candidates will need to make arrangements to sit this test at their current school, a recognised test centre in the UK, or at local British Council Office, by November.” Stage 2: “The Assessment Day takes place at Wycombe Abbey in the November prior to the proposed year of entry (when your daughter is in Year 6). Please note that all candidates must come to Wycombe Abbey for assessment.” The school’s FAQ repeats the point: “Can we sit assessments overseas? Wycombe Abbey welcomes applications from families around the world, and we recognise that some overseas candidates may require alternative assessment arrangements. We require all overseas candidates to attend assessment days in person, but we encourage prospective parents to contact the Admissions Department directly to discuss assessment arrangements.” The 2027 dates list gives a different pre-test deadline, “1 December 2026 deadline” ; ask the admissions office in writing which applies.

Schools whose Year 7 wording describes a day or residential assessment
Bedales. “Age 11+ (Year 7) Day or boarding Progression from Bedales Prep or as an external candidate.” The 11+ assessment, from the admissions policy: “The assessment for entry at 11+ to Bedales Prep is residential, over two days (one night), in January of the year of entry. Alternatively, we also undertake individual assessment days.” Separately, the school’s admissions overview, which is not specific to Year 7, says: “We actively support families based overseas with flexible admissions arrangements and overseas assessments where needed.”
St Mary’s School Ascot. “The School accepts about 65 pupils each year, a small number of whom come from overseas.” The school’s FAQ says: “All who are registered come to St Mary’s to sit their entrance examination in the November or December preceding the year of entry.” The admissions policy gives a different month: “The timetable for these examinations is: November for 13+ candidates. November for 16+ candidates January for 11+ candidates” At 11+, “girls come to St Mary’s for a day in the December before the year of entry. They will sit examinations in English, Mathematics and a General Paper, for which no special preparation is required.” A family abroad should ask the school in writing which month applies and whether any other arrangement is possible.
What does a Child Student visa ask of an 11-year-old boarder?
GOV.UK: “You can apply for a Child Student visa if you’re between 4 and 17 years old and you want to study at an independent school in the UK.” The Immigration Rules put the route the same way: “The Child Student route is for a person aged between 4 and 17 who wants to study at an independent school in the UK, which is a student sponsor.” The conditions that bite hardest at 11, in the order a family meets them:
An unconditional offer and a CAS. “You must have an unconditional offer of a place on a course with a licensed Child Student sponsor.” “You need a CAS before you can apply for your visa.” The Rules add: “CS 7.1. The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies must have been issued by a student sponsor which is an independent school whose sponsor licence is still valid on the date on which the application is decided.”
The six-month window. For an application from outside the UK, gov.uk says “The earliest you can apply for a visa is 6 months before you start your course. You’ll usually get a decision within 3 weeks.” “You must apply for your visa within 6 months of receiving your CAS.” Our reading of the six-month rule: for a course starting in September 2027 the earliest application is March 2027. Haileybury lists “Acceptance deadline Monday 1 March 2027” , Benenden says places must be accepted “by Monday 1 March 2027” , and Cheltenham Ladies’ College lists “Accept March 2027” .
Documents and consent. gov.uk lists “a current passport or other valid travel documentation” , “a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your course provider” and “written consent from your parent or legal guardian for your study and living arrangements in the UK” . “You must have written consent from both parents (or one parent if they have sole responsibility) or legal guardian.” It must confirm consent to the child’s “visa application” , “travel to the UK” and “living arrangements and care in the UK” .
The border. “If you said in your application that you would be accompanied by an adult, they need to be with you when you arrive at the border.” “If you're not accompanied by an adult, the official at the border will check that you know where you're going and how you're getting there. They may ask you other questions too.”
A parent is not covered. “bring family members (‘dependants’) - if a parent wants to accompany you, they’ll need to apply for a Parent of a Child Student visa” .
Schools put the same rule in their own terms. Haileybury: “We have been licensed by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to sponsor international pupils for the purpose of full-time study at the School. Please note that we do not sponsor international pupils to attend as Day pupils.” Oundle: “All overseas pupils who do not hold a British/Irish passport or who do not have settled or pre-settled status in the UK need to apply for a Child Student visa before they start studying at Oundle.” DfE’s wording on who needs which status is covered in foreign national children and UK grammar schools .
Can a parent move to the UK for the first year of boarding?
A parent can accompany a child on a Child Student visa only on a separate visa. gov.uk on the Parent of a Child Student visa: “Your child must be aged between 4 and 11 when you apply, and be attending an independent school in the UK.” The applicant must also “be the only parent accompanying your child in the UK” , “have enough money to support yourself and your child in the UK” , “maintain your main home outside the UK” and “plan to leave the UK when your visa expires” . “The child’s other parent must live abroad, and cannot apply to join you in the UK.” The Child Student guidance sets a child-side condition: a parent or guardian “can only get this visa if either:” “you’re under 12 years old” or “you have a brother or sister who is under 12 years old and also has a Child Student visa” (the page is addressed to the child).

The length of stay meets the Year 7 birth-date range. “You can stay in the UK until your child’s visa expires or they turn 12, whichever happens first.” Reading School’s policy sets the range for September 2027 entry: “a date of birth between 01/09/2015 and 31/08/2016 inclusive” . Our reading of the two rules together: a child born in that range turns 12 between 1 September 2027 and 31 August 2028, so for a September 2027 entrant the parent’s stay ends within Year 7. gov.uk says what follows: “If your child is staying in education in the UK without you, you must make arrangements for their ongoing care. For example, if your child turns 12 and their visa is still valid, they may be able to start boarding at their current school, or live with other family members in the UK.” The which year group guide covers how a birth date maps to a year group.
Who may the child stay with outside term, and how old must a guardian be?
“You can board at school full-time or part-time. You must have a suitable place to live when you are not boarding. You can:” “live with your parent or legal guardian, if they have a Parent of a Child Student visa” , “live in the UK with someone who is a British citizen or settled in the UK” , or “leave the country in school holidays” . Of a person who is not the parent: “If you live in the UK with someone who is not your parent, they must be one of the following:” a foster carer, a close relative, or “a nominated guardian - you can only live with them for up to 27 days in a row” . “A nominated guardian must be at least 18 years old. They can be nominated by your parent, legal guardian or school.” The Immigration Rules add the status condition: CS 9.3 says “CS 9.3. If the applicant will be living with a nominated guardian, close relative, or private foster carer, that nominated guardian, close relative or foster carer must be: (a) a British citizen; or (b) settled in the UK.” CS 9A.1 gives the length as “(i) a nominated guardian (for a period of less than 28 continuous days) who is a British Citizen or settled in the UK” .
The visa application needs a letter from the guardian: “You must provide a letter from your nominated guardian. They must include in the letter: their name, current address and contact details” and “confirmation that they agree to care for you” . If the guardian is not yet known, the letter comes from the organisation that will arrange one. GOV.UK, documents you will need .
The schools set their own conditions on top. Of the 13 schools read, ten state a minimum age for a guardian in the pages read, and each gives 25, against gov.uk’s 18. Each school’s own wording:
For boarding at 13+, our guides cover the Child Student visa , educational guardians and video interviews in full.
How does state weekly boarding at Reading School differ?
Reading School is “a designated grammar school” with weekly boarding only: “Only weekly boarding is available.” Its Year 7 Boarding Admissions Policy for September 2027 says it admits “12 boarding students into Year 7 each year” ; “The Published Admissions Number (PAN) is 150.” The boarding test is fixed: “The entrance test will be held in July of Year 5 for boarding candidates.” For boarding places the policy says: “As a state school, boarding places are open to British citizens and anyone with a right of residence in the UK.” GOV.UK separately says state-funded school admission authorities “must not ask to see passports or other immigration information as a condition of admission” . A Child Student visa is not the route into Reading School: “They cannot lawfully, under their UK entry conditions, study at a state-funded school.” (the sentence is about “unaccompanied foreign national children and young people who are entering on a Child Student visa or Student visa” ). The Reading and Slough guide and the Reading School guide cover the school’s boarding detail.

What is open to a family that misses the 2027 date?
Four schools publish a late route: Cheltenham Ladies’ College: “If you have missed the application deadlines we are occasionally able to fast track an application, although we cannot guarantee that this will result in a place.” Felsted: “Due to high demand, please apply as early as possible to secure a place. However, places can become available at any time, so do please contact us to check on a chance place.” Roedean: “Whilst late applications may be considered, this will be based on availability.” Reading School’s boarding policy: “Late registrants and/or late CAF applicants will not be tested until after 1st March 2027 and will be treated in line with late school place applications.” For the state route after a move see the in-year admissions guide and the mid-cycle relocation guide .
The next cycle is September 2028 entry. For 2028 and beyond, Cheltenham Ladies’ College lists “Complete a Registration Form September 2027” and “Assessment October 2027” . Wycombe Abbey’s rule is “The registration deadline for 11+ and 13+ is 1 June in the calendar year prior to entry.” Applied to September 2028 entry, the calendar year before entry is 2027, so the deadline is 1 June 2027 (our arithmetic on the school’s rule).
