Overseas applications: can she sit the papers where she lives?

Section 13 of the North London Collegiate School (NLCS) Admissions Policy is headed “Overseas applications”, and the 11+ registration form has a box under the same heading, “Overseas applications”. The policy is the version linked from the school’s Policies page; its front page gives “Date of Authorisation March 2026” and “Date of Next Review March 2027”. The two texts are set side by side below.

On the point of Admissions Policy, section 13 11+ registration form
Where the papers goClause 13.1: “If travel to the UK is not possible, the School can arrange for 7+, 11+ or 16+ examination papers to be sent to the applicant’s current school, where the applicant must sit the exams under supervised exam conditions.”“Please note that your daughter will sit the entrance examination at North London Collegiate School unless arrangements have been made for an overseas examination.”
Which facility is namedClause 13.2: “If the applicant’s current school is unable to accommodate this an alternative and impartial facility such as a British Consulate can be used as a test centre.”“If you are applying from abroad and wish your daughter to sit the entrance examination at her current school, or the British Council, please tick below and provide the following additional information”
Who arranges it, and who is namedClause 13.2 continues: “This must be arranged by the candidate’s parents at their own expense and confirmed in writing with the School.”The tick box is labelled “Overseas Examination”, and the form asks for “Contact name and position of the person responsible for arranging exams” and “Email address of the person overseeing the exam”. The section ends with “Please check that your daughter's current school is in agreement to oversee the arangements.” (the form’s spelling).

The form’s Current School Details section says “If you cannot find your daughter's current school please tick this box and enter the details in the fields that will appear”. Among the examples the form gives of how the School will use the information on it is “we may ask for information about other schools to which you are applying because they may hold their entrance exam on the same day as ours;”

Policy 10.1 says “The entrance examination takes place in December.” and “Candidates sit papers set by the School in Mathematics and English”. The term-dates page lists “11+ entrance examination (holiday for Y7-Y13)” against “Thursday 3 December” under AUTUMN 2026. For how the test differs from one London school to the next, see which test each London school sets; the format of the NLCS papers is covered on our North London Collegiate School 11+ page.

Admission criteria: where will she live, and what permission does she need?

Clause 7.1 of the policy introduces its list with “candidates must meet the following criteria:”. The lines a family abroad meets first sit beside the form below.

On the point of Admissions Policy, clause 7.1 11+ registration form
Where she lives“Where a candidate’s family is not resident in the UK, an appropriate guardian has been arranged.”“This is a day school and has no boarding facilities; pupils will be expected to live with a parent in the locality.”
Her permission to live and study“Have the appropriate immigration permission to live in the United Kingdom and to study at this School. Parents must be able to provide evidence if applicable.”“Please note that the School is required to take steps to ascertain whether your daughter has permission to be in the UK and to study at the School.” It also asks “If your daughter is not a British or Irish citizen, does she hold another immigration category that permits her to study at the school?”
English“If English is not their first language, candidates must demonstrate a satisfactory level of spoken and written English in order to engage and participate fully in all aspects of School life”The Languages questions ask “Please select your daughter's first language” and “Please select all languages spoken at home”.

For the role of an education guardian in general, see our guide to educational guardians.

Under Immigration the form asks for a copy of a time restricted or temporary visa: “If your daughter has or will have a time restricted or temporary visa in any other immigration category (for example, as a dependent) please provide a copy of this when returning this form if you have it or as soon as you have it.” It adds “Please note that we reserve the right to:” and, as the second item, “to share information with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and the Home Office for the purposes of compliance with our responsibilities as a licenced sponsor.” Our Child Student visa guide covers the visa route for 13+ boarding entry; which immigration category, if any, applies to an 11+ applicant is a question for the school.

Policy 16.1 begins “We recognise that a candidate’s performance may be affected by particular circumstances, for example if:” and its list includes “there is relevant educational history, for example, education outside the British system”.

What is the 4.00pm registration close on a Dubai, Doha or Hong Kong clock?

The Joining the Senior School page lists registration as closing at “Friday 13 November 2026 – 4.00pm”. The conversions below read that as UK time, so each is labelled “if this is UK time”. GOV.UK says “In the UK the clocks go forward 1 hour at 1am on the last Sunday in March, and back 1 hour at 2am on the last Sunday in October.” and “When the clocks go back, the UK is on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).”. Its table lists the clocks going back on 25 October 2026 and forward on 28 March 2027, so London is on GMT, UTC+0, on Friday 13 November 2026.

London is also on GMT on Thursday 3 December 2026, from Monday 11 to Friday 22 January 2027 and on Friday 12 February 2027, so a time the school gives in UK time for those days converts by the same hours: Dubai/UAE and Oman 4 ahead, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia 3 ahead, Hong Kong and Singapore 8 ahead. Our time zones guide shows the same arithmetic for other deadlines.

Confidence and progress

My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Stage 4 interview and Stage 5 offers: what does a family abroad plan around?

The page numbers the stages. Stage 3 reads “Everyone who has registered for the 11+ entry by the deadline will be invited to take an entrance exam.” Stage 4 reads “Following the entrance exam, a number of students will be invited back to school for a 30 minute interview.” and adds “During the interview there will be further Maths and English testing, in the form of verbal questions.” “Parents are not interviewed as part of our admissions process.” The interviews are listed for “Monday 11 to Friday 22 January 2027”.

Stage 5 reads “Following interviews, those students who have been selected for a place to start in September will be sent an offer by email. Everyone who has been offered a place will be invited to an offer holders’ event at school, in plenty of time to help you make a decision.” The offer date is “Friday 12 February 2027” and acceptance is “Early March 2027 (TBC)”.

The form asks the parent to confirm “I understand that no feedback will be given following my daughter's assessment(s).” How the 30 minute interview is held for a girl living abroad is a question to put to admissions in writing, and it is in the list below; our video interviews guide covers online interviews for overseas 11+ and 13+ entry in general.

Question for admissions Where the words come from
Our daughter’s current school is outside the UK. Can it host the NLCS paper, and if it cannot, which facility will you accept where we live: a British Consulate or the British Council? Will you confirm the arrangement to us in writing, and which person at her school should we name in the Overseas Examination box?“under supervised exam conditions”, “a British Consulate”, “the British Council” and “Contact name and position of the person responsible for arranging exams”.
What date and start time, on which clock, applies to our daughter’s overseas sitting, and is it the same as the school’s Thursday 3 December 2026 exam?“Entrance exam”
Another school’s exam falls on the same day as NLCS’s for us. What should we tell you, as the form says you may ask about other schools we are applying to?“they may hold their entrance exam on the same day as ours;”
If our daughter is invited to interview between Monday 11 and Friday 22 January 2027, how is the 30 minute interview held for a girl living abroad, and which dates would she need?“invited back to school”
The policy asks for an appropriate guardian where the family is not resident in the UK; the form says pupils are expected to live with a parent in the locality. Which applies to us, and what must a guardian show to be appropriate?“an appropriate guardian has been arranged” and “live with a parent in the locality”.
Which immigration category, if any, does the school expect for our daughter, which documents should we send with the form, and by when?“Parents must be able to provide evidence if applicable.” and “if you have it or as soon as you have it”.
Once registration has closed, what does the school need from her current school for the reference it requests, and can that school send it from abroad?“we will request confidential references from your daughter’s primary school”
We live outside the UK. Does the condition on the school’s Bursaries page about the UK tax residence of the fee-paying parents apply to our family?Bursaries page: “resident in the UK for tax purposes”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my daughter sit the North London Collegiate School 11+ papers in the country where we live?

Clause 13.1 begins “If travel to the UK is not possible” and goes on to say that the School can arrange for papers to be sent to the applicant’s current school, where the applicant must sit the exams “under supervised exam conditions”. Clause 13.2 names “a British Consulate” if her school cannot host, while the form names “the British Council”. The school’s page lists the entrance exam on Thursday 3 December 2026; the date of an overseas sitting is a question for admissions. Registration closes at 4.00pm on Friday 13 November 2026. Ask admissions to confirm the facility in writing.

Do we need a guardian if we stay abroad while our daughter attends North London Collegiate School?

Clause 7.1 lists “Where a candidate’s family is not resident in the UK, an appropriate guardian has been arranged.” The registration form says “This is a day school and has no boarding facilities; pupils will be expected to live with a parent in the locality.” The two sentences sit in different documents, so put the question to admissions in writing and ask what makes a guardian appropriate. Registration closes at 4.00pm on Friday 13 November 2026.

Does my daughter need a visa to start at North London Collegiate School in September 2027?

Clause 7.1 asks that she “Have the appropriate immigration permission to live in the United Kingdom and to study at this School.” and the form asks “If your daughter is not a British or Irish citizen, does she hold another immigration category that permits her to study at the school?” Which category, if any, applies to her is a question for admissions: offers are notified on Friday 12 February 2027 and the Autumn Term begins on Friday 3 September 2027.

What time does NLCS registration close in Dubai, Doha, Hong Kong or Singapore?

The Joining the Senior School page lists registration as closing at “Friday 13 November 2026 – 4.00pm”. If this is UK time, London is on GMT (UTC+0), so it is 20:00 on Friday 13 November in Dubai/UAE and Oman (UTC+4), 19:00 in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia (UTC+3), and 00:00 on Saturday 14 November in Hong Kong and Singapore (UTC+8), because 16:00 + 8 hours is 24:00.

How is the NLCS interview held for a girl who lives abroad?

The school’s wording is “Following the entrance exam, a number of students will be invited back to school for a 30 minute interview.” and the interviews are listed for “Monday 11 to Friday 22 January 2027”. It adds “During the interview there will be further Maths and English testing, in the form of verbal questions.” How a girl living abroad is interviewed is a question to put to admissions in writing.

What happens if we miss the North London Collegiate School registration deadline for September 2027?

The form says “We will not be able to accept any applications received after the deadline.” The Occasional Places section of the Joining the Senior School page, which is about Years 8, 9 and 10, says “Please do not use this form if you are seeking a Year 7 place, as Year 7 entry is only available through the standard 11+ admissions process.” The deadline is 4.00pm on Friday 13 November 2026.
