11 Plus From the Gulf: Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi 2027

Which UK schools let a child in the Gulf sit the 11+ without flying in, and which weekday each sitting falls on.

Taking a UK 11+ from Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia or Oman means choosing between sittings that travel and sittings that do not. The London 11+ Consortium exam for 2027 entry, held on 27 November, 1 December or 3 December 2026, can be sat at an invigilated venue abroad, while Buckinghamshire says it cannot test a child who lives abroad until they return to the UK. Leading Tuition teaches 11+ online, so preparation runs from wherever the child lives.

What does Leading Tuition do for a child sitting the 11+ from the Gulf?

All of Leading Tuition’s lessons are delivered online, and families outside the UK can take the whole programme online. Our FAQs say that in one-to-one sessions “lessons are tailored to each student’s needs”, and our expert 11+ tutors begin by identifying the specific test format the child will face, then build the plan around it. That step matters from the Gulf: a child applying to a Consortium school, an ISEB Common Pre-Test school and a school with its own paper is preparing for three different sittings.

The sitting is arranged between the family, the school and an invigilating venue. The Consortium exam lasts 100 minutes (Francis Holland Regent’s Park calls it “a 100-minute assessment”) and cannot be taken at home, so timed sittings in a quiet environment are part of our preparation. Our FAQs say that for one-to-one lessons cancellations are fine as long as reasonable notice is given, and that our tutors will usually be happy to rearrange lessons. Test formats and scoring are covered in our 11+ school guides and the 2026-27 exam dates timetable; this page covers what changes for a family abroad.

Which weekday is each 2027-entry sitting?

Table 1 lists twelve distinct UK dates between 17 November 2026 and 8 January 2027, each carrying a written sitting of a school that says a child living abroad may take it, with the weekday of each. Four are Fridays, four are Thursdays, two are Tuesdays, one is a Wednesday and one, the Lady Eleanor Holles Problem-Solving Exam on 29 November 2026, is a Sunday. None of the dates in Table 1 is a Saturday or a Monday.

Table 1. 2027-entry written sittings, with what each school says about a child living abroad

UK date Weekday Sitting What the school says about a child living abroad
17, 18 and 19 November 2026 Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday Lady Eleanor Holles: ISEB Common Pre-Test sessions at the school (Stage 1a can also be taken at the current school) “Yes, we can arrange for your daughter to sit the entrance examinations overseas.” Stage 1a is taken “either at LEH or their current school”

Several schools run a separate route for families abroad: James Allen’s publishes an “11+ Overseas Registration Form”, Francis Holland Regent’s Park an overseas “Register now – overseas” button, and Haberdashers’ Boys’ and Girls’ an online form for families “currently residing outside of the UK”. For the schools in Table 1 other than Dulwich College, registration closes between Monday 2 November 2026 (City of London School) and Wednesday 18 November (Forest); Dulwich College’s overseas registration deadline for September 2027 entry to Year 7 falls earlier, on Friday 2 October 2026.

What do Gulf-side sources publish about the week?

The British Embassy in Kuwait states Kuwait’s weekend outright. The other four countries are represented by opening hours, not a stated weekend: those of the British Council office in each and, for Saudi Arabia, also of the British Embassy in Riyadh. They are office hours, not exam timetables.

Table 2. What each Gulf-side source says

Country Source What it publishes
Qatar British Council Qatar Lists Customer Services hours of Sunday to Wednesday 8:00 am – 8:00 pm (Monday “Closed from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM”) and Thursday and Saturday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, and “Friday: Closed”
Bahrain British Council Bahrain Lists “Saturday to Thursday 9:00 to 17:00”, with Wednesday “closed from 13:30 to 14:30” and “Friday closed”
Kuwait British Embassy Kuwait (GOV.UK) “The weekend in Kuwait is Friday and Saturday.”
Oman British Council Oman Lists its Customer Service and Call Centre as “Sunday to Thursday: 9:00 am to 6:00 pm”
Saudi Arabia British Council Saudi Arabia Lists an exams desk at KFUPM in the Eastern Province as “Sun–Thurs 08:30–15:30” and its Riyadh Diplomatic Quarter office as “Sun to Thurs 10:30 - 21:00”
Saudi Arabia British Embassy Riyadh (GOV.UK) “Embassy opening hours: Sunday to Thursday, 8am to 3pm (local time)”

The sources that name Friday treat it alike: the Qatar and Bahrain British Council offices list it as closed and the British Embassy in Kuwait puts it in the weekend. Saturday is where they differ: the Qatar and Bahrain offices list Saturday hours, the Kuwait embassy puts it in the weekend, and the Oman and Saudi Arabia British Council pages and the Riyadh embassy list Sunday to Thursday only. Alternatives exist: the Consortium also offers a Tuesday and a Thursday, and Alleyn’s sits overseas candidates on Thursday 7 January 2027, a day before its Friday sitting. Putney High School says it “cannot offer an alternative date” for Friday 20 November 2026.

This page states a country’s weekend only where an official source does, which here means Kuwait. For the other four, set each date against your child’s school week and ask the venue which days it can invigilate.

What time will the sitting be in the Gulf?

Every sitting in Table 1 falls between the UK clocks going back on 25 October 2026 and going forward on 28 March 2027, so the UK is on GMT throughout.

Table 3. Clock gap between the UK and the Gulf

Country Offset in the IANA tz database Gap while the UK is on BST Gap while the UK is on GMT
Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia UTC+3 (Bahrain follows Asia/Qatar; Kuwait follows Asia/Riyadh) 2 hours 3 hours
Oman UTC+4 (Muscat follows Asia/Dubai) 3 hours 4 hours

Source: IANA time zone database (with the links in its backward file) and GOV.UK for the UK clock dates; none of the zones has a daylight-saving rule.

The start time comes from the school. The Consortium says its exam “must start within a certain time frame within the day” and that its schools “will advise their applicants of the exact date and start time for their sitting”. As an illustration only, a 09:30 start in London is 12:30 in Doha, Manama, Kuwait City and Riyadh and 13:30 in Muscat.

Which other UK schools let a child sit in the Gulf, and which want the child in the building?

Table 4 lists further schools that publish an arrangement for families abroad.

Table 4. Other schools that say a child living abroad can sit

School What it says about sitting abroad
Haberdashers’ Boys’ “We welcome applications from overseas students at all our main entry points. We are able to facilitate assessments in your country of residence and will work with your chosen invigilator.” Year 7 first-round assessment: Friday 20 November 2026
Haberdashers’ Girls’ Under its Occasional Places and Overseas section: “it is possible to sit our entrance assessments under the supervision of their current school”. Year 7 first-round assessment: Monday 23 November 2026
James Allen’s Girls’ School “11+ Overseas applicants may apply and can sit their ISEB Common Pre-test abroad, along with the creative writing element of the Welcome Morning, rather than attending in person.” The ISEB test is sat “between early November and 9 December”; 11+ registration closes on 10 November 2026.
Wimbledon High School “Yes, you may make an application for your daughter from overseas. Please do contact your local British Council to confirm that they will invigilate the assessment … Alternatively, your daughter’s current school can also invigilate the assessments if you do not have a local British Council office near you.”
Haileybury “international pupils can be invigilated online by us via a Zoom meeting”; within a seven-day window set by the school, applicants “may also be permitted to sit at the offices of the British Council or at a lawyer’s office”; “we do not permit our entrance exams to be taken at the applicant’s current school”
Felsted School “Our tests can be taken remotely at the pupil’s current school, a lawyer’s office or British Council office.”
Roedean School “Those living overseas will sit their tests in their country of residence.”

For boarding places at 11+ and 12+, Downe House assesses one year before entry and asks international candidates to sit the ISEB Common Pre-Test “by the middle of October” against 30 November for UK candidates. Our guides to Lady Eleanor Holles, James Allen’s and Haberdashers’ Boys’ cover those schools’ tests.

What does the ISEB Common Pre-Test route look like from the Gulf?

ISEB says “The tests can be taken by pupils in the UK and overseas” and that they “can be taken between August and May of each academic year”. Dates are set locally: “The invigilation centre will schedule the tests in their portal”, and the centre sets a test window, so the date comes from the venue and the school’s deadline. Approved centres can include British Councils worldwide, but “a parent or guardian cannot add a venue as a new invigilation centre”. The first step for a Gulf family is to ask the child’s own school whether it is, or will become, an approved centre.

Which schools say the child must attend?

St Paul’s School says of 11+ entry, “Overseas candidates must attend the written examinations in person and may need to return to the UK at a later date if invited back for an in-person interview.” St Mary’s School Ascot says, “All who are registered come to St Mary’s to sit their entrance examination in the November or December preceding the year of entry.” Wycombe Abbey says, “Please note that all candidates must come to Wycombe Abbey for assessment.” For these schools the trip is part of the application.

Who can invigilate in Doha, Manama, Kuwait City, Riyadh or Muscat?

South Hampstead High School gives the Consortium’s order: “Please ask your daughter’s current school if they can invigilate the exam. If this is not possible, please contact the British Council in your country to see if they have suitable facilities nearby.” If neither works, parents must find a professional venue, because “The Consortium does not allow candidates to be tested at their home, a tutor’s house or anywhere which is not considered a professional venue”, and the school then deals with the venue directly to send “candidate login details and supporting documentation”. Haileybury differs: it does “not permit our entrance exams to be taken at the applicant’s current school”, invigilates international pupils itself over Zoom and, within a seven-day window set by the school, international applicants “may also be permitted to sit at the offices of the British Council or at a lawyer’s office”.

The child’s own school is the first call, and the Gulf has many British-curriculum schools to ask. The Department for Education’s Get Information About Schools (GIAS) register lists 22 open British schools overseas in Qatar, 14 in Kuwait, 10 in Saudi Arabia, 4 in Bahrain and 2 in Oman, 52 in all (open establishments, country taken from the address where the register’s country field is blank, retrieved 3 October 2026). Entries are campuses, so one school group can appear more than once, and the British schools overseas accreditation scheme is voluntary. Qatar’s entries include Doha College and Sherborne School Qatar; Saudi Arabia’s include Reigate Grammar School, Riyadh. Whether a given school hosts UK entrance tests is a question for that school.

What does a Gulf address do to a state grammar place?

The Department for Education says that if an application is made from another country, local authorities should consider it “adequate proof of an intention to move or return to the area”. It adds that where a parent is “unable to provide evidence of a return to the area” (before the new school year, for normal-round and late applications), admission authorities could apply a catchment area policy or distance tie-break using the parents’ place of residence at the point the application is made, and that if this is in another country it “might give the child a lower priority for admission if the admission authority operates a catchment area or if the child is tied for the final place available with other applicants”. What each body then does with the address, and whether it will test a child who lives abroad at all, is its own rule. Table 5 gives one line from each, with a link to the area page that sets out its registration and address evidence.

Table 5. One quoted line per area

Area One line from the body that sets the rule
Kent “Registration is open to parents of children resident in England (not including Crown Dependencies for example Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man), and the children of UK service personnel with a confirmed posting to the UK and Crown Servants returning from overseas to the UK, who will transfer to secondary school in 2027.” (Kent County Council)
Buckinghamshire “If your child currently lives abroad, we will not be able to test them until they return to the UK. You should then contact us.” (Buckinghamshire Council)
Sutton Wilson’s School: “There is no overseas provision; in order to sit the test your child must be present at one of the participating schools.”
Barnet “If you are living abroad at the time of application, your overseas address will be used for home-to-school distance calculations.” (Barnet Council)
Kingston (Tiffin) The Tiffin Girls’ School: “If you live outside the catchment area, your child will be ranked below all applicants who live within the catchment, regardless of their test score.”
Redbridge “Your child needs to live in the blue lined area on the map.” (Redbridge Council)
Essex (Chelmsford) King Edward VI Grammar School: “Applicants intending to move to Essex for the start of their child’s Year 7 education, but who currently live abroad, will take the test on the main test date at a place to be decided in consultation with the CSSE and the applicant’s parents or carers.”

Which address dates apply to the September 2027 intake?

A returning family plans backwards from the day each school counts the address, and the days differ. Table 6 lists five for the same September 2027 entry. Four fall on or before 8 January 2027; Buckinghamshire’s late-testing date runs into the summer term of Year 6.

Table 6. Five address dates for one intake

Date Body What it says
31 August 2026 Kendrick School, Reading “Evidence is required of a single address on 31st August 2026.”
10 October (of Year 6) King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford “Any applicant moving to the priority area after 10 October of Year 6 will not be considered a ‘priority area’ applicant.”
31 October 2026 Nonsuch High School, Sutton Catchment places depend on the “permanent place of residence on 31 October 2026 (the deadline for submission of the Common Application Form)”
7 January 2027 The Latymer School, Edmonton “Priority is given to those applicants who are resident in the Inner Area as of Thursday 7th January 2027.”
18 June 2027 Buckinghamshire Council “Families who move into Buckinghamshire by 18 June 2027 will be offered late testing for their child, as long as they can provide evidence that they have moved.”

Source: each body’s own page, linked in the table, read on 3 October 2026; Code wording from the School Admissions Code 2021.

The School Admissions Code sets the normal-round deadline for secondary applications at “31 October”, and paragraph 2.9(e) lists having “missed entrance tests for selective places” among the grounds on which an admission authority must not refuse a child a place on its own. For service families with a confirmed posting and Crown servants returning from overseas, paragraph 2.21 says admission authorities must “allocate a place in advance of the family arriving in the area (as long as one is available), provided the application is accompanied by an official letter that declares a relocation date”. For the routes after the normal round, see our guides to relocating to the UK mid-cycle, joining a grammar school after Year 7 and the Forces families guide.

What changes if your child is not a British citizen?

A child’s immigration status decides the route before the test does. The Department for Education says Child Student and Student visa holders “cannot lawfully, under their UK entry conditions, study at a state-funded school”, and GOV.UK limits the Child Student visa to children “between 4 and 17 years old” who want to study at an independent school; holders cannot study at an academy or a local authority-funded (maintained) school. Barnet Council tells applicants to check that a child has a right under UK entry conditions to study at a state-funded school before applying, while the Department says state-funded schools “must not ask to see passports or other immigration information as a condition of admission”.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child sit the London 11+ Consortium exam in Doha, Manama or Kuwait City?

Yes. South Hampstead High School's FAQ says it is possible for candidates to take the Consortium exam overseas. It asks first whether the child's current school can invigilate, then points to the British Council in your country; the exam cannot be taken at home or at a tutor's house. The 2027-entry sittings are Friday 27 November, Tuesday 1 December and Thursday 3 December 2026.

Is a Friday sitting a problem from Qatar or Bahrain?

It can be. The British Council office in Qatar lists Friday as closed in its Customer Services hours, the office in Bahrain lists Saturday to Thursday with Friday closed, and the British Embassy in Kuwait gives Friday and Saturday as Kuwait's weekend. These are office hours, not exam timetables, so ask the venue. The Consortium offers Tuesday 1 December and Thursday 3 December alongside Friday 27 November, and Alleyn's sits overseas candidates on Thursday 7 January 2027 rather than Friday 8 January.

What time would the exam start in the Gulf?

The UK clocks go back on 25 October 2026 and forward on 28 March 2027, so every sitting in Table 1 falls while the UK is on GMT. Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are then 3 hours ahead (UTC+3) and Oman is 4 hours ahead (UTC+4). As an illustration, a 09:30 start in London is 12:30 in Doha and 13:30 in Muscat. The real start time comes from the school, which advises the exact date and start time of each Consortium sitting.

Can a child living in the Gulf sit the Kent Test or the Buckinghamshire test?

Each council states its own condition. Kent says registration is open to parents of children resident in England, and to the children of UK service personnel with a confirmed posting to the UK and Crown servants returning from overseas to the UK. Buckinghamshire says that if a child currently lives abroad it will not be able to test them until they return to the UK, and that families who move in by 18 June 2027 will be offered late testing.

Do we have to be living in the UK before we apply for a Year 7 place?

Not for the local-authority application itself. The Department for Education says that if an application is made from another country, local authorities should consider it adequate proof of an intention to move or return to the area. Each area sets its own conditions: for September 2027 secondary transfer Barnet says you will need to be living in Barnet or have a link Barnet address where you intend to take up residency by the start of the school year, and Wilson's and Nonsuch in Sutton need a linked address in the borough. The normal-round deadline for secondary applications is 31 October 2026.

How many British-curriculum schools are there in the Gulf to ask about invigilation?

The Department for Education's GIAS register lists 52 open British schools overseas with an address in Qatar (22), Kuwait (14), Saudi Arabia (10), Bahrain (4) and Oman (2). The count takes the country from the address where the register's country field is blank and was retrieved on 3 October 2026. Whether a school invigilates UK entrance tests is for that school to say, so ask it first.
