How Many External Sixth Form Places Does Highgate Offer?

Highgate's Sixth Form admits approximately 30 new pupils from other schools into Year 12 each September, according to the school's official 16+ admissions page. These external joiners sit alongside around 185 pupils moving up from Highgate's own Year 11, producing a combined Year 12 intake of roughly 215 pupils and a total Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13) of around 380 students. Highgate's own 16+ Admissions Policy document, published for the 2026 entry cycle, describes a slightly wider band of "approximately 30 to 40 pupils" joining "upwards of 150" internal progressors — the school's live 2027-entry page gives the more precise current figures of 30 external and 185 internal. Because external places are limited to roughly 30 a year against several hundred applications from a mix of independent and state schools, the process is genuinely selective, even though there is no written exam to sit.

Highgate does not publish an exact applicant-to-place ratio, and unlike some competitor guides, we won't invent one. What we can say with confidence, sourced directly from the school's official 16+ admissions page, is the shape of the cohort: roughly 30 external seats each year, an 87:13 ratio of internal to external joiners in the combined Year 12 group, and a Sixth Form that stays close to 380 pupils across both year groups once external and internal students combine.

What GCSE Grades Do You Need for Highgate Sixth Form Entry?

The current published entry requirement (2027 entry cycle) is: grade 8 or 9 at GCSE in each of the four subjects the applicant wants to study at A level, plus an additional four grades of 7 or equivalent in other subjects. Where a candidate wants to start a subject at A level that they have not studied before, Highgate requires a grade 8 in a closely related GCSE subject instead. This is a subject-specific bar rather than a blanket grade count — a candidate applying for Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics needs 8s or 9s in those four subjects specifically, not simply eight good GCSEs overall.

It is worth flagging a discrepancy we found between Highgate's live admissions page and its formally published 16+ Admissions Policy PDF (approved by the Bursar, last reviewed May 2025, for 2026 entry). The PDF states offers are conditional on "at least three 8/9 grades and five 7 grades... including English and Mathematics." The live 2027-entry admissions page, updated by the school in June 2026, instead describes the subject-specific "8s or 9s in the four A-level subjects plus four 7s" wording quoted above. Several independent tutoring sites (including Keystone Tutors) still quote the older three-8/9-plus-five-7 phrasing from the policy PDF. Families applying for 2027 entry should work from the current live-page wording, since it is the version the school is actively using to assess this year's applicants — this reconciliation between the two official documents is not something we found addressed on any competitor page.

What Happens on the Highgate 16+ Interview Day?

There is no written assessment at 16+. Instead, candidates who apply are invited to an in-person interview day at the school — for 2027 entry this is scheduled for Saturday 14 November 2026. On the day, each candidate has four short subject-based interviews, one for each of the A-level subjects they have nominated, plus a general interview with a senior member of staff (typically drawn from the Deputy Head Academic, the Assistant Head for the Sixth Form, or the Head of Admissions). No personal statement is required, and the school explicitly states there is no written test component.

Interviewers assess four things: performance across the academic and general interviews; predicted GCSE grades; the confidential report and school reference from the candidate's current school; and evidence of genuine commitment to co-curricular life, since Highgate is explicit that it wants pupils who will contribute beyond the classroom. If a candidate performs strongly in three of their four subject interviews but weakly in the fourth, Highgate may offer a place conditional on the candidate switching that fourth subject and completing a further interview in the replacement subject. Candidates living abroad who cannot attend in person may interview by Zoom instead, for an additional fee of £210 on top of the standard application fee.

What Are the Key Dates for Highgate 16+ Entry (2027 Entry Cycle)?

Highgate publishes a fixed timeline for each 16+ admissions cycle. The table below sets out the confirmed dates for entry in September 2027, taken directly from the school's live admissions page (last updated June 2026).

Offers made in December 2026 are conditional on candidates achieving the required GCSE grades the following August. If a candidate does not meet the conditions, Highgate refunds the deposit paid on acceptance. Highgate also operates a reserve list for places that become available after the initial offer round; this list closes once the academic year preceding entry finishes, and only in exceptional circumstances will the school consider a Year 13 (rather than Year 12) application.

How Competitive Is Highgate 16+ Entry, and What Do Sixth Formers Go On to Achieve?

Highgate does not publish a headline applicant-to-place ratio for 16+, but the outcomes data the school does publish gives a clear sense of what successful candidates go on to achieve, and therefore what standard interviewers are looking for. In the 2025 A-level results, Highgate's Sixth Form (192 students sitting 635 exams) achieved 43.5% of all grades at A*, 80.2% at A*/A and 92.7% at A*, A or B. On the university side, 81.4% of leavers secured places at Russell Group universities, 76.2% got into their first-choice university outright, and a further group secured first-or-insurance-choice offers, taking that combined figure to 86%. Thirty-one pupils from the 2025 leaving cohort took up confirmed Oxbridge places, four secured Medicine places, and 19 enrolled at international universities across countries including the US, Canada, Ireland, Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands. Academically, Highgate's Sixth Form offers a choice of 28 subjects at A level, spanning everything from Ancient History and Classical Civilisation to Computer Science, Economics, Politics and a full range of modern and classical languages. Students typically take four subjects into Year 12 and narrow to three for Year 13's A-level exams, which is why the four-subject GCSE grade requirement at admission maps directly onto what a candidate will actually study.

In practical terms, this means the most useful preparation window for an external 16+ candidate is the whole of Year 10 and Year 11, not just the autumn term before interviews. Because Highgate assesses candidates against four specific nominated subjects rather than a general academic profile, a candidate should ideally have settled on their probable A-level choices by the start of Year 11, so that GCSE study in those subjects can be pushed toward the 8/9 band well before the November interview day. What Financial Support Is Available at 16+ (Bursaries, Music Awards and Fees)?

Highgate does not offer academic scholarships at 16+ — the school states this explicitly in its admissions policy. It does offer two other forms of financial support. Means-tested bursaries are available, with the Admissions Office running a separate application process; preference is given to bursary candidates currently at state schools, and to families where one or both parents meet Highgate's definition of "key worker." Only in unusual and particular circumstances would a bursary be awarded to a child already at an independent school. Music awards (scholarships and exhibitions) are made by audition at the point of 16+ entry: scholarships typically bring 5-10% fee remission, occasionally rising to a maximum of 20%, plus free tuition on two instruments taught by Highgate's own instrumental staff. Exhibitions carry no fee remission but do include tuition on one or two instruments. How Is 16+ Entry Different From Highgate's Other Admissions Points?

Highgate has four main entry points into the Senior School and Sixth Form: 4+, 7+, 11+ and 16+, plus occasional places that arise when pupils leave mid-way through a year group. The 16+ process described on this page is entirely different in mechanism: there is no written exam at all, GCSE attainment and subject-specific interviews replace it, and the whole process runs a year later in the child's school career, assessed against GCSE performance rather than an aptitude test. A family with one child sitting Highgate's 11+ in Year 6 and another applying at 16+ in Year 11 will experience two admissions processes that share almost nothing beyond the same school and the same Admissions Office.
