ESAT tutoring at Leading Tuition is one-to-one preparation for the Engineering and Science Admissions Test, planned around the modules a student's Cambridge or Imperial course requires. For 2027 entry, UAT-UK ran the first sitting on 12th-16th October 2026; the second runs 4th-8th January 2027, with booking open until 6pm GMT on 21st December 2026. Every module is 40 minutes of 27 multiple-choice questions, with no calculator.

Our specialist ESAT tutors build each one-to-one programme around the modules a student's Cambridge or Imperial course requires, starting with a diagnostic in exactly those modules. Book a short call about ESAT tuition for the sitting your student has booked.

What does one-to-one ESAT tutoring with Leading Tuition cover?

Our programme starts from the module list, not from a generic ESAT syllabus. UAT-UK's ESAT page says there are five ESAT modules and that most courses require Mathematics 1 plus two further modules. It also says module choices cannot be changed without cancelling and re-booking the test. So the first job in a first session is to establish which modules a student's courses require, using the university's own page, and to write the programme from that list.

From there, a student's sessions with their ESAT tutor work through five things:

The rest of this page sets out what each of those steps rests on: the course-by-course module requirements, what each module assumes, the two sittings for 2027 entry, and how the score works. Where a rule belongs to Cambridge, Imperial or UAT-UK, it is quoted in their words and linked to their page.

Which ESAT modules does your Cambridge or Imperial course require for 2027 entry?

The ESAT is a modular test, and the module set is fixed by the course. Cambridge's ESAT page lists the four Cambridge courses that need it: Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Engineering, Natural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine. It states that "Mathematics 1 is compulsory for all candidates" and that the remaining modules depend on the course. Engineering is the one fixed set; the other three leave two choices open.

Cambridge course (2027 entry) ESAT modules required Total sitting time
Engineering Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, Physics 120 minutes
Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology Mathematics 1 plus any two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2 120 minutes
Natural Sciences Mathematics 1 plus any two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2 120 minutes
Veterinary Medicine Mathematics 1 plus any two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2 120 minutes

The Cambridge Engineering course page says the same in its own entry requirements: all applicants for Engineering at Cambridge must complete Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Physics. The Cambridge Natural Sciences course page says all applicants take the ESAT at an authorised assessment centre and sends readers to the admissions test page for the modules.

Imperial states its requirements department by department on its own ESAT page, and the table below reproduces that table. Imperial's page says you cannot change your modules on test day.

Imperial department (2027 entry) Module 1 Module 2 Module 3 Total sitting time
Aeronautics Mathematics 1 Mathematics 2 Physics 120 minutes
Chemical Engineering Mathematics 1 Mathematics 2 Chemistry 120 minutes
Civil and Environmental Engineering Mathematics 1 Mathematics 2 Physics 120 minutes
Dyson School of Design Engineering Mathematics 1 Mathematics 2 Not applicable 80 minutes
Electrical and Electronic Engineering Mathematics 1 Mathematics 2 Physics 120 minutes
Life Sciences Mathematics 1 Chemistry Biology 120 minutes
Mechanical Engineering Mathematics 1 Mathematics 2 Physics 120 minutes
Physics Mathematics 1 Mathematics 2 Physics 120 minutes

Two patterns matter for how we plan. Imperial's engineering and physics departments all list Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and, bar two exceptions, Physics: Chemical Engineering swaps Physics for Chemistry, and the Dyson School of Design Engineering takes Mathematics 1 and Mathematics 2 only. Life Sciences is the one department that drops Mathematics 2 and asks for Chemistry and Biology instead. For a student heading to Cambridge Natural Sciences, the open choice is where a tutor's advice earns its place: UAT-UK says that if you apply to two courses that require the ESAT and one has a free choice of module, you must sit the compulsory module for your other course. In practice, a student applying to Cambridge Natural Sciences and Imperial Life Sciences sits Mathematics 1, Chemistry and Biology, and the programme is built on those three.

If your two courses have conflicting compulsory requirements, UAT-UK says to contact it through your online account before booking a test. We plan from the confirmed module set, so a student should settle this question with UAT-UK first.

Which courses at Cambridge and Imperial use the TMUA instead?

Not every mathematical or computing course at these two universities uses the ESAT. UAT-UK's course list for 2027 entry, last updated April 2026, shows Cambridge Computer Science, Economics and Mathematics on the TMUA, and Imperial's Mathematics, Mathematics and Computer Science and Computing degrees (for example BSc Mathematics, G100) on the TMUA. A student applying to those courses needs a different test and a different programme, covered on our TMUA tutoring page.

What does each ESAT module assume, and how does that set the order of our sessions?

UAT-UK's content specification, written for assessment in October 2026 and January 2027, states the format in one place:

ESAT module Who sits it Questions Time allowed
Mathematics 1 Every candidate 27 multiple-choice 40 minutes
Mathematics 2 Candidates whose course lists it, or who choose it where the course leaves the choice open 27 multiple-choice 40 minutes
Physics Candidates whose course lists it, or who choose it where the course leaves the choice open 27 multiple-choice 40 minutes
Chemistry Candidates whose course lists it, or who choose it where the course leaves the choice open 27 multiple-choice 40 minutes
Biology Candidates whose course lists it, or who choose it where the course leaves the choice open 27 multiple-choice 40 minutes

The specification adds the detail that shapes a programme. "All modules will assume knowledge of the content of Mathematics 1." Biology, Chemistry and Physics each draw on their own topics plus the Mathematics 1 topics, and Mathematics 2 draws on the Mathematics 1 topics and a further set labelled MM. That MM set runs from algebra and functions and sequences and series through coordinate geometry, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation and integration to graphs of functions. This is why we begin every student's work on Mathematics 1, whatever the other modules are: a gap there lowers the ceiling in every module the student sits. Students who are still covering that material at school often do the same work in step with our A level Maths tutoring or A level Further Maths tutoring, and those sitting Physics can combine the ESAT work with A level Physics tutoring.

Three further rules in the specification change how a student practises. First, each module is separately timed: "If a candidate finishes a module early, the time will not be carried over to the next module", so a spare minute in Mathematics 1 cannot be banked for Physics. Second, there is no calculator, and candidates are given an erasable booklet for working. Third, the specification says some questions are a straightforward application of knowledge while others need "the application of principles in less familiar contexts", which is why practice has to include unfamiliar setups and not only the topics a student knows well.

The time budget is concrete. A module gives 40 minutes, which is 2,400 seconds, for 27 questions: 2,400 ÷ 27 is about 89 seconds a question, and that average includes reading time. A student who spends three minutes on one question has spent the allowance of two. Our timed blocks are set at this pace, and the review afterwards records where the time actually went.

Which ESAT sitting applies to your 2027 entry, and when do results arrive?

UAT-UK's key dates page states that its dates apply to the 2027 entry cycle, with tests in October 2026 and January 2027. The two sittings are set out below, with each entry taken from that page and from Imperial's ESAT page for the China, Hong Kong and Macau day.

October 2026 sitting January 2027 sitting
Test window 12th-16th October 2026 4th-8th January 2027

Results released to the UAT-UK account Monday 16th November 2026 8th February 2027
Who UAT-UK says it is for All candidates for 2027 entry Not applicable for Cambridge or Oxford applicants unless applying to a mature college with a January admissions deadline at Cambridge, or an Oxford Foundation Year programme with a January deadline

Which sitting applies depends on the university, and each states its own rule. Cambridge says: "If you're applying at the 15 October deadline, you must take the test in this first sitting." Its mature applicants in the January round can register for 4th-8th January 2027 and must book by 21st December 2026. Imperial says: "If you are applying to the University of Cambridge or the University of Oxford, you must take the test in October." For other applicants, UAT-UK states that there is no advantage to sitting in either session, but you can only sit once within an admissions cycle, and Imperial says only your first test score will be considered.

For a student whose course lets them choose, the January 2027 sitting can be booked until 21st December 2026 at 6pm GMT. That is 14 days before the window opens on 4th January 2027, so a student cannot book late and then revise harder. We plan backwards from the first day of the window the student has booked: diagnostic first, Mathematics 1 consolidation next, then full timed sets of the required modules. The results dates also matter if an applicant wants a score in hand before choosing between courses: UAT-UK releases October 2026 results on Monday 16th November 2026 and January 2027 results on 8th February 2027, each 31 days after the last day of its window. A student applying for a later entry year should read the key dates page again before booking, because the dates above belong to the 2027 entry cycle.

How is the ESAT scored, and what do we aim for?

UAT-UK's results page says each module is reported on a scale from 1 (low) to 9 (high) to one decimal place, with a separate score for each module taken. It states that the score scale in any year is based on the ability distribution of the cohort, with the median fixed at 4.5, and that UAT-UK does not accept appeals of test scores. Its ESAT page adds that there is no pass or fail score, that final scores are based on the number of correct answers, and that you do not lose marks for incorrect ones.

Each of those facts sets a rule for our sessions. Because wrong answers cost nothing, a student learns to give an answer to all 27 questions in a module, including the last few they cannot finish properly. Because scores are per module, we track each module on its own and do not blend them into one figure. Because there is no pass mark, we do not coach to a threshold; the aim is the best score in each module the course requires, and a student's course page, not a number, sets which modules those are. UAT-UK adds that candidates should not expect to score as highly on these tests as they have in their school exams.

Universities then use the scores as one input. Imperial's page on understanding ESAT scores says it considers scores alongside other parts of the UCAS application, such as the personal statement, and that a high score does not mean an application will be successful. Imperial also publishes an interactive dashboard of anonymous test score data by department for its 2025 entry cycle, and says that data is historic and should not be taken as indicative of requirements for later cycles. We therefore read it as context, not as a target.

What does UAT-UK provide free, and what do our sessions use?

On its preparation page, UAT-UK says: "All necessary preparatory materials are available, free of charge, to all candidates." It lists a test specification for each test, with "a detailed list of possible topics that may be assessed", and sample tests in two types: specimen tests, which "include explained answers", and practice tests, which it recommends doing "under timed conditions". It also says test content "typically consists of material candidates have already studied at school".

Our sessions use those same documents. The content specification is the topic list we work from, the specimen tests are where a student first sees each module's question style, and the practice tests are held back for timed runs. Around them our tutors teach the school-level science and mathematics the specification lists, and review the student's own working. UAT-UK also states that "The sharing of test content either during or after the admissions cycle is strictly prohibited." We do not share test content, and we do not ask students to recall questions after a sitting.

Our expert ESAT tutors work from UAT-UK's specification and specimen tests and teach the school-level science and mathematics behind each module, one to one, for Cambridge and Imperial applicants. Book a short call about ESAT tuition for your course's module set.

Where does ESAT preparation sit alongside the rest of the application?

The ESAT is one component. For the format, the history of the test and the wider guidance for students applying from outside the UK, our ESAT preparation guide covers the test itself, and our admissions tests hub lists the other tests we prepare students for. Cambridge applicants who are invited forward face an interview as well, and our Cambridge Engineering interview preparation and Cambridge Natural Sciences interview preparation pages cover those subjects.

Leading Tuition is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026, and 91% of our students achieve their desired grades.

Frequently asked questions about ESAT tutoring

Which ESAT modules do I sit if I apply to both Cambridge Natural Sciences and Imperial Life Sciences?

Sit Mathematics 1, Chemistry and Biology. Cambridge Natural Sciences asks for Mathematics 1 plus any two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2, while Imperial Life Sciences lists Mathematics 1, Chemistry and Biology. UAT-UK says that where one course leaves the choice open, you must sit the compulsory modules for your other course, and module choices cannot be changed after booking without cancelling and re-booking.

Can a Cambridge applicant still sit the ESAT in January 2027?

Only in the exception Cambridge names. Cambridge says applicants at the 15 October deadline must take the first sitting, 12th-16th October 2026. A mature applicant applying in the January round can register for 4th-8th January 2027, booking by 21st December 2026. UAT-UK states the January sitting is not applicable to Cambridge applicants unless they apply to a mature college with a January admissions deadline.

Can I sit the ESAT twice in one admissions cycle?

No. UAT-UK says there is no advantage to either session, but you can only sit once within an admissions cycle. Imperial adds that only your first test score will be considered. The October 2026 sitting ran 12th-16th October 2026 and the January 2027 sitting runs 4th-8th January 2027, so the choice is which one sitting to book, not which result to keep.

Is a calculator allowed in the ESAT?

No. UAT-UK states that you will not be able to use a calculator or dictionary, and the content specification says candidates are provided with an erasable booklet for working. Each module gives 40 minutes for 27 multiple-choice questions, which is about 89 seconds a question (2,400 seconds divided by 27), so our timed practice is done by hand.

Do wrong answers lose marks, and how is the ESAT scored?

Wrong answers lose nothing. UAT-UK says final scores are based on the number of correct answers, with no marks deducted for incorrect ones, so every one of the 27 questions in a module is worth attempting. Each module is reported separately on a scale from 1 (low) to 9 (high) to one decimal place, and UAT-UK fixes the median at 4.5.

How long is the ESAT and when do results arrive?

Three modules take 120 minutes, because each module lasts 40 minutes. Imperial's Dyson School of Design Engineering lists two modules, Mathematics 1 and Mathematics 2, which is 80 minutes. UAT-UK releases October 2026 results on Monday 16th November 2026 and January 2027 results on 8th February 2027, in the candidate's UAT-UK account.

Do you share ESAT questions or past test content?

No. UAT-UK states that sharing test content during or after the admissions cycle is strictly prohibited, and we do not do it. Our sessions use UAT-UK's content specification, its specimen tests with explained answers and its practice tests done under timed conditions, together with our own teaching of the school-level science and mathematics the specification lists.

Which Cambridge and Imperial courses use the TMUA instead of the ESAT?

UAT-UK's course list for 2027 entry, last updated April 2026, shows Cambridge Computer Science, Economics and Mathematics on the TMUA, and Imperial's Mathematics, Mathematics and Computer Science and Computing degrees (for example BSc Mathematics, G100) on the TMUA. A student applying to those courses sits the Test of Mathematics for University Admission, not the ESAT.

Checked against UAT-UK's ESAT, key dates, results and preparation pages and content specification (esat-tmua.ac.uk), the University of Cambridge's ESAT, Engineering and Natural Sciences pages (undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk) and Imperial College London's ESAT pages (imperial.ac.uk).
