IB HL Physics · Chemistry · Maths — how your syllabus maps to Cambridge and Imperial's ESAT
Book a Free ConsultationThe IB is one of the most common qualifications among international applicants to Cambridge Engineering, Natural Sciences, Oxford Engineering, and Imperial. This guide explains exactly how your IB HL courses map to each ESAT module, where the gaps are, and how to fill them efficiently.
You sit Mathematics 1 (compulsory) plus two additional subject modules (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Mathematics 2) determined by your course. Cambridge Engineering: Maths 1 + Physics + Maths 2. Cambridge Natural Sciences: Maths 1 + your two most relevant sciences. Each module is 40 minutes, 27 questions, no calculator.
Good coverage. Gaps: Newtonian mechanics in complex scenarios, some atomic physics depth. Well covered: kinematics, Newton's laws, waves, electric fields, circuits, quantum concepts. Main adaptation: speed (89 seconds per question vs more generous IB timing).
Strong coverage. Organic chemistry, reaction mechanisms, equilibrium, and electrochemistry all covered in IB HL. Main challenge: quantitative precision at ESAT speed rather than content gaps. Timed past-paper practice is the key activity.
The ESAT's time pressure — 27 questions in 40 minutes — is one of its defining challenges. Under 90 seconds per question sounds manageable in theory but is demanding in practice, particularly for students used to IB or A-level examinations where questions are longer and time is proportionally more generous. Speed is a skill that needs specific practice; it does not develop automatically through content study.
An effective timed practice strategy for IB students preparing for ESAT:
For the Physics paper specifically, it is worth identifying which of the 27 questions you can answer quickly (familiar IB topics) versus which will take longer (gap topics). In an exam setting, answering the familiar questions first and returning to harder questions with remaining time is a more reliable strategy than working sequentially.
Leading Tuition's IB-to-ESAT specialists understand the specific gap topics that repeatedly catch IB students on ESAT papers. Our preparation sessions focus on these gaps — vector mechanics, circular motion, RC circuits, and similar topics — rather than reviewing content you already know well. All sessions via video. Mathematics 1: Covered well by IB HL Maths AA (calculus, algebra, functions, probability). Mathematics 2: Extends into 3D vectors, matrix operations beyond IB level, and some calculus applications. Budget 2–3 weeks for these Mathematics 2 extensions if your course requires that module.
June/July: Diagnostic mock. Identify weak modules. August–September: Content gap work — Isaac Physics for Physics depth, STEP Support materials for Mathematics 2. September–early October: Weekly timed full mocks. Final week: Full mock under exam conditions.

IB HL Physics covers the core content well — mechanics, electricity, waves, thermodynamics, and modern physics are all represented. The main gaps are in the depth of Newtonian mechanics in novel scenarios and the time-pressured format. IB Physics exams allow more time per question; ESAT Physics requires 89 seconds per question with no working shown. Dedicated timed practice from four months out is the essential preparation.
IB HL Maths AA covers Mathematics 1 very well. Mathematics 2 — required for Cambridge Engineering — extends into matrix operations beyond IB level, 3D vectors, and further calculus applications. Budget two to three weeks specifically for these extensions. IB HL Maths Applications and Interpretation has larger gaps across both modules.
Start at least four months before the October sitting — June or July of Year 12. Begin with a timed diagnostic mock to identify weak modules. Spend six to eight weeks on content gaps, then shift to weekly timed full papers. The calculator-free, time-pressured multiple-choice format is the main adjustment from IB exam style.
