Cambridge Engineering · Oxford Physics · Imperial · UCL — your complete overseas applicant guide
Book a Free ConsultationThe Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) is the principal admissions test for engineering and science applicants to the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford (from 2027 entry), Imperial College London, and UCL. If you are applying to any of these universities from outside the UK, this guide covers everything you need to know about registration, test centres, fees, and preparation.
Official requirements are published at esat-tmua.ac.uk. Always verify your specific course against the university's own admissions pages before registering.
The ESAT consists of five modules: Mathematics 1 (compulsory for all), Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics 2. You sit Mathematics 1 plus two additional modules matched to your course. Each module is 40 minutes and contains 27 multiple-choice questions. No calculator is permitted. Total test time: two hours.
The ESAT rewards deep scientific reasoning over rote recall. Questions present novel scenarios built on familiar concepts — a style that initially feels unfamiliar to students used to curriculum-driven exams. Official past papers are freely available at undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk.

The ESAT is delivered by Pearson VUE, which operates test centres in over 180 countries. You register via the UAT UK portal, then book your slot directly with Pearson VUE. Most major cities across the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, Africa, and the Americas have accessible centres. To confirm centre availability in your country, visit pearsonvue.com. The fee for candidates outside the UK and Republic of Ireland is £130 — book early as popular centres fill up quickly in October.
The ESAT does not report a single composite score — results are reported per paper (Mathematics 1, Physics, Chemistry, or Biology). Universities using ESAT set their own interpretation of raw scores. Cambridge has been using ESAT since 2024 and has noted that shortlisted Engineering candidates typically perform strongly on both Mathematics 1 and their chosen science paper.
For international students, the most effective improvement strategy after an initial baseline test is to identify which question types within each paper are causing the most errors. ESAT Mathematics 1 errors typically fall into two categories: mechanical errors under time pressure (solvable with more timed practice) or conceptual gaps (requiring targeted study of specific topics). Science paper errors often reflect curriculum differences — questions on topics simply not covered in your school syllabus — which require topic-by-topic gap filling before timed practice is useful.
Keep a written error log for every ESAT practice paper you sit. Record the question number, the topic, whether you had the right method but made an arithmetic error, or whether you did not know how to approach the question. After four to five papers, patterns in your errors will become clear and you can direct your remaining preparation time accordingly.
One-to-one specialist tutoring is particularly effective for ESAT preparation because the curriculum gaps facing international students are well-defined and addressable. A good ESAT tutor who understands your curriculum background — whether IB, AP, CBSE, or another international qualification — can identify exactly which topics you need to study and can focus your sessions on application and problem-solving rather than reteaching content you already know.

IB students: HL Physics and HL Chemistry cover most ESAT content but have gaps in Newtonian mechanics depth and certain atomic physics areas. HL Maths AA covers Mathematics 1 well; Mathematics 2 extends into vectors and calculus applications slightly beyond the HL syllabus.
AP students: AP Physics C (Mechanics and E&M) and AP Chemistry are good but not exact matches. You will need to supplement in areas like wave optics and some organic chemistry.
CBSE/ISC (India): Strong problem-solving foundation is an asset, but the reasoning-under-time-pressure format of multiple-choice questions requires specific practice. Class 12 Physics and Chemistry cover most content.
Whatever your background, start ESAT preparation at least four months before the October sitting — ideally June or July. See our full curriculum gap analysis at ESAT preparation resources.
4–6 months before: Sit a timed mock paper to diagnose weak modules. Do not skip this step.
3–4 months before: Fill content gaps between your curriculum and the ESAT specification. Use Isaac Physics (free) for Physics; past STEP papers for Maths 2 depth.
6–8 weeks before: Weekly timed full papers. Every wrong answer reviewed in detail. Build speed — 89 seconds per question average.
Final 2 weeks: Full mock sittings under exam conditions. Practise multiple-choice elimination strategy.
If you are also applying to Cambridge Mathematics or Computer Science, note you will need the TMUA instead of ESAT, plus STEP as an offer condition. See our complete guide to UK admissions tests for international students to confirm which tests apply to your courses.
The Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) is a 2-hour multiple-choice assessment required by the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford (from 2027 entry), Imperial College London, and UCL for engineering, natural sciences, physics, and biomedical science applicants. It tests Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology to degree-entry level. International students must sit the ESAT regardless of nationality — there is no exemption.
International students register through the UAT UK portal at esat-tmua.ac.uk. Registration opens 20 July 2026, with a deadline of 28 September 2026 for the October 2026 sitting. You then book a slot at a local Pearson VUE Professional Test Centre. Pearson VUE operates in over 180 countries. The test fee outside the UK and Republic of Ireland is £130. Students in China, Hong Kong, and Macau must sit on 12 or 13 October specifically.
We recommend starting at least four months before the test — typically June or July for an October sitting. Begin with a timed diagnostic mock to identify your weakest modules, then spend six to eight weeks on content review to fill any gaps between your curriculum and the ESAT specification. The final four to six weeks should focus on weekly timed papers and speed training. Students who start fewer than six weeks out consistently underperform relative to their academic ability.
