Cambridge Medicine, like Oxford, is a pre-clinical degree: the first three years are almost entirely basic science, and clinical training begins only in Year 4. Caius supervisors are assessing whether you will thrive in that environment — whether you have the scientific depth, the mathematical fluency, and the intellectual curiosity to engage with biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, and neuroscience at undergraduate level. You do not need undergraduate knowledge in these areas, but you should understand the A-level content thoroughly at a mechanistic level — being able to explain not just what happens but why, at the level of molecules and cells.
Practise interpreting experimental data. Caius Medicine interviews frequently involve graphs, tables, or brief descriptions of experimental results. You should be able to identify what a graph is showing, what the pattern suggests, what confounds or alternative explanations might be present, and what further experiment would help clarify the picture.
Engage with medical ethics at an accessible level. Caius supervisors do not expect formal knowledge of bioethics, but they do ask candidates to reason about ethical dilemmas. Being familiar with the four principles framework — autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice — and being able to apply it to novel scenarios is useful preparation.

Caius is one of the most distinguished medical colleges and receives a large volume of strong applications. UCAT performance is a significant shortlisting factor, and candidates with strong UCAT scores, excellent A-level predictions, and genuine scientific depth are those most likely to receive Caius interview invitations.
Cambridge does not publish specific UCAT cutoffs by college, but strong performance — typically placing you in the upper quartile of all UCAT sitters — significantly improves your chances. Section 2 is particularly important for Caius, which places great emphasis on scientific reasoning. A high Section 3 score (clear, nuanced writing) also differentiates strong candidates.
Work experience is expected as part of your application and should be reflected in your personal statement. In the interview itself, supervisors may ask you to reflect on what you observed, but what matters much more is your ability to reason scientifically. Candidates with extensive work experience but weak scientific thinking consistently underperform relative to those with strong scientific foundations and more limited clinical exposure.

Practise narrating your thought process — stating what you notice, what approach you are considering, what you are uncertain about — with unfamiliar questions from past UCAT papers, A-level biology and chemistry problems, and medical science resources.
