Imperial adopted the ESAT for 2026 entry. Here is what that means and how to prepare.
Imperial College London is a world-leading engineering university and a primary destination for international students pursuing undergraduate engineering in the UK. From 2026 entry, Imperial requires the ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test) for all undergraduate Engineering programmes. This aligns Imperial with Cambridge, which has required ESAT since 2024, and significantly affects how international applicants should prepare.
ESAT is required for the following Imperial College Engineering undergraduate programmes (2026 entry onwards):
Always confirm requirements on the Imperial College Engineering admissions page for your specific programme and entry year, as requirements can be updated between cycles.
The ESAT has one compulsory paper (Mathematics 1) and elective science/maths papers. Imperial's requirements are:
The ESAT test structure:
| Paper | Duration | Format | Topics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics 1 | 40 min | 27 MCQ | Algebra, calculus, sequences, logarithms, trigonometry |
| Physics | 40 min | 27 MCQ | Mechanics, electricity, waves, thermal, modern physics basics |
| Chemistry | 40 min | 27 MCQ | Atomic structure, bonding, energetics, equilibria, organic |
IB HL Physics is a strong foundation for the ESAT Physics paper, but specific gaps need addressing:
AP Physics C (Mechanics + E&M) is an excellent foundation for ESAT Physics mechanics and electromagnetism content. Key gaps are thermal physics (covered in AP Physics 2 but not AP Physics C) and wave optics. Students who have taken only AP Physics C should supplement with 4–6 weeks on thermal and wave topics before the ESAT.
CBSE Physics provides comprehensive electricity and wave coverage, which are strengths in the ESAT Physics paper. The key challenge for CBSE students is applying concepts in unfamiliar, multi-step problem formats. ESAT Physics questions rarely ask you to recall a formula directly — they present a novel physical situation and require you to identify which principle applies and how to combine it with geometry or algebra. This style is very different from CBSE board papers and requires specific practice with ESAT-format questions.
ESAT Mathematics 1 covers algebra, calculus, logarithms, trigonometry, sequences, and basic probability. IB HL Maths AA covers all this content well. The critical issue for IB students is speed: 27 questions in 40 minutes is under 90 seconds per question, which requires confident, fast application of techniques without pausing to reconstruct methods. Past ESAT Mathematics 1 papers and BMAT Section 2 papers (similar style) are the best preparation materials.
IB Maths AI HL students may need to supplement with additional pure algebra and calculus topics that receive less coverage in the AI syllabus. See our dedicated ESAT preparation page and ESAT for IB students guide for a full curriculum gap analysis.
The ESAT is sat in October at Pearson VUE centres worldwide. Registration typically opens in September for October sitting. The international registration fee is approximately £130. International students register directly with Pearson VUE — there is no school-based registration process. Early registration is recommended as centre capacity is limited in some countries. See also the UK admissions test costs guide for a full fee comparison.
One-to-one specialist tutoring makes a measurable difference for international students preparing for the ESAT for Imperial. The core challenge for most international applicants is not ability — it is unfamiliarity with the specific question style and the gaps between their school curriculum and what the test demands. A specialist tutor who knows both your curriculum and the test can compress months of self-directed preparation into targeted sessions focused on precisely what you need.
When selecting a tutor for the ESAT for Imperial, look for these qualities:
Leading Tuition's specialist tutors for the ESAT for Imperial preparation are recruited based on their own test scores (top 20% of candidates), their curriculum knowledge, and their track record with international students. Yes. From 2026 entry, Imperial College London requires the ESAT for all undergraduate Engineering programmes, including Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Aeronautical, Chemical, and Design Engineering. Applicants sit the compulsory Mathematics 1 paper plus Physics (or Chemistry for Chemical Engineering). Register at a Pearson VUE centre in your country — no need to travel to the UK.
Imperial College has not published a minimum ESAT score threshold. The test is used alongside your academic grades in the shortlisting process. Performing in the top third of ESAT candidates across all applicants is broadly considered competitive for Imperial. Cambridge, which has used ESAT since 2024, typically regards scores in the top quartile as strong.
Yes. ESAT is administered at Pearson VUE test centres worldwide, including across the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, East Asia, and North America. You register directly with Pearson VUE and pay the international registration fee of approximately £130. Check the Pearson VUE website for centre availability in your country.
The ESAT test itself is completely identical — it is the same papers administered at the same Pearson VUE centres in October. The difference is in how each university uses the scores. Cambridge has used ESAT since 2024 and has more published context on competitive ranges. Imperial adopted ESAT from 2026 entry. Both use it as a shortlisting tool alongside grades and personal statement.
ENGAA (Engineering Admissions Assessment) was a Cambridge-specific test replaced by ESAT in 2024. ESAT is more accessible for international students because it is computer-delivered at Pearson VUE centres worldwide rather than at registered school centres. The content structure is broadly similar — maths and science multiple-choice questions — but ESAT is administered by a third-party testing organisation rather than directly by Cambridge.
Leading Tuition provides specialist one-to-one tutoring for the ESAT for Imperial preparation, tailored specifically to your curriculum background — whether IB, AP, CBSE, or another international qualification. Our tutors have sat these tests themselves and achieved top scores: we only hire ESAT/TMUA tutors who scored in the top 20% of candidates.
