Pakistani students applying to UK medical schools sit the same UCAT as every other international applicant, but the qualification pathway that gets them to the test looks different from the route Indian, Bangladeshi, or Gulf-based applicants typically use. Pakistan’s Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) and Federal Board FSc Pre-Medical qualifications are not, on their own, accepted as a direct-entry route into UK medicine by several major medical schools — Cambridge, Aberdeen, and Edinburgh all say so explicitly on their own admissions pages. Most competitive Pakistani applicants instead sit Cambridge International or Edexcel A-Levels through English-medium schools, and a smaller group who train in the UK discover only later that returning home to practise requires a separate Pakistan Medical Commission licensing exam. This guide covers UCAT test centres in Pakistan, the real qualification-equivalency picture for medicine specifically, the 2026 UCAT format, English-language and visa evidence, and what happens if you plan to return to Pakistan to practise.

Can Pakistani Students Sit the UCAT in Pakistan?

Yes. The UCAT Consortium states that the test is delivered “in Pearson test centres across the UK and in 130+ countries worldwide” (ucat.ac.uk, 2026 eligibility guidance). Pearson VUE’s presence in Pakistan is concentrated in three major cities — Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad — a much narrower footprint than the 40+ cities available to Indian candidates or the dozens available across the Gulf. If you live outside these three metro areas, factor travel and, potentially, overnight accommodation into your test-day planning well ahead of booking.

For the 2026 cycle (results feeding 2027 UK medicine entry), UCAT registration opens 20 May 2026 at 14:00 UK time; the booking window runs from 23 June 2026 to 16 September 2026; and the testing window itself runs from 13 July 2026 to 24 September 2026. The fee for sittings outside the UK is £115 — roughly ₨42,800 at mid-2026 GBP/PKR exchange rates of around 372. Because Pakistan is not explicitly named on the UCAT Consortium’s OnVUE (remote-proctored) eligibility page, do not assume online testing is automatically available — check your account’s specific eligibility once booking opens, and default to planning for an in-person Pearson VUE sitting in Karachi, Lahore, or Islamabad. See our UCAT test centres country guide for how Pakistan compares with other South Asian markets.

Does HSSC or FSc Qualify You for UK Medicine — Or Do You Need A-Levels?

This is the single biggest structural difference between the Pakistani pathway into UK medicine and, for example, the Indian CBSE/ISC pathway. Cambridge’s own international entry requirements page states, in its own words, that applicants presenting only the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSC)/Intermediatewill not be competitive and are unlikely to be successful” if they apply on that qualification alone. Cambridge recommends one of: A-Levels, the International Baccalaureate, five or more Advanced Placement (AP) tests at Score 5 (combined with an overall HSSC/Intermediate result of 990–1100), or a completed first year of undergraduate study at a university outside the UK.

The pattern repeats at other medical schools. The University of Aberdeen’s Medicine programme requires “GCE A-levels, International Baccalaureate or Scottish Highers” — HSSC alone does not meet direct-entry criteria, and Aberdeen’s general Foundation pathway (for non-Medicine science routes) does not substitute for this. The University of Edinburgh is more direct still: its country guidance for Pakistan states that applicants presenting only Pakistani national qualifications are directed toward a Foundation Year rather than direct undergraduate entry, because Edinburgh “does not currently accept the above national qualification for direct entry to undergraduate study.”

It is worth separating two things Pakistani families sometimes conflate. The Inter Boards Coordination Commission (IBCC) — Pakistan’s own domestic equivalency body — treats O-Levels as equivalent to the Matric/SSC and A-Levels as equivalent to the HSSC, provided the candidate has also passed Urdu, Islamiyat, and Pakistan Studies at O-Level. That is a Pakistan-internal recognition framework for progressing within the Pakistani system (or applying to Pakistani universities such as NUST). It is entirely separate from how individual UK medical schools independently assess FSc/HSSC applicants for medicine — and, as the Cambridge, Aberdeen, and Edinburgh examples show, that UK-side assessment is considerably stricter than IBCC’s domestic equivalency.

How Does the 2026 UCAT Format Change Affect Pakistani Applicants?

The UCAT changed significantly for 2026 test-takers, and Pakistani students researching older forum threads or outdated guides may be working from the wrong benchmarks. Abstract Reasoning has been removed entirely, leaving three scored cognitive sections — Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, and Quantitative Reasoning — each scaled from 300 to 900, for a maximum cognitive score of 2,700, not the old 3,600-point figure still quoted on many older guides. The Situational Judgement Test remains separate, reported in Bands 1 to 4 rather than as a numerical score. When comparing your practice scores or an older cut-off you find online against 2026-entry requirements, always check which scale the figure is quoted on before drawing conclusions.

What UCAT Score Do Pakistani Students Need for UK Medicine Interviews?

Only approximately 500 UK medicine places per year are available to international students, against roughly 7,100 for UK-domiciled applicants — Pakistani students compete in this same limited international pool alongside applicants from every other country. As a competitive baseline, aim for a total cognitive UCAT score above 2,300; for Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, and Imperial, aim for 2,500 or above. A Situational Judgement Band 1 or 2 is expected by most schools that publish a preference. See our UCAT cut-offs guide for university-by-university trends.

Preparing for the Situational Judgement Test Without NHS Exposure

The Situational Judgement Test (SJT) tests NHS-specific professional values — patient safety, professional boundaries, honesty about mistakes, and teamwork within a UK clinical hierarchy that most Pakistani applicants have never encountered directly, since Pakistan’s own healthcare system (public, private, and armed-forces hospital networks) is structured differently from the NHS. Read the NHS Constitution and the GMC’s Good Medical Practice guidance before your first SJT mock, and follow UK healthcare news to build context. Once you understand NHS priorities — patient safety first, transparency about error, respect for patient autonomy — SJT answers become far more predictable. See our SJT guide for international students for a full section-by-section framework.

Are Pakistani Students Exempt From UK Student Visa English Language Requirements?

No. UK Immigration Rules Appendix English Language lists only 18 majority-English-speaking nationalities exempt from providing separate English evidence for a Student visa: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, British Overseas Territories, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Malta, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the USA. Pakistan is not on this list — nor is India, Bangladesh, or most other South Asian countries — so most Pakistani applicants must demonstrate proficiency through a Secure English Language Test (commonly IELTS for UKVI) or through a prior qualification independently assessed as equivalent and confirmed as taught and examined in English.

This is where the A-Level-versus-FSc/HSSC distinction resurfaces in a second, practical way. Cambridge International and Edexcel A-Levels sat in Pakistan are examined entirely in English by a UK-based awarding body, which generally makes the English-medium-instruction case more straightforward to evidence. FSc and HSSC, by contrast, are taught in a mixed Urdu/English medium that varies by board and province, which can make an equivalent English-language exemption argument harder to construct — in practice, most FSc/HSSC applicants should plan to sit IELTS or an equivalent test rather than relying on qualification-based exemption.

Which UK Medical Schools Are Realistic for Pakistani Applicants?

Pakistan is a significant and growing source market for UK higher education generally: 34,690 Pakistani students were enrolled at UK institutions in 2022/23, a 50% year-on-year increase, and Pakistani student demand for the UK grew a further 30%+ between January and June 2024 compared with the same period in 2023 (British Council/ICEF Monitor market data). Punjab is the single largest source region, reflecting long-established family and education-agent networks into the UK. A further 11,715 students based in Pakistan take UK qualifications through transnational education (mostly distance and online models) without ever leaving the country — useful context, though it does not translate into published per-medical-school Pakistani intake figures, which UK universities do not break out publicly.

Absent school-by-school Pakistani-specific admissions data, apply the same realistic-shortlist logic international applicants use generally: avoid spending all four UCAS choices on the most selective international quotas (Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial, Barts all sit at the top of UCAT competitiveness for international applicants). With a UCAT score around 2,300–2,400 and strong A-Level or IB predicted grades, a balanced Pakistani applicant shortlist might include one high-reach school, two mid-tier schools with a track record of shortlisting strong international UCAT scorers (Keele, Exeter, Aberdeen, and Dundee are commonly cited in this tier), and one school with a more transparent international selection process, such as Hull York Medical School. See our UCAT international students guide and UK medicine for international students guide for the full shortlist framework.

Fees, Visa Costs, and the GBP/PKR Reality for Pakistani Families

UK medicine is a five- to six-year commitment, and international fees are charged in full every year with no home-fee cap. International tuition fees for medicine vary substantially by university:

University Approx. annual international medicine fee
University of LeicesterFrom around £30,150 (rises in clinical years)
University of BirminghamFrom around £30,330 (rises in clinical years)
University of SouthamptonFrom around £32,000 (rises in clinical years)
UCLAround £57,300
Imperial College LondonAround £58,600

Over a five- to six-year MBBS course, total tuition alone can range from roughly £230,000 to well over £350,000 before living costs — worth weighing against UCAT competitiveness, since a realistic mid-tier school is often considerably cheaper as well as easier to enter than a reach school.

Beyond tuition, Pakistani applicants need to budget for the Student route visa: as of 2026, the visa application fee is £558, and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) — a mandatory upfront NHS-access payment — is charged at £776 per year of the course, paid in full at the time of visa application. For a six-year MBBS, that IHS lump sum alone is a substantial upfront figure to include in your funds-available calculation, not just your annual budget.

Currency movement is a genuine planning factor rather than background noise: as of mid-2026, GBP/PKR has been trading around 372, and the rupee has weakened considerably against sterling over recent years. Because exchange rates fluctuate, Pakistani families are generally better served locking in transfers or using forward contracts for known upcoming payments — tuition instalments, the IHS lump sum, deposits — rather than assuming today’s rate will hold across a six-year commitment.

Planning to Return to Pakistan? The PMDC Exam After UK Medical School

This is the piece of the puzzle most generic international UCAT guides never mention, because it only matters if you plan to work in Pakistan eventually. The Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC) requires all foreign medical graduates — including UK-trained, GMC-registered doctors — to pass the National Registration Examination (NRE) before they can obtain a full licence to practise in Pakistan. PMDC’s own press materials are explicit that this mirrors international norms, comparing the NRE directly to the UK’s own PLAB test for overseas doctors entering UK practice, and to the USMLE in the United States. Eligibility to sit the NRE is restricted to graduates of institutions PMDC recognises — cross-checked against the ECFMG-accredited World Directory of Medical Schools, in which every GMC-approved UK medical school appears — and the exam is scheduled periodically (most recently November 2025).

The practical implication: a UK medical degree and GMC registration are not automatically portable into Pakistani practice rights. If returning home eventually is part of your plan — even a distant, undecided part — factor NRE preparation into your post-graduation timeline the same way you would factor UCAT preparation into your UCAS timeline now. It is a separate, additional step, not a formality.

What Is a Realistic UCAT Preparation Timeline for Pakistani Students?

Most FSc/HSSC students without prior A-Level or IB exposure to English-medium timed multiple-choice assessment should plan for 8–12 weeks of structured UCAT preparation, starting with a full diagnostic mock across all sections. A-Level and IB-educated Pakistani students, who are already used to timed English-language assessment, can often work in a tighter 6–8 week window, with preparation focused more on UCAT-specific pacing than on English comprehension. In both cases, start Situational Judgement preparation from week one rather than leaving it until the end — it draws on NHS-specific knowledge that has to be built from scratch regardless of academic background. Use our week-by-week UCAT revision roadmap to structure your remaining weeks before the 2026 test window closes on 24 September.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Pakistani students sit the UCAT in Pakistan?

Yes. The UCAT is delivered through the Pearson VUE Professional Centre network, which the UCAT Consortium describes as operating “in Pearson test centres across the UK and in 130+ countries worldwide” (ucat.ac.uk, 2026). Pakistan's Pearson VUE presence is concentrated in three cities — Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad — far fewer than the 40+ cities available to Indian candidates, so plan travel well ahead. The 2026 fee for sittings outside the UK is £115 (roughly ₨42,800 at mid-2026 rates). Booking for 2026 opens 23 June and the testing window runs 13 July to 24 September 2026 — confirm your nearest centre as soon as booking opens, since slots fill quickly.

Does HSSC or FSc alone qualify a Pakistani student for UK medicine?

Generally, no — the biggest difference from, say, the Indian CBSE/ISC pathway. Cambridge's international entry requirements page states that applicants with only the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC)/Intermediate “will not be competitive and are unlikely to be successful,” recommending A-Levels, the IB, five or more AP tests at grade 5 (plus HSSC 990–1100), or a first year of foreign undergraduate study instead. Aberdeen's Medicine programme requires “GCE A-levels, International Baccalaureate or Scottish Highers,” and Edinburgh does not currently accept Pakistani national qualifications for direct entry. Most competitive Pakistani applicants sit Cambridge International or Edexcel A-Levels rather than relying on FSc/HSSC alone.

Are Pakistani students exempt from proving English proficiency for a UK student visa?

No. UK Immigration Rules Appendix English Language lists only 18 majority-English-speaking nationalities exempt from providing separate evidence — Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, British Overseas Territories, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Malta, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the USA. Pakistan is not on that list, so most Pakistani applicants need a Secure English Language Test (commonly IELTS for UKVI) unless their prior qualification was taught and independently assessed as equivalent and delivered in English — which makes English-medium A-Levels a smoother route than FSc/HSSC, taught in mixed Urdu/English medium depending on the board.

What UCAT score do Pakistani students need for UK medicine interviews?

Only around 500 UK medicine places per year are available to international students, against roughly 7,100 for UK-domiciled applicants, so Pakistani students compete in a small, high-calibre pool. Following the 2026 format change (Abstract Reasoning removed, three cognitive sections each scaled 300–900), aim for a total cognitive score above 2,300 as a competitive baseline — 2,500 or higher for Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, and Imperial. A Situational Judgement Band 1 or 2 is expected by most schools. See our UCAT cut-offs guide for university-by-university benchmarks.

Do UK-trained Pakistani doctors need another exam to practise medicine in Pakistan?

Yes. The Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC) requires all foreign medical graduates — including UK-trained doctors — to pass the National Registration Examination (NRE) before obtaining a full licence to practise in Pakistan. Eligibility is restricted to graduates of institutions on PMDC's recognised list, cross-checked against the ECFMG-accredited World Directory of Medical Schools; PMDC's own press materials compare the NRE directly to the UK's PLAB test for overseas doctors and the US's USMLE. If your long-term plan is to return home, a GMC licence from a UK medical degree is not, on its own, sufficient — budget time for the NRE alongside your UK training.
