Barnet providers made 855 A-level Biology exam entries in 2024/25, and 19 of the 28 with a published Department for Education Biology score name AQA as their board. For 398 of those providers’ 824 scored students (48.3%), DfE’s own test cannot tell the cohort’s score from zero. Each sixth form’s published board and GCSE grades sit beside that score below.
Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students across Barnet work to the board and papers their own sixth form enters, at any of the 33 providers with a Biology row in the DfE data.
Which sixth forms count as Barnet, and how many students sit A-level Biology there?
Barnet is its own local authority, code 302, so the Department for Education’s sweep of that authority and the borough are one list of providers. A sixth form registered just over the boundary belongs to another authority’s rows and is not counted here, however close it stands. DfE’s data holds 38 school locations for Barnet. Of these, 33 have an A-level Biology row for 2024/25: 28 with a published score and 5 marked c, DfE’s code for a figure it has withheld.
Compare School and College Performance, DfE’s results service for schools and colleges, records 855 A-level Biology exam entries across Barnet providers for the same year, and Woodhouse College made 206 of them (24.1%). The Compare list and the DfE list differ by one provider at each end. Tiferes High School has a suppressed DfE row and no Compare page we could open, while Menorah Grammar School has one Biology entry on Compare and no DfE row.
DfE labels its count Number of entries. Biology is sat once by almost every student, so entries and students are close to the same count, and this page says students. The DfE count also sits close to each provider’s own Compare total: equal at 17 of the 28 scored providers and lower by 1 to 4 at the other 11. Our A-level Maths page for Barnet explains why the two can differ, and this page does not repeat it.
The size of the cohorts matters more than the count of providers. Of the 28 scored cohorts, 14 have fewer than 20 students, 190 in all, and the other 14 hold 634.
What do Barnet’s sixth forms publish about the board and the GCSE grades for A-level Biology?
The table below reads each provider’s own pages, not a directory or a tutoring site. Where a page names a board or a GCSE grade for Biology, the cell says so and links to the page. Where we did not find one, the cell says so, which is a statement about our search on 29 September 2026 and never a statement about the school. Providers are sorted by the size of their scored cohort, largest first, and the order is not a ranking.
St Mary's and St John's CofE SchoolThe DfE row is filed under URN 103119, which closed on 31 August 2025 on conversion to an academy. The successor, URN 151504, opened on 1 September 2025 under the same DfE number, 302/3521. Board and grades are from the school's current site.
Fewer than 20 students in the year, or more than 200? Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students across Barnet at sixth forms of every size, working from the student’s own board, papers and mock results.
Source: each provider’s own published pages, linked in the table, read on 29 September 2026. Students are DfE’s Number of entries for A-level Biology, 2024/25. A date in brackets is the year or entry the source names; other sources carry no date.
The board
AQA is named on the own pages of 19 of the 28 scored providers, and those 19 hold 587 of the 824 scored students (71.2%). OCR is named by 4 providers (115 students, 14.0%) and Edexcel by 1 (39 students, 4.7%). For 4 providers (83 students, 10.1%) we found no board on the pages we read. Naming a board is not the same as naming the paper. Where a page gives a specification name or code the table shows it, and the Edexcel entry, Barnet and Southgate College, gives the board without either, so a student there should ask the department which paper they are sitting. Our page on Edexcel A-level Biology sets out what that board’s specification covers, and the A-level Biology page compares all four boards.
The GCSE grades
Of the 28 scored providers, 23 publish a condition specific to Biology. At 16 of them (533 students) every route we found asks for at least one grade 7. At 7 (109 students) there is a route that needs only 6s or 5s. A further 3 providers (118 students) publish a general sixth-form rule and no Biology line, and for 2 (64 students) we found no condition.
Some conditions depend on the rest of a timetable. Woodhouse College states 7-6 in Combined Science if Biology is the only science A level and 7-7 if it is taken alongside another. JCoSS states grade 8s in the GCSE Biology modules and a 7 in Maths if Biology is taken without another science or maths. Queen Elizabeth’s School states on its admissions page that it does not accept external students into its Sixth Form, so there is no external entry condition to look for at a school whose cohort was 51 students.
The dates matter as much as the grades. The sources run from a 2024-2026 course guide to a 2027-28 brochure, and a school can change its conditions between cycles, so the table is a way to know what to ask and not a substitute for the current page.

What does DfE’s Biology score say for the students in Barnet’s 28 scored cohorts?
DfE’s value-added measure shows how well students did in a qualification compared with other students nationally who had similar prior attainment, and DfE publishes each provider’s score with a 95% interval. Its technical guidance calls a score statistically significant when the score and the relevant end of that interval sit on the same side of 0: both above, or both below. This page calls that clearing zero. The same guidance says a school or college is not the only influence on its students’ attainment, and that confidence intervals are used to capture the uncertainty in the measure.
Counted by provider, 9 of the 28 scores clear zero, 6 above and 3 below. Counted by student the result reads differently, because the providers are different sizes. The 6 providers wholly above zero hold 347 of the 824 scored students (42.1%), the 3 wholly below hold 79 (9.6%), and the 19 whose interval spans zero hold 398 (48.3%). For almost half of the 824 scored students, the published score says nothing in either direction.

The width of an interval follows the size of the cohort. In the 28 rows we queried, the 11 providers that share an entry count (51, 21, 14, 13 or 9) have intervals of the same width to within 0.01, and across all 28 the width falls as the entry count rises, with no exception. That describes these published numbers. It is not a claim about how DfE calculates them. Of the 14 cohorts under 20 students, 2 clear zero, and of the 14 with 20 or more, 7 do.

Confidence and progress
My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!
We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Great Teaching and Focused Learning
I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.
A score whose interval spans zero has no finding attached to it in DfE’s terms. It has not been shown to be average, and it has not been shown to be low. No board or GCSE grade in the table above is set against a score below, and that is deliberate: value added already compares students with similar prior attainment, so this page does not read a score as the effect of an entry condition.

Why do five Barnet providers have no Biology score?
DfE publishes c in place of a score, an interval and an entry count for five Barnet providers in Biology. Four of them have a page on Compare, and those pages record 1, 2, 3 and 4 A-level Biology entries. The smallest cohort that does carry a score has 7. Compare’s own key says data is usually suppressed when there are 5 or fewer pupils or students covered by the measure, which fits those counts. Suppression says the cohort was small. It says nothing about the teaching.
Source: DfE institution-level data for suppression; Compare School and College Performance for entry counts; each school’s own pages for board and grades; Get Information about Schools for register status; all read on 29 September 2026. Nothing is claimed here about whether Imperial College London Mathematics School or Mount House School teach Biology.
Three quirks in the register are worth knowing before you search for a school by name. The St Mary’s and St John’s CofE School row in the tables above is filed under URN 103119, which the Get Information about Schools register records as closed on 31 August 2025 on conversion to an academy. Its successor, URN 151504, opened on 1 September 2025 under the same DfE number, 302/3521. Tiferes High School is recorded as 11 to 16 with no sixth form yet has a suppressed row, so a DfE row does not by itself show a sixth form. Menorah Grammar School has one Biology entry on Compare and no DfE row, so a missing row does not show that no student sat the exam. Compare also says it will close soon, with a new service from autumn 2026, so the links and figures here were read on 29 September 2026.
How do we tutor A-level Biology for Barnet students?
Every programme starts from the board the student’s own sixth form names. Where the table above shows AQA, OCR or Edexcel, our expert A-level Biology tutors work through that board’s past papers and mark schemes. Where a sixth form has published nothing we could find, the first session establishes the specification from the student’s class notes and mock results before any content is planned.
Sessions are one-to-one and online, on a shared whiteboard, using the student’s own past-paper answers and the real mark scheme. Progress is reviewed against the student’s target grade at agreed points, and parents receive notes after each lesson. For a Year 11 student working towards a sixth form’s published grade, our GCSE tuition in Barnet covers the science courses.
The paper structure, the practical endorsement and the grade boundaries are the same for every student on a board, so they are set out once on our A-level Biology page and not repeated here. For the wider Barnet picture, including whole-school A-level progress scores, see our guide to A-level tuition in Barnet. Our national Biology tutoring service covers the subject beyond Barnet.
A published grade, a named paper, a small cohort. Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students across Barnet with all three, whichever of the 33 providers they attend.
Which exam board do Barnet sixth forms use for A-level Biology?
Of the 28 Barnet providers with a published DfE Biology score for 2024/25, 19 name AQA on their own pages, 4 name OCR and 1 names Edexcel. For 4 we found no board on the pages we read on 29 September 2026. The 19 AQA providers hold 587 of the 824 scored students. Only some pages give a specification code, such as AQA 7402 or OCR H420, so a student should confirm the paper with their own department.
What GCSE grade do you need to start A-level Biology in Barnet?
It depends on the sixth form. Of the 23 scored providers that publish a Biology-specific condition, 16 ask for at least one grade 7 on every route we found, for example 7 in Biology or 7-7 in Combined Science, and 7 publish a route that needs only 6s or 5s. Woodhouse College asks for 7-6 in Combined Science if Biology is the only science A level and 7-7 if it is taken alongside another. Sources are dated between 2024 and 2027, so check the year of entry.
Can a student from another school join Queen Elizabeth's School sixth form for A-level Biology?
Queen Elizabeth's School states on its admissions page that it does not accept external students into its Sixth Form. Its A-level Biology cohort in 2024/25 was 51 students in DfE's data. We found no A-level Biology board or GCSE grade for the school on the pages we read, which is a statement about our search and not about the school.
Does DfE's Biology score say anything for most Barnet students?
For 398 of the 824 scored students (48.3%), no: their provider's 95% interval spans zero, so DfE's own test does not call the score a finding in either direction. The 6 providers wholly above zero hold 347 students (42.1%) and the 3 wholly below hold 79 (9.6%). The score is DfE's value-added progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and not a measure of teaching quality.
Why is a Barnet sixth form missing from the Biology score table?
Five Barnet providers have a suppressed Biology row, shown as c. Compare records 1, 2, 3 and 4 A-level Biology entries at the four that have a page, and the smallest scored cohort has 7. Compare's key says data is usually suppressed at 5 or fewer pupils or students. A missing score therefore points to a small cohort. It does not show that a school lacks A-level Biology, and a school can have Compare entries but no DfE row, as Menorah Grammar School does with one.
Is St Mary's and St John's CofE School still open?
Yes, under a new URN. The Get Information about Schools register records URN 103119 as closed on 31 August 2025 on conversion to an academy, and URN 151504 as open from 1 September 2025 under the same DfE number, 302/3521. DfE's 2024/25 Biology row of 24 entries is filed under the closed URN, so a register search by that number finds a closed school. The board and grades on this page come from the school's current site.
Which specification does Barnet and Southgate College use for A-level Biology?
The college's 2026 A Level Guide lists Biology under Edexcel and gives no specification name or code. We found no Biology-specific GCSE grade. The guide's criteria for maths and sciences are five grade 5s or above and a grade 6 in a relevant subject. The college had 39 scored Biology entries in 2024/25.
How does Leading Tuition tutor A-level Biology for Barnet students?
