Pearson Edexcel examines A-Level Biology through two separate, currently accredited specifications: Biology A (Salters-Nuffield, 9BN0) and Biology B (9BI0), both confirmed “Available to learners” on Ofqual’s register at Issue 4, November 2018. 9BN0 or 9BI0: Which Specification Is Your Child Actually Sitting?

Pearson Edexcel publishes Biology A and Biology B as two entirely separate qualifications — not two flavours of one course. Each has its own specification PDF, its own course-materials page and its own news feed on Pearson’s website, and each carries its own Ofqual Qualification Number. The specification’s own Appendix 3 “Codes” table states the QN and entry code together: for Biology A, “The QN for the qualification in this publication is: 601/5299/0” against subject code 9BN0; for Biology B, QN 601/5301/5 against subject code 9BI0.

Both entries are visible directly on Ofqual’s own register — 601/5299/0 for Biology A and 601/5301/5 for Biology B — and independently confirm both A-level QNs directly, in the regulator’s own words: status “Available to learners”, national availability “England, International”, operational start date 1 September 2015, and 360 guided learning hours for each. Pearson’s own live qualification pages for both routes — Biology A and Biology B — list first teaching 2015, first assessment 2017, and carry an active “September 2026 Teaching Science update” dated 3 September 2026, with no withdrawal notice on either page — both routes are current, not one live and one closing.

The AS awards are separate, decoupled qualifications rather than a staging post within the A-level, each with its own QN: 601/5298/9 for AS Biology A and 601/5300/3 for AS Biology B, both also confirmed “Available to learners” in Ofqual’s register extract. One code we are not publishing here: a sibling page on this site names AS entry codes 8BN0 and 8BI0, but a full-text search of both current A-level specification PDFs finds neither string anywhere in the extractable text, so this page states the AS QNs from the register instead of guessing an entry code its own sources do not confirm.

On availability outside England: Ofqual’s register states “National availability: England, International” for both qualifications, with no Wales entry. That is the regulator’s own wording, not a conclusion this page draws — Ofqual regulates qualifications in England, not Wales, so an absence from its register does not prove a qualification is unavailable there. Neither Pearson specification states a jurisdiction sentence of its own, so this page reports only what the register itself says.

What Each Paper Actually Tests, Topic by Topic

Edexcel’s own specifications name every topic each paper draws on — detail neither route’s SERP competitors nor this site’s parent comparison page sets out. Biology A is assessed across three equal papers, each 33.33% of the qualification:

Paper 3’s pre-released article is worth noting on its own: Pearson states “A scientific article will be pre-released on our website 8 weeks before the examination”, and that article “will underpin one section of the paper” — a fixed, knowable window a student can work through line by line before sitting the paper.

Biology B is structured differently — three papers of unequal length and weighting, rather than three equal thirds:

Paper 3 on Biology B carries a genuine practical-skills weighting worth flagging carefully, because the fullest statement of it does not come from the current main specification. A Pearson assessment-overview document — still live on Pearson’s own site today, listed under the Biology A qualification page’s teaching materials — states that “Half of the paper will focus on testing students’ knowledge and understanding of practical skills and techniques.” That document’s own running header reads “Issue 1 — December 2014”, an older edition than the current Issue 4 (November 2018) specification, which does not repeat that exact sentence in its own Paper 3 description. The paper’s marks, duration and 40% weighting are independently confirmed in the current Issue 4 document itself; the “half the paper” framing specifically is carried over from the older, still-published document, and is stated here with that provenance attached rather than as a current-specification quote.

One requirement is identical, word for word, across both routes: Edexcel’s specification states “Overall, a minimum of 10% of the marks across the three papers will be awarded for mathematics at Level 2 or above” — the same sentence appears under each paper in both the Biology A and Biology B documents. Pearson Calls Them Core Practicals — 18 on Biology A, 16 on Biology B, and Only 12 Have to Count

“How many practicals” has a different answer depending whether the question means taught or evidenced, and that distinction is exactly the kind of thing a parent gets wrong. Edexcel’s own term is “core practicals”: Biology A’s specification states students “are expected to carry out the 18 core practical experiments that are identified in the content”, forming “a thread linking theoretical knowledge and understanding to practical scenarios”, and adds that “the 18 core practicals will provide the basis from which some of the Paper 3 examination questions will be drawn.” Biology B’s identical wording sets the figure at 16 rather than 18.

But the number that actually gates the Science Practical Endorsement is smaller than either count. Edexcel’s specification is explicit: “evidence must be provided for the 12 practical techniques listed in Appendix 5c through a minimum of 12 core practical activities” — identical wording confirmed in both the Biology A and Biology B documents. So a Biology A student is taught 18 core practicals across the two-year course but only needs evidence from a minimum of 12 of them for the endorsement itself; a Biology B student is taught 16 and needs the same minimum of 12. The gap between “taught” and “evidenced” is six practicals on Biology A and four on Biology B — and it is the evidenced 12, not the taught 18 or 16, that a school actually has to certify.

The Science Practical Endorsement: Its Own Paper Code, Judged Pass or Not Classified

Edexcel’s own name for this component is the “Science Practical Endorsement”, and its specification gives it its own paper code on each route: “Science Practical Endorsement** *Paper code: 9BN0/04 Internally assessed and externally monitored by Pearson Edexcel” on Biology A, and the equivalent “Paper code: 9BI0/04” on Biology B. It is compulsory, it is separately certificated, and it never touches the A-level grade: Pearson’s specification states “Students who demonstrate the required standard across all the requirements of the CPAC will receive a ‘pass’ grade”, and that “The Endorsement will not contribute to the overall grade for this qualification, but the result will be recorded on the student’s certificate.” There is no partial credit between Pass and Not Classified.

The criteria that decide Pass or Not Classified are not Edexcel’s own invention, and Edexcel’s specification says so verbatim: practical work “will be assessed by teachers, using common practical assessment criteria (CPAC) that are consistent across exam boards”, and the monitoring visits that check a centre is applying CPAC correctly “will be coordinated across the exam boards by JCQ, to ensure that all centres are visited regularly.” That is a genuinely shared national framework, not something that happens to read similarly to what other boards publish. The five competencies students are judged against are named in full in Edexcel’s own appendix: following written procedures; applying investigative approaches and methods when using instruments and equipment; safely using a range of practical equipment and materials; making and recording observations; and researching, referencing and reporting. The first reads, in Edexcel’s own words, “Correctly follows written instructions to carry out the experimental techniques or procedures”; the second, “Correctly uses appropriate instrumentation, apparatus and materials (including ICT) to carry out investigative activities, experimental techniques and procedures with minimal assistance or prompting.”

What is genuinely Edexcel’s own, underneath that shared framework, is the list of core practicals a student is taught against — 18 named practicals on Biology A, 16 on Biology B, set out earlier on this page. Is Any of Edexcel A-Level Biology Optional?

No — on either route, and this was checked directly rather than assumed. Biology A sets eight compulsory topics: Lifestyle, Health and Risk; Genes and Health; Voice of the Genome; Biodiversity and Natural Resources; On the Wild Side; Immunity, Infection and Forensics; Run for your Life; and Grey Matter. Biology B sets ten: Biological Molecules; Cells, Viruses and Reproduction of Living Things; Classification and Biodiversity; Exchange and Transport; Energy for Biological Processes; Microbiology and Pathogens; Modern Genetics; Origins of Genetic Variation; Control Systems; and Ecosystems. None on either list is marked optional, and none has an alternative.

A full-text search of both complete, current specification PDFs — 183,911 extracted characters for Biology A, 135,739 for Biology B — for the words “option” and “choice of” returns no matches describing Biology content in either document. The only “choose” language in either specification concerns the separate Extended Project Qualification, which lets students “choose from one of four approaches to produce: a dissertation … an investigation/field study … a performance … an artefact” — a different, stand-alone Pearson qualification, not A-level Biology content.

Both routes are also confirmed linear: Pearson’s guidance on progressing from AS to the full A-level states that once the additional topics are covered, “all the assessment for the Advanced GCE qualification must be taken at the end of the course” — identical wording in both specifications. Neither document sets a formal entry requirement either: “There are no prior learning or other requirements for this qualification”, though Pearson recommends a Level 2 qualification such as GCSE Additional Science or Biology as useful preparation.

Is Edexcel A-Level Biology one specification or two?

Two, and they are separately accredited. Pearson Edexcel’s own qualification pages list Biology A (Salters-Nuffield), entry code 9BN0, Ofqual QN 601/5299/0, and Biology B, entry code 9BI0, QN 601/5301/5, as two distinct qualifications, each with its own specification document, course materials and update feed. Is the CPAC framework Edexcel’s own?

No. Edexcel’s specification states its practical work is assessed “using common practical assessment criteria (CPAC) that are consistent across exam boards”, and that monitoring visits to centres “will be coordinated across the exam boards by JCQ”. In the 2015 reform wave. A UK government summary of the reform states new AS and A-levels, including biology, “to be taught from: September 2015”, with first AS results in Summer 2016 and first A-level results in Summer 2017, and that “AS and A levels will be decoupled — this means that AS results will no longer count towards an A level.” That is different from the Maths and Further Maths reform, which decoupled a year later in 2017; a family checking dates for a sibling taking Maths should not assume the same year applies to Biology.

Is Edexcel A-Level Biology available in Wales?

Ofqual’s own register states the national availability of both Edexcel A-level Biology qualifications as “England, International” — it does not list Wales. That is the regulator’s own wording, not this page’s conclusion: Ofqual regulates qualifications in England, not Wales, so an absence from its register is not proof a qualification is unavailable there. Families in Wales should confirm directly with Qualifications Wales or the school, rather than reading a gap in the English regulator’s register as a definitive answer either way.
