Thirty-one Barnet providers return an A-level Physics row in DfE's 2024/25 value-added data, and 22 carry a published score covering 621 matched entries. Woodhouse College holds 127 of them. The providers differ most in the maths they ask of a Physics student. At 11 whose Physics and Biology entry lines both state a GCSE Maths grade, Physics never asks for less, and at four it asks for a grade more.

That comparison is the finding this page is built around, and it is not in any table DfE publishes. It comes from each provider's own entry conditions, read for Physics and for Biology side by side, with the documents linked below. DfE's value-added table answers a different question, and for most Barnet providers it answers it less firmly than a parent would hope.

Which Barnet providers enter A-level Physics, and what kind of provider is each?

Barnet is its own local authority, code 302, so a sweep of the authority is a sweep of the borough. Thirty-eight Barnet providers appear in the 2024/25 dataset and 31 of them return an A-level Physics row. Twenty-two carry a published value-added score. Nine are suppressed, meaning the matched cohort was too small for DfE to publish a figure: Clarion, Bishop Douglass School Finchley, Menorah Grammar School, Hasmonean High School for Girls, Mount House School, Queen Elizabeth's Girls' School, St Andrew the Apostle Greek Orthodox School, Saracens High School and The King Alfred School. None of the 38 providers' Get Information About Schools records carries a link to a sixth form centre, so no row repeats another's students.

The 22 are not variations on one kind of school. One is a 16 to 19 academy, Woodhouse College. One is a further education college, Barnet and Southgate College, and one is a 16 to 19 free school, Imperial College London Mathematics School. Two are independent: Brampton College and Mill Hill School Foundation. The other 17 are state-funded schools with sixth forms, three of which, Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet, The Henrietta Barnett School and St Michael's Catholic Grammar School, are recorded as Selective on GIAS. The entries are concentrated: Woodhouse alone holds 127 of the 621, about one in five, and no other provider holds more than 62.

St Mary's and St John's CofE School needs a note. Its DfE row is filed under URN 103119, which GIAS shows as closed on 31 August 2025 on conversion to an academy; the school is open under URN 151504 from 1 September 2025. Only its record changed.

One qualification belongs with every figure in the table. A value-added score is DfE's progress measure for one cohort in one year: it compares the 2024/25 leavers' grades with those of students who started from the same prior attainment nationally. It is not a measure of teaching quality, and the order of the rows is not a ranking. Matched entries count only students DfE could match to prior attainment.

Source: DfE qualification and subject value added, 2024/25, A-level Physics, local authority 302, queried on 16 October 2026. Provider type from each provider's Get Information About Schools record, read the same day. Intervals are the published 95% confidence intervals. Sorted by matched entries, largest first, not by score; the order is not a ranking and the measure is not a measure of teaching quality.

Which Barnet Physics scores can be told apart from the national average?

Six of the 22 published intervals lie entirely above zero: Woodhouse College (0.35 on 127 entries), Ashmole Academy (0.64 on 41), Imperial College London Mathematics School (1.29 on 41), Brampton College (0.64 on 14), Hasmonean High School for Boys (0.98 on 11) and Hendon School (0.96 on 9). Two lie entirely below: The Henrietta Barnett School (-0.45 on 40) and Barnet and Southgate College (-1.43 on 12). The other 14 span zero, so DfE's own test cannot separate them from the national average. Three of the six rest on 14 entries or fewer, so their intervals are wide: Brampton's starts at 0.02 and Hendon's runs from 0.19 to 1.73.

Imperial College London Mathematics School stands out in the table, and not only by its score. It returns 1.29 on 41 matched entries, with an interval of 0.93 to 1.65, the highest point estimate and the highest lower bound among the 22. DfE's A level maths and science participation table gives it 43 A-level students in 2024/25, of whom 95.3% were entered for Physics, and its own curriculum page says every student takes Maths and Further Maths and at least one of Physics and Chemistry. GIAS records it as opening on 1 September 2023, so the row describes a school that had been open for two academic years.

On admissions, the two sources describe the school differently. GIAS records its admissions policy as Non-selective; the school's own admissions page describes an admissions test and an interview, and its FAQ says applicants should be likely to achieve a grade 8 or 9 in GCSE mathematics. We report both and do not settle between them.

How much more maths does a Barnet sixth form ask for in Physics than in Biology?

This is the part of a provider's published conditions that most changes what a Year 11 family should do, and it appears in no table DfE publishes. We read each provider's own Physics entry beside its Biology entry. Eleven state a GCSE Maths grade on both lines. At seven the two are the same. At four the Physics line asks for one grade more. At none does it ask for less.

Source: each provider's own published entry conditions, linked in the table, read on 16 October 2026. JCoSS is read from the Internet Archive's capture of its page on 17 May 2026, because its own site would not serve our requests on the day (HTTP 403). The bracket after each link gives the entry year the document names, the year in its file name, the date of the archive capture, or marks a current page. Entry conditions change between cycles, so check the one your child is applying under.

The four that ask for more are Woodhouse College, East Barnet School, Hasmonean High School for Boys and JCoSS, each at grade 7 against grade 6. JCoSS's Biology entry also rises to a grade 7 in Maths when Biology is the student's only science or maths subject, so the one-grade gap there is the usual case rather than the only one.

Woodhouse is the clearest case because the step is in its own words on three course pages. Biology and Chemistry each ask for grade 6 in Mathematics, and Physics asks for grade 7, the same grade it asks for A-level Mathematics itself. The share of maths in the course steps up in the same order: its pages say 10% of Biology questions are on maths skills, that at least 20% of Chemistry involves maths skills, and, for Physics, that the maths content is set by all exam boards to be 40% of the course. Its Physics page adds that a student is not required to take A level Maths.

Two providers compare differently, and we have kept them out of the count. The Compton School's Physics line asks for a grade 6 in Maths while its Biology line gives no Maths grade, so the Biology comparison falls to the school-wide minimum of grade 5 in Maths and English. Mill Hill County High School's Physics line asks for a grade 5 in Maths, its Biology line gives none, and its school-wide minimum is a grade 4. Those set a Physics line against a school-wide minimum, which is not like against like, so they are reported here and not counted. At Finchley Catholic High School neither the Physics line nor the Biology line names a Maths grade, and both fall back on the school-wide grade 5.

For seven more providers the published text does not allow a line-by-line comparison. St Michael's Catholic Grammar School and The Henrietta Barnett School each publish one school-wide rule, a grade 7 in the subjects studied, with Maths and English Language also at grade 7 at St Michael's, and at grade 6 at The Henrietta Barnett School when they are not studied in the sixth form. Brampton College expects at least grade 7 in Mathematics and Science generally, and Barnet and Southgate College asks for five grade 5s and a grade 6 in a relevant subject for maths and sciences. Hendon School's Physics page gives a science grade, written 6:6, and no Maths grade. Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet states that it does not accept external students into its sixth form, and the Physics page we read names no entry grade. Imperial College London Mathematics School teaches Maths and Further Maths to every student.

Which Barnet providers make A-level Maths compulsory alongside Physics?

Five of the 22 do, in their own published words. JCoSS (22 matched entries) writes that it requires students who study A-Level Physics to also be studying A-Level Maths. London Academy (13) says A-Level physics must be studied alongside A-Level Mathematics. The Totteridge Academy (17) adds “You must also do Maths A-level” to its Physics entry criteria. Barnet and Southgate College (12) tells students that Physics cannot be studied without Mathematics. St Mary's and St John's (14) carries a footnote on its Physics row reading “must also take Mathematics A Level”. Between them they hold 78 of the 621 matched entries, about one in eight. Imperial College London Mathematics School (41) teaches Maths and Further Maths to every student, which takes the share to 119 of 621, about one in five.

At the other end, Woodhouse College says a student is not required to take A level Maths, Mill Hill School Foundation says its Physicists are not strictly required to take A Level Mathematics but strongly advises it, St Michael's Catholic Grammar School says it is not essential, The Henrietta Barnett School strongly recommends it and The Compton School advises students intending to study Physics to consider it. Where a provider's page is silent, that is not evidence either way.

Reading the Physics line alone can understate the bar, and that is the point worth taking from this section. London Academy's Physics line asks for a grade 5 or above in Maths, the same as its Biology line, but Physics there must be studied alongside A-Level Mathematics, whose own entry line is a grade 6 or above in Maths. The Totteridge Academy's Physics line gives no GCSE Maths grade at all, and its Biology line says a grade 6 is recommended, yet Physics there requires A-level Maths, whose entry criteria are a grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics. For a student at either, the bar to start Physics is higher than the Physics line shows. At London Academy the two lines tie and the requirement does not.

Does a student's Physics exam board follow from their school's Biology board?

Often, but not always. Of the 22 providers, 18 name their Physics board on pages we read, and 17 of those also name a Biology board. At 12 of the 17 the two are the same. At five they differ: St Michael's Catholic Grammar School and Christ's College Finchley teach Edexcel Physics beside AQA Biology, The Henrietta Barnett School teaches Edexcel Physics beside OCR Biology, The Compton School teaches OCR Physics beside AQA Biology, and Brampton College teaches AQA Physics beside OCR Biology. A family that has bought a Biology revision guide cannot assume it is for the right board in Physics.

Source: each provider's own course page, prospectus or leaflet, linked in the Physics column, read on 16 October 2026 (JCoSS from the Internet Archive's capture of 17 May 2026). Biology boards come from the same providers' Biology pages or documents.

Weighted by matched entries, the providers that name a board split three ways. Twelve name AQA, covering 365 entries; four name Edexcel, covering 95; two name OCR, covering 26. Of the providers that name a board, that is about three entries in four on AQA, one in five on Edexcel and one in twenty on OCR. Four providers, with 135 entries between them, name no Physics board on the pages we read: Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet, Imperial College London Mathematics School, Mill Hill School Foundation and London Academy. That is a statement about our search, not about those schools.

Edexcel is the board most tied to Physics in Barnet: it is the Physics board at four providers but the Biology board at only one of the 17 that name one, Barnet and Southgate College. The Henrietta Barnett School's booklet describes its Edexcel Physics course as 16 core practicals and Christ's College Finchley's course page as 16 required practicals; Woodhouse College, on AQA, describes 12 specified practicals. Our AQA, Edexcel and OCR A-level Physics guides cover each specification in full.

How do we tutor A-level Physics for Barnet students?

We start from the three things this page has measured: the board the student's school enters, the maths the provider asked for, and the papers ahead of them. For a Woodhouse, Ashmole or East Barnet student that means AQA's papers; for a student at The Henrietta Barnett School, St Michael's or Christ's College it means Edexcel's; for The Compton School or Hendon, OCR's. Where a provider names no board, establishing it is the first job, because the past papers worth working through depend on it.

The maths gets its own attention. At the providers that make A-level Maths compulsory, Physics is partly a maths course by rule, and at the others it is partly one in practice: rearranging equations, reading and drawing graphs, handling units and carrying uncertainties through a calculation. We work those on the student's own past papers rather than on generic maths exercises, so the practice looks like the paper they will sit.

Sessions are one to one and online or in person across the borough. We also support A-level Maths, Biology and Chemistry in Barnet, which matters where a student takes Physics alongside another science or with the Maths it often requires: see our A-level Maths tutors in Barnet, A-level Chemistry tutors in Barnet and A-level Biology tutors in Barnet pages, and our A-level tuition in Barnet guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Barnet schools and colleges have a DfE A-level Physics score for 2024/25?

Thirty-one Barnet providers return an A-level Physics row in DfE's 2024/25 qualification and subject value added dataset. Twenty-two carry a published score and nine are suppressed: Clarion, Bishop Douglass School Finchley, Menorah Grammar School, Hasmonean High School for Girls, Mount House School, Queen Elizabeth's Girls' School, St Andrew the Apostle Greek Orthodox School, Saracens High School and The King Alfred School. Suppression means the cohort was too small for DfE to publish, not that Physics was not taught. The 22 published rows cover 621 matched entries, and Barnet is its own local authority, code 302, so the authority sweep and the borough are the same list.

Which Barnet provider enters the most A-level Physics students?

Woodhouse College, with 127 of the 621 matched entries across the 22 published rows, about one in five. Its value added is 0.35 with a 95% interval of 0.15 to 0.56, entirely above zero. Its own Physics page names AQA, asks for grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics and says a student is not required to take A level Maths, although it helps.

Do I need A-level Maths to take A-level Physics at a Barnet sixth form?

It depends on the provider. JCoSS, London Academy, The Totteridge Academy, Barnet and Southgate College and St Mary's and St John's make it a condition in their own published text, and Imperial College London Mathematics School teaches Maths and Further Maths to every student. Woodhouse College says it is not required, Mill Hill School Foundation says it is not strictly required, St Michael's Catholic Grammar School says it is not essential, and The Henrietta Barnett School strongly recommends it. Check the entry year your child is applying under with the provider.

Which exam board do Barnet sixth forms use for A-level Physics?

Of the 18 providers whose own pages name a Physics board, 12 name AQA, four name Edexcel (The Henrietta Barnett School, St Michael's Catholic Grammar School, Christ's College Finchley and Barnet and Southgate College) and two name OCR (The Compton School and Hendon School). Four providers name none on the pages we read: Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet, Imperial College London Mathematics School, Mill Hill School Foundation and London Academy. At five providers the Physics board differs from the same provider's Biology board.

Which Barnet providers have no published A-level Physics score?

Nine: Clarion, Bishop Douglass School Finchley, Menorah Grammar School, Hasmonean High School for Girls, Mount House School, Queen Elizabeth's Girls' School, St Andrew the Apostle Greek Orthodox School, Saracens High School and The King Alfred School. Each returns a suppressed row in DfE's 2024/25 data, shown as a letter c in place of the score, the interval and the entry count. Suppression protects small cohorts. It means the matched group was too small for DfE to publish a figure, not that Physics was not taught or not entered.

What does Imperial College London Mathematics School's Physics score tell a parent?

It returns 1.29 on 41 matched entries with a 95% interval of 0.93 to 1.65, the highest point estimate and highest lower bound among Barnet's 22 published Physics scores. DfE's participation table gives the school 43 A-level students in 2024/25, of whom 95.3% were entered for Physics, and GIAS records it as opening on 1 September 2023. GIAS records its admissions policy as Non-selective, while the school's own pages describe an admissions test and interview; the two sources differ and we report both.
