Why is Chemistry the largest A-level at King Edward VI Handsworth School but only the third largest at Bishop Vesey's?

Every one of the four providers compared on this page is a selective state grammar academy in the Birmingham local authority, and every one of them is open, with a sixth form, and publishing 16-to-18 results — each checked individually at the Department for Education's Get Information about Schools register in September 2026. That makes them unusually comparable. What they do with Chemistry, however, is not comparable at all.

The table below uses each institution's own Department for Education 16-to-18 record. Those records, published in April 2026, cover the students who completed their 16-to-18 studies in the summer of 2025 — the 2024/25 cohort, and the most recent published year at the time of writing. Every figure in it is a published figure: none of these four providers returns the Department's "16 to 18 data is not available" state, which is a different thing from a nil entry and is easy to mistake for one.

Read the first two columns together and the four schools separate immediately. At King Edward VI Handsworth School, Chemistry is the single largest A-level in the building: 97 entries, ahead of Biology's 87 and Mathematics' 80, from a sixth form of 163 A-level students. At Bishop Vesey's Grammar School it is only the third largest, on 68, behind Mathematics' 151 and Biology's 85 — and Bishop Vesey's has the largest sixth form of the four, at 210 A-level students. The school with the most A-level students enters the fewest of them for Chemistry, and the school with the fewest enters the most.

That is a curriculum-shape difference rather than a quality difference, and the right-hand columns make the point. Bishop Vesey's posts both the highest average result of the four (44.36 points, a B+) and the highest AAB-or-better rate (45.2% against Birmingham's 21.9%), while running the smallest Chemistry cohort. Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls averages 44.27 points — 0.09 points behind Bishop Vesey's, which is as close as two schools realistically get — yet the two land on opposite sides of the progress banding line, Bishop Vesey's at +0.01 banded average and Sutton Coldfield at -0.12 banded below average. Those are whole-school figures covering every A-level each school teaches, not Chemistry figures, and the next section is about what happens when you look at Chemistry on its own.

For citywide scale: 1,528 Birmingham students completed an A-level in Chemistry in 2024/25, against 1,510 in Biology, 1,837 in Mathematics and 700 in Physics. Of the Chemistry students, 27.487% were awarded an A* or an A and 7.723% an A*; of the Biology students, 31.921% and 10.861%. Those are two different groups of students sitting two different qualifications, and the figures are set out here as what they are — the size and the grade profile of each subject in the city — rather than as a comparison of difficulty. Nothing in the published data says why the two differ, and this page does not guess.

Which Birmingham sixth form adds less value in A-level Chemistry than in A-level Biology?

Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls, on the most recent published figures — and it is the only one of the four where the two subjects can be told apart at all.

The progress scores in the table above are whole-school numbers. The Department for Education also publishes a separate, less-used measure: a value added score for each individual subject at each individual school, with a confidence interval around it. A value added score asks how a school's students did in that subject relative to what students with the same prior attainment achieved nationally. Zero is the national benchmark. The confidence interval matters more than the score: where the interval straddles zero, the result cannot be distinguished from ordinary variation, and only where it lies wholly on one side can you say the school is genuinely above or below the benchmark.

Three of the four rows say the same thing: nothing that can be separated from noise. At Five Ways, Handsworth School and Bishop Vesey's, both subjects' intervals cross zero, so neither subject is measurably above or below the national benchmark and neither is measurably different from the other. A family at any of those three should read the two subjects as performing alike.

Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls is the exception. Its Chemistry value added is -0.41, with a confidence interval running from -0.66 to -0.16 that sits entirely below zero. Its Biology value added is -0.02, with an interval from -0.26 to 0.21 that straddles zero. On the published figures, Chemistry at that school is below the national benchmark by a margin the data can actually resolve, and Biology is not — a gap of 0.39 between the two scores at one school in one year. Cohort size does not explain it: the value added calculation covers 80 Chemistry entries and 79 Biology entries, which is as near to identical as two subjects get.

One caution belongs with that figure. A value added score is a cohort average for a single year, not a forecast for one student, and a single year's figure can move. What it does establish is that a school's headline progress banding can conceal a subject-level difference in either direction: Sutton Coldfield's whole-school score of -0.12 sits between its Chemistry and Biology results and describes neither of them well. The same school's Physics value added, -0.43, looks almost identical to its Chemistry figure but carries an interval of -0.92 to 0.07 that crosses zero, because it rests on 22 entries rather than 80. A similar-looking score can be resolvable in one subject and not in another purely because of how many students sat it.

Why do Birmingham's girls' grammar schools enter nearly four times as many Chemistry students as Physics?

Across these four schools, the ratio of A-level Chemistry entries to A-level Physics entries varies more than any other figure on this page. King Edward VI Handsworth School entered 97 students for Chemistry and 26 for Physics, a ratio of 3.73 to one. Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls entered 81 and 22, a ratio of 3.68 to one. King Edward VI Five Ways School, which is co-educational, entered 101 and 55, a ratio of 1.84 to one. Bishop Vesey's Grammar School, which admits boys, entered 68 and 66 — a ratio of 1.03 to one, which is as close to parity as the two subjects come anywhere in this data.

That ordering is worth stating carefully, because it is easy to over-read. These are four institutions, not a sample. Two of them happen to be girls' schools and they sit at one end; one admits boys and sits at the other; the co-educational school sits between them. Four schools describe four schools, and nothing here establishes a general relationship between a student's sex and their likelihood of taking Physics — that would need the whole cohort, not four institutions chosen because they are otherwise comparable. What the four rows do establish is narrower and more useful to a parent: the subject mix a Chemistry student sits alongside differs sharply between these schools, and it is a published fact about each one rather than an impression.

It matters for tuition because A-level Chemistry leans on skills that a student taking Physics or Mathematics alongside it practises twice a week and a student taking neither may only meet in Chemistry lessons. At Handsworth School and Sutton Coldfield Girls, where Physics entries are a quarter of Chemistry entries, a much larger share of the Chemistry class is meeting rearranged equations, logarithms and gradient-of-a-curve work in Chemistry and nowhere else. At Bishop Vesey's, where the two subjects are level, far more of the Chemistry class has that reinforcement built into its timetable. The citywide figures show the same shape at a larger scale: 1,528 Birmingham students completed A-level Chemistry in 2024/25 against 700 in Physics, more than twice as many.

What GCSE grades do Birmingham sixth forms want before you can start A-level Chemistry?

Two of the four publish their entry criteria in a form a family can read before results day, and both set the bar through a general rule rather than a Chemistry-specific one.

Bishop Vesey's Grammar School works from a Best 8 score across a student's highest GCSE results, which must include English Language and Mathematics. Its published policy states that "A minimum of 52 points is required for entry into the Sixth Form and at least a Grade 5 in English Language and Mathematics", and that "A Best 8 score of at least 66 points is required to study four A Levels." On individual subjects it is explicit: "At least a Grade 7 in the most closely-related GCSE subject is required to study a subject at A Level." For A-level Chemistry, the most closely related GCSE subject is GCSE Chemistry, so the published floor is a grade 7 in it. The school also commits to admitting "a minimum of 80 students from other schools" to its sixth form each year, so this is a live route for families outside the school as well as inside it.

King Edward VI Handsworth School sets a profile rather than a points total. Applicants "must achieve a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grade 6 or above, A minimum of a Grade 5 in GCSE English (either Language or Literature) and GCSE Mathematics", and "GCSE Grades 7, 8 or 9 are expected in the subjects which pupils wish to continue to study at A-level". It then names additional requirements for three subjects only — Economics, Politics and Psychology — so Chemistry sits under the general continuation rule.

The point worth drawing out is what neither school does. A-level Chemistry is required to devote at least 20% of its assessment to Level 2 mathematics against Biology's 10%, a floor set by the Department for Education rather than by any exam board; our A-level Chemistry subject page sets out how that works and how each board implements it. Neither of these two Birmingham schools reflects it in their entry criteria. Bishop Vesey's names exactly one subject-specific mathematics condition on its whole published page and it is for A-level Mathematics, not Chemistry; Handsworth School's named exceptions do not include either science. A student can therefore meet the published bar for A-level Chemistry on the strength of their Chemistry grade alone, and meet the heavier mathematical demand only after they have started. That is not a criticism of either policy — it is simply where the gap tends to appear, and it is the most common reason a strong GCSE chemist finds the first term harder than expected.

King Edward VI Five Ways School and Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls do not publish per-subject A-level entry requirements in a form that could be read for this page. Five Ways confirms that Chemistry is on its current offer — it lists "up to 21 different A level courses" including Chemistry — and Sutton Coldfield publishes Chemistry progress statements for both Year 12 and Year 13 dated 11th May 2026, so both plainly teach the subject now. Their thresholds are a question for the schools themselves.

Chemistry is a facilitating subject — what do these four schools' AAB rates show?

The Department for Education publishes one measure built specifically around the subjects selective universities ask for: the share of students achieving AAB or higher including at least two facilitating subjects. Chemistry is one of those subjects, which makes this the measure most directly relevant to a Chemistry student's next step, and it separates these four schools more sharply than their average grades do.

Bishop Vesey's Grammar School reaches it with 45.2% of its students. King Edward VI Five Ways School and Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls both post 40.9% — identical figures, read independently off each school's own record. King Edward VI Handsworth School posts 33.7%. Every one of those is comfortably above Birmingham's state-funded average of 21.9% and England's 17.5%, so a family at any of the four is looking at a school where this outcome is roughly twice as common as it is citywide.

The ordering is worth reading against the Chemistry entry counts, because it runs against them. Handsworth School enters the largest share of its sixth form for Chemistry of any school here — 97 of 163 A-level students — and posts the lowest AAB rate of the four. Bishop Vesey's enters the smallest Chemistry cohort, 68 from a sixth form of 210, and posts the highest. That is not evidence that entering more students for Chemistry lowers a school's AAB rate, and nothing in the published data would support that claim: a school that enters a wider range of students for a facilitating subject is measuring a different group from one that enters fewer. It is simply a reason not to read either figure on its own.

Retention tells a quieter version of the same story. All four schools keep almost everyone to the end of the main study programme — 99.5% at Bishop Vesey's, 98.7% at Sutton Coldfield Girls, 98.5% at Five Ways and 97.6% at Handsworth School, against 94.3% for Birmingham and 93.1% for England. Whatever is happening to Chemistry results at these schools is not students leaving partway through.

Why does AQA's A-level Chemistry Paper 3 catch students out?

Because it asks for a different skill mix from the other two papers, and the weightings say so explicitly. Across AQA's A-level Chemistry, assessment objective AO3 — analysing, interpreting and evaluating scientific information, making judgements and refining practical procedures — carries 34% on Paper 3 against 22% on each of Papers 1 and 2. Proportionally less of the paper rewards recall and more of it rewards handling material the student has not seen before, which is why strong content knowledge on its own does not reliably carry a student through it.

The question types make that concrete. Of Paper 3's 90 marks, 40 are questions on practical techniques and data analysis, 20 test across the specification, and 30 — a full third of the paper — are multiple choice. Multiple choice rewards and punishes differently from written answers: there are no method marks, so a student who understands the chemistry but works slowly loses whole marks rather than partial ones, and a student who guesses well can mask a gap that shows up nowhere else until the next mock.

The contrast with Biology at the same school is sharp, and it is the reason a student taking both cannot revise for the two papers the same way. AQA's A-level Biology Paper 3 is also two hours and also 30% of the A-level, but its 78 marks are 38 marks of structured questions including practical techniques, 15 marks of critical analysis of given experimental data, and 25 marks for one essay from a choice of two titles. One paper ends in a third of its marks as multiple choice; the other ends in an extended essay. King Edward VI Handsworth School teaches both subjects on AQA and says so, so a student there taking Chemistry and Biology together is preparing for both shapes in the same fortnight.

Underneath the practical questions sits a list that does not change between boards. AQA publishes twelve apparatus and techniques, labelled AT a to AT l, covering everything from titration with burette and pipette to distillation under reflux, thin-layer chromatography, melting point apparatus and setting up electrochemical cells — and states that these are "common to all A-level Chemistry specifications". So they describe the practical ground a Birmingham student covers whichever board their school has chosen, which matters here because only one of the four providers compared on this page publishes the specification it teaches.
