A pupil sitting separate Chemistry receives one grade for Chemistry, a second for Biology and a third for Physics — three GCSEs, three certificates. A pupil sitting Combined Science receives one certificate carrying two grades, written as a pair such as 7-6 or 5-4, covering all three sciences in a single double award.
Which route a pupil is on depends almost entirely on their own school's timetabling decision, and two Birmingham schools' own published entry counts show how differently that decision can land. At King Edward VI Five Ways School in Bartley Green, a selective grammar school, 121 of its 181 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 in 2024/25 were entered for Chemistry — exactly the same number entered for Biology and for Physics — with the remaining 60 pupils taking Science: Double Award instead. At Swanshurst School, a non-selective girls' school in Billesley, only 109 of its 327 pupils were entered for Chemistry, against 111 for Biology and 110 for Physics, while 214 took Science: Double Award. The three sciences do not always move together at a given school, and which one is lowest matters more than it looks — as the next section shows.

The Department for Education does not publish a standalone “GCSE Chemistry entry rate” for a local authority; the closest published measure is “entering for biology, chemistry & physics”, which counts only pupils entered for all three sciences together. That group can never be larger than whichever of the three subjects has the fewest individual entries — and at the two Birmingham schools checked here where the three diverge, Swanshurst School and King Edward VI Handsworth School, Chemistry was that smallest number in both cases, not Biology or Physics.
Swanshurst School makes the mechanism visible. Its published triple-science rate is 33.3% — and that figure is not an average of the three sciences, it is Chemistry's own entry count (109) as a share of the school's 327-pupil cohort, to one decimal place. Had DfE instead used Biology's higher count of 111, the rate would read 33.9%; Physics's 110 would give 33.6%. Neither of those numbers is what DfE actually publishes, because a pupil counted in “entering for all three” cannot exceed the smallest of the three subject totals, and at Swanshurst that smallest total is Chemistry's.
Checking each Birmingham grammar school's own subject-entry list shows this is not a non-selective quirk. At King Edward VI Aston School, King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys and King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys, Chemistry, Biology and Physics are entered in exactly identical numbers, so their published rates — 100.0%, 83.2% and 97.3% — are unambiguous, the same whichever science you divide by. But at King Edward VI Handsworth School, a selective girls' grammar, Chemistry has exactly one fewer entry (191) than Biology and Physics (192 each) — and the school's published rate of 99.5% is 191 of 192, not 192 of 192. A single pupil not entered for Chemistry, at a school that otherwise looks uniform, is enough to move the published figure below Biology's and Physics's own 100%.

Of Birmingham's eight state grammar schools, these are the five whose full Biology/Chemistry/Physics entry breakdown has been checked; the remaining three — King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls (100.0%), Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls (98.9%) and Bishop Vesey's Grammar School (91.1%) — are cited below at their published rate only. Four of the five checked show identical entries across all three sciences — only Handsworth School's single-pupil gap, and Swanshurst's larger one, demonstrate the constraint directly, which is itself worth knowing: at most Birmingham grammar schools, Chemistry is not quietly capping the rate, because there is no gap for it to exploit.
Bishop Vesey's Grammar School is worth a caveat rather than a clean sixth row: its own subject list shows 175 entries each for Biology, Chemistry and Physics — uniform, like Aston and Camp Hill Boys — but 175 against the school's 191 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 works out at 91.6%, not quite the 91.1% DfE actually publishes for this measure. The gap is small, but real, and rather than force the two figures together this page simply flags it: DfE's performance-measure cohort for “entering for biology, chemistry & physics” evidently is not always identical to a straightforward headcount of GCSE entries divided by the total Key Stage 4 cohort, and a parent doing the same division at home should not expect it to match to the decimal point every time.
A published rate can hide which science is actually the constraint.

Six of the eight post triple-science entry rates of 91% or higher, including the six broken down by subject above; the remaining two, Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls (179 pupils, 98.9%) and King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls (148 pupils, 100.0%), are cited here at their published rate only, since their own Chemistry/Biology/Physics split has not been checked line by line. Together the eight schools account for 1,328 of Birmingham's 14,972 Key Stage 4 pupils — about 9% of the cohort — yet their near-universal triple-science entry pulls the citywide figure upward relative to what a family at a non-selective school will actually see.
Colmers School and Sixth Form College, a non-selective school in Rednal with 211 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4, entered 22.3% of its cohort for the triple sciences in 2024/25 — close to the England-wide state-funded figure of 23.3%, and a far more typical result for a Birmingham family outside the eight selective schools than the citywide 27.1% average suggests. A citywide triple-science figure like this one does not tell a parent which science their own child will actually sit — that depends on their own school's entry pattern, which this page has checked subject by subject only at the schools named above.

Separate Chemistry is examined over two papers and reported as a single grade from 9 to 1, the same scale as any other GCSE. Combined Science, sometimes still called by its older name of Double Science, is examined over six papers spanning biology, chemistry and physics, and reported as a double grade on a 17-point scale running from 9-9 at the top to 1-1 at the bottom — the two numbers in the pair are always within one grade of each other, so a pupil cannot be awarded a lone 6 or an 8-4 combination.
Combined Science also does double duty for a separate purpose: the English Baccalaureate, or EBacc, requires two science GCSEs among its subject slots, and Combined Science's two grades satisfy that requirement on their own, without a pupil needing to take a fourth science subject. There is no separate “science element” inside Attainment 8 in the way there is a maths element or an English element — Attainment 8 scores a pupil's best eight results across four buckets, English and maths each double-weighted, three EBacc slots, and three further open slots — and science sits inside the EBacc bucket alongside languages, history and geography, rather than having a bucket of its own.
Which exam board sets the paper depends on the school rather than on the qualification itself. AQA's specifications are GCSE Chemistry (8462), Combined Science: Trilogy (8464) and Combined Science: Synergy (8465); OCR offers GCSE Chemistry A (J248) and Combined Science A (J250) on its Gateway route, or Chemistry B (J258) and Combined Science B (J260) on its Twenty First Century route; Pearson Edexcel publishes its own equivalent GCSE Chemistry and Combined Science specifications under a different set of codes. All three boards are regulated by Ofqual to the same overall standard, but a school chooses one board for its whole cohort rather than pupil by pupil, so the exact topic list and paper structure a child sits is fixed by their school's choice, not by their postcode. AQA publishes its full GCSE Chemistry specification online for any parent who wants the detail.

Birmingham's overall Key Stage 4 results for 2024/25 sit close to, and in places above, the England state-funded average, even though its science-entry pattern skews toward Combined Science more than the national picture does. The city's Attainment 8 score was 46.6 against an England state-funded figure of 46.1, and its EBacc entry rate of 47.6% comfortably exceeds the England rate of 40.5% — a wide EBacc-entry gap that is itself partly a product of the same grammar schools discussed above, several of which enter close to every pupil for the full EBacc combination.

One measure many parents expect to see is missing from every figure above, and it is missing everywhere in England, not just in Birmingham. Progress 8, which normally tracks how much progress pupils made against their starting point rather than the grade they ended on, cannot be calculated for any state-funded school for the 2024/25 or 2025/26 academic years. The Department for Education's own school-performance service explains why on every page of local-authority data: “We are not able to calculate Progress 8 scores for academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26. This is because there is no KS2 assessment data available to calculate the baseline for Progress 8 for these years due to Covid-19 disruption.” No replacement measure has been announced for either year, so Attainment 8 — an outcome measure, not a progress measure — is the only basis for every comparison on this page.

A pupil taking Combined Science does not receive a Chemistry GCSE at all — the chemistry content contributes to the combined grade instead.
Department for Education figures for 2024/25 show 27.1% of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 in Birmingham's state-funded secondary schools were entered for the triple sciences — Biology, Chemistry and Physics together — against 23.3% across England's state-funded schools as a whole. The remaining pupils in both cases — 72.9% in Birmingham — took Combined Science instead. Because DfE's measure counts only pupils entered for all three sciences together, the count can never exceed whichever science has the fewest individual entries at a school. At the two Birmingham schools checked at that level of detail — Swanshurst School and King Edward VI Handsworth School — that smallest science was Chemistry, not Biology or Physics.
Because the Department for Education's measure counts only pupils entered for Biology, Chemistry and Physics together, and that group cannot be larger than whichever of the three subjects has the fewest individual entries. At Swanshurst School, for example, Chemistry's 109 entries are lower than Biology's 111 and Physics's 110, and the school's published rate of 33.3% matches Chemistry's own share of the 327-pupil cohort exactly — not Biology's or Physics's higher share. At schools where all three sciences have identical entries, such as King Edward VI Five Ways School, this distinction does not arise.
Not universally, but close to it at most of them. Of Birmingham's eight state grammar schools reporting 2024/25 Key Stage 4 results, six entered 91% or more of their pupils for the triple sciences, led by King Edward VI Aston School and King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls at 100%. The lowest of the eight, King Edward VI Five Ways School, still entered 66.9% of its pupils for the triple sciences — well above Birmingham's citywide average of 27.1%.
Birmingham schools set their own choice of exam board, and AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR are all in use across the city. AQA's specifications are GCSE Chemistry (8462) and Combined Science: Trilogy (8464) or Synergy (8465); OCR offers GCSE Chemistry A (J248) and Combined Science A (J250) on its Gateway route, or Chemistry B (J258) and Combined Science B (J260) on its Twenty First Century route; Pearson Edexcel publishes its own equivalent GCSE Chemistry and Combined Science specifications under a different set of codes.
