Department for Education figures for 2024/25 show 27.1% of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 in Birmingham's state-funded secondaries were entered for the triple sciences, against 23.3% nationally — and Chemistry is not always the science that sets that rate.

Is your child's GCSE Physics a stand-alone award, or half of Combined Science?

The tell is on the exam entry list rather than in how a school talks about “GCSE Science” day to day. A pupil sitting separate Physics receives one grade for Physics, a second for Biology and a third for Chemistry — three GCSEs, three certificates. A pupil sitting Combined Science receives one certificate carrying two grades, written as a pair such as 7-6 or 5-4, covering all three sciences in a single double award, and does not receive a Physics GCSE at all.

Three Birmingham schools' own published entry counts show how differently that split can land, and how rarely a school's triple-science rate can be read straight off which science looks like the smallest. At Nishkam High School, a Sikh faith free school in Alum Rock, Biology, Chemistry and Physics were each entered for exactly 58 of the school's 108 pupils in 2024/25 — a clean 53.7%, DfE's own published rate, with all three subjects moving together. Bartley Green School, a non-selective academy in the west of the city, shows the same pattern at a larger scale: 73 entries apiece for all three sciences against a cohort of 184, giving 39.7%. At Yardleys School in Yardley, though, the three subjects were not identical: Chemistry and Physics were each entered 172 times against Biology's 171, out of 176 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 — the fewest entries belonged to Biology, not Chemistry or Physics, the reverse of what a family might reasonably assume. DfE's own published rate for Yardleys is 96.6%, a little different from what dividing 171 or 172 by 176 would suggest — a reminder, as with Bishop Vesey's Grammar School on our Birmingham GCSE Chemistry page, that a school's own headcount arithmetic does not always land on the DfE performance-measure figure to the decimal point, and the published rate is always the one to trust.

Does Chemistry always set Birmingham's triple-science rate — or can Physics tie it?

Our Birmingham GCSE Chemistry page shows Chemistry setting the ceiling on the triple-science rate at two schools, Swanshurst School and King Edward VI Handsworth School. That is real, but it is not the whole picture: at four more Birmingham schools checked for this page, Physics ties Chemistry exactly as the smallest of the three sciences, or comes close enough that only DfE's own published figure can settle it.

Fairfax, a mixed 11-18 academy, entered 102 pupils for Chemistry and 102 for Physics in 2024/25, against 103 for Biology, out of a 255-pupil cohort — and the school's published triple-science rate of 40.0% matches 102 divided by 255 exactly. Physics is not the safer, looser subject here: it sets the ceiling every bit as tightly as Chemistry does. The same tie appears at two more schools within the King Edward VI Foundation, but well outside its grammar schools: King Edward VI Lordswood School for Girls entered 42 pupils apiece for Chemistry and Physics against 45 for Biology, out of 150 pupils (28.0%, matching 42 divided by 150 exactly), and Lordswood Boys' School entered 25 apiece for Chemistry and Physics against 26 for Biology, out of 97 pupils (25.8%, matching 25 divided by 97 exactly).

Archbishop Ilsley Catholic School shows why the published rate, not the arithmetic, is what to trust. Its own subject-entry list shows 83 entries each for Chemistry and Physics against 84 for Biology, out of 206 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 — an apparent tie at 83, the same shape as Fairfax. Dividing 83 by 206 gives 40.3%. DfE's own published triple-science rate for Archbishop Ilsley is 39.3%, a full percentage point lower. The gap means fewer than 83 of the school's pupils were actually entered for all three sciences together — some of the pupils counted in Chemistry's and Physics's own totals were not the same pupils, a distinction no amount of subject-by-subject arithmetic can recover. DfE's own published figure is the only reliable one, at Archbishop Ilsley as everywhere else on this page.

Is every “King Edward VI” school in Birmingham a grammar school?

No — and assuming otherwise from the name alone is an easy mistake to make. Six of Birmingham's eight state grammar schools carry the King Edward VI name, all covered on our Birmingham GCSE Chemistry page, where they post triple-science rates from 66.9% to 100%. But the King Edward VI Foundation also runs several non-selective schools that admit without an entrance test, and two of the four schools in the previous section — King Edward VI Lordswood School for Girls and Lordswood Boys' School — are among them, at 28.0% and 25.8% respectively, close to Birmingham's own 27.1% citywide average rather than the 91%-plus typical of the Foundation's selective schools.

Two more non-selective King Edward VI schools confirm the pattern. King Edward VI Northfield School for Girls entered 42 pupils for Chemistry against 49 for Biology and 47 for Physics, out of 141 pupils — Chemistry, not Physics, is the clear constraint here, and the published rate of 29.8% matches 42 divided by 141 exactly. King Edward VI King's Norton School for Boys entered exactly 50 pupils apiece for all three sciences, out of 171, for a published rate of 29.2%. The University of Birmingham School, an academy with no King Edward VI Foundation link at all, follows the same non-selective pattern: 50 Chemistry entries against 51 apiece for Biology and Physics, out of 151 pupils, for a published rate of 33.1% (50 divided by 151 exactly) — Chemistry is the constraint again, as it is at Swanshurst School on our Birmingham GCSE Chemistry page, but at a different school entirely.

What does GCSE Physics actually assess, and how is it graded?

Separate GCSE Physics is examined over two papers and reported as a single grade from 9 to 1 — under AQA's specification, Paper 1 and Paper 2 each carry 100 raw marks, scaled to a 200-mark total. Combined Science, sometimes still called Double Science, is examined over six papers spanning all three sciences and reported as a double grade on a 17-point scale running from 9-9 at the top to 1-1 at the bottom, with the two numbers in the pair never more than one grade apart.

Physics carries assessment content the other two sciences do not. AQA's GCSE Physics specification lists ten required practical activities; two of them — investigating the effectiveness of different materials as thermal insulators, and investigating the reflection and refraction of light — are marked “physics only” and do not form part of GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy or Synergy, while the remaining eight are shared across all three qualifications. Pearson Edexcel's own GCSE Physics specification instead sets eight mandatory core practicals, the same number as its Biology and Chemistry, and marks physics-only content throughout the specification with a “P” suffix, such as section 3.18P, to show it does not appear in the Combined Science specification. Both boards also issue a Physics-specific equation sheet alongside the exam paper, giving students some equations while requiring others to be recalled from memory.

Exam boards, not postcodes, decide which qualification code a Birmingham pupil sits. AQA's separate Physics is GCSE Physics (8463), alongside Combined Science: Trilogy (8464) and Combined Science: Synergy (8465); OCR offers GCSE Physics A (J249) and Combined Science A (J250) on its Gateway route, or Physics B (J259) and Combined Science B (J260) on its Twenty First Century route; Pearson Edexcel's own Physics is 1PH0, alongside Combined Science at 1SC0 — both codes appear together with Biology (1BI0) and Chemistry (1CH0) on the head teacher declaration form bound into Pearson's own Physics specification. A school enters its whole cohort through one board, so which specification a pupil sits depends on their school rather than where in Birmingham they live.

Combined Science's two grades also satisfy the English Baccalaureate's science requirement on their own. There is no separate “science element” inside Attainment 8 the way there is a maths element or an English element: Attainment 8 scores a pupil's best eight results across four buckets — English and maths each double-weighted, three EBacc slots and three further open slots — and science sits inside the EBacc bucket alongside languages, history and geography, rather than having a bucket of its own.

How does Birmingham's overall GCSE performance compare with England, and what's missing?

Birmingham's overall Key Stage 4 results for 2024/25 sit close to, and in places above, the England state-funded average, even though its science-entry pattern skews toward Combined Science more than the national picture does. The city's Attainment 8 score was 46.6 against an England state-funded figure of 46.1, and its EBacc entry rate of 47.6% comfortably exceeds the England rate of 40.5% — a gap that is itself partly a product of the grammar and non-grammar King Edward VI schools discussed above, several of which enter close to every pupil for the full EBacc combination.

One measure many parents expect to see is missing from every figure above, and it is missing everywhere in England, not just in Birmingham. Progress 8, which normally tracks how much progress pupils made against their starting point rather than the grade they ended on, cannot be calculated for any state-funded school for the 2024/25 or 2025/26 academic years. The Department for Education's own school-performance service explains why on every page of local-authority data: “We are not able to calculate Progress 8 scores for academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26. This is because there is no KS2 assessment data available to calculate the baseline for Progress 8 for these years due to Covid-19 disruption.” No replacement measure has been announced for either year, so Attainment 8 — an outcome measure, not a progress measure — is the only basis for every comparison on this page.

GCSE Physics is a single-award qualification: a pupil studies physics alone and receives one grade from 9 to 1, the same scale as any other GCSE, across two exam papers. Combined Science, examined across biology, chemistry and physics together, is a double award: a pupil receives two grades as a pair, from 9-9 down to 1-1, across six exam papers rather than the two set for separate Physics. A pupil taking Combined Science does not receive a Physics GCSE at all — the physics content contributes to the combined grade instead.

How many Birmingham pupils sit separate GCSE Physics rather than Combined Science?

Department for Education figures for 2024/25 show 27.1% of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 in Birmingham's state-funded secondary schools were entered for the triple sciences — Biology, Chemistry and Physics together — against 23.3% across England's state-funded schools as a whole. The remaining pupils in both cases — 72.9% in Birmingham — took Combined Science instead. But at Fairfax, King Edward VI Lordswood School for Girls and Lordswood Boys' School, Chemistry and Physics are entered in exactly equal numbers, both the smallest of the three sciences — Physics ties Chemistry as the constraint rather than sitting safely above it. At Archbishop Ilsley Catholic School, even that tied entry count of 83 overstates the true figure: DfE's published rate of 39.3% is lower than 83 divided by the school's 206 pupils would suggest, which is why this page always cites DfE's own published rate rather than deriving one from subject entries.
