Every Bristol Sixth Form and College With A-Level Data Enters Physics

Checked here against DfE’s own subjects-entered data for A-level Physics specifically, every Bristol sixth form and college that publishes any A-level subject data also publishes a GCE A-level Physics entry — the same 18-institution universe Leading Tuition’s Bristol A-level Chemistry and Bristol A-level English pages establish for their own subjects, independently confirmed here for Physics. Between them, Bristol’s Physics providers logged 423 A-level entries in 2024/25 across 17 distinct institutions.

North Bristol Post 16 Centre’s row above is not a nineteenth Bristol institution: it is the joint sixth form run by Redland Green School and Cotham School, and its 62 A-level Physics entries are exactly Redland Green’s 36 plus Cotham’s 26 — not a separate cohort. The same pooling carries into DfE’s value-added measure further down this page: North Bristol Post 16 Centre’s value-added row counts 61 VA-matched entries, one fewer than its 62 subjects-entered total because value-added counts only students with matched prior attainment, and it pools the same two schools’ results. It is never a fourth distinguishable Bristol Physics outcome alongside Redland Green’s and Cotham’s own scores — a point this page establishes once, here, and does not re-argue later.

St Brendan’s Sixth Form College is comfortably the largest single Physics department in the city at 64 entries — ahead of St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School on 44 and Bristol Grammar School on 39. Three providers tie at 36: Bristol Free School, Redland Green School and St Bede’s Catholic College. At the other end, Ashton Park School entered four Physics students in 2024/25, the smallest cohort of the eighteen.

Redmaids’ High School is the one Bristol provider running two separate Physics qualifications side by side: six GCE A-level Physics entries alongside three IBO Standard Level and one IBO Higher Level Physics component — a different qualification from the A-level, not a bigger version of it. Five Bristol providers also each recorded a single AS Physics entry in 2024/25 — Bristol Grammar School, City of Bristol College, North Bristol Post 16 Centre, Redland Green School and St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School — numbers small enough to reflect an individual student’s circumstances rather than a course any of them actively runs.

Which Board and Specification Bristol’s Physics Providers Actually Enter

The two boards behind almost every Bristol Physics entry are AQA’s Physics 7408 and OCR’s Physics A (H556), both confirmed here directly on the awarding bodies’ own specification pages. AQA states outright that at least 40% of the marks across its Physics assessment require mathematical skills at least to higher-tier GCSE standard — a figure this page uses again below when it comes to A-level Maths. • Bristol Grammar School enters Physics on OCR: its own Sixth Form subject booklet states “Exam Board: www.ocr.org.uk” without naming which of OCR’s two Physics specifications (Physics A H556 or Physics B Advancing Physics H557). That is a different board from Bristol Grammar School’s own Chemistry, which our Bristol A-level Chemistry page confirms runs on AQA — so “my school’s exam board” has no single answer even for one student taking both sciences at BGS.
• St Brendan’s Sixth Form College enters Physics on AQA, specification 7408, confirmed from the CGP AQA revision titles its own course page lists as required reading — the same board its Chemistry runs on.
• North Bristol Post 16 Centre enters Physics on OCR Physics A specifically, confirmed on Redland Green School’s own science department site: “The specification we follow at the North Bristol Post 16 Centre is OCR Physics A - H556.” Because NBP16C is Redland Green’s and Cotham’s own sixth form, this is also Redland Green’s and Cotham’s confirmed Physics board.

That accounts for board confirmed, from primary sources, at four named Bristol institutions — Bristol Grammar School, St Brendan’s Sixth Form College, Redland Green School and Cotham School (the last two via North Bristol Post 16 Centre’s own specification page). The remaining Bristol Physics providers’ boards were not independently verified in this research window; ask the sixth form directly, since Bristol Grammar School already shows that a school’s Chemistry board does not predict its Physics one.

What Bristol’s Physics Providers Ask For — and Whether They Expect A-Level Maths Alongside It

Entry requirements are set provider by provider, and Bristol’s Physics departments do not all set the same bar. Bristol Grammar School’s own Sixth Form booklet asks for “a grade 7 in GCSE Physics or a grade 7,7 in Combined Science, along with a grade 7 in Mathematics at GCSE” — the highest of the three we checked. St Brendan’s Sixth Form College asks for five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, GCSE English Language at grade 4, GCSE Maths at grade 6, and two Science GCSEs at grade 6 including Physics if taken separately. City of Bristol College asks for five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and Maths, plus either a grade 7/7 in Combined Science and a 6 in Maths, or a 6 in Physics and a 6 in Maths — maths at 6 on both routes.

Only one of the three states its position on A-level Maths directly. St Brendan’s Sixth Form College’s own course page says: “Physics can be studied alongside a wide range of subjects, although Mathematics is strongly recommended.” That is not a requirement — nothing we found makes A-level Maths compulsory alongside A-level Physics at any Bristol provider checked for this page — but it lines up with AQA’s own maths-weighting statement above: a Bristol Physics student without A-level Maths running alongside it is relying on GCSE-level fluency for two fifths of the marks.

Where DfE’s Value-Added Data Clears Zero for Bristol Physics

DfE separately publishes a value-added score for every A-level subject at institution level: how far each entry’s grade sits above or below what students with the same prior attainment achieve nationally, with a 95% confidence interval. Across Bristol’s 18 Physics providers, two are suppressed for too few entries to publish a score — Ashton Park School and Redmaids’ High School — leaving sixteen published rows.

Of those sixteen, four rows clear zero — their confidence interval sits entirely above or entirely below zero, rather than straddling it, which is the only basis DfE’s own data supports for calling a result distinguishable from the national average. One of the four is North Bristol Post 16 Centre’s pooled row, which (as established above) is Redland Green’s and Cotham’s results counted once more, not a fourth institution. That leaves three genuinely distinct Bristol Physics results clear of zero: Redland Green School at +0.78 (36 VA-matched entries), Bristol Grammar School at +0.59 (37 VA-matched entries), and St Brendan’s Sixth Form College at −0.45 (63 VA-matched entries) — the only negative result on the list, and, at 64 subjects-entered A-level Physics entries in the same year, also Bristol’s largest single Physics provider by entries. Note the two separate measures for St Brendan’s: 64 is the 2024/25 subjects-entered count, 63 is the smaller VA-matched figure, and the two should never be quoted as the same number.

The other twelve published rows span zero, and this page does not call them better or worse than the national average. A positive-looking score such as Cotham School’s +0.32 (25 VA-matched entries, CI −0.14 to +0.79) is not evidence of anything once the interval crosses zero.
