GCSE Physics and Combined Science Are Different Qualifications

A pupil sitting GCSE Physics as a separate science receives one grade, on the standard 9-to-1 scale, for that subject alone, and normally sits matching Biology and Chemistry GCSEs alongside it — three qualifications, three grades. Combined Science works differently: it is a single double-award qualification, examined across all three sciences, that produces two grades on a 17-point scale running from 9-9 down to 1-1, as AQA's own results-day guidance sets out. A pupil takes one route or the other. Nobody sits both.

AQA is the largest awarding body for GCSE Physics in England: its Physics specification is numbered 8463, and its double-award equivalent, Combined Science: Trilogy, is 8464 — different numbers from Chemistry's 8462 or Biology's 8461, because each separate science is its own qualification with its own code. Edexcel's separate Physics GCSE is specification 1PH0, first taught from September 2016, and OCR's Gateway Science route is Physics A, specification J249 — both confirmed directly on the awarding bodies' own specification pages.

Physics also carries more mathematics than either of its sister sciences. Ofqual's own regulatory conditions for GCSE science set a minimum, not a fixed figure: at least 30% of the marks allocated to GCSE Physics's core assessment objectives must test mathematical skills, against at least 20% for Chemistry and at least 10% for Biology — the highest floor of the three, set directly by the exams regulator rather than by any one awarding body. AQA's separate Physics specification also carries eight required practicals that pupils must complete as part of the course, distinct from the practicals set for Biology or Chemistry, and includes an entire topic, Space Physics, that AQA's own specification marks "physics only" — meaning Combined Science pupils are never taught it at all. AQA's Physics specification is built around eight numbered content sections, from Energy and Electricity through Particle Model of Matter, Atomic Structure, Forces, Waves and Magnetism and Electromagnetism to Space Physics itself — a structure a tutor needs to know to work out which section is actually giving a pupil trouble.

E-Act Montpelier High School shows the split just as clearly in its own 2025 results. Of a 131-pupil cohort, the school recorded 55 entries for Physics GCSE — matched exactly by 55 entries each for Biology and Chemistry — and 76 for Science: Double Award GCSE. The two routes sum exactly to the cohort (55+76=131), because every pupil sat one route or the other, never both. That 55-pupil figure is 42.0% of the year group, according to the Department for Education's Compare School and College Performance service.

Across most of Bristol's schools, this pattern holds: whatever number of pupils a school enters for Physics, it enters an almost identical number for Biology and Chemistry, because DfE's own "entering for biology, chemistry & physics" measure is built to count pupils doing all three subjects together. Citywide, 22.6% of Bristol's 4,131-pupil state-funded 2025 cohort was entered for all three separate sciences — meaning Physics's own entry count is, at most schools, simply the local reason behind that headline rate. Two Bristol schools break that pattern, and the rest of this page explains why — one narrowing the gap through Chemistry, and one, uniquely in this page's research, through Physics itself.

Ranked by rate, Collegiate School's 46.5% is the second-highest triple-science rate in Bristol; ranked by the raw number of pupils actually sitting Physics GCSE, its 40 entries put it 12th out of 15, behind schools with far lower rates but bigger year groups. St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School is the clearest example of the reverse: a 36.1% triple-science rate, mid-table by percentage, but 79 pupils sitting Physics GCSE — third-highest in the city by raw headcount, more than either Clifton College (67) or Redland Green School (66), both of which post higher rates. A school's triple-science percentage and the actual number of pupils it puts in for Physics GCSE answer different questions, and for a tutoring service working out where the largest pools of Physics candidates actually sit, the raw headcount is the number that matters.

Where Does Physics — Not Chemistry — Set Bristol's Triple-Science Ceiling?

At 13 of the 15 schools ranked above, Biology, Chemistry and Physics are entered in exactly the same numbers, so no single subject can be blamed or credited for the published triple-science rate — it simply reflects however many pupils take the triple route at that school. Only two Bristol schools break that pattern, and each breaks it through a different subject.

Queen Elizabeth's Hospital entered 88 pupils for Biology, 87 for Physics and just 81 for Chemistry in 2025 — Chemistry, not Physics, is the subject with the fewest raw entries at this school. DfE's own triple-science measure credits the school with 55.4%, or roughly 56 of its 101 pupils (a figure this page calculates from the published percentage and cohort size, not one DfE prints directly) — comfortably below even Chemistry's 81 entries, let alone Physics's 87. Physics's own entry rate here, 87 of 101 pupils or 86.1%, runs 30.7 percentage points ahead of the triple-science figure, the widest gap this page found at any Bristol school.

Clifton High School inverts that pattern entirely. It entered 66 pupils for Chemistry and 60 for Biology, but only 45 for Physics — the lowest of the three, and the only case among Bristol's 15 ranked schools where Physics itself has fewer raw entries than either of its sister sciences. DfE's triple-science measure for the school is 41.9%, implying around 31 of its 74 pupils sat all three sciences together — fewer than Physics's own 45 entries, but not by nearly as much as at Queen Elizabeth's Hospital. Physics's own entry rate here, 45 of 74 pupils or 60.8%, still runs ahead of the 41.9% triple-science figure — entering for triple science requires a Physics entry, so Physics's own rate can never fall below the triple-science rate at any school — but the 18.9-percentage-point gap is the narrowest this page found anywhere in Bristol, making Physics the closest thing to an actual bottleneck subject in the city.

Chemistry is not automatically the tighter constraint on Bristol's science provision, and neither is Physics. Checking all 15 ranked schools individually against DfE's own subjects-entered data — rather than assuming from the citywide pattern — shows the two schools that break from matched entries constrain on different subjects entirely: Chemistry at Queen Elizabeth's Hospital, Physics at Clifton High School. A parent or tutor working from the triple-science percentage alone, without checking a school's own subject-by-subject entries, would not know which science is actually behind a lower rate at either school.

Does Bristol's Physics Entry Rate Keep Pace With England?

Bristol's 22.6% separate-science entry rate is a state-funded-schools figure, covering the same 4,131-pupil cohort used throughout this page — DfE reports the city's eight independent schools, including Queen Elizabeth's Hospital, Clifton College and Clifton High School, as separate rows rather than folding them into the local-authority total. Matched against the correct comparator, England's state-funded average of 23.3% (625,647 pupils), Bristol sits 0.7 percentage points behind; England's all-schools average of 22.4% (700,688 pupils, a wider population including independent schools nationally) is a different figure, not the matched comparison.

Physics has no dedicated line inside Attainment 8. The measure scores a pupil across four buckets — English and maths, each double-weighted; three EBacc slots, where science results actually count; and three further open slots — so a school or tutor describing a pupil's "Attainment 8 Physics score" is describing something DfE does not publish. Nor is there a Progress 8 figure to set against any of this: DfE has not calculated Progress 8 for the 2024/25 or 2025/26 key stage 4 cohorts, stating plainly that "there is no KS2 assessment data available to calculate the baseline for Progress 8 for these years due to Covid-19 disruption."

How Should a Physics Pupil Read a Combined Science Grade Like 6-5?

A Combined Science result is printed as two digits, such as 6-5 or 4-4, and that format confuses plenty of parents seeing it for the first time. AQA's own grading guidance explains the mechanics: pupils "receive a double grade on a 17-point scale, from 9-9 to 1-1," built from "two equal or adjacent grades" — so a 6-5 is a real, valid outcome, not a typo or an average of two separate marks. There are 17 possible combinations in total, from the top pairing of 9-9 down to the bottom pairing of 1-1.

For a Combined Science pupil, that single pairing is really three subjects marked together, and Physics still carries the heaviest mathematics of the three inside it. AQA's own exam-structure guidance confirms at least 20% of the marks across a Combined Science qualification test mathematical skills overall, "made up of a minimum of 10% in biology; 20% in chemistry; and 30% in physics" — the same regulatory floors that apply when the three sciences are taken separately. A tutor working with a Combined Science pupil aiming for a higher pairing needs to know specifically whether the physics content, with its heavier maths demands, is the one holding the pair down — in exactly the way a separate-Physics pupil's single grade already tells a parent everything about that one subject on its own.
