GCSE Chemistry and Combined Science Are Different Qualifications

A pupil sitting GCSE Chemistry as a separate science receives one grade, on the standard 9-to-1 scale, for that subject alone, and normally sits matching Biology and Physics GCSEs alongside it — three qualifications, three grades. Combined Science works differently: it is a single double-award qualification, examined across all three sciences, that produces two grades on a 17-point scale running from 9-9 down to 1-1, as AQA's own results-day guidance sets out. A pupil takes one route or the other. Nobody sits both.

AQA is the largest awarding body for GCSE Chemistry in England: its Chemistry specification is numbered 8462, and its double-award equivalent, Combined Science: Trilogy, is 8464. Edexcel's separate Chemistry GCSE is specification 1CH0, and OCR's Gateway Science route is Chemistry A, specification J248 — both confirmed directly on the awarding bodies' own specification pages. Which board a given Bristol school uses is a matter for that school rather than a single citywide answer.

E-Act Montpelier High School shows the split just as clearly in its own 2025 results. Of a 131-pupil cohort, the school recorded 55 entries for Chemistry GCSE — matched exactly by 55 entries each for Biology and Physics — and 76 for Science: Double Award GCSE. The two routes sum exactly to the cohort (55+76=131), because every pupil sat one route or the other, never both. That 55-pupil figure is 42.0% of the year group, according to the Department for Education's Compare School and College Performance service.

Across most of Bristol's schools, this pattern holds: whatever number of pupils a school enters for Chemistry, it enters an almost identical number for Biology and Physics, because DfE's own "entering for biology, chemistry & physics" measure is built to count pupils doing all three subjects together. Citywide, 22.6% of Bristol's 4,131-pupil state-funded 2025 cohort was entered for all three separate sciences — meaning Chemistry's own entry count is, at most schools, simply the local reason behind that headline rate. Two Bristol schools break that pattern entirely, and a later section on this page shows why.

E-Act Montpelier High School's 55 Chemistry entries are exactly 11 times E-Act Merchants' Academy's 5 — two schools in the same academy trust family, entering wildly different shares of their pupils for the same separate-science qualification. Every school in the table above except two shows a Chemistry entry count within a pupil or two of its published triple-science percentage. Queen Elizabeth's Hospital and Clifton High School do not, and the next section explains why.

Where Does Chemistry Outpace Bristol's Triple-Science Rate?

At most schools in the table above, Chemistry's own entry count and DfE's published triple-science rate move in lockstep, because Chemistry is usually one of the two subjects setting the ceiling on the shared measure. Redland Green School entered 67 pupils for Biology in 2025, but only 66 for Chemistry and 66 for Physics — and DfE's measure, 66 divided by its 233-pupil cohort, publishes as 28.3%, tracking the lower two subjects rather than Biology's slightly higher count. The same pattern shows at Orchard School Bristol, where Chemistry and Physics both sit at 63 against Biology's 64, and the published rate (35.6%) again tracks the lower pair. At both schools, Chemistry is doing the constraining, not Biology.

Two of Bristol's independent schools break that pattern completely. Queen Elizabeth's Hospital entered 81 pupils for Chemistry GCSE in 2025 — comfortably more than Redland Green's entire Chemistry cohort — yet DfE's own triple-science measure credits the school with just 55.4%, or roughly 56 of its 101 pupils (a figure this page calculates from the published percentage and cohort size, not one DfE prints directly). That leaves a gap of roughly 45% between the raw Chemistry entry count and DfE's own triple-science pupil figure. Clifton High School's gap is starker still: 66 pupils sat Chemistry GCSE, yet the published triple-science rate of 41.9% implies only about 31 of its 74 pupils completed all three sciences together — fewer than half the Chemistry cohort, and also well short of Physics's own 45 entries at that school. In both cases the shortfall cannot be blamed on whichever subject has the fewest raw entries; it reflects how many individual pupils sat all three sciences together, which is a stricter, pupil-level test that a single subject's entry count cannot show on its own.

The practical lesson: a school's Chemistry GCSE entry count and its published triple-science percentage answer two different questions. Reading Queen Elizabeth's Hospital or Clifton High School's triple-science rate alone, without also checking the Chemistry-specific entry count, would understate how many of each school's pupils actually sit separate Chemistry.

Bristol's citywide Attainment 8 score for 2025 was 46.4 — a state-funded-schools figure covering the same 4,131-pupil cohort as the rest of this page, not all 48 Bristol secondaries; DfE reports the city's independent schools as separate rows rather than folding them into the local-authority total. Matched against England's state-funded average of 46.1, Bristol sits fractionally ahead; England's all-schools average of 43.8 (700,688 pupils, a wider population including independent schools nationally) is a different figure, not the matched comparison.

EBacc entry follows the same state-funded population as Attainment 8 above. Bristol's 35.8% rate excludes eight Bristol independent schools — Bristol Grammar School, Redmaids' High School, Badminton School, LPW Independent School, Clifton College, Clifton High School, Collegiate School and Queen Elizabeth's Hospital — each reported by DfE as its own separate row. Matched against England's state-funded average of 40.5%, Bristol's EBacc entry rate sits 4.7 percentage points behind; England's all-schools average of 36.7% (700,688 pupils, a wider population including independent schools nationally) is a different figure, not the matched comparison. Separate-science entry follows the same pattern: Bristol's 22.6% sits fractionally behind England's state-funded 23.3%, a 0.7-point gap. EBacc requires two science GCSEs, and Combined Science satisfies that requirement just as well as separate Chemistry does, so a school's Chemistry-specific entry count — even a low one, like E-Act Merchants' Academy's — says nothing on its own about whether its pupils clear the EBacc science requirement.

Chemistry itself has no dedicated line inside Attainment 8. The measure scores a pupil across four buckets: English and maths, each double-weighted; three "EBacc slots", where science results actually count; and three further "open slots" for any other qualification. There is no Progress 8 figure to set against any of this either: DfE has not calculated Progress 8 for the 2024/25 or 2025/26 key stage 4 cohorts, stating plainly that "there is no KS2 assessment data available to calculate the baseline for Progress 8 for these years due to Covid-19 disruption."

How Should a Chemistry Pupil Read a Combined Science Grade Like 6-5?

A Combined Science result is printed as two digits, such as 6-5 or 4-4, and that format confuses plenty of parents seeing it for the first time. AQA's own grading guidance explains the mechanics: pupils "receive a double grade on a 17-point scale, from 9-9 to 1-1," built from "two equal or adjacent grades" — so a 6-5 is a real, valid outcome, not a typo or an average of two separate marks. There are 17 possible combinations in total, from the top pairing of 9-9 down to the bottom pairing of 1-1.

For a Combined Science pupil, that single pairing is really three subjects marked together: chemistry, biology and physics content is still examined separately within the award, even though only one combined result is issued. A tutor working with a Combined Science pupil aiming for a higher pairing needs to know specifically whether chemistry content is the one holding the pair down — in exactly the way a separate-Chemistry pupil's single grade already tells a parent everything about that one subject on its own.
