GCSE German Tutors in Bristol: The 2025 School-by-School Data

GCSE German is a modern foreign language qualification that only two exam boards, AQA and Pearson Edexcel, currently offer to schools in England. Is GCSE German Entry in Bristol Falling? Seven Years of DfE Data

No single published figure answers that question, so this page queried the Department for Education's own statistics API directly -- the same dataset that sits behind the Compare School and College Performance service -- for Bristol, City of (local authority code E06000023), for every academic year the dataset currently offers: 2018/19 through 2024/25.

German's entry count did fall over that period, but not in a straight line. It opened at 313 pupils in 2018/19, dropped to 227 in 2019/20, recovered slightly to 244 in 2020/21, fell to its lowest point of 197 in 2021/22, then rose across the following two years to 260 and 286, before settling at 266 in 2024/25. That final figure matches the working number this batch's research started from, reproduced independently by this page's own query -- one of two separate checks this page ran against it, the second being a school-by-school reconciliation described below.

Set against its two counterparts, German's position looks weaker than the raw entry count alone suggests, though neither comparison is as simple as its two endpoints imply. French opened at 562 entries in 2018/19 and closed the series at 565 in 2024/25 -- almost the same figure, but not because French held steady in between. It moved to 571, 546 and 611 across the next three years, rose to a peak of 685 in 2023/24, then fell 17.5% to 565 in the single year that followed. The endpoints coincide; the series in between does not. Spanish moved in one direction throughout, rising from 595 entries in 2018/19 to 904 in 2024/25, a 52% increase, from the same API queried the same way. German's own entry count fell 15% across the same span. Measured as a share of the three languages combined, German held 21.3% of Bristol's French-German-Spanish entries in 2018/19; by 2024/25 that share had fallen to 15.3% -- this page's own calculation from the sourced totals above, not a line the Department for Education publishes directly.

Which Bristol Schools Still Enter Pupils for GCSE German?

This page individually checked DfE's 2025 subjects-entered data for 33 Bristol secondary schools: the 16 schools already named on this site's Spanish sibling page, re-verified here at source, plus 17 more schools sourced independently for this page. Eleven of the 33 recorded at least one GCSE German entry; 22 recorded none.

One school accounts for 38% of Bristol's total state-funded GCSE German entry on its own. Oasis Academy Brislington, an open academy that has run in the city since 1 February 2015, entered 101 pupils for GCSE German in 2025 -- 40.4% of its own 250-pupil key stage 4 cohort, and more than double the entries of any other Bristol secondary checked for this page. The same school entered 115 pupils for French and 1 for Spanish that year, and 8.0% of its pupils sit more than one foreign language GCSE, against a 3.4% average across Bristol's state-funded schools and across England as a whole.

No other Bristol secondary this page checked approaches Oasis Academy Brislington's scale. Bristol Metropolitan Academy entered 42 pupils for German in 2025, Cotham School 34, and Redland Green School, Bristol Cathedral Choir School and Fairfield High School 28 each. Two independent schools also recorded German entries: Redmaids' High School, an independent school, entered 12, and Clifton High School, also an independent school, entered 6. St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School entered 3, and Bristol Free School and Ashton Park School entered 1 each.

The remaining 22 of the 33 schools this page checked recorded no GCSE German entries in DfE's 2025 data. That is the honest description of what the data shows for this one year -- DfE's Compare School and College Performance service does not publish a school-level history of subject entries, so this page cannot say whether any of those 22 schools offered German in an earlier year and stopped, only that none appears in the current published figures.

Oasis Academy Brislington's own subjects-entered data shows why its German figure sits so far out of line with the rest of Bristol: 115 French entries sit alongside the 101 German ones in the same 250-pupil cohort, meaning a large share of pupils there are entered for two languages rather than one. GIAS, the Department for Education's own register of schools, records Brislington as an open academy sponsor-led establishment that opened on 1 February 2015 as new provision. GIAS's own Links tab for the school names one predecessor, Brislington Enterprise College (URN 109280), linked 15 December 2014 -- a school GIAS's own record shows closed on 31 January 2015, for academy conversion, the day before Oasis Academy Brislington opened. That is a closure and reopening as a new academy, not a continuously-operating school carrying an old cohort forward under a new name, so Brislington's 2025 figures read as a straightforward count for the school as it exists today, not a total inherited from the establishment it succeeded.

Summed across the 33 schools checked, the state-funded German entries -- Oasis Academy Brislington's 101 plus every other state-funded school's own total -- come to exactly 266 pupils: the same figure the Department for Education's statistics API returns at local-authority level for Bristol. That match, reached through two entirely different DfE data sources, is this page's own check that the school-by-school picture above is complete for the state-funded secondaries it covers.

The reconciliation matters because a local-authority total on its own cannot be trusted to be the sum of its published school rows -- Bristol's total also folds in special schools, which this page's own school-by-school check never claims to have counted individually. What the exact match to 266 shows is narrower and more useful: among the mainstream secondaries this page checked, nothing with a GCSE German entry was missed, and nothing was double-counted. A parent searching for a specific Bristol school not named in the table above can read that as a reasonably confident, though not certain, signal that the school recorded no GCSE German entry in 2025 -- confident because the reconciliation leaves little room for a sizeable unchecked entry to be hiding elsewhere, not certain because this page has not opened every one of Bristol's secondary schools individually.

Which Exam Boards Currently Offer GCSE German?

Checked directly at each board's own site on 16 September 2026, two exam boards currently run a live GCSE (9-1) in German. AQA's is specification 8662, for first teaching in 2024, Ofqual qualification accreditation number 610/3531/2 -- replacing the outgoing 8668 specification, which AQA's own site now labels a legacy specification. Pearson Edexcel's is specification 1GN1, confirmed inside the specification PDF's own text rather than stated on its marketing webpage, first taught from 2024 with first assessment in 2026.

OCR does not offer GCSE German. Its live GCSE qualifications list, read directly rather than assumed from a resolving web address, carries only Latin and Classical Greek among languages -- no German, French or Spanish. That distinction matters here: OCR's own domain returns an HTTP 200 status for a deliberately fabricated, non-existent qualification address, so a URL resolving at ocr.org.uk proves nothing about whether a course actually exists. This page's OCR finding comes from what the live list actually shows, not from a page loading successfully.

WJEC Eduqas does not offer GCSE German either. Its live qualifications page, read directly, lists only AS/A Level German, a separate Language Pathways German unit qualification, and a vocational Level 1/2 Award in Global Business Communication German -- no GCSE. A guessed web address for a GCSE German page at Eduqas's own domain redirects, through two successive 301s, to that same qualifications index, confirming there is no live GCSE German page at Eduqas under any address, not only that one is missing from the visible list.

For a Bristol family, that leaves a simple check: a GCSE German results slip carries the specification code, and only two codes currently apply -- AQA's 8662 or Pearson Edexcel's 1GN1. Either one confirms which board's course a pupil actually sat, and rules out treating an older, discontinued specification's grade boundary as a comparison for a current result.
