A-level Biology in Bromley is taught on three different specifications. Of the 21 open Bromley providers that entered students for it in 2024/25, 17 name their board in their own documents: OCR at 8, AQA at 6 and Edexcel at 3. The 17 that publish an entry grade ask for GCSE grade 6 (13 providers), grade 7 (3) or grade 8 or 9 (1).
Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students across Bromley with the specification their own sixth form enters, whether that is Edexcel's Salters-Nuffield course, AQA or OCR, working from that board's past papers and mark schemes.
Do all of Bromley's sixth forms teach the same A-level Biology?
No. The 17 providers that name a board in their own prospectuses, course guides or exam-board lists split OCR 8, AQA 6 and Edexcel 3, and none of the 17 names Eduqas. The school, not the borough, decides which papers a student sits, so a Bromley Biology tutor needs the school's board before anything else. The two selective grammar schools show it: St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School enters Edexcel and Newstead Wood School enters AQA.
Nor does the trust that runs a school settle it. The five Impact Multi Academy Trust schools in the table split Edexcel 2, OCR 2 and AQA 1, the three Lumero Educational Trust schools OCR 2 and AQA 1, and the three Orion Education schools AQA 2 and OCR 1. Trust membership comes from the register; the boards are each school's own statement. A family cannot infer one from the other.
This page covers the London Borough of Bromley as DfE codes it, local authority 305, and stops at the boundary: a sixth form across the line in Croydon, Bexley or Lewisham is not counted. DfE's value-added dataset holds 27 Bromley provider records. Twenty-four have an A-level Biology row; Baston House School, Darul Uloom London School and London South East Colleges have none, which describes the dataset and says nothing about what those three teach. The register, Get Information About Schools, showed 22 of the 24 as open on 29 September 2026. The other two had closed: Bishop Challoner School on 4 July 2025 and Kings London on 27 March 2026.
One name needs a note before the table. DfE's dataset labels URN 136540 The Ravensbourne School. The register lists it as Orion Ravensbourne, with its record last changed on 22 September 2026, and the school's own Q&A gave 1 September 2026 as the proposed effective date. Anyone checking this page against the register will meet both names.

Entries: DfE Compare School and College Performance, subjects entered at 16 to 18, GCE A level Biology, 2024/25. Boards and entry grades: each school's own website or published document, re-checked on 29 September 2026. Closed providers (Bishop Challoner School, Kings London) are not listed. † The Ravensbourne School's course guide and Farringtons School's courses booklet are image-only files: those two rows were read by eye from the rendered pages and are not machine-checked.
Charles Darwin School's table words its requirement as grade 6s in two separate sciences or Combined Science, with the 6 in the relevant subject or component; the wording is ambiguous about a second science, so the row above gives only the Biology 6. Langley Park School for Boys and Langley Park School for Girls both enter Edexcel, but Hayes School and Ravens Wood School, from the same trust, enter OCR and AQA. Four providers name no board; the section on schools that do not say which board they use, below, says what was searched.
Found your child's school in the table? Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students across Bromley build a programme around that school's board and entry grade, starting from the student's current working grade.
What GCSE Biology grade does a Bromley sixth form ask for?
Of the 17 providers that publish an entry grade for Biology, 13 ask for a grade 6, 3 ask for a 7 and Eltham College asks for a 9 or an 8. Nobody in the 17 asks for less than a 6. The 3 at grade 7 are St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School, Newstead Wood School and The Ravensbourne School. One of the 13, Farringtons School, prints a grade 6 under the heading “relevant subject” without saying which subject, and the St Olave's booklet lists a 7 against Biology without naming the GCSE.
A pair such as 6-6 is how Combined Science is written, because that award carries two GCSE grades; 8/8 asks for both to be 8. Newstead Wood School offers two routes, a 7 in Biology and Chemistry taken separately or 8-7 in double-award science with an 8 in the Biology modules. Eltham College writes that a grade 9 or 8 in the subject is required, and a minimum of 8/8 if Combined Science was studied. The Ravensbourne School asks for 7 in separate Biology or 7-6 in Combined Science.
The Biology grade is rarely the only line. Twelve of the 17 also list a Maths grade in the same row, 5 or 6, and several add English. A student with a 6 in Biology meets the Biology line at 13 of the 17 providers and falls short of it at the other 4, which is why the table above is worth reading row by row and not as a borough average.
Four providers carry an unresolved point. Orion Coopers publishes two different Biology grades. Its entry-criteria PDF, named for September 2026, created on 15 September 2026 according to its file metadata and linked from the page headed for September 2027 entry, says grade 6 in Biology or 6,6 in Combined Science. Its course guide, which the school's curriculum page labels 2026/27, says grade 7 in Biology or 7,7, with 6 in Maths and English. The table uses the newer file, and a family should ask the school which applies. Bromley High School GDST and Chislehurst School for Girls publish no Biology-specific grade that we could find; Bromley High's general rule is grade 7 in the subjects to be studied. Harris Academy Orpington's entry table lists Biology, but its 2026-27 sixth-form prospectus does not mention Biology anywhere in its text, so we publish no grade for it.
Source years vary. Most documents are for 2026 entry or for 2026-27. The guides at The Ravensbourne School and Orion Eden Park and the exam-specification list at Chislehurst School for Girls are for 2025-26, Eltham College's requirements file is named for 2027 entry, and the Newstead Wood School and Bromley High School GDST pages are undated. Hayes School's older course guide, a PDF created on 20 November 2024, asks for a 5 in English and Maths where its 2026 bridging unit says four grade 5s including Maths; the Biology grades in the two agree. Grades can move between intakes, so confirm the current figure with the school. The specification content sits on the national pages: A-level Biology compares the boards, and AQA, Edexcel and OCR each cover one in detail.
How big is a Bromley A-level Biology group?
DfE Compare counts 522 A-level Biology exam entries across the 21 open providers in 2024/25; that total is our own sum of the Compare rows, not a figure DfE publishes. One student sitting Biology once makes one entry. St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School (85) and Newstead Wood School (80) account for 165 of the 522. Ten providers had 14 or fewer entries and four had 3 or 4. The 522 leaves out the two closed providers: Kings London (closed 27 March 2026) had 2 Biology entries, and Bishop Challoner School (closed 4 July 2025) has no Compare page.
St Olave's says on its Biology subject page that an average of 100 students start the A-level course every year. DfE counts 85 entries for 2024/25. The two figures count different things, students starting in one year and entries sitting the exam, and no attrition rate follows from them.
Three schools say in writing that a course depends on numbers. Bishop Justus CofE School states that a course will not run if there is insufficient interest; Bullers Wood School offers all courses subject to staffing and student numbers; Darrick Wood School says courses cancelled for insufficient demand cannot be reinstated. These are general statements about every subject on the option page. Their Biology groups in 2024/25 had 10, 20 and 27 entries.
The smallest groups are the ones DfE withholds. The five providers with 2 to 4 Biology entries on Compare are Babington House School, Harris Academy Orpington, Farringtons School, Orion Eden Park and Kings London (closed 27 March 2026), and all five are suppressed in DfE's value-added data. The smallest group DfE did publish has nine matched entries, at Orion Coopers. That is an observation about these 24 Bromley rows; DfE does not state a threshold here.

Amazing tutors!
We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Biology finally clicked
My daughter was struggling to see how the different topics in A-level Biology connected to each other before her mocks. A few sessions focused on exam technique and past papers made a real difference to her confidence.
Our expert Biology tutors help students across Bromley reach the GCSE grade their target sixth form publishes, then carry on into the A-level course on that school's own board.
How much can DfE's Biology figure for a Bromley school actually show?
DfE's value-added score compares a school's A-level results with those of students nationally who had the same GCSE results. Its technical guide, in the 2018 edition, counts the score in A-level grades: a student who achieves an A where similar students averaged a C scores +2, and a school's score is the average of its students' scores. Only a 95% interval that sits wholly above or wholly below 0 separates a school from the national average.
Two pairs of Bromley groups show how the interval behaves; both can be checked against Table 2. In DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality, Bromley High School GDST and Chislehurst School for Girls each have 19 matched entries, and each 95% interval is 0.96 wide. Bishop Challoner School (closed 4 July 2025), Harris Girls Academy Bromley and The Ravensbourne School each have 11 matched entries, and their intervals are 1.26, 1.27 and 1.27 wide.
Down the whole table the width follows the size of the group: 0.45 wide at St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School (85 matched entries), 0.48 at Newstead Wood School (77) and 1.40 at Orion Coopers (nine). Seven of the 18 published intervals are wider than a full grade, and only those at St Olave's and Newstead Wood are narrower than half a grade. These intervals belong to DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality.
A score has to sit at least half its interval's width away from 0 to clear it. In DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality, that is 0.70 of a grade for a group of nine and a little under a quarter of a grade for a group of 85. For a group of ten or eleven it is roughly two-thirds of a grade.
Which Bromley Biology scores clear zero, and which cannot be told from it?
DfE published 2024/25 A-level Biology scores for 18 of the 24 Bromley providers with a Biology row. Six of the 18 intervals sit wholly to one side of 0, one above and five below. One of the six is Bishop Challoner School, which closed on 4 July 2025, so five of the providers whose intervals clear 0 are open schools. The count in Table 2 is the “Number of entries” field in DfE's value-added data, which counts entries DfE could match to GCSE results; it can sit below a school's own Compare total, as at Newstead Wood School (77 against 80) and Eltham College (13 against 14). For the other 15 open providers the two counts are equal; Bishop Challoner School has no Compare page.

The six intervals wholly to one side of 0:
Langley Park School for Girls has a 2024/25 Biology score of -0.39, with a 95% interval of -0.69 to -0.09 on 48 matched entries; this is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality.
Hayes School has a 2024/25 Biology score of +0.44, with a 95% interval of 0.08 to 0.8 on 34 matched entries; this is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality.
Harris Academy Beckenham has a 2024/25 Biology score of -0.83, with a 95% interval of -1.29 to -0.38 on 21 matched entries; this is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality.
Bullers Wood School has a 2024/25 Biology score of -0.58, with a 95% interval of -1.04 to -0.11 on 20 matched entries; this is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality.
Chislehurst School for Girls has a 2024/25 Biology score of -0.85, with a 95% interval of -1.33 to -0.37 on 19 matched entries; this is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality.
Bishop Challoner School (closed 4 July 2025) has a 2024/25 Biology score of -1.04, with a 95% interval of -1.67 to -0.41 on 11 matched entries; this is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality.
The other twelve intervals include 0. That does not make those schools average; one year's data cannot separate the group from the national average. Six providers have no published score: DfE shows ‘c’ for Babington House School, Farringtons School, Kings London (closed 27 March 2026), Harris Academy Orpington, The Tutorial Foundation and Orion Eden Park. None of the rows above is a ranking, and the boards and entry grades in Table 1 are not offered as explanations of any score. DfE's release is A level and other 16 to 18 results, 2024/25; our A-level Maths tutors in Bromley page covers the same providers' Mathematics scores and A-level tuition in Bromley their all-subject results.
Sitting AQA, Edexcel or OCR Biology at a Bromley sixth form? Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students across Bromley build each programme around that board's papers and the student's own working grade.
What can a family do when a school does not say which board it uses?
Four open providers named no A-level Biology board in anything we read: Harris Academy Beckenham, Harris Girls Academy Bromley, Harris Academy Orpington and Babington House School. We searched each school's sixth-form, curriculum and examinations pages and the prospectus or course guide where one was published, and for Harris Academy Beckenham and Harris Girls Academy Bromley the Harris Sixth Form site as well. Not finding a board describes our search, not the school.
The Harris schools say something about how they are organised. Harris Academy Beckenham's admissions policy describes its sixth form as part of Harris Sixth Form, a consortium of sixth forms at several Harris secondary academies. Harris Girls Academy Bromley says its sixth form is federated with Harris Post 16 and that students on occasion may travel between campuses. Harris Academy Orpington's entry table lists A-level Biology, but its 2026-27 prospectus is silent on it, and the same prospectus says the sixth form has fewer than 100 students.
Babington House School's website gives its ages as 3 to 16 on the homepage and 3 to 18 on its history page, and the sixth-form curriculum page it linked in 2024 returned an error when we tried it on 29 September 2026. DfE Compare records 4 Biology entries there in 2024/25. We claim nothing about its current Biology provision.
A family in that position can ask the school three things: the board and specification code, the entry grade for the intake, and the size of the Biology group. The board decides the papers a tutor works from, so it comes first; the three that Bromley schools name are covered on the Edexcel, AQA and OCR pages, and the Biology tutors page on our site describes the service.
How does Leading Tuition work with Bromley A-level Biology students?
A first call fixes three things: the sixth form, its board and the student's current working grade. A tutor then plans around that board's papers rather than a generic course, works through past-paper questions on a shared whiteboard, marks against the published mark scheme and sends parents notes after each session. The same approach runs whichever of the three boards a Bromley school enters.
A Year 11 student aiming at the grade a Bromley sixth form publishes can start earlier, on GCSE Biology, and move to the A-level course on the school's board afterwards. Our wider tutoring across Bromley page covers our other levels in the borough. Leading Tuition is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026, and 91% of our students achieve their desired grades.
Already know your sixth form and its board? Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students across Bromley turn that into a programme built on the board's own papers and the student's current working grade.
Which exam board do Bromley sixth forms use for A-level Biology?
It depends on the school. Of the 21 open providers with Biology entries in 2024/25, 17 name their board in their own documents: OCR at 8, AQA at 6 and Edexcel (the Salters-Nuffield course) at 3. None of the 17 names Eduqas. Harris Academy Beckenham, Harris Girls Academy Bromley, Harris Academy Orpington and Babington House School name none in anything we could find, so a family at one of those should ask the school for the board and specification code before choosing past papers or a tutor.
What GCSE grade does a Bromley sixth form ask for in Biology?
Of the 17 providers that publish a Biology entry grade, 13 ask for grade 6 or 6-6 in Combined Science, 3 ask for grade 7 (St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School, Newstead Wood School and The Ravensbourne School) and Eltham College asks for grade 9 or 8, or 8/8 in Combined Science. Twelve of the 17 also list a Maths grade in the same row. The documents are for 2026 entry, for 2025-26 or, for Eltham, for 2027 entry, so confirm the current figure with the school.
How many students take A-level Biology in Bromley?
DfE Compare records 522 A-level Biology exam entries at the 21 open Bromley providers that entered students in 2024/25; that total is our own sum of the Compare rows. St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School had 85 and Newstead Wood School 80, together 165 of the 522. Ten providers had 14 or fewer entries and four had 3 or 4. Kings London, which closed on 27 March 2026, had 2 further entries.
Can a school's DfE Biology score tell me how well it teaches Biology?
No. The score is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality, and each comes with a 95% interval. Of the 18 published Bromley intervals, 12 include zero, so the data cannot separate those groups from the national average, and 7 are wider than a full grade because the groups are small. Six sit wholly to one side of zero, five of them at open schools; Bishop Challoner School, the sixth, closed on 4 July 2025.
Why does a Bromley provider have no Biology score?
DfE marks a score 'c' when it withholds the figure. Six Bromley rows carry it: Babington House School, Farringtons School, Kings London (closed 27 March 2026), Harris Academy Orpington, The Tutorial Foundation and Orion Eden Park. The five of those with Compare counts had only 2 to 4 entries. Baston House School, Darul Uloom London School and London South East Colleges have no A-level Biology row in the dataset at all, which describes the dataset and says nothing about what those three teach.
Which Bromley providers in the Biology data have closed or changed name?
Two have closed, according to the register (GIAS) on 29 September 2026: Bishop Challoner School on 4 July 2025 and Kings London on 27 March 2026. Both still appear in DfE's 2024/25 data. One has been renamed: DfE's dataset labels URN 136540 The Ravensbourne School, the register lists it as Orion Ravensbourne with the record last changed on 22 September 2026, and the school's own Q&A gave 1 September 2026 as the proposed effective date.
What if my child's sixth form does not say which board it uses?
Ask the school for the board and the specification code, because the papers differ between Edexcel, AQA and OCR. Four Bromley providers named no Biology board in anything we found: Harris Academy Beckenham, Harris Girls Academy Bromley, Harris Academy Orpington and Babington House School. That describes what we found, not what they teach. Harris Academy Beckenham's admissions policy describes its sixth form as part of the Harris Sixth Form consortium.
How does Leading Tuition support A-level Biology students in Bromley?
Our expert A-level Biology tutors work one-to-one online with students at Bromley sixth forms, starting from the student's school, board and current working grade. Each programme follows the past papers and mark scheme of the board that school enters, whether Edexcel, AQA or OCR, and parents receive notes after each session. 91% of our students achieve their desired grades.
