GCSE Computer Science Is Not the Same Qualification as Creative iMedia or GCSE ICT

A parent searching for a GCSE Computer Science tutor in Cambridge can easily land on the wrong qualification, because Department for Education data files three distinct things under overlapping names. GCSE Computer Science is the academic qualification, examined on the standard 9 to 1 scale and counted toward the EBacc. Creative iMedia and similar vocational IT courses are a different qualification type entirely — DfE’s own subjects-entered tables list the academic GCSE under the subject heading “Computer Studies/Computing” with qualification type “GCSE”, and list a separate vocational subject heading, “Computer Appreciation / Introduction”, with qualification type “Technical Award” — two different DfE rows, checked at source rather than assumed. GCSE Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is older still and no longer exists as an option at all: gov.uk’s own guidance on the withdrawal of legacy GCSEs confirms the last GCSE ICT courses began in September 2016 and the last exam sat in summer 2018, withdrawn because “Department for Education announced content development has ceased”, with Computer Science named as the reformed subject that replaced it.

Four boards offer GCSE Computer Science in England as of September 2026, each confirmed directly against the board’s own live qualification page rather than assumed from memory. AQA’s specification carries the code 8525, listed in AQA’s own current subject catalogue. Pearson Edexcel’s is 1CP2, confirmed on the cover page of Pearson’s own hosted specification PDF — first teaching September 2020, first certification 2022 — and not stated anywhere on Pearson’s general overview HTML page. OCR’s is J277, listed live in OCR’s own GCSE catalogue and carrying the separate Ofqual qualification number 601/8355/X — a different kind of code from the specification number, and worth keeping distinct. WJEC’s Eduqas version is registered on Eduqas’s own qualifications page with the Qual Code C500QS, marked “isLegacy: false” in Eduqas’s own catalogue data, current for first teaching from 2020.

Unlike GCSE Maths and the three separate sciences, GCSE Computer Science carries no Foundation/Higher tier split. Ofqual’s own blog post on GCSE tier entry names the subjects that are tiered — “maths and statistics, the science suite (biology, chemistry, physics and combined science) and modern foreign languages” — and Computer Science is not among them, the same untiered position GCSE History holds. Every Cambridge Computer Science pupil, at any of the city’s eight schools and on any of the four boards, sits the same papers and is graded on the full 9 to 1 scale.

How Many Cambridge Pupils Actually Sit GCSE Computer Science?

Department for Education school performance data publishes each Cambridge secondary’s own subject entry numbers — the actual count of pupils entered, not a rate. Applied to GCSE Computer Science specifically for the 2024/25 cohort, sorted from the highest count to the lowest, and set alongside each school’s entries for the separate vocational “Computer Appreciation / Introduction” Technical Award where any exist:

Every one of Cambridge’s eight state secondaries enters at least some pupils for the academic GCSE — none enters zero, unlike GCSE History, where Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology (CAST) enters none at all. But the spread is still wide: from 7.9% of Trumpington’s 89-pupil cohort up to 47.1% of CAST’s 104-pupil cohort, a six-fold difference between the lowest and highest share. Summed across all eight schools, 205 pupils out of a combined 1,104-pupil cohort sat GCSE Computer Science in 2024/25, 18.6% citywide — a figure no single school sits close to, since six of the eight fall between 13% and 23% and CAST alone pulls the average up from above.

The vocational “Computer Appreciation / Introduction” Technical Award tells a narrower story: only CAST and The Netherhall School enter any pupils for it at all. Netherhall’s own subjects-entered page lists two separate Technical Award rows under that same heading, 14 and 20 pupils, which DfE’s table does not distinguish further — we could not verify from this data alone whether they represent two different vocational qualifications, two exam series, or two providers, and are not stating a specific qualification name for either row.

Why Does the School With Zero GCSE History Enter Almost Half Its Pupils for This?

Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology enters zero pupils for GCSE History — the sibling page on this site covers that finding in full — and it would be easy to read CAST as a school that simply avoids academic subjects outside its STEM core. Its own Computer Science entries say the opposite. CAST’s own Years 9-11 curriculum page, fetched directly this session, sets out a compulsory core of seven GCSEs for every pupil: “English Literature and English Language”, “Mathematics and Statistics” and “Biology, Chemistry, and Physics”. Beyond that core, the page states plainly: “Students select two additional GCSEs from Computer Science, ICT, Health and Social Care, Geography, Psychology, Sports Science, or Construction and the Built Environment.” History is not on that list at all — not offered as an option, not merely unchosen; genuinely absent from the menu.

Computer Science is on that list, as one of seven choices filling only two optional slots, and CAST’s own dedicated Computer Science subpage names the specification directly: “In Year 10 and 11 students follow the AQA Computer Science Specification,” linking to AQA’s own 8525 specification page and describing “37 taught sections over two papers.” With seven options competing for two slots, an even spread would put each subject somewhere near two-sevenths, 28.6%, of the cohort choosing it. Computer Science instead reaches 47.1% — 49 of CAST’s 104 pupils — making it by far the most popular of the seven optional GCSEs DfE’s own entry data can identify at the school, and the single highest GCSE Computer Science share of any of Cambridge’s eight state secondaries.

The pattern is specific to each subject, not a blanket preference for STEM over the humanities generally: CAST’s own curriculum page lists Geography as a live option too (28 entries, 26.9% of its cohort), so the school has not removed every humanity, only History. What CAST’s own published curriculum and DfE’s own entry figures agree on, independently, is that Computer Science and History sit at opposite ends of the same school’s subject choices — one all but universal for a STEM specialist’s optional slots, the other entirely absent from the option list a pupil is given in the first place.

Does Computer Science Change a School’s EBacc Science Rate, or Just Add to It?

Gov.uk’s own EBacc guidance is explicit that Computer Science has a genuine route into the science pillar, not merely a mention in passing: pupils satisfy the EBacc science requirement either through “GCSE combined science – pupils take 2 GCSEs that cover the 3 main sciences, biology, chemistry and physics”, or through “3 single sciences at GCSE – pupils choose 3 subjects from biology, chemistry, physics and computer science.” A pupil taking biology, chemistry and Computer Science satisfies the pillar without ever sitting physics. That makes a natural question worth checking directly rather than assuming: across Cambridge’s eight schools, does Computer Science’s own entry count expand a school’s published EBacc Science-pillar rate beyond what the exact biology-chemistry-physics triple and Combined Science already cover between them, or does it simply sit on top of pupils DfE’s figures already count elsewhere?

The arithmetic, shown with its inputs rather than asserted, answers this at six of the eight schools. Chesterton Community College enters 79 pupils for the exact triple science and 108 for Combined Science — 187 pupils — against a published Science-pillar rate of 98.4% of its 190-pupil cohort, which is 187 pupils exactly. Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology enters 102 for the triple and offers no Combined Science at all, and its own Science-pillar rate of 98.1% of 104 is 102 pupils, again an exact match, despite CAST’s own 49 Computer Science entries. Parkside (87 triple, 40 combined, 127 of a 99.2%-of-128 rate) and The Netherhall School (55 triple, 115 combined, 170 of a 95.5%-of-178 rate) both tile exactly the same way. In each case, the school’s Computer Science entries add no pupils the other two routes had not already counted — consistent with Computer Science functioning at these schools as an additional subject for pupils already covered by triple science or Combined Science, not a substitute pathway that rescues pupils who would otherwise miss the pillar.

Trumpington Community College is the one clear exception. Its 32 triple-science pupils and 51 Combined Science entries sum to 83, yet its published Science-pillar rate is 89.9% of its 89-pupil cohort — 80 pupils, three fewer than the raw sum. We have not been able to identify from DfE’s own published figures what accounts for that three-pupil gap, and are stating it as an open discrepancy rather than guessing at dual entry, a data-entry difference, or an overlap DfE does not publish. What this page cannot verify at all, for any of the eight schools, is which individual pupils’ own three-single-sciences combination actually substitutes Computer Science for physics rather than adding it as a fourth subject — DfE does not publish subject combinations at pupil level, only the separate subject totals used above.

Is Cambridge’s Gender Gap in Computer Science the Same as the National Picture?

We cannot answer that for Cambridge specifically, and are stating that plainly rather than filling the gap with a national figure dressed up as a local one. Department for Education’s subjects-entered pages for all eight of Cambridge’s schools, the same pages this page’s entry figures come from, carry no gender breakdown at all — checked directly, not assumed absent. Several of the entry counts above are small enough (7 at Trumpington, 18 at North Cambridge Academy) that even if a breakdown existed, individual counts would likely be suppressed to protect pupil identities.

What is published, and dated, is the national picture. BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, reported on 21 August 2025 that GCSE Computing entries in England fell 4% to 88,750 in 2025 from 92,778 in 2024, with the decline sharper among boys (-5%) than girls (-1%); the male-to-female entry ratio narrowed slightly from 3.5:1 in 2024 to 3.4:1 in 2025. The same analysis found girls outperforming boys at the top grades: 36% of girls achieved grade 7 or above against 28% of boys. That is an England-wide figure describing the subject nationally, not a claim about any Cambridge school’s own cohort, and we have not attempted to infer a Cambridge-specific split from it.

Programming Is Assessed by Exam Now, Not Coursework — and Teacher Supply Is Improving From a Low Base

A parent who did GCSE Computing themselves may remember a graded practical coursework component; that no longer exists, though the codes and exam formats a Cambridge pupil actually sits still differ by board. Ofqual announced on 23 January 2019 that “programming skills for all GCSEs in Computer Science will be assessed exclusively by exam,” with the change applying to courses starting in autumn 2020 and the previous 20-hour Programming Project running for the last time in summer 2021, after malpractice concerns over leaked coursework tasks. That exam-only principle holds across all four boards, but neither the specification edition nor the exam format is identical between them. AQA’s own specification page shows two live editions of code 8525: a “(Current)” edition with “Last exams 2026”, and a “(Updated)” edition marked “this is the specification for first teaching in September 2025”, with its own exams and certification “available for the first time in May/June 2027” — a pupil starting in September 2026 sits the Updated edition, not one first taught in 2020. OCR’s J277, Pearson’s 1CP2 and Eduqas’s C500QS have each remained a single specification since first teaching in 2020, confirmed on each board’s own current page — OCR describes “our current J277 paper-based qualification for first teach in 2020”, Pearson’s own specification cover reads “First teaching September 2020”, and Eduqas’s own specification cover reads “Teaching from 2020” — with no successor edition found for any of the three. The exam format itself splits two and two: AQA and OCR assess both components on traditional written papers, while Pearson’s own specification names its second paper (code 1CP2/02) an “onscreen examination: 2 hours” worth “50% of the qualification”, and Eduqas’s own specification gives its Component 2 the identical shape — “On-screen examination: 2 hours”, “50% of the qualification” — so two of the four boards examine programming onscreen rather than on paper, not one. The two onscreen exams are not run the same way: Pearson’s own teaching-support page says schools may choose their own Integrated Development Environment, while Eduqas’s own specification requires the standard Python 3 download with no additional libraries installed. OCR still requires centres to complete what it calls a “Practical programming statement”, a compliance declaration confirming pupils had the opportunity to write code during the course; it does not contribute marks and is not a coursework grade.

Teacher supply for the subject is a documented, dated national figure worth stating precisely rather than from memory. The Department for Education’s own Initial Teacher Training Census for 2025/26 reports: “Computing had 723 new entrants in 2025/26, a 46% increase on 2024/25 entrants, and representing 81% of the target (895). This is the highest number of Computing entrants since comparable statistics began in 2012/13.” Recruitment has improved sharply and reached a record high, and it is still short of the Department’s own target — both things are true at once, and neither on its own is the whole picture.

Is There an Attainment 8 Element for Computer Science, and Where Does Progress 8 Fit?

A figure quoted for a Cambridge school’s “Attainment 8 Computer Science element” is describing something that does not exist as its own slot. Attainment 8 measures a pupil’s average achievement across eight qualification slots, and the Department for Education’s own methodology sets out exactly what they are: English language; English literature, double-weighted with English language; maths, double-weighted; three further qualifications that count in the EBacc; and three further qualifications that can be GCSE qualifications or other approved non-GCSE qualifications. Computer Science has no dedicated double-weighted slot the way English and maths do — but unlike History or Geography, it has two distinct doors into the measure: it can count inside the EBacc science bucket, as one of the three single sciences alongside biology and chemistry, or inside the three open slots, the same as any other GCSE.

None of the figures on this page are Progress 8 scores, because none exist for this cohort. The Department for Education has not calculated Progress 8 — for any school, in any local authority — for the 2024/25 or 2025/26 academic years, because the relevant cohorts sat no Key Stage 2 assessments: these were cancelled nationally in academic years 2019/20 and 2020/21 because of Covid-19 disruption, so no baseline exists from which to measure progress. In April 2024 the previous government confirmed there would be no replacement measure for either year. A Progress 8 figure quoted for a Cambridge school in 2025/26 is an older, pre-2024 number, not a current one.

What This Means for Choosing GCSE Computer Science Support in Cambridge

The entries-based picture above changes what sensible Computer Science support looks like, and it depends heavily on which of Cambridge’s eight schools a child attends. At Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology, where Computer Science reaches almost half the cohort through AQA’s own 8525 specification, a pupil is one of a genuinely large group on the same board, with the school’s own curriculum page confirming which specification and structure apply. At Trumpington Community College, where only 7 pupils sit the subject, a pupil is part of a small minority option, and support built around a citywide average risks missing which of the four boards that specific school has chosen — something DfE’s entry data does not publish and this page has not been able to verify for any of the eight schools individually.

We have not independently verified which single exam board each of the other seven schools uses for Computer Science, beyond CAST’s own confirmed use of AQA 8525, nor which specific vocational qualification sits behind the “Computer Appreciation / Introduction” Technical Award entries at CAST and Netherhall — DfE’s own subjects-entered table does not name the qualification beneath that heading, and confirming it for both schools was beyond what this page could verify at source. A family should treat any specific board or route claim for their own child’s school as a question for the school directly, not an assumption from citywide figures.

The same DfE pages used above also publish Cambridgeshire’s county-wide cohort for the measure: 6,836 pupils reached the end of Key Stage 4 in 2024/25. Cambridge’s own eight state secondaries — Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology, Chesterton Community College, The Netherhall School, Parkside Community College, Coleridge Community College, St Bede’s Inter-Church School, North Cambridge Academy and Trumpington Community College — together account for 1,104 of those 6,836 pupils, or 16.1% of the county’s entire Year 11 cohort; the remaining 84% sit in schools spread across the rest of Cambridgeshire, in towns such as Ely, Huntingdon and Wisbech that are not part of the city itself.

Castle School, Cambridge, sits inside the city itself but is a state-funded special school rather than a mainstream secondary — confirmed this session directly against the Department for Education’s own school-search listing, which records it as a “Community special school” spanning “Primary, Secondary and 16 to 18” — so it falls outside the eight-school comparison on this page.
