GCSE Physics and Combined Science Are Different Qualifications, Not Different Tiers of the Same One

Separate Physics is sat as one of three individual sciences, alongside Biology and Chemistry, each examined and graded on its own on the standard 9 to 1 scale. Pearson Edexcel’s equivalent carries the code 1PH0, confirmed directly against Pearson’s own hosted mark scheme for the qualification; OCR’s Gateway Science version is J249, and OCR’s Twenty First Century Science version is J259 — all four confirmed directly against each exam board’s own qualification pages, not assumed from a list.
Combined Science is a different product, not a shorter Physics course. Pupils on this route study all three sciences — Ofqual’s own guidance on the reformed GCSE sciences confirms that pupils taking combined science “will study all three sciences and they'll cover roughly two thirds of the content of the single GCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics” — but sit it as a single double-award qualification, examined across all three subjects together rather than as three separate paper sets. AQA’s version, Combined Science: Trilogy, carries the code 8464; Edexcel’s is 1SC0; OCR’s Gateway Science version is J250; OCR’s Twenty First Century Science version is J260. The result is not one grade but two: a pupil graded 6-6 has not achieved “a grade 6” the way a separate-sciences pupil would; they have achieved a double award pitched at that level across all three sciences combined, and their results slip carries no Physics GCSE at all.
Physics carries a heavier mathematical load than the other two sciences, and it is not a difference small enough to ignore when planning support. AQA’s own published guidance for its GCSE science exams states plainly: “A minimum of 10% of marks will test mathematical skills in biology; 20% in chemistry; and 30% in physics.” For a pupil sitting the Combined Science double award, Ofqual’s own GCSE Subject Level Conditions and Requirements for Combined Science set a separate rule: no less than 20% of the qualification’s total marks must test mathematical skills, allocated between biology, chemistry and physics in a ratio of 1:2:3. The same document confirms Physics carries two distinct lists of equations: one pupils “must be able to recall and apply”, and a second, given on a sheet inserted into the question papers, that pupils “must be able to select and apply”. Neither Biology nor Chemistry carries an equivalent recall-equations requirement, and a revision plan built for either of the other two sciences will under-prepare a pupil for Physics’s own paper structure.

Is Physics Ever the Reason a Cambridge School’s Triple-Science Rate Is Lower?
No — not once among Cambridge’s eight state secondaries. Department for Education’s headline measure for this — “entering for biology, chemistry & physics” — reports one combined percentage per school, and the same comparison page publishes, alongside every individual school’s own figure, Cambridgeshire’s own local-authority average and England’s: the county sits at 32.0% of a 6,836-pupil cohort, and England at 23.3% of 625,647 pupils, both repeated identically across each of the eight schools’ own pages because it is the same comparator on every one. Only Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology (98.1%) and Parkside Community College (68.0%) sit above the county average; the other six sit below it, several markedly so.
DfE’s combined measure counts pupils entered for all three sciences together, and because triple-science entry requires a Physics entry, a school’s own Physics participation rate can never fall below its published triple-science rate — the triple-science figure is a floor under Physics, never a ceiling on it. Chesterton Community College shows the gap directly: 80 of its 190-pupil cohort sit Physics, a participation rate of 42.1%, against a published triple-science rate of 41.6% built from its lower, 79-pupil Chemistry entry. St Bede’s Inter-Church School shows the same gap by a different route: it enters 64 pupils apiece for Biology, Chemistry and Physics, a 35.6% Physics participation rate, yet DfE’s own published triple-science rate of 35.0% works out to 63 pupils of its 180-pupil cohort — one fewer than the 64 entered individually for each science, meaning at least one of those 64 Physics entrants did not also sit both Biology and Chemistry. At the other six schools, where the published rate divides out to an exact match with the lowest of the three subject entries, Physics’s own participation rate and the triple-science rate are identical, not merely close.
Why Isn’t Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology a Fifth Comparable School?
Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology’s Physics count looks like the outright winner in the table above, and by raw numbers it is — but CAST is not a fifth comparable data point alongside the other seven, in a way that matters for how a family should read it. CAST is a University Technical College with a STEM specialism, admitting its main cohort at age 13 rather than the age 11 typical of Cambridge’s other seven state secondaries, according to its own Department for Education listing.
CAST’s current Admission Policy sets a Published Admission Number of 104 places for its main Year 9 intake and a minimum of 30 for Year 12 external applicants — but the policy sets no Published Admission Number for Year 10 at all. A family wanting a Year 10 place applies through the Academy’s ordinary in-year admissions process, the same route used for a mid-cycle move into Year 9 or Year 11, rather than a second scheduled intake round. A pupil admitted through the scheduled Year 9 round has had at most three years at CAST before sitting GCSEs, not the five years typical of an age-11 intake at Chesterton or Parkside — but a pupil who joined through in-year admission in Year 10 could have arrived at almost any point in the two years before GCSEs, and no single figure describes how long every such pupil has actually been enrolled.

Where Does Physics Sit in Attainment 8? There’s No Physics Element
A figure quoted for a Cambridge school’s “Attainment 8 Physics element” is describing something that does not exist. Attainment 8 measures a pupil’s average achievement across eight qualification slots, and the Department for Education’s own methodology sets out exactly what they are: “English language; English literature (double weighted providing both English language and English literature are taken); maths (double weighted); three further qualifications that count in the English Baccalaureate (EBacc); and three further qualifications that can be GCSE qualifications.” Science has no dedicated, double-weighted slot the way English and maths do. A Physics result — separate or as part of Combined Science — can only count inside the three EBacc slots, alongside a language and history or geography, or inside the three open slots, never as a slot of its own.
Physics still has a defined route into the EBacc measure, and it works the same way whichever science qualification a pupil sits. The Department for Education’s own EBacc guidance sets out the choice: “GCSE combined science – pupils take 2 GCSEs that cover the 3 main sciences, biology, chemistry and physics” or “3 single sciences at GCSE – pupils choose 3 subjects from biology, chemistry, physics and computer science.” A pupil on the Combined Science route at Coleridge Community College satisfies the EBacc science requirement just as fully as a pupil sitting separate Physics at Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology; the qualification differs, and the mathematical demand differs, as the section above shows, but the EBacc credit for science does not.
None of the figures on this page are Progress 8 scores, because none exist for this cohort. The Department for Education has not calculated Progress 8 — for any school, in any local authority — for the 2024/25 or 2025/26 academic years: “It is not possible to calculate Progress 8 for academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26. This is because there is no KS2 prior attainment data available to use to calculate Progress 8 when the relevant cohorts reach the end of KS4 as primary tests and assessments were cancelled in academic years 2019/20 and 2020/21 due to COVID-19 disruption.” In April 2024 the previous government confirmed there would be no replacement measure for either year. At Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology or Parkside Community College, where 102 and 87 pupils respectively sit separate Physics, a pupil is working to a full, standalone specification in which at least 30% of the marks test mathematical skills, with two distinct lists of equations to master — a materially heavier maths load than either Biology or Chemistry carries on their own papers, even though all three are reported on the same 9-to-1 scale.

Cambridge’s own eight state secondaries — Chesterton Community College, Parkside Community College, North Cambridge Academy, Coleridge Community College, Trumpington Community College, St Bede’s Inter-Church School, Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology and The Netherhall School — together account for 1,104 of those 6,836 pupils, or 16.1% of the county’s entire Year 11 cohort; the remaining 84% sit in schools spread across the rest of Cambridgeshire, in towns such as Ely, Huntingdon and Wisbech that are not part of the city itself.
