Chelmsford is a city in Essex, so DfE files its sixth forms under Essex. Cutting Essex's 58 Mathematics rows for 2024/25 by the GIAS district leaves 11 Chelmsford schools: 10 carry a score and Hylands School shows DfE's marker c. Those 10 hold 428 matched entries, and none of their 95% intervals lies wholly above or below zero. Twelve of Essex's 49 scored rows do clear zero; none is in Chelmsford district.

Our expert A-level maths tutors help Chelmsford sixth-formers one-to-one online with the pure and applied papers, building each programme around the student's own sixth form and exam board.

Which sixth forms count as Chelmsford, and why is the Essex table the wrong one?

DfE's institution-level table groups schools by local authority, and Chelmsford is not one: the authority is Essex (LA 881). We queried the DfE statistics API for the 2024/25 revised release, published 23 April 2026, with the qualification set to GCE A level, the exam cohort to A level cohort and the subject to Mathematics. Every school whose establishment code begins 881 came back as 58 rows. Of those, 49 hold a numeric score and 9 read c in every column.

To find Chelmsford inside that county table we joined each row by URN to the DistrictAdministrative field in the GIAS bulk download for 31 October 2026. The 58 rows fall into 12 districts: Chelmsford 11, Brentwood 7, Epping Forest 6, Colchester 6, Basildon 5, Uttlesford 4, Braintree 4, Rochford 4, Harlow 3, Tendring 3, Castle Point 3 and Maldon 2. A county figure would put Chelmsford's 428 matched entries beside the 1,961 across all 49 scored Essex rows, so this page uses only the 11 Chelmsford rows. All 11 postcodes begin CM1, CM2 or CM3, which agrees with the district cut.

GIAS lists the admissions policy of Chelmsford County High School for Girls and King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford as Selective. It lists New Hall School as an Other independent school. All 11 carry a sixth form in GIAS's own field. The source for the table is the Get Information About Schools service, and the scores below come from DfE's A level and other 16 to 18 results release for 2024/25.

What are the 10 Chelmsford A-level Mathematics scores?

The table lists every Chelmsford-district row in order of matched entries, largest first, not in order of score, because a difference between two point estimates is not a finding. Each score sits beside its own 95% interval and the number of matched entries DfE used. A score is a finding only if its whole interval lies above or below zero, and an interval with a bound of exactly 0.00 would not count. Matched entries are DfE's count of students in the value-added calculation; they are not the same as the number of Mathematics entries a school makes in total.

The matched entries run from 11 at William de Ferrers School to 156 at King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford. DfE shows the marker c in all four columns for Hylands School, so this page reports no score for it. For the other 10, the lower bound is below 0.00 and the upper bound is above 0.00 on every row.

What does each Chelmsford interval allow?

An interval is the stretch of scores consistent with the evidence in a cohort of that size. DfE builds it as the score plus or minus 1.96 standard errors, and the standard error falls as the number of entries rises. The widths below, upper bound minus lower bound, follow the matched entries closely.

The Sandon School1.3313
William de Ferrers School1.4511

King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford has the narrowest interval, 0.39 wide, on 156 matched entries: its score is 0.14 (-0.06 to 0.33) on 156 matched entries. Chelmsford County High School for Girls follows at 0.56 wide: 0.08 (-0.20 to 0.36) on 75 matched entries. At the other end, William de Ferrers School has the widest at 1.45 wide: its score is -0.63 (-1.36 to 0.09) on 11 matched entries, and its upper bound of 0.09 is above zero, so the row does not clear zero. The Sandon School, with 13 matched entries, is 1.33 wide: 0.44 (-0.23 to 1.10) on 13 matched entries.

The middle of the table reads the same way. Moulsham High School scores -0.16 (-0.51 to 0.19) on 48 matched entries. New Hall School, an independent school in GIAS, scores -0.28 (-0.72 to 0.15) on 31 matched entries. Great Baddow High School scores 0.03 (-0.43 to 0.49) on 27 matched entries, St John Payne Catholic School, Chelmsford scores 0.35 (-0.09 to 0.80) on 29 matched entries, and The Boswells School scores 0.17 (-0.35 to 0.68) on 22 matched entries. Chelmer Valley High School scores -0.02 (-0.62 to 0.58) on 16 matched entries. Each of those intervals includes 0.00, so none of the ten rows is a finding on its own.

A school's interval says little about one student's gaps. Our expert A-level maths tutors work one-to-one online with Chelmsford sixth-formers from their own mock results, whichever sixth form they attend.

Why are two scores 1.07 apart not a finding?

The Sandon School's score is 0.44 (-0.23 to 1.10) on 13 matched entries. William de Ferrers School's is -0.63 (-1.36 to 0.09) on 11 matched entries. The point estimates are 1.07 apart, which looks like a large gap. Their intervals, -0.23 to 1.10 on 13 matched entries and -1.36 to 0.09 on 11 matched entries, overlap across a stretch 0.32 wide, so the data cannot separate them. Neither row clears zero: the Sandon interval has a lower bound below 0.00, and the William de Ferrers interval has an upper bound of 0.09, which is above 0.00.

This is the practical reading rule for a family. A single score can be quoted to two decimal places without that precision meaning anything for a cohort of 11 or 13. Look at the interval first and the matched entries second, and treat the point estimate as the centre of a range, not as a position in a league table.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

How do the Mathematics rows sit beside the other DfE rows for the same schools?

DfE publishes A-level value added under several subject labels, and each label is its own measure with its own interval and its own matched entries. The table sets out the three labels for the 11 Chelmsford-district schools: Mathematics, All subjects and Mathematics (Further). Read each cell on its own terms. The Mathematics (Further) query returned 8 rows, so three schools have no row in it, and three of the 8 read c.

Taken one label at a time, the table shows what DfE published. Chelmsford County High School for Girls has a Mathematics (Further) row of 0.63 (0.07 to 1.18) on 17 matched entries. St John Payne Catholic School, Chelmsford has an All subjects row of 0.14 (0.02 to 0.27) on 270 entries, New Hall School 0.26 (0.14 to 0.37) on 317 entries, and The Boswells School 0.17 (0.04 to 0.30) on 265 entries. Each of those rows is a progress measure for the group of students DfE counted under that label.

Whichever sixth form a student attends, our expert A-level maths tutors help Chelmsford students one-to-one online with the exam board and mock results in front of them, from a first diagnostic session through to the final papers.

What does DfE's method say about private tuition and group scores?

A value-added score is a progress measure for a group of students, not a judgement of how well any one teacher taught, and it is not a grade. DfE's technical guidance for the 16 to 19 measures describes how it is built. Each student's prior attainment, which for academic qualifications is their average GCSE attainment only, places them in one of up to 20 bands. DfE then compares the student's result with the national average for others in the same band taking the same qualification. The difference is the student's value-added score, and a school's score aggregates those differences.

The same guidance explains why every score carries an interval. It says that a school is not the only influence on its students' attainment and names "any private tuition they receive" among the random factors that make a considerable impact, which is why confidence intervals capture the uncertainty. For a family, that means a school's Mathematics score cannot tell you whether a particular student needs a tutor. It describes a past cohort, in a past academic year, as a group.

The data used here are the revised 2024/25 release, published 23 April 2026. DfE describes it as covering the results of students at the end of 16 to 18 study in 2024/25.

How many students sit A level Mathematics in England in 2026?

Ofqual's provisional entries release, published 9 June 2026, counts 109,875 A level Mathematics entries in England for summer 2026, against 105,755 in summer 2025, a rise of 3.9%. Further mathematics is counted separately at 20,340 entries. Total A level entries for summer 2026 are 845,485. All of these are provisional counts. Ofqual's own note says the Mathematics grouping can include students who enter more than one qualification in the subject group, so entries and students are not the same count.

Against that national count, the Chelmsford rows above are small groups: the 10 scored rows hold 428 matched entries between them.

How does one-to-one online A-level maths tuition work for Chelmsford students?

Leading Tuition teaches A-level Maths one-to-one online, with a shared whiteboard, so a Chelmsford student can work with an expert A-level maths tutor from any of the 11 sixth forms in the table, or from a sixth form that is not in it. A programme begins with a short diagnostic against the student's own sixth form, specification and exam board, then works through that student's own past papers and marks them against the real mark scheme. Progress is reviewed against the student's own target, not against any figure in this page.

91% of our students achieve their desired grades, and we are rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot. The plan for each student follows the topics that student finds hardest, taken from their own mock results and past papers.

Book a call and you get an expert A-level maths tutor and a plan. Our tutors work one-to-one online with Chelmsford sixth-formers on the pure and applied papers, from the student's own mock results and past papers.

Frequently asked questions

Which Chelmsford sixth forms does DfE give an A-level Mathematics score for?

For 2024/25, DfE returns 11 Chelmsford-district rows from Essex's 58, matched to the GIAS district by URN. Ten carry a score: Chelmsford County High School for Girls, Chelmer Valley High School, King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford, Great Baddow High School, New Hall School, Moulsham High School, St John Payne Catholic School, Chelmsford, The Boswells School, The Sandon School and William de Ferrers School. Hylands School shows the marker c. The ten scored rows hold 428 matched entries between them.

Does any Chelmsford A-level Mathematics score clear zero?

Not in the 2024/25 rows. A score clears zero only if its whole 95% interval lies above or below 0.00, and each of the 10 Chelmsford intervals spans zero. William de Ferrers School's runs from -1.36 to 0.09 on 11 matched entries, so its upper bound of 0.09 sits above zero. Across Essex, 12 of the 49 scored Mathematics rows do clear zero, and none of those 12 is in Chelmsford district.

Why does Hylands School show c instead of a score?

DfE shows the marker c in all four columns of the Hylands School Mathematics row for 2024/25: the score, the lower and upper bounds and the matched entries. DfE uses c for a figure it does not publish, so this page gives no score for Hylands. It says nothing about the school's Mathematics results. Hylands School does have an All subjects row, -0.31 (-0.88 to 0.26) on 14 entries, which is a separate DfE measure.

Is a school's value-added score a grade?

No. A value-added score is a progress measure for a group of students: DfE places each student in one of up to 20 bands by prior attainment, compares the result with the national average for that band, and aggregates the differences. King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford's Mathematics score of 0.14 (-0.06 to 0.33) on 156 matched entries is not a grade and not a statement about any one student or teacher.

Do these scores show whether private tuition works?

No. DfE's 16 to 19 technical guidance says a school is not the only influence on students' attainment and names private tuition among the random factors that affect results, which is why every score has a 95% interval of the score plus or minus 1.96 standard errors. A Chelmsford Mathematics score describes a cohort of between 11 and 156 matched entries as a group, not the effect of any individual's tutoring.

Do you teach A-level Maths one-to-one online to Chelmsford students?

Yes. Leading Tuition teaches A-level Maths one-to-one online with a shared whiteboard. A programme begins with a diagnostic against the student's own sixth form and exam board, then uses the student's own past papers marked against the real mark scheme. 91% of our students achieve their desired grades, and our rating is 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot. You can book a free consultation on this page to start.

How many A level Mathematics entries are there in England for summer 2026?

Ofqual's provisional entries release, published 9 June 2026, counts 109,875 A level Mathematics entries for summer 2026, up 3.9% from 105,755 in summer 2025. Further mathematics has 20,340 entries and all A level subjects together have 845,485. These are provisional counts, and Ofqual notes that a Mathematics entry count can include students who enter more than one qualification in the subject group.
