Croydon is a London borough and its own local authority for DfE's 2024/25 A-level Mathematics value-added dataset, which covers 25 providers that entered candidates that year. Three of those 25 — The Cedars School, Old Palace of John Whitgift School and Cambridge Tutors College — have since closed, the most recent on 1 September 2025, a status checked directly against the Get Information about Schools register rather than assumed.

Are All 25 Providers in This 2024/25 Dataset Still Open?

No. Three of the 25 providers named in DfE's 2024/25 A-level Mathematics value-added dataset for Croydon have closed since that cohort sat its exams, and this page checked each one directly against the Get Information about Schools (GIAS) register rather than assuming a school named in a 2024/25 dataset is still admitting students in late 2026.

The Cedars School closed on 1 September 2025. GIAS records the reason as “Result of Amalgamation/Merger” and lists no successor establishment linked to its URN. Old Palace of John Whitgift School closed on 31 July 2025, recorded on GIAS as “Closure”; its only linked establishment is a historical predecessor, Croham Hurst School, not a successor. Cambridge Tutors College — one of the two providers whose 2024/25 figures DfE suppresses for cohort size — closed on 30 June 2025, also recorded as “Closure”, again with only a historical predecessor link and no successor named.

None of the three closures changes what those schools' 2024/25 students actually achieved that year: the value-added figures describe a cohort that sat real exams while each school was still open. What it changes is what the data can tell a family choosing between Croydon's current sixth forms. A figure attached to a provider that no longer exists is a historical record, not an option on a list, and this page treats the two differently throughout.

How Many Croydon Sixth Forms Actually Have A-Level Maths Outcome Data?

Croydon is a single London borough and its own local authority for this dataset. DfE's sweep uses local authority code 306, and Croydon is not combined with, or split across, any neighbouring borough — unlike Guildford, Twickenham or Wimbledon, which sit inside larger counties or boroughs for the same dataset. A reader whose child attends a school just over the boundary, in Sutton or Bromley, is looking at a different local authority's figures entirely, not a gap in Croydon's own.

Filtering DfE's institution-level subject value-added dataset to A-level Mathematics — subject id 5R0jd, not the separate Mathematics (Further) or Mathematics (Statistics) datasets, which use their own subject ids and their own separate model — and to Croydon's local authority returns 25 provider rows for the 2024/25 academic year. DfE publishes a value-added score for 23 of those 25; the remaining two, Cambridge Tutors College and Shirley High School Performing Arts College, are marked 'c' for suppressed, because DfE does not publish a score calculated from too small a matched cohort.

Those 25 rows are every provider DfE's own sweep returns for Croydon and A-level Mathematics in 2024/25 — not a shortlist and not a sample. A school or college with A-level Mathematics students that does not appear here either did not enter candidates for the qualification that year, or entered too few for DfE to publish a matched figure at all.

What Does DfE's A-Level Maths Value-Added Score Actually Measure?

DfE's value-added score compares a school's actual A-level Mathematics grades against the grades pupils with the same prior attainment achieved nationally in the same subject, so it is a measure of progress from each pupil's own starting point rather than a measure of the grades themselves. A score of zero means a school's students, on average, achieved what pupils with similar prior attainment achieved nationally in Mathematics; a positive score means they did better than that national comparison, a negative score worse.

This is DfE's own progress measure for the pupils who sat exams as part of the 2024/25 cohort, and it is not a measure of teaching quality: it says nothing on its own about a department's staffing or curriculum, and it cannot be read against a school's score in a different subject, because Mathematics and Further Mathematics are scored on entirely separate, subject-specific models even at the same school. A score is only a genuine finding when its 95% confidence interval sits entirely on one side of zero — a school whose interval straddles zero has a result DfE's own model cannot distinguish from an average one, whatever the single number reads.

Does Every A-Level Maths Entry Count Toward These Scores?

Not necessarily. DfE's value-added dataset labels the entry figure attached to each score “Number of entries” — the dataset's own field name — and at three of the four Croydon providers checked against their own separate subjects-entered table, that figure is lower than the school's total Mathematics exam entries for the same year.

Harris Federation Post 16 made 216 A-level Mathematics exam entries in 2024/25 according to DfE's Compare School and College Performance subjects-entered table; its value-added dataset's Number of entries for the same year is 211, five fewer, 2.3% of its Mathematics entries. Trinity School made 91 entries against 90 counted, one fewer. Whitgift School made 82 entries against 74 counted, eight fewer — 9.8% of its Mathematics entries, the largest gap of the four providers checked. Riddlesdown Collegiate is the exception: 84 entries and 84 counted, no gap at all.

DfE's own documentation for this specific field does not spell out why an individual entry falls outside the Number of entries figure used for value added, so this page states what the two tables show side by side rather than a reason DfE has not published for this dataset. What is clear from the comparison itself is that a school's Mathematics cohort and its value-added cohort are not always the same number, and the gap is not the same size at every school.

Which Croydon Maths Departments' Value-Added Intervals Clear Zero?

Seven of the 23 published Croydon A-level Mathematics value-added scores have a 95% confidence interval that sits entirely on one side of zero — DfE's own threshold for treating a score as a genuine finding rather than statistical noise — and all seven of those sit below zero. None of Croydon's 23 published scores clears zero on the upward side. That is what this dataset settles: no provider in Croydon's 2024/25 A-level Mathematics figures has a value-added score DfE's own model can distinguish from average and call above it. It does not settle that Croydon's schools are worse at teaching Mathematics than schools elsewhere, and the seven figures below are not a ranking of each other or of the sixteen published scores whose interval includes zero.

The table below lists all 25 providers in the dataset, sorted by DfE's own Number of entries figure from largest to smallest, never by score — a school with a cohort of over 200 and a school with a cohort of six are not on a comparable scale, and ordering by score would read as though they were. The three closed providers are marked in the final column; their figures remain published because their students sat real exams in 2024/25.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Croydon College's 2024/25 value-added score for A-level Mathematics — DfE's own progress measure for that year's entrants, not a measure of teaching quality — is -0.63, with a 95% confidence interval of -1.09 to -0.17, from 27 entries.

Harris Federation Post 16's score, on the same DfE progress measure and again not a measure of teaching quality, is -0.28, with a 95% confidence interval of -0.45 to -0.12, from 211 entries — the largest number in any Croydon row, which is why its interval is the narrowest of the seven that clear zero. That figure is an aggregate rather than one provider's cohort: it is the exact sum of the nine linked academies that carry their own row, four of which are in Croydon and already appear in the table above (Harris City Academy Crystal Palace 57, Harris Academy South Norwood 24, Harris Academy Purley 16 and Harris Invictus Academy Croydon 10, together 107), while the other five are registered in Bromley, Southwark and Merton.

St Joseph's College's score, a progress measure for its 2024/25 entrants rather than an assessment of teaching quality, is -1.05, with a 95% confidence interval of -1.52 to -0.58, from 26 entries.

Coloma Convent Girls' School's score — DfE's value-added progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality — is -0.55, with a 95% confidence interval of -1.04 to -0.06, from 24 entries. This school's separate GCSE-stage figures, a different measure from a different year group, are covered on our GCSE results across Croydon page rather than repeated here.

Harris City Academy Crystal Palace's score, again DfE's progress measure for that cohort and not a judgement on teaching, is -0.35, with a 95% confidence interval of -0.67 to -0.03, from 57 entries.

BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology's score — a DfE progress measure for its 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality — is -1.25, with a 95% confidence interval of -1.85 to -0.65, from 16 entries: the smallest cohort and the lowest score of the seven, at a school whose own name states its specialism is performing arts and technology, not Mathematics.

Harris Academy South Norwood's score, on the same DfE progress measure and not a measure of teaching quality, is -0.63, with a 95% confidence interval of -1.12 to -0.14, from 24 entries.

Read together, these seven figures describe one subject, one cohort and one academic year each. A family weighing two Croydon sixth forms against each other on the strength of this page alone would be asking DfE's own model a question it does not answer: it was built to compare a school's pupils against a national baseline, not to rank one Croydon provider against another.

How Does Leading Tuition Work With Croydon's A-Level Maths Students?

Whichever of Croydon's sixth forms or colleges a student attends — and whichever exam board it enters them for, AQA, Edexcel or OCR — our tutors build every A-level Mathematics programme from that student's own specification and past papers, not a generic syllabus. Our A-level Maths subject guide sets out how the three boards' specifications differ paper by paper; this page is about outcomes at named Croydon providers, not board structure, so that detail lives there rather than being repeated here.

A diagnostic assessment against a student's own school and current working grade comes first, so a tutor can see immediately whether the priority is closing a gap in Pure content, building confidence in Statistics or Mechanics, or working ahead of a sixth form's own scheme of work. Sessions run one-to-one online with a shared whiteboard, working through past-paper questions and marking against the real mark scheme, and progress is reviewed against a student's own target grade at agreed intervals. See our Maths tutoring service for how a full programme is structured across a school year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Croydon providers appear in DfE's 2024/25 A-level Maths value-added data?

Twenty-five providers appear in DfE's institution-level A-level Mathematics value-added dataset for Croydon's 2024/25 cohort, drawn from local authority code 306. DfE publishes a value-added score for 23 of those 25; the other two, Cambridge Tutors College and Shirley High School Performing Arts College, are suppressed because their matched cohort is too small to publish under DfE's own rules. Croydon is a single local authority for this dataset, not combined with any neighbouring borough, so every provider on this page is registered in Croydon. One of them, Harris Federation Post 16, is a sixth form centre whose linked academies sit in Croydon, Bromley, Southwark and Merton, so its row also covers students registered outside the borough.

Are all the schools and colleges in this Croydon A-level Maths dataset still open?

No. Three of the 25 providers have closed since the 2024/25 cohort sat its exams: The Cedars School on 1 September 2025, Old Palace of John Whitgift School on 31 July 2025, and Cambridge Tutors College on 30 June 2025. All three closures are checked directly against the Get Information about Schools register, and none has a successor establishment recorded there. Their 2024/25 figures remain valid as a historical record of that year's cohort, but none is a sixth form a family can apply to.

What does a value-added score for A-level Maths actually measure?

DfE's value-added score compares a school's A-level Mathematics grades against the grades achieved nationally by pupils with the same prior attainment, so it measures progress from each pupil's own starting point rather than the grades themselves. It is DfE's own progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality, and it cannot be compared across subjects — a school's Mathematics score is calculated on an entirely separate model from its Further Mathematics score. A score only counts as a genuine finding when its 95% confidence interval sits entirely on one side of zero.

Why does a Croydon school's Mathematics entry count sometimes differ between DfE tables?

DfE's value-added dataset labels its entry figure 'Number of entries', and at three of the four Croydon providers checked against their own separate subjects-entered table, that number is lower than the school's total Mathematics exam entries for the same year. Whitgift School, for example, made 82 A-level Mathematics entries in 2024/25 on its subjects-entered table but shows 74 in the value-added dataset, eight fewer. Riddlesdown Collegiate is the exception among the four checked, with 84 entries and 84 counted.

Do any Croydon sixth forms have an A-level Maths value-added score that clears zero?

Yes — seven of Croydon's 23 published scores have a 95% confidence interval that sits entirely on one side of zero, and all seven sit below it; none clears zero on the upward side. That means no Croydon provider in this dataset has an A-level Mathematics value-added score DfE's own model can distinguish from average and call above it. It does not mean Croydon's schools are worse at teaching Mathematics than schools elsewhere — the figures describe one subject, one cohort and one year.

Does Leading Tuition offer A-level Maths tuition for every Croydon sixth form and college?

Yes. Our tutors work with A-level Mathematics students at Croydon sixth forms and colleges across the borough's independent and state-funded providers, building every programme from a student's own school, specification and current working grade rather than a generic syllabus. Sessions cover Pure content alongside whichever applied options a student's board and school enter them for, Statistics, Mechanics or both, and run one-to-one online with a shared whiteboard for working through past papers.

Which exam boards do Croydon sixth forms use for A-level Maths?

Croydon's sixth forms and colleges are not restricted to a single exam board for A-level Mathematics; AQA, Edexcel and OCR are all in use across the borough, and a school's choice of board does not appear in DfE's value-added dataset itself. Our tutors work from whichever specification a student's own sixth form has entered them for, and our A-level Maths subject guide sets out how the three boards' papers differ.

What happened to Old Palace of John Whitgift School and The Cedars School?

Both appear in Croydon's 2024/25 A-level Mathematics value-added data because their students sat exams that year, and both have since closed. Old Palace of John Whitgift School closed on 31 July 2025; GIAS records the reason as 'Closure' and lists only a historical predecessor link, Croham Hurst School, not a successor. The Cedars School closed on 1 September 2025, recorded as 'Result of Amalgamation/Merger', also with no successor establishment named in its GIAS record.
