Guildford County School's A-level Chemistry handbook tells its own students that if their maths is not secure at grade 7/8 on the higher tier GCSE paper, they may struggle with parts of the course. George Abbot School, in the same borough, admits to A-level Chemistry on grade 6 in GCSE Maths. Nine sixth forms inside Guildford Borough entered students for the subject in 2024/25, and eight have a published value-added score.

Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors help students across Guildford with the written papers, the level 2 maths that carries a fifth of the marks, and the calculation-heavy topics that decide grades — whichever board their sixth form enters them for.

Those two statements are not in conflict — one is a minimum for admission, the other a department's judgement about coping with the course — but a family reading only one of them forms a different view of the same subject in the same borough. This page sets out what Guildford's sixth forms publish about A-level Chemistry in their own documents, and what the Department for Education's 2024/25 figures for the nine borough departments can and cannot tell you.

What Guildford County School Tells Its Own Chemists About GCSE Maths

The mathematical demand in A-level Chemistry is fixed nationally rather than by the school. The Department for Education's prescribed subject content requires that "the assessment of quantitative skills will include at least 10% level 2 or above mathematical skills for biology and psychology, 20% for chemistry and 40% for physics", and AQA repeats the 20% in its A-level Chemistry specification 7404/7405. Our A-level Chemistry page covers what that requirement means topic by topic. What belongs to Guildford is how differently two of its sixth forms translate the same national figure into advice for their own applicants.

Guildford County School publishes a subject handbook for each of its A-levels, in one series, updated for 2026. Its Chemistry handbook names AQA as the board, linking to the AQA Chemistry 7404-7405 page, and carries a block headed "Key Assessment Criteria" setting out how the course is weighted: a maximum of three exams, no coursework or controlled assessment, "Practical endorsement Yes", "Practical based marks on exams 15%" and "Maths (Higher tier GCSE) marks on exams 20%".

Underneath that block the handbook does something most school documents do not. It tells students where the bar actually sits: "20% of the overall assessment of A-level Chemistry will contain mathematical skills equivalent to Level 2 or above. This means that if your maths skills are not secure at a grade 7/8 or above on the higher tier GCSE paper, you may struggle with some parts of the course."

That is a department describing its own subject, in writing, to its own applicants. George Abbot School's Sixth Form Subject Guide and Entry Requirements for 2026-27 comes at the same subject from the other end, listing Chemistry under the exam board Edexcel and requiring, on top of at least four grade 4s, either "6-6 in Combined Science AND 6 in Maths" for combined science students or "6 in Chemistry AND 6 in Maths AND 6 in Biology or Physics" for those who took triple science.

A grade 6 in GCSE Maths therefore satisfies George Abbot's published entry requirement for A-level Chemistry while sitting below the standard Guildford County's Chemistry department warns its own students about. For a family choosing between Guildford sixth forms, or for a student who has already met one school's entry grade and is finding the first term harder than expected, that gap is worth knowing about in advance.

The distinction belongs to Chemistry rather than to the sciences in general, and one school's own paperwork shows it. We searched Guildford County's A-level Biology handbook, from the same series and the same year, for "mathematical skills", "Level 2", "grade 7", "Maths (Higher tier" and "10%". None of those appears in the document we read. The Biology handbook carries no "Key Assessment Criteria" block at all; its only mathematics-related wording is a line listing "Numeracy and the application of mathematical concepts in a practical context" among the areas in which practicals are assessed. Same school, same series, same year, and the maths warning appears under one subject and not the other. Our A-level Biology tutors in Guildford page covers the nine schools for that subject.

Boards differ across the borough, which matters when a student changes school or works from past papers. Where a board is confirmed the specification is worth reading directly, and we keep separate guidance for AQA A-level Chemistry and Edexcel A-level Chemistry. Tormead School's own Chemistry page states that from Year 9 its pupils study "the Edexcel IGCSE (9-1) in Chemistry", but an A-level awarding body was not found on the pages we read, so a Tormead family should ask the department rather than assume the GCSE board carries over.

Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors help students across Guildford who met their sixth form's entry grade but are finding the level 2 maths unfamiliar — working through moles, titration and equilibrium calculations in the format their own board sets.

What That Handbook Says About Practical Work, and What the Biology One Does Not

The same "Key Assessment Criteria" block records two more figures a Guildford student can act on: practical-based marks are 15% of the exams, and the practical endorsement is marked "Yes". Both describe the national arrangement, which our A-level Chemistry page sets out in full — the A to E grade comes from written papers alone, and the endorsement is reported separately on the certificate and assessed by the student's own teachers on direct observation of their practical work.

What is worth drawing out here is the asymmetry inside one Guildford school's own documents. The word "endorsement" does not appear anywhere in the Guildford County Biology handbook we read, while the Chemistry handbook names it in a summary table on an early page. A student taking both sciences at that school is given a clear account of how practical work is assessed in one subject and no equivalent account in the other.

That division matters for how a student works outside lessons. The observed half — competence with apparatus, the contemporaneous record, independent working — happens in the student's own laboratory and nowhere else, so no arrangement made outside the school can produce it. The examined half does not: the 15% in that handbook sits in the written papers and covers why a titration is repeated to concordant titres, how an outlier is identified, what a given source of error does to a calculated enthalpy change, and the calculations the required practicals generate. That is where the 20% maths requirement and the 15% practical requirement overlap, and it is the part of the course most worth structured work away from school.

What the 2024/25 DfE Figures Can and Cannot Separate in Guildford

Guildford is a borough inside Surrey, not a local authority of its own, so the Department for Education publishes its A-level Chemistry results inside the Surrey table, local authority 936. That table returned 61 provider rows for 2024/25 when we queried it, of which 47 carry a published value-added score and 14 are suppressed.

The coverage rule used on this page is a single test: a provider is in scope if the District field on its own Get Information about Schools record reads Guildford. We read that field individually for all 61 URNs rather than filtering the Surrey list by postcode or by name. Nine of the 61 are Guildford Borough on that test. The remaining 52 fall across ten other districts — Waverley 10, Elmbridge 7, Mole Valley 6, Epsom and Ewell 6, Tandridge 5, Reigate and Banstead 5, Runnymede 4, Spelthorne 4, Woking 3 and Surrey Heath 2 — and the eleven counts sum to 61. The derivation matters because a postcode filter gets Guildford wrong in both directions, which our A-level Maths tutors in Guildford page works through in detail for the equivalent Maths table.

Eight of the nine Guildford rows carry a published score. Prior's Field School's row is suppressed, so no figure is available for it.

DfE 2024/25 A-level Chemistry value added for the nine Guildford Borough providers, with 95% confidence intervals and matched entries. Sorted by matched entries, largest first. Value added is a progress measure that already adjusts for prior attainment.

One row in that table says something the data can support. Royal Grammar School Guildford's interval, 0.09 to 0.81, lies entirely above zero, and it is the only Guildford row of which that is true. For the other seven the interval crosses zero, which means the figures are consistent with those departments performing at, above or below the national average for students who started from the same place.

Confidence and progress

My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Great Teaching and Focused Learning

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

It is worth naming the reading this table invites and saying why it does not hold. Rank the eight by score and the four independent schools come out above the four academies. The intervals do not support that ordering. Tormead School's runs from -0.26 to 1.10 and George Abbot School's from -0.25 to 0.45, so the two overlap across almost the whole of George Abbot's range; the lowest independent lower bound is -0.55 against a highest academy upper bound of 0.70. Value added already adjusts for prior attainment — that adjustment is the entire purpose of the measure — so a selective intake is not what these numbers are showing. Nor is the borough itself unusual: across the 47 published Surrey rows, 28 are above zero, 18 below and one exactly zero, so positive scores are the Surrey norm rather than a Guildford distinction.

The width of each interval explains why the two smallest departments could never have appeared in that first group. Across all 47 published Surrey rows, the half-width of the interval multiplied by the square root of the matched entries stays between 2.227 and 2.277, so precision is governed almost entirely by cohort size. At St Teresa's School, with six matched entries, that produces an interval of plus or minus 0.92; at Tormead School, with eleven, plus or minus 0.68. A department that size would need an extraordinarily large score before its interval cleared zero, whatever its teaching. These figures separate large cohorts from small ones far more reliably than they separate one department from another, which is the main reason they should not be used to rank Guildford's sixth forms against each other.

How a Guildford Student Studies A-Level Chemistry Outside the Nine Sixth Forms

Not every Guildford student sits A-level Chemistry at one of the nine schools above. Guildford College does not appear in this dataset at all: the 72 Surrey school locations DfE publishes for 2024/25 do not include it, and the only Surrey entries whose names contain "Guildford" are Guildford County School, Guildford High School and Royal Grammar School Guildford. An absence from this table is a statement about this dataset, not about what a provider teaches.

For a student outside a school sixth form, the route to the qualification runs through a centre. AQA defines a private candidate as "someone who enters for exams through an AQA-approved school or college but is not enrolled as a student there", and notes that such a candidate "may be self-taught, home-schooled or have private tuition, either with a tutor or through a distance learning organisation", and must be based in the UK.

The practical endorsement is the part of that arrangement to settle first rather than last. Because it depends on a teacher's direct observation of practical work across the course, and on the student's own contemporaneous record of it, it cannot be assembled retrospectively in a final term. Anyone planning to sit A-level Chemistry outside a Guildford school sixth form should establish with their centre, at the start, how the required practical activities will be covered and how the endorsement will be assessed. Frequently Asked Questions

What GCSE maths grade do Guildford sixth forms expect for A-level Chemistry?

It depends which document you read, and the two Guildford schools that publish the detail do not say the same thing. George Abbot School's Sixth Form Subject Guide for 2026-27 requires grade 6 in GCSE Maths as part of its Chemistry entry requirement, alongside at least four grade 4s and 6-6 in Combined Science or 6 in Chemistry at triple science. Guildford County School's Chemistry handbook tells students that if their maths is not secure at grade 7/8 or above on the higher tier GCSE paper, they may struggle with parts of the course. One is a minimum for admission; the other is a department's view on coping with the course.

Why does Guildford County School warn about maths in Chemistry but not in Biology?

The national requirement differs between the two subjects and the school's documents follow it. The Department for Education requires at least 10% level 2 mathematical skills in A-level Biology and 20% in Chemistry. Guildford County's Chemistry handbook states that 20% figure and adds the grade 7/8 warning. We searched its Biology handbook from the same 2026 series for "mathematical skills", "Level 2", "grade 7", "Maths (Higher tier" and "10%", and none of those appears in the document we read. That Biology handbook also carries no "Key Assessment Criteria" block.

Which exam boards do Guildford sixth forms use for A-level Chemistry?

They differ, so it is worth checking rather than assuming. George Abbot School's 2026-27 subject guide lists Chemistry under Edexcel. Guildford County School's Chemistry handbook names AQA and links to the AQA Chemistry 7404-7405 page. Tormead School's own Chemistry page states that pupils study the Edexcel IGCSE (9-1) in Chemistry from Year 9, but an A-level awarding body was not found on the pages we read, so a Tormead family should ask the department directly. The board decides which past papers and mark schemes a student should be working from.

Which Guildford schools does this page cover, and how were they chosen?

Nine providers, chosen by a single test: a school is in scope if the District field on its Get Information about Schools record reads Guildford. Guildford is a borough inside Surrey, so DfE publishes its A-level Chemistry results inside the Surrey table for local authority 936, which returned 61 rows for 2024/25. We read the District field individually for all 61 rather than filtering by postcode. Nine are Guildford; the other 52 sit across Waverley, Elmbridge, Mole Valley, Epsom and Ewell, Tandridge, Reigate and Banstead, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Woking and Surrey Heath.

Which Guildford Chemistry department has the best value-added score?

The question cannot be answered as precisely as it sounds. Eight of the nine Guildford departments have a published 2024/25 value-added score, and only one — Royal Grammar School Guildford at 0.45, with an interval of 0.09 to 0.81 across 39 matched entries — has an interval lying entirely above zero. The other seven intervals cross zero, so those figures are consistent with performance at, above or below average. Value added already adjusts for prior attainment, and interval width is governed mainly by cohort size: at six matched entries, St Teresa's School's interval spans plus or minus 0.92.

Why is Prior's Field School shown as suppressed?

Because DfE withholds the figures for that row. Prior's Field School appears in the 2024/25 Surrey A-level Chemistry table and its GIAS District field reads Guildford, so it is one of the nine in scope, but its value added, confidence interval and matched entries are all published as a suppression code rather than as numbers. Suppression in this dataset protects small cohorts. It means no score is available for that department, which is different from a low score, and nothing about the quality of its teaching can be read from it in either direction.

Can a tutor deliver the practical endorsement?

No, and nobody outside the student's own centre can. The endorsement rests on a teacher's direct observation of practical work carried out over the course, together with the student's own contemporaneous record of that work. What can be worked on away from a laboratory is the examined half, which Guildford County School's Chemistry handbook puts at 15% of the exam marks: error analysis, concordant titres, choice of apparatus, and the calculations the required practicals generate. That is also where the practical content and the 20% maths requirement overlap.
