Which Leeds sixth forms teach all three A-level Englishes, and which teach only two?

We checked the eight largest Leeds sixth forms and colleges by A-level cohort size, drawn from the 46 providers Compare School and College Performance publishes 16-to-18 results for in the Leeds local authority area, and cross-referenced each one individually against DfE's 2024/25 “subjects entered” table.

Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College is the only one of the eight largest Leeds providers to enter students for all three qualifications, and by a wide margin: its 177 combined English entries are more than double Elliott Hudson College's 82, the next largest English department on this list. Every other provider we checked teaches English Language and English Literature as two separate courses and does not offer the combined Language and Literature route at all. We chose these eight because Compare School and College Performance's own 2024/25 Leeds local authority table ranks them as the largest A-level providers by cohort size, from Notre Dame's 974 students down to Allerton High School's 119; the full Leeds LA list runs to 46 schools and colleges once every small sixth form is included, most of which enter too few English students for a meaningful year-on-year comparison. Every one of the eight is confirmed “Open” on the Department for Education's own Get Information about Schools register, so none of the figures above describe a closed or since-converted institution under an old name.

Does every Leeds sixth form teach the same A-level English board and specification?

All of the eight largest Leeds providers that name a board on their own site teach AQA for A-level English Language, specification 7702. Literature is where the picture splits. Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College teaches AQA's Specification A (7712): Paper 1, Love through the ages, and Paper 2, Texts in shared contexts, each worth 40% of the A-level, plus a 20% non-exam assessment. Elliott Hudson College teaches a different AQA course, Specification B (7717), built around named genre units — its current Literary Genres unit is Tragedy, studied through Shakespeare's Othello, Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman and a collection of John Keats's poems, and its Texts and Genres unit is Crime Writing, studied through nineteenth-century poems by George Crabbe, Oscar Wilde and Robert Browning, Graham Greene's Brighton Rock and Ian McEwan's Atonement. The Grammar School at Leeds is the only one of the eight largest Leeds providers to split its own English department across two exam boards rather than one. Its own course pages state “the AQA course” for Language — Paper 1, Language, the individual and society, and Paper 2, Language diversity and change, each 40%, plus 20% coursework — and “the OCR course” for Literature, specification H472, whose Component 1 assesses Shakespeare, drama and poetry written before 1900. What GCSE grade does each Leeds sixth form ask for, and does it change by qualification?

Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College sets a different entry bar for each of its three English A-levels, quoted from its own three course pages: a grade 6 in GCSE English Language for A-level English Language; a grade 6 in both GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature for A-level English Literature; and only a grade 5 in each for the combined A-level English Language and Literature — a full grade lower than either single subject at the same sixth form. Elliott Hudson College sets its bar differently again: a grade 5 in GCSE English Language for A-level Language, but a grade 4 in GCSE English Language plus a grade 5 in GCSE English Literature for A-level Literature. The Grammar School at Leeds asks for a grade 6 in the matching GCSE for each of its two A-levels — grade 6 in GCSE English Language for its AQA Language course, grade 6 in GCSE English Literature for its OCR Literature course.

Which Leeds providers actually score above or below average on DfE's value-added data?

DfE publishes a subject-level value-added score for A-level English at institution level — contradicting a claim on this site's own A-level biology pages for London and Birmingham that no such score exists for individual subjects. A value-added score compares a student's actual grade against the average grade achieved nationally by students who started their A-level from the same GCSE results; 0.00 is the England average, and a positive or negative score is only a genuine finding if its published 95% confidence interval sits entirely on one side of zero. Read off the point estimate alone, and two schools with opposite signs and small cohorts can look meaningfully different when the gap is really just sampling noise, so every figure below is shown with its entry count and its confidence interval.

Of the eight largest Leeds providers, only three — Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College, Elliott Hudson College and Abbey Grange Church of England Academy — clear zero in both English subjects, and all three sit above the England average in both. Only one of the eight, Luminate Education Group, clears zero in both subjects and sits below the England average in both. The remaining four providers' scores are not statistically distinguishable from the England average, whatever their point estimate reads: Roundhay School's Language score, for instance, touches zero at its lower bound exactly, and Allerton High School's Language and Literature scores point in opposite directions but neither clears its own confidence interval, so the apparent gap between them cannot be treated as a real finding.
