The subject content the Department for Education prescribes for every awarding body requires at least 20% of an A-level Chemistry paper’s marks to test mathematics at Level 2 or above — double the 10% it requires of biology. That single number explains most of what follows on this page, including why one Leeds college asks for a GCSE maths grade two grades higher for chemistry than for biology while another asks for the same grade in both. No result currently ranking for this search sets out A-level chemistry provision in Leeds itself, so this page starts from the published data. DfE publishes a subject-by-subject entry count for every institution returning 16-18 results, so the question of who teaches A-level chemistry in Leeds has a published answer rather than a prospectus answer. The five largest are below, with their biology and physics entries alongside, because the comparison is the point: chemistry is not automatically the smallest or the largest of the three sciences at a given institution, and which way it falls differs school by school.

Two of those rows are worth pausing on. At The Grammar School at Leeds, chemistry is not merely ahead of biology — it is the school’s single largest A-level subject by entries, ahead of Mathematics on 74 and Biology on 64. And at Notre Dame, the largest chemistry operation in the city, chemistry entries run at more than double physics: 206 against 94. Across the 25 Leeds providers with a published record and at least one chemistry entry, chemistry entries exceed biology entries at nine of them and are exactly level at two more, so the common assumption that biology is always the biggest of the three sciences is wrong about nearly half of Leeds.
The distribution is also far more lopsided than a city-wide figure suggests. Adding up the entries at the 24 of those providers that are still open with published data gives 809 A-level Chemistry entries — our own arithmetic on DfE’s published rows, not a figure DfE publishes — and the five institutions in the table above account for 493 of them. Thirteen of the 25 providers entered fewer than 20 students, and seven entered fewer than 10. For a family, that is the difference between a college running several parallel chemistry sets and a school running one class of eight, and DfE publishes nothing at all about class sizes or sets, so the entry count is the only published signal of scale there is.

First, 18 of the 44 Leeds institutions with 16-to-18 provision have no published 2024/25 subject-entry record at all: DfE returns a notice saying ‘16 to 18 data is not available for this school or college’, which it attributes to a recent change of school type or to no students having completed 16-18 studies that year. That is not evidence that those schools teach no chemistry, and several of them plainly do run sixth forms. Second, the figure of 44 is a floor rather than a census: DfE’s own search reported 311 Leeds establishments in total and we recovered 285 of the listing tiles, so a handful of providers may be missing from it.
There is a third correction we made to our own working. DfE publishes seven A-level Chemistry entries for Benton Park School, but that record sits against URN 108083, which the Get Information About Schools register lists as Closed; the open successor, URN 151762, opened on 1 August 2025 and has no published 16-18 data yet. Benton Park is therefore left out of the table and out of the 809, which is why that total is described above as covering open providers with published data. Every other provider named on this page was checked in the same register on 19 September 2026 and returns ‘Establishment status Open’.
Because the specification makes it. DfE fixes the subject content for A-level Chemistry centrally, and every awarding body must meet it. AQA states the requirement in its own specification for chemistry in one sentence: ‘Overall, at least 20% of the marks in assessments for chemistry will require the use of mathematical skills. These skills will be applied in the context of chemistry A-level and will be at least the standard of higher tier GCSE mathematics.’ DfE’s prescribed content sets the same floor at 10% for biology and 40% for physics. So chemistry sits squarely between the two, with twice biology’s mathematical load, and it is assessed at higher-tier GCSE standard or above.
That is an abstract rule until you see a Leeds admissions policy built on it. Elliott Hudson College publishes its entry requirements subject by subject, and its chemistry and biology pages are identical in structure and nearly identical in content. Both ask for an Average Point Score of 5.5 or above across a student’s GCSEs. Both ask for a grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language. Both ask for a 66 or above in Combined Science, or a 6 or above in the single subject. Both carry the same exception clause, allowing an APS below 5.5 where a student has secured a 7 in Maths, a 7 in the science itself, or 7-7 in Combined Science.
One line differs. For A-level Biology the college asks for ‘GCSE Mathematics grade 4 or above’. For A-level Chemistry it asks for ‘GCSE Mathematics grade 6 or above’. The science grade is the same in both; only the maths grade moves, and it moves by two grades. That is the 20%-against-10% weighting expressed as an admissions decision rather than as a regulation, and it is the single most useful thing a Leeds family weighing chemistry against biology can know before results day.
Not the same ones, and the variation is not where most families expect. Three Leeds providers publish a chemistry-specific requirement on their own course pages:

Read down the science column and the three are effectively the same: a grade 6 in chemistry itself, or a 66 in Combined Science, at every one of them. Read down the maths column and they are not: a grade 5 at Notre Dame against a grade 6 at both Elliott Hudson and Abbey Grange. A family working from one Leeds sixth form’s requirement and assuming it applies across the city would be right about the science grade and wrong about maths at two of the three — and maths is the grade that is easiest to leave until too late, because it does not feel like a chemistry problem.
Notre Dame is also the counter-example that stops this becoming a rule. Its published chemistry requirement asks for ‘a grade 5 or above in GCSE Maths’, and its published biology requirement asks for ‘a grade 5 in GCSE Maths’ — the same grade for both subjects. So the two-grade gap is a decision Elliott Hudson has made about its own cohort, not a national rule and not something every Leeds provider does. The lesson for a family is to read the course page of the specific sixth form their child is applying to, in the year they are applying, rather than any city-wide summary including this one. Of the Leeds providers that name an awarding body on their own course pages, four enter A-level Chemistry with AQA: Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College, Elliott Hudson College, Abbey Grange Church of England Academy and Leeds Mathematics School all say so in as many words. Roundhay School’s chemistry page names no board — it links to a specification document instead — so it is left out of that count rather than assumed into it.
The interesting case is Notre Dame, which is also the largest chemistry provider in the city. Its chemistry page reads ‘Examination Board AQA’ and its biology page reads ‘Examination Board AQA’, but its physics page reads ‘Examination Board OCR’. A Notre Dame student taking chemistry and physics together is therefore sitting two different awarding bodies in the same timetable: two paper structures, two mark schemes, two sets of past papers, and two sets of examiner conventions about how a method mark is earned. At Abbey Grange and at Elliott Hudson, by contrast, all three sciences are entered with AQA, so a student taking two or three of them works inside one house style throughout.
This matters most in the weeks when a student starts working through past papers, because a paper from the wrong board looks superficially right and is not. It is the single easiest thing for a family to check and the single most common thing to get wrong: the subject content is fixed nationally, so every board teaches the same chemistry, but the number of papers, their length, their mark allocation and the way synoptic material is examined all differ. Five A-level Chemistry specifications are currently available to schools in England, and one of them is in the middle of a change that a Year 12 student starting now needs to know about. AQA offers Chemistry 7405, the specification every Leeds provider we could confirm enters. OCR offers two: Chemistry A (H432 at A-level, H032 at AS), a content-led course, and Chemistry B (Salters) (H433 at A-level, H033 at AS), which teaches the same prescribed content through industrial and research contexts. Pearson Edexcel offers its own A-level Chemistry, and WJEC’s Eduqas offers A410QS at A-level and B410QS at AS, carrying qualification numbers 601/5645/4 and 601/5501/2 respectively.
OCR is withdrawing part of the Salters route, and the detail matters because the obvious inference is wrong. Its own qualification page states: ‘We will withdraw the AS Level Chemistry B (Salters) (H033) qualification after the next academic year. The final first teach date will be September 2026. The final assessment opportunity will be June 2027.’ That is the AS qualification only. OCR’s full withdrawal notice lists two tables, and the June 2028 table — the one covering full A-levels — contains Biology B (Advancing Biology) H422 and Physics B (Advancing Physics) H557, but no chemistry entry at all. The A-level Chemistry B (Salters) H433 therefore continues, while its AS partner does not.
The practical upshot is that chemistry is the one science of the three where the context-led alternative route survives at full A-level. A Leeds student who moves schools mid-course, or who is comparing two sixth forms, cannot assume that ‘OCR’ on one prospectus and ‘OCR’ on another means the same course: Chemistry A and Chemistry B (Salters) are different specifications with different papers, and only one of them is losing its AS. Anyone currently in a Year 12 AS Salters cohort has a single assessment opportunity, in June 2027, with no resit afterwards.
For students on the AQA specification, which is the one Leeds uses in every case we could verify, the assessment is three written papers: Paper 1 covers physical and inorganic chemistry over 105 marks in two hours, Paper 2 covers physical and organic chemistry over 105 marks in two hours, and Paper 3 covers synoptic and practical skills over 90 marks in two hours. Its entire published A-level entry is six rows: Chemistry 16, Computer Studies 21, Mathematics 61, Further Mathematics 54, Physics 54, and a single AS Physics entry. Its own course index lists six courses — Mathematics and Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mandarin Chinese and the Leeds Mathematics Certificate — and biology is not among them.
This is a fact about one school’s curriculum design, not evidence about chemistry’s standing in Leeds, and it should not be read as one: a specialist mathematics school offering chemistry as its only non-mathematical science tells you what that school has chosen to build, not what Leeds families want. What it does illustrate is that chemistry travels with mathematics and physics in a way biology does not, which is the same 20% weighting showing up in a curriculum decision rather than an admissions one. For a student at a school like this, chemistry is often the subject that feels least like the rest of their timetable, and the one where a weekly hour of separate attention changes the most. At least 15%, and it is examined in the written papers rather than in the laboratory. AQA’s specification states that ‘At least 15% of the overall assessment of A-level Chemistry will assess knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to practical work’, and separately that ‘A-level grades will be based only on marks from written exams’, with ‘a separate endorsement of practical skills’ taken alongside. A student completes twelve required practicals across Years 12 and 13, and those practicals then generate written-paper questions worth at least a seventh of the whole qualification.
It is worth being precise about what is and is not chemistry-specific here. The 15% written-paper practical weighting is the same across chemistry, biology and physics, and the separately reported practical endorsement works identically in all three. Neither is what distinguishes chemistry. The mathematics is: 20% against biology’s 10%. That is why this page spends its space on the maths and points elsewhere for the endorsement, which our Leeds A-level biology tutors page sets out in full for all three sciences. The practical point that is worth a chemistry student’s attention is narrower and more useful: the marks for practical work are earned at a desk, by writing up a method, identifying a source of error or evaluating a result, not by performing the experiment well.
None of the gaps above are settled by which sixth form a student happens to attend. A student at a school entering eight chemists a year is not disadvantaged by the number, and a student at Notre Dame, in the largest chemistry cohort in the city, still needs the specific grade their next step requires. For families with medicine in view, the local benchmark is concrete. The University of Leeds School of Medicine sets its MBChB entry requirement at ‘AAA including Chemistry and Biology’, and states plainly that ‘an A* cannot compensate for a B in another subject, so we will not accept A*A*B instead of AAA’. Chemistry is not one of three acceptable sciences there; it is named. It is also worth saying what no page can tell you, including this one. Every figure above describes an institution, and none of them describes a student. DfE publishes no average grade for A-level Chemistry at any individual institution — the entry counts are the only chemistry-specific measure it publishes at school level — so there is no ranking of Leeds sixth forms by chemistry results to be had, and any page offering one has made it up. What the entry counts do tell a family is the scale of the operation their child is joining, and what each institution’s own course page tells them is the grade they need to get in.

AQA, in every Leeds case we could confirm from a provider’s own course page: Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College, Elliott Hudson College, Abbey Grange Church of England Academy and Leeds Mathematics School all name AQA for chemistry. Roundhay School’s chemistry page names no board, so we have not counted it either way. One local detail is worth checking with your own school: Notre Dame enters chemistry and biology with AQA but physics with OCR, so a student taking chemistry and physics there sits two different awarding bodies, while at Abbey Grange and Elliott Hudson all three sciences are AQA.
The AS is; the full A-level is not. OCR states that it will withdraw the AS Level Chemistry B (Salters) qualification, H033, with a final first teach date of September 2026 and a final assessment opportunity in June 2027, and no resit afterwards. The full A-level, H433, does not appear in OCR’s June 2028 withdrawal table, which does list Biology B (Advancing Biology) H422 and Physics B (Advancing Physics) H557. Chemistry is therefore the one science of the three where the context-led B route continues at full A-level. AQA 7405, OCR Chemistry A, Edexcel and Eduqas A410QS all continue unaffected.
No. AQA’s specification states that ‘A-level grades will be based only on marks from written exams’, with a separate endorsement of practical skills taken alongside and assessed by a student’s own teachers. What does affect the grade is that at least 15% of the overall written assessment tests knowledge and understanding of practical work, drawn from the twelve required practicals completed across Years 12 and 13. Those marks are earned in the exam hall, by writing up methods, identifying sources of error and evaluating results, rather than by performing an experiment well in the laboratory.
Almost all of those with published data do, but the data does not cover everyone. Of the 26 Leeds institutions with a published 2024/25 subject-entry record, 25 entered at least one student for A-level Chemistry; the single exception is Leeds College of Building, a construction-specialist further education college. A further 18 of the 44 institutions DfE lists as having 16-to-18 provision have no published record at all, because DfE returns a notice saying 16 to 18 data is not available, so their chemistry provision cannot be read from this data either way. Always check the individual sixth form’s own course list.
