A-Level Geography Tutors in Leicester 2026

Four Leicester sixth forms return a 2024/25 Geography value-added result — not the same four as History — and none differs significantly from the national average.

A-level Geography in Leicester is taught at four sixth forms and colleges with a published 2024/25 value-added return to the Department for Education: WQE and Regent College Group, Beauchamp City Sixth Form, St Paul’s Catholic School and The City of Leicester College, out of eleven Leicester providers checked. None of the four differs significantly from the national average, and the set is not the same four sixth forms that teach A-level History in the city.

Are Leicester’s A-Level Geography and A-Level History Departments the Same Sixth Forms?

Eleven Leicester institutions carry a location record in DfE’s institution-level value-added dataset for the 2024/25 academic year — the same eleven this site’s A-level History page for Leicester checked. Only four return a row for A-level Geography, and it is not the same four that teach History: English Martyrs’ Catholic School, which has a published History result, returns no Geography row at all, while The City of Leicester College, absent from the History table entirely, is one of only four Geography providers the city’s own data publishes. A family comparing the two humanities subjects at the same sixth form’s website is, for three of these eleven institutions, comparing a department that publishes a result against one that does not.

Provider2024/25 VA-matched entriesValue added95% confidence interval
WQE and Regent College Group82+0.03-0.17 to +0.24
Beauchamp City Sixth Form21+0.02-0.38 to +0.43
The City of Leicester College16+0.03-0.43 to +0.5
St Paul’s Catholic School10-0.15-0.74 to +0.44

None of the four figures above differs significantly from the national average. A value-added score is only a finding when its 95% confidence interval sits entirely above or entirely below zero, and every one of these four intervals spans zero — from WQE and Regent College Group’s -0.17 to +0.24 to St Paul’s Catholic School’s -0.74 to +0.44, the widest of the four because it carries the smallest matched cohort. The apparent spread between +0.03, +0.02, +0.03 and -0.15 is inside the noise a small, unmatched cohort produces, not a difference in teaching quality. The table above is ordered by cohort size, largest first, for that reason — not by value added, which these confidence intervals show cannot be used to rank these four departments against each other.

The other seven checked institutions — Darul Uloom Leicester, English Martyrs’ Catholic School, Gateway Sixth Form College, Leicester College, Leicester High School for Girls, New College Leicester and The Imam Muhammad Adam Institute School — return no matched Geography cohort at all. That is not the same as teaching no Geography: DfE only publishes a row where a provider has a group it can match to prior GCSE attainment, so a small or newly formed department can teach the subject and still have nothing published. New College Leicester itself closed on 30 April 2025, re-verified directly against GIAS on 24 September 2026, so its absence from this table reflects a closed institution rather than an unreported one. Its GIAS record names The Herewoode Academy, which opened at the same Glenfield Road address the following day, as its sole successor; the successor carries no A-level results of its own yet, Geography included, because it has not run a full cohort through to results under the new URN.

Only Two of Four Departments Name an Exam Board — and Just One Names Where Its Fieldwork Happens

How each board’s papers are weighted and marked, and the minimum four days of fieldwork every A-level Geography specification requires, are covered on our national A-level Geography guide and are not repeated here. What that guide cannot know is which Leicester department is on which board, or where any of them actually send students — and on that question, the four departments publish very differently.

Beauchamp City Sixth Form is the only Leicester Geography provider to publish exactly where its fieldwork happens. Its own course page names Pearson Edexcel as its board and sets out four assessment units: Physical Geography and Human Geography, each worth 30% of the A-level, a Synoptic Geography paper worth 20%, and a 3,000-4,000-word Independent Investigation worth the remaining 20%. Every Year 12 student takes a compulsory four-day residential fieldwork trip to Swanage in Dorset to gather data for that investigation; a further four-day residential to Iceland in Year 13 is offered but optional. No other Leicester Geography department names a fieldwork destination anywhere on its own site, and no competitor page or national Leading Tuition page carries either location.

The City of Leicester College is the only other department to name its board directly: its own published Geography course document states OCR, and lists the same five ‘Geographical debates’ options — climate change, disease dilemmas, exploring oceans, future of food and hazardous earth — as OCR’s current H481 specification. That document itself, however, has not been updated recently: it describes a modular AS (‘Landscape and place’, 60%) and A2 (‘Physical systems’, ‘Human interactions’ and ‘Geographical debates’ totalling 80%, plus a 20% investigation) structure that the 2015-2017 linear A-level reform retired, its fieldtrip photo captions read ‘Castleton 2012’ and ‘London Docklands 2011’, and the file itself carries an HTTP last-modified date of 24 August 2022 — over four years before this page checked it on 24 September 2026. This describes what the document says, not the course itself: the board, OCR, is stated plainly and separately from the outdated assessment breakdown around it.

Neither WQE and Regent College Group nor St Paul’s Catholic School names an exam board anywhere on its own site — a gap in itself, since a family choosing between Leicester’s largest reported Geography department (WQE, 82 matched students in 2024/25) and its smallest (St Paul’s, 10) cannot find that basic fact published by either. Both do publish their assessment structure. WQE’s own course page sets out two 2-hour-30-minute examinations worth 80% of the A-level, covering globalisation, urban growth, hazards, the water cycle, the carbon cycle and coasts, plus a 3,000-4,000-word coursework investigation worth 20%, with a minimum of four days of fieldwork. St Paul’s follows the same two-paper, four-unit shape: Year 12 covers water and carbon cycles plus coastal zones (physical) and changing places plus globalisation (human); Year 13 covers natural hazards (physical) and population and resources (human), with a Unit Three independent investigation incorporating fieldwork. Which board sits behind either structure is not information a parent can check before enrolling.

What Each Department Asks of a Student Who Didn’t Take GCSE Geography

The four departments do not agree on what a student needs before Year 12, and none closes Geography outright to a student who never sat the GCSE. How Geography compares with History at GCSE entry across Leicester schools is covered on our Leicester GCSE Geography page and is not repeated here.

ProviderGCSE Geography askOther headline requirement
WQE and Regent College GroupGrade 5+ ‘or similar’ if takenGrade 5 English Language; grade 4 Maths minimum
Beauchamp City Sixth FormAt least grade 5, only if taken6 grade 5s overall, including English Language or Literature
The City of Leicester CollegeGrade 6, if taken5 GCSE passes (9-4) including Maths and English
St Paul’s Catholic SchoolNo subject-specific figure publishedDirects every applicant to its general Post-16 entry grades page

WQE’s grade 5 threshold and The City of Leicester College’s grade 6 threshold both apply only if a student actually sat GCSE Geography — neither closes the course to a student who did not. Beauchamp City Sixth Form treats Geography no differently from any other optional subject: it sits under the college’s general entry requirements, with the same only-if-taken condition. St Paul’s Catholic School publishes no Geography-specific figure at all, the same pattern its A-level History course follows, directing every applicant instead to a single general entry-grades page.

How Leading Tuition Works With A-Level Geography Students in Leicester

A tutoring programme that does not know which of these four departments — or which other Leicester provider — a student attends wastes time on the wrong board’s paper structure and the wrong fieldwork brief. For a Beauchamp City Sixth Form student, that means building Physical and Human Geography exam technique around Pearson Edexcel’s three-paper, four-unit structure and turning Swanage fieldwork data into an Independent Investigation that clears the 3,000-4,000-word mark without drifting into appendix territory. For a WQE or St Paul’s Catholic School student, it means working from the two-paper, 80/20 structure both departments publish, while confirming the actual exam board directly with the student’s own teacher rather than assuming one — neither school states it, and a wrong assumption changes what an investigation needs to hit. For a City of Leicester College student, it means practising the two-from-five Geographical Debates format specifically, not a generic hazards overview.

Our expert A-level Geography tutors help students across Leicester with exam-board-specific coursework guidance too — checking a WQE or St Paul’s Catholic School investigation against the criteria the student’s own teacher confirms, or preparing a Beauchamp student’s Swanage or Iceland data for the Independent Investigation write-up — alongside targeted work on whichever GCSE Geography gaps a student’s own department has flagged at entry. Whether a child’s own sixth form is one of the four named on this page or another Leicester provider entirely, the starting point is the same conversation: which board and fieldwork brief they are actually working from, and where their write-up is currently losing marks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Leicester sixth forms have a published 2024/25 A-level Geography value-added result?

Four, out of eleven Leicester institutions checked in DfE’s 2024/25 value-added dataset: WQE and Regent College Group (82 matched students), Beauchamp City Sixth Form (21), The City of Leicester College (16) and St Paul’s Catholic School (10). The other seven institutions checked — including New College Leicester, which GIAS confirms closed on 30 April 2025 — return no matched Geography cohort for the year.

Are the same Leicester sixth forms teaching A-level Geography and A-level History?

No. Of the four Geography providers, three also appear on this site’s A-level History page for Leicester — WQE and Regent College Group, Beauchamp City Sixth Form and St Paul’s Catholic School — but the fourth does not match. English Martyrs’ Catholic School has a published 2024/25 History result but no Geography row, while The City of Leicester College has a Geography row and no History row.

Does a Leicester department’s 2024/25 Geography value-added score show which teaches better?

No. A value-added figure is only a statistically meaningful finding when its 95% confidence interval sits entirely above or entirely below zero. All four Leicester intervals span zero — from WQE and Regent College Group’s -0.17 to 0.24 to St Paul’s Catholic School’s -0.74 to 0.44 — so none of the four scores, +0.03, +0.02, +0.03 and -0.15, is distinguishable from the national average or from each other.

Which exam board does Beauchamp City Sixth Form use for A-level Geography, and where does its fieldwork happen?

Beauchamp City Sixth Form teaches Pearson Edexcel’s A-level Geography. Every Year 12 student takes a compulsory four-day residential fieldwork trip to Swanage in Dorset, and Year 13 students are offered an optional four-day residential to Iceland — the only named fieldwork destinations any Leicester Geography department publishes.

Which exam board does The City of Leicester College use for A-level Geography?

OCR. The college’s own published course document names the board directly and lists the same five ‘Geographical debates’ options — climate change, disease dilemmas, exploring oceans, future of food and hazardous earth — as OCR’s current H481 specification, although the rest of that document still describes an assessment structure retired in the 2015-2017 linear A-level reform.

Do WQE and Regent College Group and St Paul’s Catholic School publish their A-level Geography exam board?

No. Neither department names an exam board anywhere on its own website, despite WQE and Regent College Group being Leicester’s largest reported A-level Geography department, with 82 matched students in 2024/25. Both publish their paper structure — two 2-hour-30-minute examinations worth 80% of the A-level plus a 20% coursework investigation — without stating which board sets it.

Does a Leicester student need GCSE Geography to start the A-level?

It depends on the department, and none of the four makes it an absolute requirement. WQE and Regent College Group and The City of Leicester College ask for a grade 5 or grade 6 respectively only if a student took the GCSE; Beauchamp City Sixth Form folds Geography into its general entry requirements with the same only-if-taken condition; and St Paul’s Catholic School publishes no Geography-specific figure at all, directing every applicant to its general Post-16 entry grades page.
