A-level History in Leicester is taught at four sixth forms and colleges with a published 2024/25 value-added return to the Department for Education: WQE and Regent College Group, Beauchamp City Sixth Form, St Paul’s Catholic School and English Martyrs’ Catholic School, out of eleven Leicester providers checked. Three teach AQA’s specification 7042 and one teaches Edexcel’s 9HI0, and no two combine board, breadth study and depth study the same way.

Already know which board and depth study your child’s Leicester sixth form has actually entered them for?

Our expert A-level History tutors help students across Leicester build source analysis and essay technique around the breadth study, depth study and coursework topic their own department has set — whether that is WQE and Regent’s Route CN or CQ, Beauchamp City’s Germany depth study, St Paul’s Cold War paper, or English Martyrs’ Edexcel route.

Four Leicester Providers Teach A-Level History — No Two the Same Way

Eleven Leicester institutions carry a location record in DfE’s institution-level value-added dataset for the 2024/25 academic year. Only four return a row for A-level History: WQE and Regent College Group, Beauchamp City Sixth Form, St Paul’s Catholic School and English Martyrs’ Catholic School. The other seven — Darul Uloom Leicester, Gateway Sixth Form College, Leicester College, Leicester High School for Girls, New College Leicester, The City of Leicester College and The Imam Muhammad Adam Institute School — return no matched cohort for the subject at all. That is not the same as teaching no History: DfE only publishes a row where a provider has a group it can match to prior GCSE attainment, so a provider with none may enter too few students to appear, or have too small a match, rather than not teaching the subject at all. Four providers is the whole of what the city’s own data publishes for this subject, not a sample chosen for this page.

WQE and Regent College Group is Leicester’s largest reported A-level History department by a wide margin: 88 VA-matched students in 2024/25, more than three times Beauchamp City Sixth Form’s next-largest cohort. It teaches AQA’s specification 7042 and offers two named routes on its own course page: Route CN pairs the breadth study with 2N Russia: Revolution and Dictatorship, 1917–1953, and Route CQ pairs it with 2Q The American Dream: reality and illusion, 1945–1980. Both routes share the same breadth study, 1C The Tudors: England, 1485–1603, and the same coursework choice of six topics — the Fall of the Roman Republic, the Crusading Movement, the Conquistadores, European Witchcraft, the Abolition of Slavery and Germany — assessed as a 20%-weighted extended essay. Two exam papers, one for each route’s chosen units, are each worth 40% of the final grade, sat in the summer of the second year.

Beauchamp City Sixth Form, a free school that opened on 1 September 2020 and is run by Lionheart Educational Trust according to DfE’s Get Information about Schools service, teaches the same breadth study as WQE and Regent — 1C The Tudors: England, 1485–1603 — but pairs it with a different depth study on its own course page: 2O Democracy and Nazism: Germany, 1918–1945. Its coursework offers three named question areas: what drives American foreign policy, 1897–1989; Black Civil Rights in the USA, 1875–1968; and women’s progress in the UK, 1897–1979. Its 27 VA-matched students in 2024/25 make it the city’s second-largest reported department.

St Paul’s Catholic School, part of the St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Multi Academy Trust, names AQA directly as its assessment board on its own course page. It teaches Tudor England, 1485–1603, as its breadth study and The Cold War, 1945–1991, as its depth study, with a 3,000–3,500-word Historical Investigation worth 20% of the A-level. Its 2024/25 value-added row is suppressed for size, so no figure is published for its cohort.

English Martyrs’ Catholic School, St Paul’s sister school under the same trust, is the outlier: its board is Edexcel’s specification 9HI0, not AQA. Its Paper 1 breadth study is Russia, 1917–91: from Lenin to Yeltsin, its Paper 2 depth study is The German Democratic Republic, 1949–90, and its Paper 3 — Themes in breadth with aspects in depth — is Option 31: Rebellion and disorder under the Tudors, 1485–1603, confirmed directly on Pearson’s own June 2023 exam paper. Its Paper 4 coursework question is the US Civil War: Why the North won, worth 20%. The Tudors appear here too, in other words, just relocated from the breadth paper to a depth-in-breadth thematic paper three-quarters of the way through the specification. English Martyrs’ own examination results page notes that, unlike most sixth-form providers, it enters students for both the AS and A-level qualifications, which the school says means DfE’s sixth-form comparisons are not fully like for like.

Two of these four rows clear zero — a 95% confidence interval sitting entirely on one side of it — and both are negative: WQE and Regent College Group’s -0.34 and Beauchamp City Sixth Form’s -0.57. Both also sit at the city’s two largest reported departments, 88 and 27 matched students respectively, and that pairing is not evidence that bigger departments teach worse. A larger matched cohort narrows the confidence interval around whatever a department’s true score is, positive, negative or zero; a smaller cohort widens it regardless of the underlying score. English Martyrs’ Catholic School’s +0.24 rests on just 11 matched students, and its interval, -0.30 to +0.77, spans more than a full point either side of zero — wide enough that it is statistically indistinguishable from no effect at all, and its positive sign is not evidence of stronger teaching any more than WQE and Regent’s or Beauchamp City’s negative sign is evidence of weaker teaching. St Paul’s Catholic School’s row is suppressed for size and carries no figure to assess. Value added is measured against students with similar prior GCSE attainment, not against a fixed national target, so a negative score describes how a matched cohort performed relative to that expectation — not a verdict on how a department teaches. Every figure above carries its own confidence interval and entry count for that reason: reading a value-added score without both is reading half of what DfE published.

Source: DfE statistics API, dataset 019c2960-abc0-700e-91ed-bb9823c0feed, subject History, GCE A level, A-level cohort, 2024/2025 academic year, queried 24 September 2026. Every entry count above is DfE’s VA-matched figure — the students a department’s results could be matched to prior attainment — rather than a separate subjects-entered total; no other Leicester page publishes a rival History figure for these four providers, so this page uses the one dataset throughout instead of mixing two different counts for the same department.

Only One of Leicester’s Four Departments Makes GCSE History Compulsory

The four departments diverge on more than board and period: what each asks of a student before Year 12 differs just as sharply. WQE and Regent College Group requires GCSE English Language grade 5 or above at Higher tier; GCSE History itself is not required, though a student who did take it must have reached grade 5. Beauchamp City Sixth Form takes the same approach to History — grade 5 or above only if it was taken — but only recommends, rather than requires, English Language at grade 5. English Martyrs’ Catholic School is the outlier again: its published entry requirement is five grade 4s including at least a grade 4 in GCSE History itself, the only one of the four verified departments that makes the subject compulsory before admission. St Paul’s Catholic School directs applicants to its general Post-16 entry grades page rather than publishing a History-specific figure. A student who reaches WQE and Regent College Group or Beauchamp City Sixth Form having never sat GCSE History has a stated route in; the same student applying to English Martyrs’ Catholic School would need to have taken and passed it first.

How Leading Tuition Works With A-Level History Students in Leicester

A tutoring programme that ignores which route a student is actually on wastes time relearning content they already have, and skips the historiography or source skills their own paper actually tests. For a WQE and Regent College Group student on Route CN, that means building Russian revolutionary history and interpretation practice around 2N specifically, not a generic 20th-century Europe overview. For a Beauchamp City Sixth Form student, it means preparing for a very different depth study — the collapse of Weimar democracy and the Nazi seizure of power — under the same breadth paper. For an English Martyrs’ Catholic School student on Edexcel, it means recognising that their Paper 3 Tudors unit is examined as a thematic, source-based paper rather than the standard period study most Leicester AQA students sit, and that their Paper 1 breadth study runs to 1991, a longer span than any AQA route on this page.

Our expert A-level History tutors help students across Leicester with exam-board-specific coursework guidance too — narrowing a WQE and Regent College Group student’s choice among six investigation topics, or preparing an English Martyrs’ Catholic School student’s US Civil War essay against Edexcel’s own non-exam-assessment criteria — alongside targeted work on whichever GCSE gaps a student’s own sixth form has flagged at entry. Whether a child’s own department is one of the four named on this page or another Leicester provider entirely, the starting point is the same conversation: which board and named periods they are actually studying, what their GCSE profile already shows, and where their essays are currently losing marks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which exam board do Leicester’s A-level History sixth forms use?

Three of the four Leicester providers with a published 2024/25 result teach AQA’s specification 7042: WQE and Regent College Group, Beauchamp City Sixth Form and St Paul’s Catholic School. English Martyrs’ Catholic School teaches Edexcel’s specification 9HI0 instead, confirmed directly on the school’s own curriculum page. These four are the only Leicester providers, out of eleven checked, with a value-added row for the subject in DfE’s 2024/25 dataset.

Do Leicester’s three AQA providers teach the same A-level History?

No. All three open with the same breadth study, 1C The Tudors: England, 1485-1603, but none share a depth study. WQE and Regent College Group pairs it with 2N Russia: Revolution and Dictatorship, 1917-1953, or 2Q The American Dream: reality and illusion, 1945-1980. Beauchamp City Sixth Form pairs it with 2O Democracy and Nazism: Germany, 1918-1945. St Paul’s Catholic School pairs it with 2R The Cold War, c1945-1991. Despite the identical breadth paper, no two of the three finish on the same depth study.

Does Leicester’s fourth reporting provider, English Martyrs’ Catholic School, also study the Tudors?

Yes, but in a different position. Edexcel’s structure puts the Tudors in Paper 3, Option 31: Rebellion and disorder under the Tudors, 1485-1603, confirmed on Pearson’s own June 2023 exam paper, rather than as the breadth paper. Paper 1 is a wider Russia breadth study, 1917-91: from Lenin to Yeltsin, and Paper 4 is a coursework essay on the US Civil War: Why the North won.

Is Leicester’s A-level History value added positive or negative?

Only two of the city’s four reporting providers have a value-added score whose confidence interval clears zero, and both are negative: WQE and Regent College Group’s -0.34 (interval -0.53 to -0.15, 88 matched students) and Beauchamp City Sixth Form’s -0.57 (interval -0.91 to -0.23, 27 matched students). English Martyrs’ Catholic School’s +0.24 (11 matched students) does not clear zero, and St Paul’s Catholic School’s row is suppressed for size.

Does a negative value-added score mean a Leicester sixth form teaches A-level History badly?

No. DfE’s value-added measure already adjusts for each student’s prior GCSE attainment, so a negative score describes how a matched cohort performed against that expectation, not a verdict on teaching quality. Both of Leicester’s statistically significant scores also sit at its two largest departments, 88 and 27 matched students, which is the pattern a large, narrowly measured cohort produces rather than proof that bigger departments perform worse.

Does every Leicester sixth form require GCSE History before starting A-level History?

No, only one of the four verified providers does. English Martyrs’ Catholic School’s published entry requirement is five grade 4s including at least a grade 4 in GCSE History itself. WQE and Regent College Group and Beauchamp City Sixth Form both ask for grade 5 in GCSE History only if a student took it, without making the subject compulsory.

How many Leicester post-16 providers were checked for A-level History data, and how many actually have a published figure?

Eleven Leicester institutions carry a location record in DfE’s 2024/25 value-added dataset. Four return a row for A-level History: WQE and Regent College Group, Beauchamp City Sixth Form, St Paul’s Catholic School and English Martyrs’ Catholic School. The remaining seven, including Gateway Sixth Form College and New College Leicester, return no matched History cohort at all, which reflects DfE’s matching threshold rather than confirming the subject is not taught there.

What does the A-level History coursework involve at Leicester’s sixth forms?

It varies by provider. WQE and Regent College Group offers a choice of coursework topics including the Fall of the Roman Republic, the Crusading Movement, the Conquistadores, European Witchcraft, the Abolition of Slavery and Germany, assessed as a 20%-weighted extended essay. St Paul’s Catholic School sets a 3,000-3,500 word Historical Investigation, also worth 20%. English Martyrs’ Catholic School’s coursework question is the US Civil War: Why the North won.
