A Level Maths Tutors in Leicester

A level maths in Leicester is concentrated in colleges rather than school sixth forms: of the 2,183 students at state-funded Leicester schools and colleges who entered an A level in 2025, 1,860 were at three of the four institutions that take students only from age 16. Across the nine Leicester institutions that entered candidates for A level maths, there were 681 exam entries in 2024/25 and 67 in Further Maths.

Leicester's A Level Maths Sits in Colleges, Not School Sixth Forms

Seven state-funded Leicester institutions entered students for A levels in 2025, and their counts add up to exactly the figure the Department for Education publishes for the city: 126 + 115 + 474 + 79 + 111 + 1,275 + 3 = 2,183. That arithmetic is worth doing, because it means the seven state-funded institutions in the table below are the whole picture for Leicester rather than a sample of it. The two independent schools in the same table sit outside that total.

Four of those seven take students only from age 16, though the four could not be more different in scale. Three large colleges hold 1,860 students between them — 85 per cent of everyone in the city who entered an A level. WQE and Regent College Group, a general sixth form college whose own DfE profile records an age range of 16 to 99, holds 1,275 of them on its own, which is 58 per cent of Leicester. Beauchamp City Sixth Form, a 16-to-19 free school, holds 474. Gateway Sixth Form College, a 16-to-19 academy, holds 111. The fourth, Leicester College, is a general further education college whose own DfE profile also records an age range of 16 to 99 — it takes students only from age 16 as well, but entered just 3 A level students in 2025.

The rest are spread thin. Three secondary schools run sixth forms that entered A level students: The City of Leicester College with 126, English Martyrs' Catholic School with 115 and St Paul's Catholic School with 79, so 320 between them. New College Leicester is recorded as NE: it entered no students for A levels at all, and its only 16-to-18 subject row is a Level 2 hairdressing qualification with 1 entry.

Those two independents are excluded because DfE's local-authority total covers state-funded institutions only. Leicester High School for Girls entered 18 students. Darul Uloom Leicester entered 3, and Mathematics is the single subject row DfE publishes for it — all three of its A level students sat maths and nothing else.

Beauchamp City Recorded More A Level Maths Entries Than a College 2.7 Times Its Size

Leicester's two biggest providers sit at opposite ends of the same measure. WQE and Regent College Group had 1,275 students with an A level entry and 252 A level maths exam entries. Beauchamp City Sixth Form had 474 students and 292 maths entries. The smaller institution put more candidates into A level maths than the larger one.

Two different units are in play there and it is worth being exact. DfE's headline column counts students — anyone who entered at least one A level or AS level. The subjects table counts exam entries, so a student sitting both Maths and Further Maths appears in two rows. Dividing one by the other gives an intensity measure, not a participation rate: how many maths entries an institution generates for every 100 students it puts through A levels.

For a family choosing between them, the ratio is more useful than the raw count. At WQE and Regent, maths is one option inside a very wide curriculum and 20 entries per 100 students reflects that. At Beauchamp City the figure is 62, and a student who arrives without strong algebra is in a room where most people around them are doing the same subject. Neither is better in the abstract; they are different rooms to be the weakest mathematician in, and that is the practical reason a Leicester student may want support outside the classroom.

Further Maths in Leicester Is 67 Entries, and Three Providers Record None

Further Mathematics is the entry condition or the strong preference for some competitive maths, engineering, physics and economics degrees, though not all of them, and in Leicester it is a much narrower offer than single maths. Six of the nine Leicester institutions that entered candidates for A level maths also recorded Further Maths entries in 2024/25, and 67 entries between them against 681 in single maths — roughly one in ten.

A missing row is not automatically a zero, so here is why those three are real absences, not suppressed figures. The same column prints single entries where they exist: English Martyrs' one Further Maths entry, Leicester College one A level maths entry. DfE's own note says it usually suppresses results where there are five or fewer pupils, and may also suppress data case-by-case — it does not itself distinguish grades from entry counts, but Leicester College's own row does: its 3 students are printed as an entry count while its outcome measures read SUPP. Gateway's own course list corroborates it: Core Maths AS, Maths A Level, Maths Foundation GCSE and Maths GCSE Fast Track — no Further Maths. Darul Uloom Leicester's entire subject table is a single Mathematics row, so there is no Further Maths there either.

Where it is offered, the bar is high and set at GCSE: grade 8 at Beauchamp City Sixth Form (alongside three other A levels, one of which must be Maths) and at WQE and Regent College Group (which also treats Further Maths as two subjects), and grade 7 at The City of Leicester College. A Leicester student who wants Further Maths needs the work done before the GCSE, not after.

What Leicester Sixth Forms Actually Ask For in GCSE Maths

Seven Leicester providers publish a GCSE maths threshold, and they do not converge on one grade: five ask for grade 6, Leicester High School for Girls the highest at 7, and St Paul's Catholic School the lowest at 5. Two of the grade-6 providers also name algebra specifically — an unusual detail that flags where Year 12 students struggle.

A GCSE maths grade decides more than just access to A level maths in Leicester. Beauchamp City Sixth Form publishes an entry table covering 18 A level subjects, and 10 of them name a GCSE Mathematics grade as a condition of entry: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Physics at grade 6; Business, Economics, Geology and Psychology at grade 5; Mathematics itself at 6; and Further Mathematics at 8. A Leicester student on a grade 5 in GCSE maths has lost access to far more than the maths course.

St Paul's Catholic School and Leicester High School for Girls sit at opposite ends of that spread: St Paul's asks for the lowest published grade, a 5 from the higher tier, and Leicester High School for Girls the highest, a 7. Both entered Further Maths candidates in 2024/25 — 5 and 4 respectively; St Paul's also publishes a threshold for that course, a grade 7 minimum, while Leicester High School for Girls does not.

Core Maths and AS Maths: Two Routes Leicester Uses Very Differently

Two Level 3 maths qualifications sit alongside the A level in Leicester, and each is concentrated in a way that no national picture would show you.

Core Maths — Level 3 Mathematical Studies in DfE's tables — ran to 127 entries across four institutions in 2024/25: Beauchamp City Sixth Form 68, The City of Leicester College 35, WQE and Regent College Group 19 and Leicester College 5. WQE and Regent also entered one candidate for Mathematics (Numeracy) at Level 3.

The City of Leicester College's 35 is the striking one, because it is nearly as large as its 43 A level maths entries, and the college publishes the reason in its own entry requirements: Core Maths is required if students are studying Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Geography and are not also taking A level Maths. That is a rule, not a preference, and it means a Leicester science student at that college is sitting a Level 3 maths qualification whether or not they think of themselves as a mathematician.

AS maths is the other case. There were 45 AS level maths entries in Leicester in 2024/25 and 39 of them were at English Martyrs' Catholic School, against 5 at WQE and Regent and 1 at Beauchamp City. English Martyrs' publishes why: its Year 12 maths students sit external AS papers — one of two hours and one of an hour and a quarter — and the school states that they need a D at AS to continue onto A2. Its named board is Edexcel.

That changes what a Year 12 at English Martyrs' is preparing for. At the colleges the first public maths exam comes at the end of the two-year course; there it comes a year earlier and carries a progression decision. A student drifting in the spring term of Year 12 does not have another year to recover in.

What the DfE Tables Do Not Say About Maths Teaching in These Colleges

It is tempting to read an institution's published grade as a verdict on its maths department, but every institution-level outcome DfE publishes for 16-to-18 is an all-subject measure: the progress score, the average result and the retention figure each cover every A level a student sat. The only maths-specific view, the subjects-entered tab, has four columns — subject, number of exam entries, qualification and level — and no result column at all.

So Beauchamp City Sixth Form's average result of grade B, 38.72 points, and WQE and Regent College Group's grade C, 29.33, are statements about whole cohorts. Leicester's state-funded average is 32.27, a grade C+, against 35 points across state-funded England and 36.1 for all schools and colleges in the country. On the measure of students achieving AAB or higher including at least two facilitating subjects, Leicester recorded 12.9%, against 17.5% across state-funded England and 20.0% across all English schools and colleges.

Progress scores need one more caution. DfE bands a score above average only when the score is above zero and the entire confidence interval is above zero, and average when the interval includes zero. St Paul's Catholic School scored 0.13 with an interval of -0.01 to 0.26 and is banded average; Beauchamp City scored 0.1 with an interval of 0.05 to 0.16 and is banded above average. The lower score gets the better band, because it is measured more precisely. The City of Leicester College is on 0.18 and English Martyrs' on 0.15, both above average; WQE and Regent is on -0.34 and Gateway on -0.26, both below; England sits at -0.03.

Retention counts students completing their main study programme, not their maths course: 98.3% at Beauchamp City, 93.3% at The City of Leicester College, 92.3% at English Martyrs', 90.8% at St Paul's, 89.0% at WQE and Regent and 85.7% at Gateway, against 91.5% for Leicester and 93.1% across state-funded England. None of it says how well maths is taught, so ask a college about set sizes, teacher stability and past-paper practice instead.

How Leading Tuition Works With A Level Maths Students in Leicester

Every programme starts with the student's own institution, because in Leicester that determines more than the syllabus. The published assessment structures already differ: The City of Leicester College lists Paper 3 as Statistics and Mechanics, at two hours and 100 marks for 33.3% of the qualification, while Beauchamp City Sixth Form publishes three two-hour papers with Paper 2 as Pure Mathematics and Mechanics and Paper 3 as Pure Mathematics and Statistics. Knowing which of those a student is sitting decides which past papers a tutor opens in the first session.

The split between pure and applied then does most of the work. Pure carries the bulk of the marks and is where a student who was comfortable at GCSE most often stalls — algebraic fractions, proof, and the move from differentiation as a rule to differentiation as a tool. The applied half fails differently, usually through modelling assumptions rather than technique, so a diagnostic session separates the two before anything is planned.

For students taking Further Mathematics, sessions run alongside the single-maths programme rather than replacing it, since core pure content is examined in both. Students heading for maths-heavy degrees often pair the subject with A-level physics, and the mechanics overlap is covered explicitly; those on the statistics-heavy route can work with a statistics tutor on the same footing. Across all subjects and levels, 91% of our students achieve their desired grades.

Where A level maths leads locally is worth knowing before Year 12 choices are made. The University of Leicester's BSc Mathematics, UCAS code G100, lists a typical offer of ABB including Maths and is accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. That is a lower bar than the AAB measure DfE publishes, which 12.9% of Leicester students reached in 2025 — but it still sits above the city's C+ average result, and that is the gap a two-year programme has to close.
