Seven Leicester sixth forms and colleges carry a published 2024/25 A-level Psychology value-added result in the Department for Education’s dataset, out of eleven institutions the city returns. Two of those seven fall significantly below the national average on DfE’s own measure: Gateway Sixth Form College, with 27 matched entries, and WQE and Regent College Group, the city’s largest Psychology provider, with 397. The remaining five providers do not differ from the national average.

Do Leicester’s A-Level Psychology Departments’ 2024/25 Results Differ From the National Average?

Leicester’s A-level Psychology providers are ranked below by cohort size, largest first, because DfE’s confidence intervals show that ranking by score is not something these figures support.

Provider2024/25 VA-matched entriesValue added95% confidence interval
WQE and Regent College Group397-0.49-0.59 to -0.39
Beauchamp City Sixth Form127-0.06-0.24 to +0.11
The City of Leicester College56-0.12-0.38 to +0.15
English Martyrs’ Catholic School29+0.28-0.09 to +0.66
Gateway Sixth Form College27-0.52-0.90 to -0.13
St Paul’s Catholic School19+0.30-0.16 to +0.76
Leicester High School for Girls7-0.52-1.27 to +0.24

A value-added score is only a statistically meaningful finding when its 95% confidence interval sits entirely above or entirely below zero. Two of these seven do: WQE and Regent College Group’s -0.49 and Gateway Sixth Form College’s -0.52. Neither figure is a verdict on teaching — DfE’s value-added measure tracks student progress against prior attainment, not attainment itself — but the two results are not equally precise. WQE’s interval, -0.59 to -0.39, is 0.20 wide, on 397 matched entries: the largest Psychology cohort any Leicester provider returns, and 60% of the 662 matched entries across all seven rows combined — 3.1 times Beauchamp City Sixth Form’s 127, the next largest. Gateway’s interval, -0.90 to -0.13, is 0.77 wide — 3.9 times WQE’s — on a cohort of 27. Both clear zero by DfE’s test, but WQE’s result rests on a much larger, more precisely measured cohort, while Gateway’s wide interval says much less about where its true figure sits. The other five providers’ intervals all span zero and are not distinguishable from the national average or from each other.

Eleven Leicester institutions carry a location record in DfE’s institution-level value-added dataset for 2024/25 — the same eleven this site’s A-level Geography page for Leicester checked. The other four — Darul Uloom Leicester, Leicester College, New College Leicester and The Imam Muhammad Adam Institute School — return no matched Psychology cohort for the year. That is not the same as teaching no Psychology: DfE only publishes a row where a provider has a group it can match to prior GCSE attainment, so a small or newly formed department can teach the subject and still have nothing published. Darul Uloom Leicester’s own A-levels page does not name which subjects it currently runs, stating only that “the subjects available may vary depending on student demand and the number of students ready to take each course” — a genuine unknown, not a denial that Psychology is among them. New College Leicester itself closed on 30 April 2025, confirmed directly against GIAS on 24 September 2026; GIAS records The Herewoode Academy, URN 151607, as its linked successor, effective 31 March 2025, and that successor has not yet run a full cohort through to published A-level results under its new URN.

Which Exam Board and Paper 3 Options Has Each Leicester Department Chosen?

How AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas structure their A-level Psychology papers differently, including AQA’s three-group system for its Paper 3 options, is covered on our national A-level Psychology guide and is not repeated here. What that guide cannot show is which Leicester department is on which board, or which options each has chosen — and on that question, Leicester’s seven providers publish very differently.

Five of Leicester’s seven Psychology providers name AQA as their exam board on their own site: Beauchamp City Sixth Form, English Martyrs’ Catholic School, St Paul’s Catholic School, The City of Leicester College and Leicester High School for Girls. Neither Gateway Sixth Form College nor WQE and Regent College Group names a board anywhere on its own site for A-level Psychology.

Beauchamp City Sixth Form’s own course page names memory, attachment, social influence, abnormality, brain function, cognitive development, aggression and schizophrenia among the topics it teaches, with Cognition and Development, Schizophrenia and Aggression as its published Paper 3 choices. English Martyrs’ Catholic School’s course page lists its options as Human relationships, Schizophrenia and Forensic Psychology, alongside a published entry requirement of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths and a Science. St Paul’s Catholic School names AQA as its board but does not publish which options it teaches, directing applicants instead to a general Post-16 entry-grades page.

Gateway Sixth Form College’s own course page lists Relationships, Schizophrenia and Forensic Psychology among its published options. The City of Leicester College’s own course document names AQA and lists schizophrenia, forensics and relationships as its options; that document’s HTTP headers show it was last modified on 24 August 2022, over four years before this page checked it on 24 September 2026 — a fact about the document’s currency, not about the course as currently taught. Leicester High School for Girls’ course page names AQA and lists Schizophrenia, Forensic and Relationships. WQE and Regent College Group’s course page does not use the word ‘options’, but its second-year content includes relationships, sleep, aggression and stress.

Four of the six departments that publish which Psychology topics their students study in the second year — English Martyrs’, Gateway, The City of Leicester College and Leicester High School for Girls — name the identical trio: Relationships, Schizophrenia and Forensic Psychology. Beauchamp names Cognition and Development, Schizophrenia and Aggression instead. WQE’s own list — relationships, sleep, aggression and stress — does not match the trio either.

What Does Each Leicester Sixth Form Ask of a Student Starting A-Level Psychology?

None of Leicester’s seven Psychology providers requires GCSE Psychology itself as a condition of entry — unsurprising, since GCSE Psychology is not a subject any Leicester school checked for this page is known to offer. Departments instead set Maths and Science GCSE conditions, and those conditions vary by two whole grades across the city. How much mathematics A-level Psychology actually contains is covered on our national A-level Psychology guide and is not repeated here; what that guide cannot show is which Leicester department sets which grade.

ProviderPublished Psychology entry requirement
WQE and Regent College GroupGrade 5+ English Language; grade 4+ Maths; 2 GCSE Sciences grade 4+
Beauchamp City Sixth FormGrade 5+ Maths and at least two Sciences (subject-specific line)
The City of Leicester CollegeGeneral Level 3: 5 GCSE passes (9-4) incl. grade 4 Maths and/or English Language
English Martyrs’ Catholic School5 GCSEs grade 4+ incl. Maths grade 4 and 1 Science grade 4
Gateway Sixth Form CollegeGrade C/5+ Maths, plus a science GCSE
St Paul’s Catholic SchoolNo subject-specific figure; general Post-16 entry-grades page
Leicester High School for Girls6 GCSEs grade 6+ incl. Maths grade 6 and English Language grade 6

Beauchamp City Sixth Form’s entry-requirements table sets a Psychology-specific line of grade 5 or above in Mathematics and at least two Sciences, on top of the college’s general bar of six grade 5s including English Language or Literature and Maths. English Martyrs’ Catholic School asks for five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including grade 4 in Maths and grade 4 in at least one Science. WQE and Regent College Group asks for grade 5 or above in English Language, grade 4 or above in Maths, and a minimum of two GCSE Sciences at grade 4 or above, on top of the college’s standard six-GCSE entry bar. Leicester High School for Girls, an independent school, sets the highest Maths bar of the seven: six GCSEs at grade 6 or above, including Maths at grade 6 and English Language at grade 6.

St Paul’s Catholic School publishes no Psychology-specific figure at all, directing every applicant to its general Post-16 entry-grades page. The City of Leicester College’s published requirement is a general Level 3 condition, not specific to Psychology: five GCSE passes at grade 9-4, including grade 4 in Maths and/or English Language — the ‘and/or’ meaning English Language alone can satisfy it without a Maths grade 4. Gateway Sixth Form College asks for grade C/5 or above in Maths, plus a science GCSE, on top of the college’s standard entry criteria.

How Leading Tuition Works With A-Level Psychology Students in Leicester

A tutoring programme that does not know which of these seven departments — or which other Leicester provider — a student attends risks practising the wrong Paper 3 options against the wrong assessment weighting. For a Beauchamp City Sixth Form student, that means building exam technique around Cognition and Development, Schizophrenia and Aggression, not the Relationships and Forensic Psychology combination four other Leicester departments teach. For a WQE or Gateway student, it means confirming the exam board directly with the student’s own teacher before building a revision plan, since neither department states one on its own site. For an English Martyrs’, City of Leicester College or Leicester High School for Girls student, it means working the Relationships, Schizophrenia and Forensic Psychology trio into exam technique from day one; for a St Paul’s student, it means confirming which options apply with the student’s own teacher first, since the school does not publish them.

Our expert A-level Psychology tutors help students across Leicester build essay and evaluation technique around their own department’s board and options, whichever of these seven providers — or another Leicester sixth form entirely — a student attends. For the International Baccalaureate route rather than A-level, see our IB Psychology page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Leicester sixth forms have a published 2024/25 A-level Psychology value-added result?

Seven, out of eleven Leicester institutions DfE’s 2024/25 value-added dataset checks. WQE and Regent College Group returns the largest matched cohort, 397 students, and Leicester High School for Girls the smallest, 7. The other four institutions checked — Darul Uloom Leicester, Leicester College, New College Leicester and The Imam Muhammad Adam Institute School — return no matched Psychology cohort for the year, which is not the same as teaching no Psychology: DfE only publishes a row where it can match a group to prior GCSE attainment.

Does a Leicester department’s 2024/25 Psychology value-added score show which teaches better?

No. A value-added figure is only a statistically meaningful finding when its 95% confidence interval sits entirely above or entirely below zero. Two of Leicester’s seven rows meet that bar — WQE and Regent College Group (-0.49, on 397 matched entries) and Gateway Sixth Form College (-0.52, on 27) — and even then the measure is progress against prior attainment, not a verdict on teaching quality. The other five intervals span zero and are not distinguishable from the national average.

Which exam board does WQE and Regent College Group use for A-level Psychology?

WQE and Regent College Group does not name an exam board anywhere on its own site for Psychology. Its course page lists relationships, sleep, aggression and stress among its second-year topics, and states entry requirements of grade 5 or above in English Language, grade 4 or above in Maths and two GCSE Sciences at grade 4 or above, without stating which board sets the exams.

Which Leicester Psychology departments choose the same AQA Paper 3 options?

Four of the six Leicester departments that publish their options — English Martyrs’ Catholic School, Gateway Sixth Form College, The City of Leicester College and Leicester High School for Girls — name the identical trio: Relationships, Schizophrenia and Forensic Psychology. Beauchamp City Sixth Form, the only department to diverge among those naming AQA, chooses Cognition and Development, Schizophrenia and Aggression instead. St Paul’s Catholic School names AQA as its board but does not publish which options it teaches.

Does a Leicester student need GCSE Psychology to start the A-level?

No Leicester Psychology provider requires it, since GCSE Psychology is not a subject any Leicester school checked for this page is known to offer. Instead, departments set Maths and Science GCSE conditions: English Martyrs’ Catholic School and WQE and Regent College Group both ask for grade 4 or above in Maths, Beauchamp City Sixth Form asks for grade 5 or above in Maths and two Sciences, and Leicester High School for Girls asks for grade 6 or above in Maths — the highest of the seven.

Is New College Leicester still teaching A-level Psychology?

No. New College Leicester closed on 30 April 2025, confirmed directly against GIAS on 24 September 2026. GIAS records The Herewoode Academy, URN 151607, as its linked successor with effect from 31 March 2025; the successor has not yet run a full cohort through to published A-level results.

How large is WQE and Regent College Group’s A-level Psychology department compared with other Leicester providers?

WQE and Regent College Group returns 397 matched Psychology entries in DfE’s 2024/25 dataset, which is 60% of the 662 matched entries across all seven Leicester providers combined, and 3.1 times Beauchamp City Sixth Form’s 127, the next-largest department the data shows.
