That is not a straight line in either direction - German rose sharply through the two Covid-affected results years before settling lower - but the recent movement, 2022/23 to 2024/25, is a rise of 23.7% (59 to 73), not the decline a shrinking, minority subject might suggest.

Set against England, the direction is reversed. England's own state-funded German entries fell from 39,012 in 2018/19 to 29,898 in 2024/25 - a 23.4% decline across the same seven years - while Liverpool's 2024/25 German entries sit above five of the previous six years' own figures. Liverpool's French entries fell more gently over the same period, from 580 to 528, a net 9.0% decline, and its Spanish entries rose substantially, from 1,251 to 1,726, up 38.0%. German remains by far Liverpool's smallest language of the three - a handful of pupils next to hundreds for French and well over a thousand for Spanish - but on its own recent trend it is not a subject that has gone from the city's state schools.
A Leading Tuition query of the Department's school-level 2024/25 dataset, covering every Liverpool school with a Key Stage 4 cohort, finds eight schools with at least one GCSE German entry that year. Two of them carry nearly the whole subject between them. St Hilda's Church of England High School (URN 104721), a voluntary aided secondary confirmed open on Get Information about Schools with a Key Stage 4 cohort of 171, entered 44 pupils for GCSE German - just over a quarter of its own cohort. King David High School (URN 104703), a voluntary aided Jewish secondary confirmed open with a cohort of 114, entered 22. Together that is 66 of Liverpool's 73 German entries: 90.4%, calculated directly from the two schools' own published entry figures against the city's DfE-published total (66 divided by 73).

Both schools also enter GCSE French alongside German - St Hilda's 27 pupils, King David 10 - but neither recorded a single GCSE Spanish entry in the same dataset, a genuinely unusual pairing next to the rest of the city, where Spanish is the dominant modern language by a wide margin. All six are confirmed open on Get Information about Schools.
St Vincent's School is a non-maintained special school for pupils with sensory impairment, a different category from a mainstream secondary. Excluding it, the seven state-funded schools' German entries sum to exactly 73 - Liverpool's own published local-authority total for the subject - a check worth running, because a local-authority figure is not always the simple sum of every school row that feeds into it.

None of these six schools is a single-language outlier in the way St Hilda's and King David are. Dixons Broadgreen Academy and St Edward's College both also enter substantial numbers of French and Spanish pupils, and Calderstones School and Childwall Sports & Science Academy run large Spanish cohorts alongside their single German entry each. For a family at any of these six schools, GCSE German in 2024/25 was a genuinely small class, not a whole-year-group subject.

AQA's German 8662 is the current specification, first taught from September 2024; AQA's own outgoing specification page for 8668 states, in its own banner, that 8668 “is the legacy specification” and directs students to “8662 for the current specification (first teach Sept 2024)”. Pearson Edexcel's GCSE German (2024) is confirmed on Pearson's own specification PDF as “Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1) in German (1GN1)”, first teaching from September 2024 and first certification from 2026.
OCR and WJEC Eduqas do not currently offer a live GCSE German specification. OCR's own German qualification URL resolves to an empty “Qualification details” page with no specification content behind it - byte-for-byte identical to the equivalent empty page OCR publishes under its GCSE French URL. Eduqas's live qualifications catalogue lists “AS/A Level German” and a separate, non-GCSE “Language Pathways German” qualification, but no GCSE German entry appears among its current subjects. A parent checking their own child's specification should confirm the board named on the school's own website rather than assume German mirrors French or Spanish exactly, since the boards offering each language can differ.
